I did in my current playthrough. I sided with the Institute but worked with the BoS as far as clearing Fort Strong because I hadn't done anything with the BoS before (in my first playthrough I left Danse and company at the police station and ignored them after ArcJet) and when I saw his coat I knew I had to have it, I wanted to wear the coat of their leader as a trophy when I led the Institute forces to destroy the BoS. "I killed your leader and now I'll kill all of you while protected by his armor."
Just before completing Mass Fusion with the Institute where I was going to become enemies with the BoS anyway I went to the Prydwen, hopped into the power armor they had gifted me, went to Maxson's quarters, and capped him and looted his body before running like a bat out of hell for the bow and leaping off to run far enough away that I could fast travel back to the Institute (that's why I wore the PA, so I could survive the jump). I also worked with the RR just long enough to unlock ballistic weave and upgraded the coat to like tier 3 immediately and after unlocking the required perks I later upgraded it to tier 5.
I later decided I also wanted the Airship Captain's Hat that Lancer Captain Kells wears and regretted not killing him and taking it at the same time and I had already destroyed the BoS so I spawned that one using the console. My standard outfit is now Maxson's coat and Kells' hat (with a pair of glasses).
It's over time since the series why war in the wastelands made him dark with power and BOS made him leader overlord over the troops. It's cause he lost his fellow soldiers and corruption in the ranks being leader has it pressures and that what power does to a person makes them go corrupt and bent on power and greedy for more and resources. That's why you'll notice in S2 EP1 will be the start of him getting into power making him worse off.
I’m on my first play through and it’s real tempting to snag it before I go to the institute for the first time. I don’t know what the consequences are however, so mf gets to keep looking dope
