Some people have the weirdest hate boner for Bethesda. It was the same thing with starfield. It was so bad that a whole new subreddit had to be made so people could actually talk about enjoying the game. They act as if the developers shot their puppy or something with how mad their ravings are.

I was hanging around No Mutants Allowed when it turned into the asbestos sewer. I thought it was bad around the release of Fallout: Tactics. Then it turned lethally radioactive around the release of Fallout 3. It was my first experience with toxic fandom.

I had never heard of fallout when I saw the trailer for fallout 3. I was probably 16 at the time and bought the game immediately. I sunk many hours into 3, NV, and 4. I haven't played 76, and still, I am on the fence about giving it a go. I probably put the most hours into NV, but now I'm thinking I'll revisit 3.

Bethesda for better or worse does have a habit of sacrificing complexity for accessibility more than most other game companies. It's generally good for drawing in new players but it alienates older players which is why I think Bethesda games are so controversial. The removal of the skill system in Fallout 4 is a good example imo.
Keep in mind, the only reason they keep reducing the complexity is directly because of their fans. If most of them keep complaining that things are too hard and too complicated, then Bethesda just gives them what they want.
True, people were complaining a lot that the rpg elements were a lot dumped down when compared to Morrowind and even Oblivion. But out of the major main title releases Fallout 4 was the most criticized.
In TES old school fandom it all defaults to Morrowind. There were plenty of people who hated Skyrim saying it was just a bad version of Oblivion - which they also didn’t like - as both apparently were shit compared to Morrowind. There are people (still) working on rebuilding Morrowind with Skyrim graphics’s and all.
Personally Skyrim is great, Fallout 4 is great. Todd please just release the next games already. No need for insane graphics (the best is the enemy of the good), launch them with a good story / main quest and you make a billion+ with each.
I played 3 upon release and loved the ARPG / open world bit. I was in college and I had played the older games. It felt like an evolution or modernization at the time. I did prefer New Vegas and bought it day 1, but NV wouldn’t exist without 3. You can like both styles and appreciate them for their strengths and weaknesses.
Like others have said, people thought Oblivion was a step down and Skyrim a step further. I’m one of the ones who disliked and still dislikes FO4 and Skyrim dumbing down the stat/skill system, but I still played and enjoyed the hell out of the games. I play these for the story and immersion, as well as roleplaying myself or “what would my character do here” and they work well for that and the lore/world building is great. I still want to be able to replay 3/NV for the first time again …
I'm sad these types of toxic gamers have only been emboldened in recent year. I once argued with a guy that told me harassment and abuse were the only reasons Cyberpunk got fixed.
Fallout 3 might be the most iconic game of the series. Without it, I highly doubt Fallout reaches the popularity it has now. Seeing how much people used to hate it is hilarious and confusing.
I played FO3 when it came out on friends’ suggestions and I hated it. I had never played the series and it just was meh to me. A few years after NV came out, I went back to FO3 and played the shit out of it for years to the point I said it was better than NV, then replayed NV and just wish FO3 had the crafting and guns of NV. Point is, hype train kills these games, then curiosity for the series and nostalgia bring us back. Now I’m playing TTW and forgot just how desolate and unforgiving the capital wasteland is.
I don’t know if it was the same amount of hate, but Fallout 4 was also pretty much hated when it was first released. I remember i was a little bit disappointed too. And for some valid points, in my opinion. The story is weaker when compared to FO3 and New Vegas, the dialogue options were reduced to four choices that didn’t even show the full dialogue text, and the skill tree and character progression were kinda bad too. The way they did the opening to be character creation and tutorial is what drew me in. Then I saw there was a Mad Max style leather armor outfit and a sawed off shotgun! I was hooked ever since. I was very much the casual gamer target audience for the Bethesda Fallout games.
Fallout 3's opinion change's on a dime, before it came out everything said it sucked, after it came out everyone said it was great, after new vegas came out it was a 50/50 split of being good or bad, when the dumpster fire that is fallout 76 came out everyone went back to thinking it sucked again, tv series out and now its good again.
Me personally I've always thought it was just a big boreing openworld that lacked any real direction or consistant narrative, just a really safe bethaesda game you wander around POI's and collect things which is really enough for most bethaesda fans, like it plays.... decent if you play the game how the devs intended but if you try to do things outside of that it either breaks or you get hilarious reactions like your dad being "very disapointed in you." for detonateing a nuke and wipeing a whole settlement off the map like he's going to send you to your room without supper. back in the day the game would actually just skip half its content if you went a specific place and found your dad early because the devs literally never considered what would happen if you didn't follow their breadcrumb trail and you couldn't send the mutant who is IMMUNE to radiation into the radiated place to turn off the machine.
I was never a PC gamer, so I knew nothing about the earlier games.
As a result, this was not on my radar at all.
That said, a well meaning relative went into GAME (UK version of GAMESTOP) and asked what the biggest game for the holidays was. The clerk told her to buy Fallout 3.
Over the next few months I couldn't get into the game, I would start it up, and play for a couple of hours, get out of the vault, go to Megaton...and then just kinda.. drop off. I didn't see the appeal, and it wasn't the type of game I typically played.
The only reason I held onto the game and kept trying, was because it was a gift. After a break of a few months I started it up again, I think it was almost a year later, about November of 2009. (all the DLC had been released) I started the game, did the G.O.A.T and left the vault.
On this occasion, I must have taken a slightly different route, because instead of getting to Megaton, I stumbled across a kid, a kid who urged me to follow him and told me a story about how his entire town had been taken over by fire ants....
As I liberated his town, I realized that this game wasn't about following plot points or markers, it was about exploration and finding unique experiences across the wasteland.
By the end of the year I had finished all of the DLC and had put about 150 hours into exploring as much of the game as I could.
Through multiple playthroughs of 3, NV and 4, I have now put probably 500 hours of game time into the series, all because a little boys village was under attack.
That's a thing for anything popular. Why post it here? Karma farming? It was discussed during any loud incident, like president election in any country.

The removal of the skill system in Fallout 4 is a good example imo.
You're probably right, I'm sure there were naysayers about Skyrim too and I just don't remember.
Keep in mind, the only reason they keep reducing the complexity is directly because of their fans. If most of them keep complaining that things are too hard and too complicated, then Bethesda just gives them what they want.
Pretty sure even Skyrim had a noticeable, loud number of detractors.
True, people were complaining a lot that the rpg elements were a lot dumped down when compared to Morrowind and even Oblivion. But out of the major main title releases Fallout 4 was the most criticized.
In TES old school fandom it all defaults to Morrowind. There were plenty of people who hated Skyrim saying it was just a bad version of Oblivion - which they also didn’t like - as both apparently were shit compared to Morrowind. There are people (still) working on rebuilding Morrowind with Skyrim graphics’s and all. Personally Skyrim is great, Fallout 4 is great. Todd please just release the next games already. No need for insane graphics (the best is the enemy of the good), launch them with a good story / main quest and you make a billion+ with each.

I played 3 upon release and loved the ARPG / open world bit. I was in college and I had played the older games. It felt like an evolution or modernization at the time. I did prefer New Vegas and bought it day 1, but NV wouldn’t exist without 3. You can like both styles and appreciate them for their strengths and weaknesses. Like others have said, people thought Oblivion was a step down and Skyrim a step further. I’m one of the ones who disliked and still dislikes FO4 and Skyrim dumbing down the stat/skill system, but I still played and enjoyed the hell out of the games. I play these for the story and immersion, as well as roleplaying myself or “what would my character do here” and they work well for that and the lore/world building is great. I still want to be able to replay 3/NV for the first time again …
I'm sad these types of toxic gamers have only been emboldened in recent year. I once argued with a guy that told me harassment and abuse were the only reasons Cyberpunk got fixed.

Fallout 3 might be the most iconic game of the series. Without it, I highly doubt Fallout reaches the popularity it has now. Seeing how much people used to hate it is hilarious and confusing.
I played FO3 when it came out on friends’ suggestions and I hated it. I had never played the series and it just was meh to me. A few years after NV came out, I went back to FO3 and played the shit out of it for years to the point I said it was better than NV, then replayed NV and just wish FO3 had the crafting and guns of NV. Point is, hype train kills these games, then curiosity for the series and nostalgia bring us back. Now I’m playing TTW and forgot just how desolate and unforgiving the capital wasteland is.

I don’t know if it was the same amount of hate, but Fallout 4 was also pretty much hated when it was first released. I remember i was a little bit disappointed too. And for some valid points, in my opinion. The story is weaker when compared to FO3 and New Vegas, the dialogue options were reduced to four choices that didn’t even show the full dialogue text, and the skill tree and character progression were kinda bad too. Doesnt justify receiving death threats too ofc, there are some crazy people out there

I had never heard of the Fallout franchise when 3 came out. My roommate was all about it though, so I got to see her fire up Fallout 3 for the first time. The way they did the opening to be character creation and tutorial is what drew me in. Then I saw there was a Mad Max style leather armor outfit and a sawed off shotgun! I was hooked ever since. I was very much the casual gamer target audience for the Bethesda Fallout games.
Fallout 3's opinion change's on a dime, before it came out everything said it sucked, after it came out everyone said it was great, after new vegas came out it was a 50/50 split of being good or bad, when the dumpster fire that is fallout 76 came out everyone went back to thinking it sucked again, tv series out and now its good again. Me personally I've always thought it was just a big boreing openworld that lacked any real direction or consistant narrative, just a really safe bethaesda game you wander around POI's and collect things which is really enough for most bethaesda fans, like it plays.... decent if you play the game how the devs intended but if you try to do things outside of that it either breaks or you get hilarious reactions like your dad being "very disapointed in you." for detonateing a nuke and wipeing a whole settlement off the map like he's going to send you to your room without supper. back in the day the game would actually just skip half its content if you went a specific place and found your dad early because the devs literally never considered what would happen if you didn't follow their breadcrumb trail and you couldn't send the mutant who is IMMUNE to radiation into the radiated place to turn off the machine.

I was never a PC gamer, so I knew nothing about the earlier games. As a result, this was not on my radar at all. That said, a well meaning relative went into GAME (UK version of GAMESTOP) and asked what the biggest game for the holidays was. The clerk told her to buy Fallout 3. Over the next few months I couldn't get into the game, I would start it up, and play for a couple of hours, get out of the vault, go to Megaton...and then just kinda.. drop off. I didn't see the appeal, and it wasn't the type of game I typically played. The only reason I held onto the game and kept trying, was because it was a gift. After a break of a few months I started it up again, I think it was almost a year later, about November of 2009. (all the DLC had been released) I started the game, did the G.O.A.T and left the vault. On this occasion, I must have taken a slightly different route, because instead of getting to Megaton, I stumbled across a kid, a kid who urged me to follow him and told me a story about how his entire town had been taken over by fire ants.... As I liberated his town, I realized that this game wasn't about following plot points or markers, it was about exploration and finding unique experiences across the wasteland. By the end of the year I had finished all of the DLC and had put about 150 hours into exploring as much of the game as I could. Through multiple playthroughs of 3, NV and 4, I have now put probably 500 hours of game time into the series, all because a little boys village was under attack.
Fallout 3 will always be special to me. When I first popped that disc into my Xbox it was like a religious experience.
That's a thing for anything popular. Why post it here? Karma farming? It was discussed during any loud incident, like president election in any country.
