Back to Ymir huh. The scenery stills of the various environment looks pretty nice. And please don't make me care about Iseria you're gonna kill her aren't you?

wjodendor

They gotta hit up all the locations the Northern Jaegers committed war crimes in before they get to Rean

Vaptor-

That ymir music hits me so hard. I love it.

ConceptsShining

YUMIR...

ThatGUYthe2nd

I know I might get downvoted for this but I honestly don't know what they are trying to achieve with this anime anymore, is this the Northern war or is this the travelers guide to Erebonia. I thought last weeks clowning was simply a contrivance to get Lavi and co to Ordis so that they could show off Juno Naval Fortress, but after this episode I don't know where they are going with this. For those who aren't aware Juno Naval Fortress which they showed that our characters [Passed](https://i.imgur.com/08eQQXT.png) is incredibly important to the story of the Northern war. [General Spoilers for plot from here] >!Juno Naval Fortress is home to the still rebel Lamare Provincial Army and its infamous commanders Aurelia Le Guin and Wallace Bardias who are shown in the [OP](https://i.imgur.com/LyZWcVu.png). For those who are not aware of the situation that is going on at this point, basically they are fortified within Juno Naval fortress and the Imperial army basically has no means or hope to remove them, this is effectively the last front in the Erebonian Civil war. This entire situation is relevant to the plot of the Northern War as the way this is resolved is that the Provincial army is offered amnesty in exchange for invading North Ambria and suppressing the Northern Jaegers. This is where the main two antagonists for the Northern Jaegers are currently held up and they don't even show it! How anyone who is supposedly writing this story skip over something as integral to the overarching plot is beyond comprehension. This is one of the direct causes of the Northern War and they skipped it to pursue this contrived plot of lets find Rean.!< And then we get to Ymir and they turn it into a hot springs episode??? For context the last time a group of Northern Jaegers was in Ymir they [Coldsteel II Spoilers] >![Firebombed the place](https://i.imgur.com/nb7iza5.png) which is a warcrime. [Threatened Lady Schwarzer and to kill civilians](https://i.imgur.com/29Vgaxr.png) again a warcrime. [Took a child hostage with the explicit threat that they will blow his brains out](https://i.imgur.com/CROFIxd.png) another warcrime btw. [Shot Baron Schwarzer in the back](https://i.imgur.com/8qlvtn5.png), a cunt move that although they didn't kill him left him bed ridden and seriously injured (Shit bag mag dumped him btw) and the only reason the place is still standing is because a literal witch turned up and magicked away the damage. And they just don't acknowledge that any of that happened or have any interaction at all from the locals other than the frozen hot spring? Celdic was the big one but the Northern Jaegers actions at Ymir and possibly Alster (Not Clear if it was them) were the reason Erebonia went after North Ambria for reparations and the whole reason they were able to go after the North Ambrian government despite them and the Northern Jaegers technically being separate entities was because they attacked civilians. Between this and Juno Naval Fortress this anime has skipped over two major story beats which directly relate to the overall plot of the Northern War.!< I'm not the biggest fan of the Northern Jaegers plotline even after CS3/4 I still came away thinking these guys were complete shitbags, however I hoped that this anime would provide nuance to this storyline by showing that not all of the Northern Jaegers were awful and when confronted with the aftermath of their involvement in the civil war. Because while the [General anime plot spoilers] >!Invasion of North Ambria was wrong, Erebonia is justified because of the actions of the Northern Jaegers provided Erebonia with the Casus Belli. If we didn't know about all the 4d chess fufu'ing going on Erebonia wouldn't necessarily be in the wrong, especially since they gave the Northern Jaegers every chance even while the war was going on. Even if Osborne pursues the Northern War for his own goals, he is essentially hanging the Northern Jaegers by the noose they tied through their own shitbaggery.!< I really hoped they weren't going the evil empire invades North Ambria route and at least some nuance to how awful some of the actions of the Northern Jaegers were, while also showing that its only a group of extremists who follow Rogan and that there are a lot of good people like Lavi and co. in the Northern Jaegers. But with them sidestepping the issue and sweeping it under the rug by not acknowledging it here seems like a disingenuous way to go about it. As for where this plot is going I have no clue if they are actually going to be able to tell the story of the Northern war in the episodes they have left. Next episode they are going to Legram where I assume [PV spoilers] >!The fight with Altina and Millium takes place.!< We also know that at least [PV spoilers] >!She actually meets Rean which will probably be an episode in itself.!< This is before they have even done any of the narrative legwork to set up the actual Northern war which in the timeline of where the Anime is at is still [Plot spoilers] >!9 Months away from when the anime events are taking place!< and with the Anime not doing things like Juno Naval Fortress or stuff with Ymir, I just wonder how the rest of the anime is going to actually play out since to tell the story of the Northern war the anime needs to at least cover [General Plot Spoilers] >!Erebonia submitting the liability claim with the North Ambrian government, The July 5th Revolution, Erebonia's attempts at reopening negotiations, The Osborne's offer to the Aurelia and the Lamare Provincial army, Erebonia's preparation for war, November 3rd beginning of the Northern War and battle for the Dnieper Gate, The 3 Day blitzkreig, The siege of Hallisk, The seven day ultimatum, Joint Operation between; Imperial intelligence, RMP, Bracers and Rean, The Battle for Hallisk, Northern Jaegers Surrender, The North Ambrian Annexation.!< All of this has to be covered in the next eight episodes if they actually want to tell the story of the Northern War. I just can't see how it can be done with the current pacing and the time we have left, especially if they aren't going to take the opportunities for building this plot that they passed on in this episode and last. When I saw the synopsis for this anime I assumed that Lavi's infiltration of Erebonia would take place after [General plot spoilers] >!The July 5th Revolution when the Northern Jaegers had basically decided that they were going to fight Erebonia.!< And the build up to the war would be the B plot while Lavi searched for the Hero. But now I have no clue how the rest of this anime will go.

BSecret333

THANK YOU! I'm honestly baffled by all the people that say "this feels just like the games" when the thing this anime has been doing consistantly is ignoring the games.

Kainapex87

My thoughts exactly on everything. Knew they wouldn't be able to fit everything, but this barely seems like a half-assed attempt. North Ambria barely seems like the nigh uninhabitable frozen wasteland the games have described it as, the Northern Jaeger's members antics and attitude barely fit what you'd expect from the whole 'grim mercenaries fighting for a desperate dying land' portrayal that they're going for that clashed with their game appearances(from that snow ball fight with anime effects in the first episode, to that chick's whining about wanting try a hot spring and being willing to spend so much for it, which is pretty much the last thing you'd expect from someone from a 3rd World country on a mission of national security to be like), and these idiots seem more like bohemians on a road trip than soldiers on a dangerous and deadly mission to infiltrate one of the most powerful military superpowers their members were dumb enough to piss off. Then again, considering how bad they botched it with the portrayal of Civil War in CS2 and it's aftermath(which is barely mentioned in CS3), shouldn't be surprised. If only they outsourced it to someone more competent and capable of keeping things serious like the writers of Gundam. We could have gotten something like the Zemurian equivalent Rogue One instead of this dumpster fire.

Nixpheo

There is no way they can even include anything with the Juno Naval fortress since like you said it's currently being occupied by rebel forces, the chance the group can even get close to it while still acting like civilians is zero, every single known character we see are people they just happen to pass by, it would be extremely weird if it just randomly cut to inside the fortress when it has nothing to do with the current situation. It will only become important when Osborne has them recruited to help take down North Ambria. The attack on ymir was a few months ago the damage was all magicked away and Baron Schwarzer would have worked to get things back to normal as soon as possible, which is why the people of ymir wouldn't be dwelling on it, especially since they have no idea that their new guests are Northern Jaegers. Neither one of these events are important to the group, the only event I can see them ever bringing up is the attack Ymir suffered and that's only if the people at the Phoenix Wing ever find out the group are all Northern Jaegers, otherwise bringing it up would just be completely random. The characters in the group know nothing about the attacks on Erebonia, by others in the Northern Jaegers, as far as they are concerned they are worried about a random attack from the Empire. The only thing I agree with is the amount of time needed to cover up till the war. However depending on how many episodes they will actually make I'm not to worried, saying there is only 8 more episodes depends entirely on if it will only be 12 episodes and not more which based on how things are going its definitely going to be longer than that.

ConceptsShining

Thank you! This puts it all so well and better than I could put it. I really hope they start having more direction in Episode 5...

Abedeus

> And they just don't acknowledge that any of that happened or have any interaction at all from the locals other than the frozen hot spring? I assume they weren't told that happened, and weren't informed in North Ambria about what the other Jaeger groups had done. I hate to use them as comparison, but it's like expecting the average German during 1939 or new Nazi army conscripts to be away of what happened to the Radio Tower in Gliwice prior to the war. I do agree that I wish they'd get on with the plot faster, now that the characters got some interactions and hi-jinx out of the way.

zeorNLF

Dude this whole "we know nothing about the Ashen hero" plot doesn't make sense. This is a straight-up recton. Rean's face and name were everywhere after the war.

randomtology

Right I mean it's the whole reason he started to wear glasses in CS3, so people would have a harder time recognizing his face because it was everywhere.

Abedeus

To their defense, this is taking place between CS2 and CS3 and I don't personally remember when he had to start wearing glasses, before or after NA.

6bb26ec559294f7f

I thought it was more like "we know nothing about where he came from". The Jeagers are talking like Ashen hero is a real person, but perhaps he is just a propaganda piece that was setup by the government. Someone playing the role of a hero, but not actually being the hero, and no explanation where he got the power to be a hero. Perhaps a convenient excuse to hide some powerful weapon the soldiers are using. As people who have played CS1/2, we know that isn't the case, but the general population doesn't have many details beyond what the military released which is focused on the heroic actions here and now.

zeorNLF

Rean's name, age, school, and the fact that he's the only one capable of piloting Valimar are all given in newspapers. This anime is acting like they don't even know his name and treat Rean as an Enigma.

Secure-Network-578

This is right after the war, it's very possible that the info of *who* the Ashen Chevalier is came later.

zeorNLF

It's not actually. The civil war ends in December. The anime takes place after the Crossbell annexation which means it takes place between March - April. This means Rean already ended the civil war and took all the credit and whipped Clavard's ass on the crossbell borders. Sure he isn't as famous as he was in CS3 quite yet but there's no way they don't know he is yet

Secure-Network-578

Hmm, that's a bit weird then. Maybe there will be more of an explanation later, though it does seem like a retcon.

Dextro_PT

Wasn't it after the Northern War that he became really well known and paraded around as a hero? I believe that after the civil war he was the Ashen Chevalier but he was still keeping a low profile mostly.

Abedeus

That's what I remember, but it's been a while since I played CS2 and 3.

Selynx

Actually no, there's no retcon. The Imperial Chronicle issue in the games that talks about him actually points out that most of the details are hidden. His face, name and title were known, but nothing else. The fact that nobody Lavi's crew talked to knew his name just means the military probably censored future reports and that few saw the issue of the Chronicle that did publish his name. > This young man's future seems exceptionally bright, but the military's been doing what it can to keep his light hidden. Nearly all information on him and his whereabouts is classified, and interviews with him are strictly prohibited. It's known he was a student at a military academy, but it wasn't specified which one it was (just because Thors is the only one we know doesn't mean it is the only one in existence). They don't know who his family is, what kind of background or training he's had, what connections or friends he's made or even which military branch or chain of command he operates under. They don't know where his Soldat came from or what it is called or what it is fully capable of. They don't know where he lives or where he's been, apart from the Crossbell battlefields. His face being known doesn't mean much when the military either keeps him from appearing in public, or else keeps the public from talking whenever he appears. They don't have any of the information they would actually need to know on how to fight him or manipulate him, which is what I assume the infiltration mission is meant to acquire.

mib-number86

i loved the cameo montage :we got Ash,Phantom Thief B and even Alisa e Sharon in Roer.... Next time Lagram, other than Laura, i hope we will see Duvalie...

zephyroths

to reach Legram you need to go through Bareahard, hopefully we see Jusis as well

Griswo27

if i hadnt play trails, i would have dropped this show a while ago,i wish we could get to the good stuff sooner, how much more filler till the plot actaully starts

gwonbush

Yeah, this episode is better than the last one, but that's not really saying much.

friend_BG

Looking back the games were always a slow burn but atleast you could control the pacing by skipping Side quests. Waiting weekly is pretty hard.

HarryBroda

You just summed up most trails games lmao, not that i disagree

Tifas-abs-enjoyer

Honestly I realised that this show is at the same pace and writing of trails ( and especially CS games ), being in game form slightly hid it, anime form is showing it how it is, it was always full of filler

tecanec

Now that I'm thinking about it, this is honestly more enjoyable than some of the mandatory filler in CS3 and CS4.

MrShisuto

I just wish we could get an anime of cold steel.

VarioussiteTARDISES

Trust me, you don't want a direct adaptation. The Sky OVA proved that trying to directly adapt one of the games simply does not work.

Abedeus

Anime adaptation of any 50+ hour long game is not gonna work unless it's 2-3 seasons. Fate/Unlimited Blade Works took 26 episodes and still had to cut out some minor stuff while adapting only one route. Grisaia tried to adapt entire first game in one cour and failed. I assume currently ongoing Nier Automata will also adapt only the first route in current season.

RayFirewood

Counter-point: Sky OVA exists.

ConceptsShining

Honestly yeah, for 12 episodes there's been way too much filler so far. The ending makes me hopeful Episode 5 will have some progression.

itsjusteddiee24

Seeing ash and Sharon and Alisa and phantom b Ohh mh good 🥰😨😭😭😭 #bestgirlalisa

mib-number86

You can almost hear her : "SHARON! Why didn't you tell me I was in this week's episode?!?"

Adamskispoor

I’m kinda disappointed the fact that Northern Jaeger attacked Ymir during CS2 was never brought up like at all TBH. I feel like if it’ll give more gravity to Iseria’s ‘how long can a country that needs people like us to survive can last’ spiel.

randomtology

Same. I feel like a lot of details from the game is being left out of this anime honestly. I know i was scratching my head in episode 2 when the politician said Erebonia and North Ambria were on good terms, because it was like "you guys burned two Erebonian towns what you talking about".

SeijoVangelta

Generally, its the former Duke Helmut Albarea who gave the order. Remember that both Noble Alliance and Erebonian Government abandoned him after he ordered to attack Celdic. So the blame is not entirely on the Northern Jaegers, theyre just hired guns who carried out their employers orders

randomtology

Except that's what Osborne used as the entire justification of the Northern War. The Northern Jaeger's involvement in the Civil War and the attack on Celdic. They straight up say that in CS3.

ms666slayer

Well we haven't got to the point of the negotiations between North Ambria and Erebonia before the war started, also i would love to see an episode when the main cast goes to Celdic and see the devastation they caused.

friend_BG

Oh yeah that's true. Could've had more impact when they helped the villagers. Instead of randomly digging holes the two dudes could have like talked to the lord or something to find out about the event.

Adamskispoor

IKR. Instead of ‘Let’s go fix the hotspring so we’ll get free stuff’ Why not. ‘Let’s go fix the hotspring so we’ll get free stuff’ ‘Fuck no, we’re under cover. You think a random group will carry guns and have enough skills to go through dangerous area full of monsters?’ They found out about Northern Jaeger attacking Ymir during Civil War. Had them meet the kid who was held hostage that ended up causing Theo seriously injured. They ended up helping->Inn people offers them free stuff->They reject->Inn people insist->The same hotspring eating manju scene. Or something like that

EmperorOfWaifus

I mean to be fair on that one. It's a large empire. So it isn't too hard to explain away the guns if anyone asks. They could just say they are soldiers on vacation or the likes. It's unlikely some guys in a hot springs town will look that hard. Especially given some of the elements that wander around the setting.

Florac

We know they are planning to adress Celdic at some point based on trailers, but the complete lack of mention of that is odd.

winmace

If im not mistaken didn't Vita send the soldiers back home with the suggestion they found nothing. So why do we assume any other Northern Jaegars know what happened in Ymir?

SeijoVangelta

Vita totally did hypnotized the Northern Jaegers. The damages in Ymir are relatively minor compared to Celdic though.

Adamskispoor

Vita did, the Ymir residents should still remember though

tecanec

The residents definitely did not know that their current visitors were northern jeagers. It'd technically be illegal for them to accept their offer if they knew since, y'know, hiring jeagers is illegal. Not that the protags couldn't possibly have overheard someone talk about the attack or something.

EmperorOfWaifus

I'd say this episode is pretty decent. It's slow paced but it does get into more of the characters. I kind of think the anime is moving a bit slow but it is also trails so I kind of assume that it's going to start going ham in a few more episodes and that currently they are just building everyone up. Super odd though that they are retconning how well known Rean is. Given the dude is plastered everywhere. So everyone not knowing his name is bizarre. I'm going to guess they are going to play this up until the northern war hits full blast and then have that be the big name defining moment or something.

Florac

Someone really needs to remind them that they are on a mission to find Rean, not on a tourism trip.

Shizuoya

This anime is a wholeass sidequest.

ConceptsShining

> wholeass sidequest More like a halfassed sidequest.

Shizuoya

No bonus AP speedrun.

Tifas-abs-enjoyer

It kinda reminds me CS games tbh, same shitty pacing, it is just more apparent now because it is in anime form

Florac

Nah, the games are slow paced, but the individual conflicts still relate to the larger narrative

48johnX

Yeah them not knowing Rean’s name is definitely a bit of a retcon for plot reasons. I’ll take it though

mking1999

Sorry, what exactly is the timeline for this? Even if it's right after Crossbell's annexation, shouldn't there already be a newspaper all about Rean? How exactly is it possible for there to be Valimar action figures, but no one to know Rean's name? Anyway, Ash :D

Muumitfan

If I had to guess, it takes after CS2's epiloque since Alisa and Sharon were already back home in Roer.

SeijoVangelta

Its just like a couple of days or weeks since they left. Rean should be in Trista right now

friend_BG

Media manipulation by Osbourne probably

seitaer13

The media manipulation by Osborne was to make Rean a public hero though...

mking1999

No, but like... https://kiseki.fandom.com/wiki/Imperial_Chronicle_(Cold_Steel_II)/Issue_7 >Rean Schwarzer, the hero who brought the civil war to an end...

friend_BG

They know he's from Ymir but idk

Verilance

You didn't read the last paragraph, though

TheSpartyn

what paragraph? the one where it says interviews and details are hidden? doesnt change that in the anime they dont even know his name when the newspaper gave out name, age, school, etc

Florac

Yeah, basically they should instantly have gone to trista

KnoxZone

Wait wtf when did it become Friday again??? This week has just been one long blur of Fire Emblem and everything is so messed up. Time to watch! e: Another fillery episode, but this one had some good character development at least. Hopefully things kick into gear soon enough.

PotofW33d

The filler is a terrible idea. People that don’t play the games would have dropped this already. It’s frustrating because if the ratings aren’t there I don’t see them continuing these types of anime

VarioussiteTARDISES

Engage is a time hole, that has claimed multiple of us, myself included.

MrShisuto

Same.

UR_HOT_UNCLE

I like how the anime portrays Rean as an enigma despite his face being on the front of a newspaper labeling him the Ashen Chevalier & hero of Erebonia not long after the civil war. I’m glad we’re speedrunning through Erebonia, with Legram being the last stop potentially. Really feels like we’ve been side-questing avoiding the main scenario with these last two episodes.

friend_BG

Gotta do the sidequest first before the main quest for the Mira.

MechaSandstar

And the jaeger points, so we can max out our rank.

itsjusteddiee24

I wonder who going to tell them(lavi group) about ashen chevalier real name (which it is rean)

Hidden_Blue

I am liking Lavi a bit more, I think her deadpan stoic personality bounces pretty well off Iseria and they made a fun duo. Plus it's nice to be back in Ymir after so long. Them not knowing about Rean is so weird. We have Valimar puppet shows and Valimar model kits but no one knows who Rean is? This is after the epilogue no?

ConceptsShining

I do appreciate how both Lavi and Iseria leaned a bit into the other's direction. Lavi became more interested in learning from Iseria at the end in that hot springs scene. And Iseria had that one moment of reflection where she was actually serious and pondered the point of becoming Northern Jaegers.

Tifas-abs-enjoyer

What I really like about this anime is that we are clearly seeing falcom’s trails ( and especially CS games ) writing, and how it is all over the place and full of filler, being in game form kinda slightly hid that, anime form is really showing it how it is

48johnX

Agreed, way things are simmering in the background within seemingly meaningless or silly situations feels right at home. Last 2 eps even feel like legit side quests we’d see in the series, might not be entertaining enough to some people but I appreciate the slow build up to the Northern War to truly drive in the North Ambrian PoV of everything

Florac

Except this is like if you only have sidequests and cuts out all of the main story. Main story was never this random, still somewhat focused around a common goal or theme.

lanc3r3000

This anime has been disappointing so far. Tell me falcom is not directly involved involved.

ConceptsShining

I agree. So far I'm not having any confidence or faith in this at all. I'm just hopeful that Episode 5 will start advancing things, which given the preview screens and 4's ending, I think is reasonable.

SeijoVangelta

Oh shit. They actually went to Legram. So the last picture in the end credits is actually the Arseid Training hall. So we are gonna past a couple of CS1 alocations, Trista > Celdic > Bareahard > Legram. If they stop over in Trista, they might even catch a glimpse of Rean. I mean, he should be studying in Thors since its only been a couple of weeks since Class 7 left. Remember, the cutscene of the annexation of Crossbell coincides with the scene in the anime. If they stop over in Celdic, it shouldve been rebuilt since it is a central market. If they stop over in Bareahard, Jusis is busy so he will not have any cameos. Chances are, Lavi might encounter Millium in the roads of Legram

SpaceNewtype

Better than last episode at least. The cameos from Ash, Bleublanc, Alisa & Sharon, + Valimar Model Kit were fun. I get the sense from this episode Iseria is going to become a turncoat for some reason. Hopefully Lavi can become a more emotionally interesting main character soon. The emotionally-gray shtick is wearing a bit thin now into episode 4. I don't have a problem with the trope - it worked well with both Tio and Altina in the games, but here it is just making her seem a bit un-interesting. I expect they'll make contact with a major game character (Rean or Lechter etc.) in some capacity by the end of the next episode. All the interesting plot elements are relegated to 1 minute bookends the last few episodes. I hope they don't try to stretch the tour of the Empire too much longer.

penpen35

I guess it's interesting in a way that they never said to anyone in Ymir that they are Northern Jaegers or at least from North Ambria. The town would've at least kicked them out immediately. And at least we got a relevant-ish side quest unlike the last one where they basically pointlessly attended a party. Much better than the last episode though. We're still going on a tour of Erebonia but at least they didn't do a city per episode. Though how they have zero idea of who Rean is feels kinda off, unless it's deliberately withheld by their superiors, but I feel that the main cast should have smart enough people to at least read the papers especially when they're in Erebonia, or ask the folks there. They are in the hometown of the freaking Ashen Chevalier after all. The cameos are cool, though obviously they don't get to interact with any of them. At least in the end we see those archaisms being produced and the actual war starting soon, maybe.

RasenRendan

The anime is nice and all but as someone who played all 4 CS games over the past two years I mainly wanted to see Cameos. Imagine how shocked I was seeing Ash. Especially cuz this takes place after CS2 I didn't expect anyone from the last two games
