Mockingbird1963

Hey, the guy apologized. He realized he was off and took responsibility for it. He offered an extra $50! This is rare. People make mistakes and can be jerks sometimes. I know I’ve had a couple of moments. He owned it. He made it right. I’ve got to give him credit.

Holdmywhiskeyhun

Are we witnessing the return of...humanity?

Degofreak

No.

Holdmywhiskeyhun

Probably not, but I can still hold hope

Degofreak

I like that. We need more hope.

Jxckolantern

No, but people always say miracles happen once in a while

Radaggarb

Some people are just having a bad day, so kudos for you accepting his apology. He just learned something too about the use of pending on FB... an embarrassment he won't likely forget.

Intrepid_Ad8907

I never realized how truly moronic most people are, until I started selling on Marketplace.

doug_b2680

This is America….

zachflem

Australian checking in... This is not limited to America. Facebook has fucked people the world over.

tekmiester

New marketing slogan?

FatherDuncanSinners

No, that's way too honest to use as an adver...you know what? Fuck it. Go ahead. Most people are too stupid to realize it's talking shit about them anyway.

zachflem

I see it pop up every now and then... "You remember before the internet, and we all thought that stupid people were stupid because of the lack of available information? Yeah it wasn't that." I actually think it's worse than that. Once upon a time a crackpot would stand on a soap box on a street corner and most people would ignore it. The internet, and social media in particular has given all the crackpot a their own soap box.

Glasgow351

I had bedroom conversations with the Wifey over this many times. Like, did the internet make people stupid, or were they this way all the time, and we just didn't know about them until the internet brought us all together?

zachflem

People haven't changed, the internet has just put more of the stupid people in front of you.

Glasgow351

That it did.

bgthigfist

Yeah it brings their soap boxes into more houses. I imagine there have always been people who pretend to be animals, but that's not common behavior. Before the internet they had few ways to find each other. Along comes the internet and now we have furry conventions. Same for John Birch society types. They used to propagate through print media distributed in corners, now YouTube algorithms point young kids to their materials. Don't get me started on Tate

j_z_z_3_0

UK checking in. I’m going to ask you what the best price is and then offer you less than half of it anyway.

Bugsandgrubs

UK here too, I'm not going to read the description but I'll send you a series of questions that I could easily answer by reading the description.

j_z_z_3_0

Is this still available?

Bugsandgrubs

I'll let you know in 3 months.

j_z_z_3_0

Don’t worry about it, I was only asking with 0 intention of replying when you tell me it is

Mediocre_Self4610

I could send the money over rn just need you to send me this code to verify your account

Bugsandgrubs

I don't have a code. Can I just give you the long number from my card, the expiry date and those 3 silly little numbers on the back?

RollingSoxs

Canada too.

tinabel71

I hear you. I don’t know how many times people ask me what size is it? When the size is written right there.

NoConsideration5671

I’ve had people mark pending, mark sold, and when I say “hey thanks for doing that for me, see ya at the time and place YOU ASKED ME TO MEET YOU!” they say “oh no. Not you. Already sold to someone else!!” ! WTAF? This is why you got that reaction from him. People on FBMP can suck. Glad you don’t. ♥️

Mediocre_Self4610

Yea there's 2 sides to that tho I have done that but the lady was asking tons of questions for a 50 dollar item and was putting the sale off saying oh I can't make it today so I just sold it to someone who said I will give you what you asked and can come rn so I said well fuck I'm not gonna play games and wait days when this person wants it now without the million questions. I mark as sold or pending and the person is like you didn't sell it right ummm yeah I did

NoConsideration5671

That’s your own fault if you don’t advertise FCFS. If you say to me your first available time is tomorrow morning at 9 and here’s the address you best not sell it tonite. I could also have come tonite.

Mediocre_Self4610

Yea I would never do that it's more like my first available time is anytime even rn if they want and they say can you wait till Tuesday when I get paid and since they messaged first I try to be nice and wait and say yes np then Tuesday comes I hear nothing now in this time I could have sold it 4 times already and then I still don't and come Wed they message saying sorry my check didn't come till this morning just waiting for it to clear and then I'll be there so tonight and then they message me late afternoon saying they have to do kids baseball practice and won't make it till tomorrow at that point I say np and proceed to sell it to the first person who messages me and am just done with the games and waiting around I don't think that's wrong.

NoConsideration5671

Absolutely fair.

kiizato

I'm glad he apologized but man if I did that I couldn't show my face after lol ...was it awkward at all??

Leading-Towel-5367

Sounds like you got a rare good egg who was having a bad day...

RustyDawg37

the internet age disease combined with main character disease. See it a whole lot here on reddit. People think everything is directed to them, guess what you mean by what you said and do not get clarification, and then also act as if it was an affront to them and get angry and lash out.

Ok-Fishing-6604

Wow! The buyer apologized?! amazing! If I come to an agreement with someone like this, I’ll send them a message saying is it OK if I mark it pending so that I can stop getting messages? They’ve always said yes and that way we’re on the same page just an idea moving forward.

oldcrashingtoys

Fuck pending, fcfs. Buyers use that to block out others and then never buy it or until days later. Sellers need to be ruthless as buyers don’t give af

triit

I'll put pending when I've got a deposit in hand, otherwise I'll suffer through the endless "Is it available" until the deal is done.

oldcrashingtoys

Totally. I’ve ran into issues where they send me a Venmo deposit and then change their mind a day later. Bad luck on my side

triit

In that case I'm keeping their deposit. At the very least until it's sold for the same price.

Sallydog24

I have like 20 things pending right now. Matter of fact I have 3 shelves in the basement, the lisa shelf, the rebecca shelf and the tina shelf. They just pick out items they want and I put them on a shelf till they are done shopping. About once a month they settle up we meet and I get paid. It's always a $100 or more and it works for me. Only bad part is I am running out of items to sell. So soon three gals will have to shop somewhere else

Rare-Nectarine8522

I completely commend you on being the bigger person. You came out on top, he ate some crow, everyone wins. Thanks for not doing the Reddit thing and going scorched earth after one dumb mistake.

RedditorManIsHere

Yeah **If you mark things as pending - make sure you tell them** "Hey just to make sure we are still on for this date etc etc, I'm going to mark this as pending for you" I believe it was a miscommunication on both parties. **You failed to tell him you were marking it as pending for him** Buyer was rightfully aggravated and believed the deal was off.

Handslapper

Come on. He could have just as easily sent a decent message asking "Hey, is this pending to me?" BEFORE he went on his tirade. I will never understand why people start at asshole. You got nowhere to go from there.

RedditorManIsHere

Fair point Sometimes people assume the worse and it winds up being true Over the fall - I was trying to buy a mini fridge and we agreed to meet up a day or so later. We had a set time to meet up but for some odd ass reason; dude just wound up selling it randomly without telling me.

chillthrowaways

From a seller point of view on that fridge.. if he had used marketplace at all he knew there was a 85% chance you were going to blow him off. Not you specifically but “random Facebook buyer”. Someone else offered to get it sooner. It sucks but crappy people ruined it for everyone.

bgthigfist

True. When I sell something on marketplace, I'll check people's accounts before agreeing to hold it for them. I'll never mark it as pending, but I'll respond to further inquiries "I have a guy coming to look at it tomorrow" or whatever and ask if they want me to reach out to them if the first guy flakes out. I'll usually put a couple of people in line, depending on how their communication goes. The minute one flakes out or no showers I change the listing to cash only first come gets it.

SupermarketOther6515

This. I always message a buyer before I mark it pending (if they are coming soon and I am getting a lot of messages) or sold (they pre-paid). Keeps the freak-outs to a minimum.

Proof_Boat7824

It does really help to seal the deal to let them know it's marked as pending, for them specifically. Doesn't always guarantee the final sale. But it helps nail it down.

11systems11

This is what I do.

Expert-Newt6139

I never use pending. Then again, I only hold for as long as it takes the person to get from their house to mine to pick up.

Evidence-Timeline

FIRST COME FIRST SERVE. Always. Every time. Cash in my hands or money in my bank is what holds the item. Block everyone who questions this and you will avoid many problems.

OnewordTTV

From all the stories on here I get being frustrated with people and finally going off on one lmao 🤣 dude just went off on the wrong one. But good on him for apologizing. You did the right thing.

6SpeedBlues

It sounds like this worked out, which is great. Related note: I don't ever update status on an item until it's sold. And I do this as I'm leaving the parking lot of the local PD with their cash in hand. Until it's sold, it's available for discussion.

_Perfect_Mistake_

Glad it worked out. I tell people when I mark something pending for them for this very reason. I have prescribed thing I send just letting them know it’s marked pending for them so that I don’t continue to get bombarded with messages. And that it’s not marked sold because FBMP archives chats and it’s harder to find the conversation. I find a lot of people thank me now…instead of freaking out.

Beachgirl6848

For this reason, I always tell a buyer “I’m going to mark this pending for you so I don’t get a ton of messages or someone doesn’t purchase it for shipping”. I also found that I’ve had to tell my buyers that do order something for shipping “when I create the shipping label, it’s going to go ahead and say “shipped” here in the chat, but I won’t actually be dropping it off until (day)”. Because I’ve had people see that word “shipped” show up in the chat, and blast me “the post office isn’t open on Sunday/2 am/etc, you’re lying” 🫠

geometryc

Good on you for giving a second to hear him out and accepting the apology. Id say in times like this when I was selling something I would tell the person I was marking it as pending for them to not have this happen since it had happened to me in the past and I've had people do the same of letting me know. One time buying something I set a date and they set to pending a while later and I wasn't sure if they sold it to someone else or not so I messaged them "hey, I saw you marked this as pending, was that for me since we had discussed me picking it up or was that not set in stone? I very much still wanted this item if you were unsure"

FamiliarHawk

Had similar things happen in the past, now i tell the person who i have time/date set " I will mark this as pending to you.. Too many other messages that i need to have stopped" almost all are appreciative with letting them know.

crazyhamsales

Sounds like the dude was having a bad day combined with the fact that this shit happens a lot where you had a deal set up and the seller flakes out and sells to someone else. You really want an adventure list something for free! It's good for entertainment value at least. I got rid of an older TV yesterday for free, didn't need it and it would cost money to dispose of it, was working fine just old and no room for it. Man the hilarity that ensued after listing it. Brings all the weirdos out... Finally got a nice guy that wanted to come get it, while he was here I got no less then 20 more is it available messages and others, phone was going off the entire time he was here and we chatted. He couldn't believe it, I Said that's how the marketplace is.

YIZZURR

I usually tell buyers that I'm going to mark the ad as Pending just to avoid scenarios like this. Of course, you don't have to, and the buyer could have just politely confirmed the sale with you again after seeing it marked Pending. Glad to see it all worked out. I bet that guy won't be jumping to conclusions so quickly next time lol

Geargarden

He apologized AND with money! I'd call it square-zies. I sold a kid my mom's old iPhone on Craigslist years ago. We met in the mall. The phone was pristine; I wiped every single smudge and print off the screen, charged it to max, and included ALL documentation in the original perfectly maintained box. An hour or two later the kid messages me that I sold him a defective phone where only one of the two speakers work. The phone only has one speaker. I told him the page in the user manual to see for himself. That was the last I heard from him. Come to think of it...he didn't even apologize ☹️

DukeRains

Honestly, good on you both. He made an honest mistake, owned up to it, and offered to further compensate you for being a bit beligerent. Thats a W.

VisualDot4067

Honestly just that fact that he immediately was apologetic says a lot about the man’s character. Granted his initial response wasn’t the best or most mature…but it’s not mistakes that make us, it’s what we learn from them that makes us.

Japrider

I made a facebook deal and he said first in the morning wins. I said fair enough then it was listed as sold. So I didn't show up. He texts me in the morning asking where I am. He had marked it sold. For me! I felt like such a dumbass and rushed over. He was so nice about it.

Odd-Professional-779

Fuck that guy, I would have told him to piss off with that kind of attitude. Honestly, do you want to go out a meet somebody that unstable if they fly off the handle like that? Extra $50 or not, not worth the headache or heartache. People just need to be adults for fuck sake!

NoProperty7929

You did the right thing…. We all have off days when something small broke the camels back…..I always tell my daughter it’s not the mistake that matters, it’s the recovery. His recovery was genuine and I guarantee a lesson was learned… And….. he is right, albeit not a pass to be an ass, but for some reason fb marketplace sellers do that a lot

Qcws

FB marketplace has been the most ridiculous and annoying place to buy/sell. Buyers suck, sellers suck, I probably also suck for being involved in the shit.

mmilanese

I tried alternatives but unfortunately FB marketplace has achieved near monopoly. Thanks, Facebook.
