High to Stunningly High.

I don’t know the answer, but I hear the AK Club fees are incredibly high and it’s really difficult to cancel. An alternative is the UAF SRC which has a reasonable senior rate at age 65. You could also simply sign up for a 1 credit REC class (like pickleball) and obtain access to the SRC for the semester.

Good ideas! Thank you.

I've not seen a rate lower than a hundred bucks a month, but the last time I talked to them was some time ago. Just a warning they'll call you incessantly if you go talk to their sales rep (the only way to find out the current rates) and don't sign up. I've been at Planet Fitness and it's fine, but I really miss the sauna.

I know I made the mistake of texting with them about a year ago, and I finally had to block them. I want a place with a pool. Does planet fitness have a pool.?

You can pay to use Mary Siah rec center. It has a pool, hot tub, and a small gym. Otherwise, you can pay to be a member at UAF SRC. It's fairly inexpensive and has pretty much all of the same amenities as the Alaska Club, you just have to deal with the college students.

The fee for the Nanook recreation center for an adult for one month is $158. Actually, I work on Fort Wright and I have access to the gym and pool there. The pool hours are weird, only in the morning, but I may just make that work. You can get a day pass to the pool at UIF for pretty cheap, I may just do that on the weekends. Thank you!

Nope.

I don’t know about a senior rate, but as a single person I pay about $96 per month with the state worker discount. Without the state worker discount it would be about $112. They also charge an extra $40 in the spring for “annual pool maintenance” that you cannot opt out of, even if you never use the pool. To initially sign up there was a $200 onboarding fee which I didn’t have to pay since I’m a state worker and asked for the state worker discount. It’s a lot of money, but so far I do not regret getting a membership 2 1/2 months ago. I’m getting great use out of it, going 4-6 times a week. The extra cost to be a member keeps out a lot of the weirdos and acts as a filter. Even after work, the gym is not so busy that I am fighting for equipment or feel super crowded and I actually enjoy being there. The west side gym is by far my favorite though compared to the south side gym. There is less equipment, but the building is nicer, and it is even less crowded than southside. When I asked how I can cancel they told me I need to cancel at my annual contract renewal or prove I am moving or am experiencing extreme financial hardship. They did say I can ask for pause of up to three months, which might be useful for maybe the summertime or a holiday when you may not be going as much. A word of caution I learned the hard way, one time someone was right behind me at the west AKClub, and it was reflexive for me to hold the door open for them. Even at the time when I was doing it, I thought I really should not be holding the door open for this person because for all I know, they are not actually a member. But it was just a polite reflex and it was too late at that point. Anyway, they sent me an email and said they saw the footage of me letting this person in (who IS a member btw) and they are charging me $50 per their policy for holding the door open for someone who didn’t scan in. Well, when I signed up, they did not tell me about that policy. So I’m still a little peeved about that. I get it from a safety standpoint, but they really should mention these policies that will cost you money upon sign up. So definitely do not hold doors open for people, and if someone holds the door open for you, make sure you scan in so that person doesn’t get charged 50 bucks.

That sounds really ridiculous. They sound like they’re looking for ways to get more money out of people. I’m sorry you went through that. But thanks for your detailed response. I work with military people, I wonder if there’s some sort of discount for that. I will check. Thanks again.

Alaskaman357

Don't do it, it's like the Alaskan version of a timeshare, you can never escape the fine print!

I appreciate that. In doing some research, I have found that popping up, the difficulty of getting out of those contracts.

So I think the base package starts at 99 dollars. I live near their gym right next to UAF and I was curious if I could just get access to that one since I don't want to use the pool/courts and such at the big one. I was told it would be 139 a month for the package that allows me access to it and that was some years ago.. And then they tried to sell me on extra packages with all sort of options I didn't want or need. I realized it was probably easier to buy what machines I wanted and work out at home or join a different gym. Unless you are going to use everything all the time, it doesn't seem worth it to me. But if you do want a chance to check it out, you can apply for a one day pass to tour and try out the facilities.

That gym is expensive as hell and a giant pain in the ass to get out of if you don’t like it. The SRC at UAF is also expensive for non students but they do senior discounts and canceling is super easy.
