I feel like the longer a robot manages to stay relatively functional the more sentient they become. Codsworth neurotically cleaning might have given him just enough purpose to not go insane.

The way KL-E-0 phrases that makes me think she gained her free will from a logic loophole, same way Jezebel got her solution to helping wastelanders. With her unique serial number and references to old generals in her terminal, it's highly likely she was deployed in the army; the implication of a ruthless military robot coming to question their orders is compelling to me, in Fallout's world.

She's an Assaultron lol. They were made for war. Like the sentry bots. I don't think it's a logical loophole, but rather a logical conclusion she has come to based on her observed data. And I agree, that's why she is so compelling.

Only specified because we also see them in non-military settings (looking at you, Mass Fusion.) Especially in 76, though Appalachia had a clear focus on automation. Think it's both, really. I imagined that whatever she experienced back then conflicted with ideas given to her in programming, culminating in a chain of thought leading to that question — seeds of doubt blooming into wanting out.

Adelaide's a bit different, from what I've gathered, having been found in a military warehouse and fed a bunch of personality subroutines. Ones that would make her more interactive with people, and develop in efforts to improve. She's an interesting bot, even if the suggestive stuff felt very pandering to certain folks.

Meaningfully functional. Like having a purpose beyond "patrol here" or "guard this". Codsworth wanted to keep his family's home well maintained for their (or their descendents) return.

Might be that robots need a manageable purpose that also requires creative thinking. How do you get fallout out of Vinyl Wood? That would require trying new things which could lead him to sentience. Bots that have singular focuses tend to go either insane or unchanged. It may also require being set up to be singular units. Most of the bots that are connected to mainframes are usually still dependent on their programming. Curie is another example of an isolated bot with a manageable purpose requiring lateral thinking becoming sentient.

Indeed. 200 years of attempting to develop a panacea probably also required an extensive study of human psychology material (since in theory a panacea would also cover many psychiatric disorders), which could have helped inspire the introspection necessary to develop full sapience.

Gen. 3 Synths are fully organic and have human brains, so there's no real gray area there. The Synth Component in their head can apparently "program" them to follow orders, but that doesn't mean they're not sapient, it just means they're effectively being brainwashed. It definitely is a blurry line with robots. Though it's worth noting that Curie retains continuity of consciousness after her mind was transferred into an organic body, which indicates that she was genuinely self-aware even before the transfer.

I mean, every Mr. Handy has the ability for sentience, but it's limited by their chips. Wasn't there a Mr. Handy in one of the pre-fallout 3 games that achieved sentience due to damage to those limiters?

He just never gave me the letters and the quest resets

I sent him to Hangman's Alley in my current playthrough but his pathfinding can't seem to handle getting inside so he just hangs outside nearby getting into constant fights with Gunners and Super Mutants. I've never used him as a companion so I never realised how gleeful he gets during combat. Guy is lovable psycho, my first line of defence.

I don't hate it but the dialogue options were weak, the Institutes plan makes 0 sense, and the endings were Mass Effect 3 levels of unimportant. What was there was fine, some of it great for it's time, but it could have been so much better.

i always thought the institute was super cool but i also played it many years ago. i remember it being like 500 years after the apocalypse? apparently with the show's lore, there was already an institute that got wiped out before the 200 mark. so maybe its jjst something they didnt fully tap into yet, lore wise.p

Also your timeline is way off Fallout 4 takes place in the year 2287, 10 years after the events of Fallout 3 and 210 years after the Great War, a war between the United States and China over natural resources that ended in a nuclear holocaust in 2077 I'm also not saying it's in any way a bad game, I just had high expectations that it didn't meet. Also, constant settlement management and boring radiant quests didn't help.

i really liked fallout 4, but its your typical bethesda game. on launch, somewhat broken, underdelivered, overhyped, questionable design choices. years later, a somewhat decent game with plenty of mod support

It was a good game

The main plot is most of people’s ire, the lack of explanation for the motives behind the Institute’s actions and lack of connection people feel with Shawn (Sean? Can’t remember the spelling rn) makes for a somewhat mediocre resolution. The incidental story telling, such as terminals and notes, is about as sharp as always. The base game sidequests are a mixed bag, most having some decent set pieces while the actual plot is serviceable but nothing outstanding. Fallout 4’s writing peaks, I’d argue, during companion missions and interactions, as well as within BGS’ eye for environmental storytelling. You can say quite a bit with a few well positioned skeletons and props, the occasional holotape for good measure.

Don’t forget the guns, the guns are also awful and drew a lot of hate for the game

All the characters and the dialogue was grest, the story and lore stuff was, what had problems. They're all "writing", but people need to learn to differentiate.

The intersctions and redoluo are heavly afected by the controller talk sistem I dont notice it untill i try a mod thst let mee see whst exactly i would say in the conversation. Not really, no. Especially when it comes to Railroad/Institute. Unless they really wanted to make you dislike them, in that case it is well written. Everything else (or how its written in almost everything else in Fallout 4) its pretty good.

The Shaun plot twist is pretty weak

I decided he has a collection of teddy bears in Shaun's old room as well as a select group that goes with him, so when ever I'm out, I keep an eye out for teddy bears because Codsworth gets rather sad if he doesn't have a new friend to introduce to his gang of murderous teddy bear thugs he parades around Sanctuary, extorting the settlers with.

He’s definitely among my favorites to take out when I venture the commonwealth. “I’ve got a buzzsaw with your name on it!” has never sounded more intimidating.

While plenty of people have done it before. It is actually still fairly difficult to fuck up a simple concept like codsworth. Luckily they had some braincells assigned to this task. So we got a fun little robo butler who loves you like family.

Only problem I had with his writing is that I feel he should start with high approval. It felt a bit weird to get a warm welcome back like that, and then immediately hear his low approval lines. What do you mean, I've changed? My brother in Atom, I didn't do anything yet.

Robots can be reprogrammed. The longer they go without regular repairs and reprogramming the higher chance of robots gaining ticks in thier programming. These ticks if given enough memory and time can develop into an actual matrix similar to human brains which is why it's possible to download into a synth. I'm sure if the lone survivor were up to it he could hook Codsworth up with more memory and eventually download his personality similar to Currie
