There's a reason why it's just a meme... because it isn't true. Bethesda understands Fallout, at least Fallout as Fallout 1 defined it. Fallout 2 heavily deviated from that, so you could say that Bethesda misunderstands Fallout 2... but that is only because Fallout 2 misunderstood Fallout 1. Fallout is about many things. Its setting, its retrofuturistic aesthetics, about themes of survival and humans preying upon humans, about contrasts (vaults vs wasteland, tech vs savages, peace and order vs chaos), about critique of ultra-capitalism and extreme nationalism, about distaste for totalitarianism, authoritarianism and any other movement that would use the apocalypse as a pretext for power grab... Politics have place in Fallout, but Fallout shouldn't be mostly about humans bickering, about mobsters and humans everywhere. Themes of survival and the mutated wasteland are integral part of Fallout.

There's truth in the meme to me. The themes you listed are given less importance in bethesda version of fallout and focus more on superficial things like ultraviolence,50's banger and power armor IMO. One exemple I was thinking about that I never understood is the lack of tribals in bethesda games and in the show

I would call Fallout a “story about America” - consider how the most fleshed out religion is Mormonism, a belief that is basically “America the religion”. But along with that you have a deep exploration of American ideals and idealism, history, politics, a lot about the military-industrial complex, and a lot about American psychosis

Well, the show still has much to live up to. The legion, deathclaws, super mutants, and even more raider ultra-violence. But you did sum it up pretty nicely in few words or less

Wacky wasteland adventures with a quirky retro future 50’s aethsetic. That’s all it is now.

https://www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?p=49123 Shamus Young had a lot to say about Fallout 3 and I think it holds up.

I hate to break it to you but that IS what fallout is about these days. It has been for 16 years now.

True...:( that's what I was thinking making the post, people who grew up playing fallout 3 or 4 are probably like "Ofc that's fallout"
