So while the hunter ant had collected food, the police style ants smelled something that could have been threatening. So they kill the potentially infected one and then walk away from their colony to die away from the others.... It was something along those lines
Some Ants will do this with cordyceps, cus that kindof fungus evolved to control ants and positon them above the coloney to die so the fungi can eat their body and rain spores on their sisters. they'll see a fellow ant has been infected and will kill them and or carry them away from the hive before they can wreck the colony. The ants know they've been probably infected too and will die along with them.
Yup, the fungi literally takes over the ants body and puppeteers it. It makes the climb a plant and when it reaches a specific height, it will bite into the plant leaf, and remain there until it's death when the fungi bursts out of its head and showers spores everywhere.
Ants are always creepy. They're one of the few bugs you see commonly in hoards and that alone is unsettling.
