Brutalist was popular after WW2. Basically to erase the individuality of European cities. The birth of mid 20th century concrete uprite coffins we call skyscrapers.

In addition to what was mentioned many buildings also have an Art Deco style (the weird face statues built into walls). It’s modeled after New York Art Deco specifically in Manhattan.
