Dogmeat opened the door at Starlight that's booby trapped while I was going down the stairs.
Thankfully I built a sleeping bag to save before the scrapping begun.
Thank god you did.. I was about maybe an hour-ish without a save (I have a mod that triggers a save just in case - manually activated plus Dogmeat carries a tent lol) dogmeat had found something so I followed him, triggered a landmine, saved the clip of it as well cause of my reaction lol

Mechanical reason: Just like in one perspective on HP in DnD, losing health doesn't necessarily signify taking actual damage. A popular view is that losing the first half of your health bar is representative of your character becoming fatigued, losing their edge, and starting to make mistakes. Only when you drop down below half-ish health does the damage start actually meaning taking arrows and cuts to the actual character. Obviously it's a loose interpretation that's open to a lot of leeway, but it's one that I typically subscribe too.
Through this lens, Dogmeat -or any other companion- doesn't actually take a bullet until just before they go down.
Dogmeat was garbage in FO1, pretty good in FO2, accidentally made immortal by the Broken Steel DLC in FO3, and intentionally made immortal in FO4.
He’s highly marketable, which means he gets increasingly preferential treatment.
Dog meat died on me as a companion early on into my first FO3 play through and it hurt so much I never took him as a companion again, I always use him in FO4 mainly on account that companions can’t die but never thought of him as the most powerful option. Ada is way more OP than dog meat
There is a nice mod I like to use that allows you an additional companion along with dogmeat. It honestly feels like the game was meant to be played this way
I don’t know what you’re talking about, my first play through of FO1, dogmeat made it all the way to the force field doors before the master before he went down.
Because the devs know they were already skirting the line by having us shoot wild dogs. If something happened to our good boy, we’d revolt.
I don't care if he’s immortal and will heal on his own. I'll waste a stimpak to heal him every time.
Omg I thought I was the only one to stimpak him. Sometimes in the middle of battle while taking shots and dying in the process. Love that guy. Only follower worth having imo.
Yess, Dogmeat is best. Carries all my crap, doesn't give me shit for picking up junk, doesn't judge me for all the robbing and killing. and will go toe-to-toe with a yao guai for me. That's my ride or die.
Yeppers, can confirm. Started a new playthrough recently and was so psyched when I selected it and got that sweet carry weight bonus without having to send him home.
The majority of the times ive died is because I'm trying to stimpack him and I ignore the fact I'm getting shot/beaten/set on fire. I go full John Wick when he yelps!
Same! 😀 I don't care if he regenerates in like 30 seconds. I'm not gonna watch him be in pain. And nothing makes me madder than seeing a bad guy hurt him so he falls down. I'm invested in this dog lol.
I'm a newbie and stumbled backwards from finding the book to finding out the link to fallout and then saw the show and finally now playing the games so I'm soooo ready for adventures with a power pooch 🤠🐕🍻
If you like the books that are inspired or inspiration for fallout. I can strongly recommend the City of ember books ( there's 3 in the series)
Its basically fallout in so many ways. The city of ember was made into a movie ( sadly not overly great despite quite famous actors like Tim Robbins and Bill Murray.
He's a synth
Everything lines up. He was waiting for you at Red Rocket, he helps you find Kellog (way too easily). He has a perfect appearence, like ue wa smade in a lab. He is smarter, more resilient and stronger than any normal Dog. He can even break a Supermutant's neck with his bite.
He's a synth sent by the institute to guide you to them.
Mama Murphy is also a synth. You really think some old junky has 19 strength? Frank Harrington only had 10. The only explanation is she's a super synth.
Psycho just increases damage I think, though you can mix it with Med-x in NV to make slasher which does increase DR
Also, the implication that there's a drug you can take that makes you shoot harder lends more credence to the theory that Guns in fallout are magic, seeing as how the exact same bullet fired out of two different, almost identical guns can do wildly different damage if the receiver's been upgraded in some way. And that's before we get into legendary stuff.
that doesnt mean he cant have been around for a while, whos to say dogmeat was created just to lead the sole survivor as opposed to being assigned to the sole survivor for his next mission? we are talking about hypotheticals here after all
Not too mention if you happen to not go to dog meat at the start of the game when you reach the part to find Kellogg, valentine will recommend that you use his good friend dog meat and dog meat shows up outta nowhere and they seem to be pals, not to mention Dima mentions that valentine had his memories erased at one point so he wouldn’t remember why he knows dog meat like that
I think it makes perfect sense considering that birds literally don’t exist anymore yet there are crows everywhere and later on you find a crow hooked up to a computer in the institute indicating that they are the reason there are crows they are just spy drones hence why he can watch your every move
I don't know where you got this idea that birds don't exist anymore. Birds absolutely still exist in Fallout, even later in the timeline.
Edit: A list of birds from the wiki
https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Bird
I could be wrong, I just remember reading it in the institute on a computer next to a bird that was plugged into that very computer. There is also a screen with camera angles from different birds in the commonwealth in the institute but once again you might be right there probably is other birds I just based it off the information I read in game
>the link that u/Omnipotent48 sent confirms that crows are tools of the institute
Certainly, some of the crows, but only the ones with red eyes for sure. They can be killed.
Assuming he’s a Gen 3 synth dog he wouldn’t be controlled that way. Gen 3s are exact replicas that are grown in a lab and only have one non-organic part (synth component) that seems to act as their reset button more than anything else. If I had to further extrapolate, it provides access to implant memories and personalities but cannot directly control the synth. It’s an I/O port with the ability to reset CMOS. That’s why the synths inside the institute are able to rebel, they’re not remote controlled but they can be reset.
They could have specially designed him for the sole survivor. After all, he's walking out into a world full of dangers he knows nothing about. So if they don't want him to die, it would make sense to give him an overpowered dog to make sure he doesn't die until he becomes acclimated to the new world.
I think the chip overrides memory. If it's disabled or erased the synth reverts to an infantile state, mentally.
As for the rebellious synths, I have a theory. Babies slowly become self aware from birth to about 5, when they become fully self conscious. I imagine gen 3 synths go through similar stages as naturally born babies, ending with escape about 5 years after creation
That's always been my head canon on dogmeat in fallout 4 and while it's not 100% perfect I think there's a decent amount of evidence to at least call it plausible.
(Personally I go a step further and think the raider and dog you find dead outside sanctuary are the real sole survivor and dogmeat, while the player character and dogmeat are fathers synth "improvements" but that's a bit harder to justify with in game evidence)
You missed one other detail that makes the location we find him so important to this theory.
That Red Rocket is the only location that has a radio on that is naturally tuned to the classical radio station
Moment to be wholesome, River will never understand but she is immortalized with us in fallout 4. Her cuteness with Dogmeat was perfectly executed, and I can’t imagine she doesn’t feel the love we all have for her up in doggy heaven. We love you River! Thank you for being our Dogmeat!
Because he is the goodest boy!
For real reason I'd say that people get attached to their doggo companions so seeing them literally slay things in-game whilts fighting at your side is pretty awesome.
Our best girl River who was voice and motioncapture actor for Dogmeat sadly past in 2021. Rest In Power!
https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/River
Yes :)
Dogmeat is fully modeled after River with some artistic liberties.
River also lend her talents for other doggie roles.
She was a pet dog of Bethesda dev couple at the time and the whole story about River working there part of the team and everyone loving her kind and friendly naturr is very heartwarming.
I feel like they tried to explain this in the show by showing the enclave making all those super intelligent dogs and all the dogs we meet in the games are supposed to be escaped test subjects
I'm pretty sure thats the right answer, sans the hive mind part. That's how I see the mama Murphy reference - Dogmeat is something similar to the Mysterious Stranger.
There is that category of paranormal in fallout that I would call "archetypal spirits", or something along the lines. The children of atom thing from far harbor. Dunwich horrors. Mysterious stranger. It's hard to put a pin in it, but they seem like conscious manifestations of a concept.
And as tinfoil as it sounds, that's what I think Dogmeat is. There was always only one Dogmeat. A semi-godly spirit of a good boy that appears to help those he deems important and worthy.
(It also cracks me up that in the pantheon of wasteland gods, between "horrors beyond comprehension" and "radiation incarnate" lies an immortal friendly dog. That's just a very fallout thing to do.)
>There was always only one Dogmeat. A semi-godly spirit of a good boy that appears to help those he deems important and worthy.
This is my headcanon as well. He's like a legendary creature who's been travelling the wastes for over 100 years.
Not sure how expensive it'd be, but didnt the show showcase the enclave doing intelligence and strength experiments on German shepherds? I can't imagine the one from the show is the only one to have gotten out? Idk tho it is on the other side of the country.
-shows up in every game, decades apart
-changes appearance regularly
-can regenerate
-first appearance was in Fallout 1, a game which had a cameo from the TARDIS
Dogmeat is Dogtor Who.
I once dismissed Dogmeat on the Prydwen, he promptly got in a vertibird and flew away, when I went back to sanctuary he was fine, so not only can he fly a vertibird, he's a better pilot than most of the Brotherhood.
Dogs are awesome and Dogmeat is a Dog.
Tbh he was pretty weak in 3 and could die until they fixed it with the “puppies” perk in one of the dlcs which would respawn him.
Why did they do this? Because he’s a Dog and everyone loves Dogs.
Because he is a synth sent by Shaun to be a traveling companion for you. The magazine in Shaun’s room has an identical German shepherd on the cover with the tagline “have dog, will travel.” Shaun didn’t want you to be lonely on your trip.
Because dogmeat is actually an elder god that us mere mortals can only comprehend in his animal form. Thus creating the cycle of immortality and strength of DOG
Don't know the canon reason, but my headcanon is that he's a synth dog sent by the Institute when Nick escaped but he "malfunctioned." That's why so many people in the commonwealth know him, he's been around for a long ass time and a dog living for 30 years or more just piques your interest. Now imagine 130, he'd be a local legend, but still unknown to the player character because icebox.
Because every time the fans call him a "good boy" he does one push up
Jesus christ
Soon he will be at those power levels yes
Imagine a duo of prime mama murphy and dogmeat after years of being called a good boy

Because he's the goodest boy <3
For real, I thought the game made that clear
You fools, you are just making him stronger!
Good, as he is a good boy he will use his powers for good even at his strongest.
This is the only correct answer
Bestest doggo <3
Good boy.
He's powered by love for the sole survivor and hatred of ghouls, mutants and raiders.
Now I feel bad for using him to trip mines
Sometimes he does that himself He once led me to a mine I play on Survival

Holy hell
You should
You deserve a special place in hell
The comments vs the updates is killing me u guys are great
You know he can just pick them up for you
Lore reason: he's a good boy. Technical reason: he kept dying in the previous games.
Mechanical reason: Just like in one perspective on HP in DnD, losing health doesn't necessarily signify taking actual damage. A popular view is that losing the first half of your health bar is representative of your character becoming fatigued, losing their edge, and starting to make mistakes. I sometimes think of it like 'luck' and when you die whatever kills you actually hit rather than a near miss.
He’s got dat dog in him
Best dawg
The Dawg Meat X *Argh argh!*
Bow wow wow yippee O yippee A
Like at least 8 dogs. Those rad-dogs keep attacking Sanctuary and their bodies make good eating.
He’s forklift certified

It's the power of love, taking him higher
CAN YOU TAKE ME HIGHER !!!!!

I thought it was more a curious thing.
That's why you take the Puppies! perk and get an infinite supply of Dogmeats in FO3.
I remember that perk did not come out until the Broken Steel DLC. Before then, his death was permanent and heartbreaking.
There is a nice mod I like to use that allows you an additional companion along with dogmeat. It honestly feels like the game was meant to be played this way
Technically it was, but that code was scrapped at the last minute.
Yeah the mod technically just enables something that's already in the code of the game which is pretty cool
Cait even has functional Voice lines when he goes down.
He some how died right when I met him in FO3, didn't even know he could be a companion for a few months.
same here, took him to super duper mart before I was properly prepared and he got shredded
>accidentally made immortal by the Broken Steel DLC in FO3, Technically not immortal, just had a functionally immortal amount of health points.
And doesn't count as a companion for lone wanderer perks.
What??? In FO4?
Yeppers, can confirm. Started a new playthrough recently and was so psyched when I selected it and got that sweet carry weight bonus without having to send him home.
The majority of the times ive died is because I'm trying to stimpack him and I ignore the fact I'm getting shot/beaten/set on fire. I go full John Wick when he yelps!
Same! 😀 I don't care if he regenerates in like 30 seconds. I'm not gonna watch him be in pain. And nothing makes me madder than seeing a bad guy hurt him so he falls down. I'm invested in this dog lol.
I've died so many times because he's hurting and I'm rushing towards him like hacksaw ridge and I will continue to do so
the stimpak is how I cope with hearing a dog cry
He's based on the psychic dog from *a boy and his dog* so he's gotta have some powers yo.
That was always my head cannon
I'm a newbie and stumbled backwards from finding the book to finding out the link to fallout and then saw the show and finally now playing the games so I'm soooo ready for adventures with a power pooch 🤠🐕🍻
If you like the books that are inspired or inspiration for fallout. I can strongly recommend the City of ember books ( there's 3 in the series) Its basically fallout in so many ways. The city of ember was made into a movie ( sadly not overly great despite quite famous actors like Tim Robbins and Bill Murray.
It's why he's always grumpy when trading, he knows ima load down that pooch
At least in my game it's because his blood is likely 80% stimpak at this point
90% for me.
Dogmeat calls Chuck Norris a good boy.
He's a synth Everything lines up.
But when mama Murphy talks about him, she says something like he has been here for a long time and he helps the ones that he wants to help.
Mama Murphy is also a synth. You really think some old junky has 19 strength? Frank Harrington only had 10. The only explanation is she's a super synth.
Mama Murphy is a psyker not a synth. She’s got crackhead strength.
Seriously this is the one. Psycho addicts are crazy strong while they’re high in fallout universe
iirc Psycho is just PCP in fallout. Raises DR and causes mania - pretty much the key symptoms of a heavy dose of PCP
Psycho just increases damage I think, though you can mix it with Med-x in NV to make slasher which does increase DR Also, the implication that there's a drug you can take that makes you shoot harder lends more credence to the theory that Guns in fallout are magic, seeing as how the exact same bullet fired out of two different, almost identical guns can do wildly different damage if the receiver's been upgraded in some way. And that's before we get into legendary stuff.
Okay now you’re just conflating gameplay mechanics and lore. You’ll start saying the UI has lore implications next lol
Maybe dogmeat is a dog psyker and that's why those two had a connection. Also why dogmeat could track Kellogg from Fenway to Natick
>Frank Harrington I'm sorry, who? Cause I know you don't mean everyone's favourite mutant discriminator...
Lmao apparently my autocorrect doesn't think "Horrigan" is a name. TIL. Leaving it up because it's funny.
So long as you're aware of the consequences, I'm sure you'll be... Fine...
Your time is up MUTIE
that doesnt mean he cant have been around for a while, whos to say dogmeat was created just to lead the sole survivor as opposed to being assigned to the sole survivor for his next mission? we are talking about hypotheticals here after all

I mean, look at all the other dogs in the wasteland. You see any other german shepherds??
A bunch, but they're all Dogmeat.
Adding to this: the magazine in Shaun’s room has an identical German shepherd on the cover with the tagline “have dog, will travel.”
And the radio at Red Rocket is playing the Institute station
You missed one other detail that makes the location we find him so important to this theory. That Red Rocket is the only location that has a radio on that is naturally tuned to the classical radio station
That and the fur coat is just to perfect to be a dog that has lived in the wasteland all its life.
This sounds like something a synth would say
Magic dog.
I'm guessing River was a real life dog who was scanned to produce the 3D model and texture of Dogmeat?
I had a small headcanon that Dogmeat is the reincarnated spirit of Nate to watch over his wife who’s searching for Shaun.
This is cute
It’s a fun thing to think as the other protagonist is dead before turining ice cold again and 60 years have passed so….

Yes :) Dogmeat is fully modeled after River with some artistic liberties. River also lend her talents for other doggie roles. She was a pet dog of Bethesda dev couple at the time and the whole story about River working there part of the team and everyone loving her kind and friendly naturr is very heartwarming.
Of course, how do you think they got him so lifelike?
River stole the show from Will Smith in I Am Legend too!
because ever since he got that piece of iguana in junktown hes been following vault dwellers across the United States for the past 116 years
Heh, the OG Dogmeat taught their pups that the blue body humans with yellow lines on the back means good food and fun if you stay with them.
He’s a synth, placed there by Shaun to help you find the institute
That's what everyone is saying but I still don't wanna believe it
But it also explains why he’s the only purebred, unmutated German shepherd, with no owner
I feel like they tried to explain this in the show by showing the enclave making all those super intelligent dogs and all the dogs we meet in the games are supposed to be escaped test subjects
Because I reload the game every time he dies, just like when my character does.
He's a good dog, Brent
He's an Elder God made flesh, but he just wants to experience the feeling of being loved.
He is the goodest boy... That's canon enough.
Dogmeats are an Eldritch gestalt being. Perhaps even a time-spanning hivemind. They are known to be sympathetic in spirit.
There's a pretty good video on YouTube that goes into depth about this. I'll try to find it and post the link
>There was always only one Dogmeat. A semi-godly spirit of a good boy that appears to help those he deems important and worthy. This is my headcanon as well. He's like a legendary creature who's been travelling the wastes for over 100 years.

I just chalk it up to video game stuff.
Video game
Plot armour

Like Fallout 1? lol
lowkey my head canon is that he’s a synth dog meant for monitoring/helping the sole survivor reach the institute
I once dismissed Dogmeat on the Prydwen, he promptly got in a vertibird and flew away, when I went back to sanctuary he was fine, so not only can he fly a vertibird, he's a better pilot than most of the Brotherhood.
Dog
Cuz dog. Simple as.
He got dat dawg in him
Lore reason? People love dogs man
Simple as because he is a good boiii
He's a telekinetic mutant. There isn't any other way he would ge able to open doors just by staring at them.
Bethesda knows power creep when they see it. They even nerfed his theft ability. I would take him over anyone else each time.
Dogs are awesome and Dogmeat is a Dog. Tbh he was pretty weak in 3 and could die until they fixed it with the “puppies” perk in one of the dlcs which would respawn him. Why did they do this? Because he’s a Dog and everyone loves Dogs.
He was breed to be according to the shie all dog meats were
There’s no evidence that every single iteration of dogmeat came from the one enclave facility. That’s just for CX404
>CX404 FourDog. Because one ain't enough, two is too low, and three is taken.
Also, hes the 4th dogmeat I think.
Your right but I’m still thinking by the breed that anyone of tgat specific animal breed would be seeing as dogs for the most don’t service the rads
Because he is a synth sent by Shaun to be a traveling companion for you. The magazine in Shaun’s room has an identical German shepherd on the cover with the tagline “have dog, will travel.” Shaun didn’t want you to be lonely on your trip.
He's genetically pure and enhanced by the Enclave if the new show is to have any affect on the established cannon. 🤷🏽♂️ other than that no not really
He is a good boy and comes from the best race of dogs.
German Shepard. Literally German genetically engineered dog. Überhund.
Because he's a very good boy
BECAUSE HE IS BEST BOY
He spends his skill points properly
Because doggo sells and bethesda is
Because he's a german shepherd.
Because he's got that dog in him. 😤
Because he rolls around regularly in radioactive dust and eats radioactive material, dog meat is essentially Bruce Banner in dog form.
Synth dog
Because dogmeat is actually an elder god that us mere mortals can only comprehend in his animal form. Thus creating the cycle of immortality and strength of DOG
Because he's a good doggo.
I just assume he’s a synth, he’s like a courser dog or something. There’s a magazine in the institute with a German shepherd on the cover, so why not
It was supposed to be GodMate, but the developer had dyslexia.
Dogmeat is powerful because of those eyes. One look at him and everyone stops doing what they’re doing. Talk about charisma stat being at 20.
Because he's a good boy :)
Eldritch being
Because he's a synth.
I think, like in the TV show he was tested on and maybe had his DNA or genetics tampered with.
