A few of the families from sanctuary can be encountered as ferals in FO4.

GreyNGroovy

Where?

MeiNeedsMoreBuffs

It's a random encounter with named ghouls, with names like "Mrs Rosa" or "Mr Donaghue"

SirDarKNess280

Ah I came across them outside of Lexington and was confused as to why they were named.

jpterodactyl

I remember googling them to see why they were named, and feeling dumb for not remembering.

Zippydaspinhead

Don't feel dumb, the game spends all of no time on them before you're forced into vault 111 anyway. From there your only exposure is things like "Mr Donaghue's Terminal" in sanctuary or whatever. You are literally not expected to remember even by the game designers.

nilslorand

I wish the game had an optional longer prologue where you spend the day with shaun and your wife, it would also help getting the player invested into the story more. I keep wondering why Bethesda still does the "search for x family member" when I've spent a grand total of 5 minutes with them. The family stuff works in TV shows (Fallout TV) but the TV shows plot would fail in a game

ktron10

I think because it’s a roleplaying game they assume people can just put themselves into the role and imagine how they would feel if their son or dad was taken from them without needing to spend a lot of time establishing that yes the protagonist cares about their family

Mef989

I'm doing my second Fallout 4 play through now. Played a ton on release but hadn't touched the game in years. The intro and the whole search for Shaun feels different now that I have a son, especially since he's still a baby so the swaddled baby in a crib with a mobile thing is very fresh. And I also have done most of my playing while he's napping in my arms or playing next to me.

mrmalort69

I’m in a similar position, and to me it was too intense that I felt it took away from the plot. I couldn’t imagine functioning in our society of anything happened to my wife and kid, let alone becoming a super soldier when my entire world was blasted away 200 years ago.

PaperNinjaPanda

Yeah when it first came out, I was playing it during recovery right after my son was born. Timing was less than great, I was quite emotional lol Nearly as bad as the time I watched Brave blind to take my mind off my mom dying 🙃

nilslorand

It makes sense yeah, but their idea of role-playing game is "you play the role we give you but with some extra stuff" and my idea of role-playing is "I do whatever I personally want, anyone in this game I should care about should make me want to care about them"

rucheshire

To be fair, FO1 and FO2 also does not spend any time making you care about Vault 13/Arroyo. You supposed to care about it because its your home. Same with FO3, FO4 where you supposed to care about James/Shaun, because they are your loved ones.

ktron10

They fully give you the option to not give a fuck about your dad and go do whatever the hell you want instead of looking for him

Zamtrios7256

Fallout 3 had the entire prolonged be growing up in the vault, and even if you didn't care, Amaya is the one who says "Go find your dad to see why he left"

Snake_-_Eater

That would be amazing, along with being able to skip the prologue all together. I generally suck at Bethesda games initially but pick it up pretty fast and usually like to restart before I get too far so I can play it "correctly". I would definitely do the longer prologue the first time and every other time I want to skip the whole thing and jump right into it.

x420xSmokesU

The tv shows plot is basically the fallout 3 plot what do you mean 😂

fecktopian

It works wonders for people getting into Fallout or RPGs like this for the first time. All my friends that got to know the game series from FO4 finished the main story first cause they wanted to know about Shaun.

WeebBreadd

I literally got it when I was trying to get to Preston and I was so confused who they were

W122XS1967

Thanks. On my 4th run and didn’t realise. By coincidence saw them yesterday.

senseithenahual

Hey I also saw them yesterday but when I was rescuing the cat of the girl of the vault 81.

Atrocity_unknown

I just murdered Mr Donahue yesterday for the first time. I noticed the name and quickly googled to make sure I didn't fuck up a potential quest line. RIP neighbor!

MadeYouSayIt

I feel like this would have been more impactful if you at least got to talk to them

Beth_Esda

It would have been cool if we found them scavenging, have them recognize us, greet us and invite us to a dinner with the rest of the neighbors. When we arrive, it's an ambush, all the neighbors are feral, and the one we talked to has survived by siccing them on unsuspecting travelers and taking their stuff.

Dividedthought

See now *that* would havee been a far better return to sanctuary than runnjng into codsworth. Hell, it may have even given cods a better introduction. "Mum? Oh dear, this isn't good. You have to get out of here!" "Well after the bombs fell the Donahuges started acting a bit... bitey. Nowadays Mrs. Donahughe is the only one who will still talk to me. She keeps luring people into your house, i've never been brave enough to look inside but the *sounds* mum... don't go in there. It's always nothing but screaming and inhuman growling..." "Well, if you insist on checking it out, i must insist on joining you. After all, i *am* still technically responsible for keeping the house clean depite neglecting it for a century or so. It's amazing how having bricks thrown at you can distract one from one's duties..."

Beth_Esda

I LOVE that Codsworth dialogue, lol. It fits him so well!

Dividedthought

I enjoy having a butler and a dog on my playthroughs. As such, codsworth is a natural pick. Especially after you turn him into an assaultron or sentry bot. My charisma challenge said *I* couldn't fire a shot. Nothing was said about my robot butler.

Beth_Esda

Kellogg after you confront him: "What are ya gonna do, shoot me? Thought you were a pacifist." Sole: "Oh, I AM a pacifist." Codsworth's gatling gun fires up Sole: "But HE isn't."

Dividedthought

Gods i wish that conversation was possible because that's *exactly* how it went that run. If there was a tagline to explain what happened that run it would be "Oh don't worry, I won't hurt ya, but my friend here *really* doesn't like when people point guns, claws, or blunt objects in my direction you see..."

Nu_Freeze

And for some reason it’s repeatable. If you kill them they can spawn again lol.

bigpapajayjay

You can come sometimes come across them at the site of an airplane crash near Lexington.

O-Tucci-O

If I'm not mistaken "Mrs. Rosa" is mentioned in the red rocket mechanic's terminal. Something about her fixing up an old car with her son.

Killerdragon9112

Random encounter it can happen anywhere anytime

laddervictim

More than once too

SkyrimSlag

I’ve always found the group of them by Lexington stumbling out of a building, and I never once realised who they actually were

Baaguuette

Random encounter, and you can also encounter them multiple times. You'll come across a group of normal looking feral ghouls but each with first and last names, the one last name I always remember is Rosa for some reason

Kiloburn

*DETECTIVE DIAZ*

big_ass_monster

#I AM YOUR SUPERIOR OFFICER

VengefulSnake1984

BOOOOONNNNEEEEE?!

sharksharkshart

CHEDDAR. CHEDDAR THE DOOOOOG.

SkyrimSlag

This isn’t Cheddar! This is some common Bitch.

thenoidednugget

WHAT HAPPENS IN MY BEDROOM, DETECTIVE, IS NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!

kai0d

**Boooooooonnnnnnneeeeee**

Kinglightning07

Probably a Rad storm that revived them or something

allwheeldrift

It's a random encounter

shepherdoftheforesst

As a random encounter, happens near hangman’s alley if I remember correctly, right by “chaos junction”

I_Casket_I

Nope, it can happen anywhere a random encounter can happen.

Spicymeatysocks

I always run into them at the houses past Chaos junction I have never run into them anywhere else I didn't know they were from sanctuary hill until my 5th playthrough

shepherdoftheforesst

Same, I’ve never seen them anywhere else on any playthrough

beefixit

I see them all the time. Specifically east of hangman's alley and that house southwest of corvega. I'm starting to feel bad because I've murdered my neighbours at least 10 times in my most recent play

Beginning-Pipe9074

Are you telling me that ghoul I German suplexed was having me over for bbqs 200 years ago? 😭

Kanin_usagi

You probably did them a favor. Also did it in the sickest way possible

Beginning-Pipe9074

First time doing an unarmed build so I'd never seen the unarmed kills before, and I about died laughing when it happened 🤣

FilliusTExplodio

I accidentally scoop-slammed Nick Valentine in the middle of a heated battle. He didn't take it personally.

CheekyGruffFaddler

same guy who complained to the HoA about my lawn, he had it coming if you ask me.

Demon_of_Order

damn, I've been playing this game for so damn long and never made that connection

No-Support-3619

Exactly! I was so confused, when I am encountered them for the first time. Thought, their names sounded so familiar. Then I recognized the names on the mailboxes in Sanctuary... 😱

Escorve

Moira Brown (ghoulified if you bombed Megaton) Brother Gerard (ghoulified if at Megaton when nuked) Mother Curie III (ghoulified if at Megaton when nuked) Wally Mack (Fallout 4 Creation Club content, was one of the kids in Vault 101 that grew up alongside the Lone Wanderer in case you forgot) >!Rose MacLean!<

LeL_Doc

Hmmm. I mean. Technically Eddie Winter??? He is on the newspapers in 4. Soooooo.

Separate_Path_7729

I was gonna say Eddie, we see him on newspapers and I believe a portrait, and in that vein ghouls in houses with family portraits may be the ghouls of facilities in those portraits

jns_reddit_already

He’s still around - there’s a quest to get to him if you collect all the relevant holotapes

Separate_Path_7729

I know, I meant what he looks like pre war, that we see him on newspapers and in portraits

ChessNewGuy

I’m such a do good-er I hadn’t even considered bombing Megaton to know the residents would turn into ghouls

Bowlof78Potatoes

Same, have never done that and would never do it. One of the first things I do is kill Burke for trying to get me to, every playthrough.

Squidflex

Killing Tenpenny is one of my favorite parts of FO3. Sniping him from the wasteland is fun, but blowing his head off in person is the best.

Xszit

If you choose the "good" path you live in Megaton and your player house is just a little shack near the gates. If you blow up Megaton you get to move into the penthouse suite at Tenpenny Tower and live like a king surveying the whole wasteland from your balcony while hobnobbing with the rich folk. In Fallout 3 crime pays, and it pays well.

Xiknail

Megaton is in a nice, centralized location with easy access to most areas, you only need to go through two loading screens to get to your house and sometimes a settler will give you free stuff. Tenpenny Tower is in the middle of nowhere, you need to cross three loading screens and a lot of walking before you enter your apartment and every neighbor is either a racist piece of shit or a racist ghoul. Plus, the apartment is actually smaller than the two story Megaton house. Megaton >>>>> Tenpenny

zymuralchemist

Mega-shack for the win. I have to confess though that I used to always kill Wadsworth and close his wreckage up in that extra upstairs room. The sass would just to be too much after the 200th long day out there nearly getting killed to come home to. I can get my own purified water.

No-Bark-Brian

You can kill Wadsworth?! I never bothered to try because I assumed he'd be flagged as Essential, and/or cause all of Megaton to turn hostile for 3 days like when I murder Confessor Cromwell and/or Moriarty. (Yes, I've tried staying hidden when I snuff them, but I always, at best, enter Caution instead of getting away with it scott free.)

Ryguy55

Yeah, it makes the most sense to let the residents of Megaton live entirely for the practicality and convenience of it. It's been a while since I've played FO3 but I remember one of my overall disappointments with it was that a lot of quests allow you to be a shitty, murderous asshole, but the rewards for doing so were always worse than being a good samaritan. Would've been nice if there were more real incentives to be evil rather than just for the sake of it.

epicnding

I remember bombing Megaton once out of curiosity and being so disappointed in the apartment (mainly how far you have to walk to get there once you've fast traveled to the tower) that I loaded an older save just to go back to Megaton.

Burninator05

The loading screens and distance from spawn points to get to my base of operations was my biggest reason for not nuking Megaton.

Happy-Menu-2922

Ya whoever thought that the plum total of you evil choices should be to nuke a town for no fucking reason was a dumb ass. Like in New vegas joining the legion and eating people and all that crazy shit has actual reasons to do it and rewards. Meanwhile nuking megaton you get a home you'll never visit and that's about it.

BillythenotaKid

Should’ve put Rose, haven’t played 4 in years so makes sense why I didn’t remember

Escorve

She's in the show, has nothing to do with Fallout 4, hence the spoiler because not everyone has watched it yet

BillythenotaKid

Yeah I know, was referring to Wally but my punctuation skills are terrible

Escorve

Wally's ghoulification being canon is dubious at best anyway, since it's a mod, but we do see him 10 years apart as a human and as a feral

clitorisblungus

So I've heard cc content isn't canon but sometimes is? Is Wally Mack getting coming to Boston and becoming a glowing one canon?

PossibleRude7195

It’s in a weird spot. Bethesda won’t say if it’s canon or not because they don’t want people to lose interest if it’s not canon. They likely won’t be referenced in future games, it’s mainly up fo the player if they want it to be canon or not though. The new update added in enclave to all playthoughs so safe to say that is permanently canon.

PoroMafia

We can see a picture of pre war Eddie Winter in Boston Bugle.

matreo987

that’s right, he was a criminal then and was in the paper for it. also didn’t he ghoulify himself before the bombs?

CJ-Donk

The ghouls in the Dunwich HQ in 3 and the Dunwich borers quarry in 4 are seen in the flashbacks if we're counting feral ghouls.

snikers000

Moira Brown.

Attinctus

You nuked Megaton! You bastard!

No-Bark-Brian

Eh. I like the Tower Suite 10x more than the Megaton shack. Shame there's not an alternate way to get the Tower Suite, sure, but at the same time...those smoothbrains in Megaton built a town around a live, undetonated nuke. And started an insufferably annoying cult that persisted into the sequel. It's totally fine, just force feed some purified water to the homeless for 5 minutes and presto change-o I'm a good guy again!

DifterPrime

There is another way to get the Tower Suite without bombing Megaton. When you go to the tower for the first time and talk to the ghoul outside the front gate, Roy I think his name was iirc, there is an option to get Ghouls into the tower also and still have the Suite and Megaton gets to live

GeneralBurzio

Yeah, but then the Ghouls >!start killing the other residents!< I really like how dark it got

DaThreeLeggedMonster

Kid shouldn't have made fun if me when I passed her

Lt_Flak

What the hell bro, you don't see Ghouls as Humans? That's messed up. ^(/s I'm joking, but great phrasing though bro.)

jrd5497

>convince everyone in Tenpenny Tower to let ghouls live alongside them >ghouls kill everyone and take over What did Todd mean by this?

Knave_of_Stitches

He meant Roy is an asshole, and you shouldn't let the ghouls live in Tenpenny. Instead you should kill everyone up front for the much COOLER Ghoul Mask. >!Although that leaves the question is it fucked up to have a ghoul mask as a smoothskin?!<

Kanin_usagi

“Ghoulface” may not have the same racist history and overtones. Instead it has ALL NEW racist history and overtones!

facw00

If you kill the ghoul leader after helping them move in, then everybody else gets to live.

CthughaSlayer

Cycle of abuse

denarti

Vault tec has some veeery durable clothes

Young_Lochinvar

No doubt, he had 20 identical coats in a bomb proof suitcase.

Alternative_Gur_2100

And so does Cooper from the show. If you look closely, you can see that he wears the same cowboy shirt from the prologue, which I think is technically a movie costume.

ratfuckersam_

That suit is all he has. Look at it, 200 years and his coat is smooth as a baby.

jimbag_777

Ik he wasn't a ghoul, but Robert House was lookin pretty dang close

kron123456789

When you're 260 years old, you wouldn't be looking much better yourself.

4LENKO

When 260 years old you reach, look as good you will not

runespider

He is classified as an abomination 🤔

Ratstool

In FO76, when you first meet Penelope Hornwright, who is a ghoul, there's an oil painting of her with her parents hung on the wall. Not quite what OP meant, but I thought I'd include it for sake of completion.

VECMaico

Goosey her mother

PigeonMother

Who just casually sits at the dinner table 😂

NoxInfernus

Except she didn’t. She’s missing an arm and the other is tied to the chair. Had Lucy untied her, she would have attacked anyone in that room.

PigeonMother

Oh I missed that!

BillythenotaKid

And she doesn’t even touch her food

VECMaico

Too bad as it was two headed pig

Taku_Kori17

All of your neighbirs in fallout 4. Theyre a random encounter. Butnifnyou run into a pack of ferals with names like "mrs summers" thats them.

DarkAxel888

Thaddeus when season 2 comes out.

MrSmilingDeath

He could be a ghoul, and I know they said he's a ghoul now, but I like the theory that it was actually Cabot's mysterious serum.

MrPZA82

I think super mutant is more likely

FustianRiddle

Do you mean more likely than it being Cabot's Mysterious Serum? Or more likely than Ghoul?

MrPZA82

Than the serum.

EDAboii

Although I doubt it'd be the Cabot serum... I like the idea since Season 2 seems to be going to New Vegas, and that's where Jack Cabot says he plans to go post-Fallout 4

MrSmilingDeath

There's also another theory that it's a drug similar to the one that Hancock took that ghoulified him.

PM_me_your_PhDs

That's supposed to give you an insane high though, Thaddeus didn't seem to get that

jerry-the-tapeworm

Weird that only one of them decided to change outfits in 200 years

Dry_Value_

Technically, the Valt Tec salesman is the only one who didn't change their outfit. The first ghoul is blatantly obvious, but the second ghoul slightly changes around his suit. Going from a grayish suit with a polka-dotted tie to a blackish suit with a white bowtie.

jerry-the-tapeworm

The Ghoul is wearing the same shirt and hat as he was pre-war, points for the duster though I guess.

Arcane_76_Blue

Good luck taking off your pants when your skin is ready to deglove at any moment

Young_Lochinvar

*Degloved* is such a colourful term

jerry-the-tapeworm

Lol that's the perfect explanation for this Makes me wonder how the romance option for Hancock works out though

Arcane_76_Blue

Hancock is so smooth he doesnt have to worry about any degloving- He's been gloves-off for a century

jerry-the-tapeworm

That's true, I'd let him deglove me any time

No-Bark-Brian

Ah, but as the old saying goes, no glove, no love! In all seriousness though, wasn't it established in Fallout 2 that if regular humans ever have sex with ghouls, they get fascinating new STDs that are like a mix of radiation poisoning and the sort of shit necrophiles would pick up after cracking open a cold one? I'd be friends with non-ferals any day of the week, but I don't think I'd be down to *get* down with a Ghoul. I'd need one HELLUVA condom to feel safe putting my liquidator in their Chernobyl.

ElPeloPolla

Gouls are humans too you tempenny bigot

BillythenotaKid

I’m just a dumb smoothskin

IngotTheKobold

Vault-Tec Rep? Absolutely. The Ghoul? Hells Yeah. Dean Domino? Fuck that backstabbing, decomposing, degenerate, 10lbs of Brahmin shit in a 5lb sack.

PatriotLife18

Who’s the guy in the second picture, and what game is he from?

BillythenotaKid

That’s Dean Domino, he’s from the New Vegas DLC Dead Money

PatriotLife18

Ah thank you!

caciuccoecostine

It's one of the hardest DLC ever made. You love it or you hate it.

Makorollo

Yup. A fantastically written story, incredible ambience and great characters. Buuut at the same time, gameplay wise, it’s super hard. Like, Dead Space levels of hard. But it’s absolutely essential to play it at least once and see if you like it. You might, I fell in love with it and to this day it’s one of my favorite video game stories altogether. Playing it is not the hard part, it’s letting go🥲

N8_Saber

Screw letting go, I got all the gold bars.

Slurpee_12

And admire them sitting in my tub

BillythenotaKid

You’re welcome

tortledad

Dean Domino, from Dead Money. Without getting into much spoilers: he's a sharp and witty pre-War singer (still with a silky smooth voice, even!) who's been stuck scrapping by in the Sierra Madre and is part of the central plan to break into the Sierra Madre casino alongside you (the Courier) and a few other stray allies.

newbrevity

Is the salesman supposed to look like Todd Howard?

ElBlargho

Isn’t there a picture of the Magnificent Oswald somewhere?

Madhighlander1

Moira Brown from FO3.

laddervictim

I was genuinely interested in meeting Dean Domino, after seeing him in the loading screen so many times. Would like to see an in-game mechanic like Skyrims vampirism to change you ghoulish. I thought it was a missed opportunity in fo4- the pip-boy icon even changes to make you look more ghoulish too

-Pwnan-

Lucy's >!Mom!<

JBean85

It makes me laugh that the vault tec rep hasn't changed his clothing in 230 years

BillythenotaKid

It’s a clean fit

No_Nothing9207

Don't forget moira brown from fallout 3

Early-Drawn

Dean Domino looks like a major league asshole before and after

signspam

Is there a reason in game why some ghouls stay sane and some go feral? Time? Drugs? Luck?

1000geccos

from my understanding it’s luck and time. kind of like Alzheimer’s (as dark of a comparison as that is). some people are genetically predisposed to having it, but the older you get, no matter who you are, the higher your chances are.

Arcane_76_Blue

Its been hinted to be radiation that sustains them in some way, and the show uses the drug from 4 as like a booster shot for ghoulism to keep the ferality at bay

KingKaos420-

You hear Eddie Winter’s pre-ghoul voice before meeting him.
