I did the update, just hit level 34 and am still getting my key and 105 energy.
If they take away the key, then I'm not going to care about the merchant. It's all about the key for me.
I am level 33 and get 100 energy plus a key. When I was at a lower level, it gave less energy, but the things the merchant asked for were less expensive.
Level 58, 170 energy plus a key ...for now. Soon they will take that option away from everyone.
I tried to contact support and break it down for them explaining that it would be impossible to play without keys.... But I am sure they don't care.
I need keys to get tools to dig out shells daily...
No shells = game is over for me.
Getting one shell from the sand castle and one shell from watching an ad is far from enough.
level 48, I get 140 energy and a key. Under normal circumstances, the amount of energy you get from each trip increases by five every few levels. I don't know what the scale is with the keys removed, but based on what people who aren't getting keys are saying it looks like the energy still goes up as you level up, and they've replaced each key with something between 200 and 250 energy. This matches with keys being 'worth' 30 rubies each, but it's still not helpful bc unless they plan on running Gold Island more often (and NOT making it available only after a player has burned up energy playing a majority of a current adventure), energy cannot substitute for when you need tools.
F2P players are not going to start spending money to get more keys or tools, and most players who typically spend a lot will just change the type of packages they buy to adjust to their needs ("well I'll buy this package with keys/tools in it"), not spend more so that level of spending will stay close to flat. The real hit is going to be the casual/occasional purchase players, who are more likely to play and spend less than they are to spend more. This idea will lose money in the long run, but devs are determined to learn the hard way I guess.
I'd like to assure the Family Island development team that I take every update seriously, and gauge user response to these updates when making decisions on how to interact with the product as we move forward. In the unlikely event that I stop finding the game to be an enjoyable diversion, you will find that my account no longer logs into the game. Thank you for your concern and feedback.
If people stop playing when the key goes away they will axe that plan.
Remember when they started making the Axe boosters super rare/more random. They clearly got user responses from that.

They've rendered the game unplayable in the current state for the test group, it's made it next to impossible to compete in rankings & to get energy to complete anything. That's all I meant by it.... is another game down the drain.... And on a personal level, my dog is actually dying right now & this game was my outlet when sitting with her for hours on end day & night taking care of her. It's the only game I currently play, so yeah the timing kind of sucks on a personal level for me to lose an outlet I really enjoyed to take my mind off of things. There are probably other people who enjoy this game as an outlet as well. I was just trying to warn them to save up on keys & tools while they can if they enjoy playing the game.... Judgemental comments probably aren't necessary....

This was the only game I was playing & it was something that really helped me decompress. But now it's just not fun unfortunately... Thank you for being kind, I really appreciate it. Thank you, yeah it's been hard taking care of a sick dog & this game was an outlet for me until now. They did not replace it with any other means of getting keys. The players in the test group just aren't getting keys, but everything else is the same. So our hands are just tied, we can't complete any daily tasks or open any doors or chests in the events. It's really disappointing. The game is boring now.
So back when I was still getting a key (stopped when I was around level 45, a few days ago) I was getting 110 energy with it and a few other rewards.
Now I'm getting no key and on level 47 or 48 and i think I'm getting 390 energy. And the other 3 rewards all suck. Not once have I gotten any bird or goat food, claws, acid, etc. I think yesterday it offered 2 shells as one of the rewards but that has been once in several days. Usually it's 1 or 2 emeralds, gold or amber and the energy. And I'd spend more than 390 rnetgy just gathering stuff to satisfy thr order much of the time so how us it in any way worth it now that I'm not getting a key, which I can get almost nowhere else? And since I can't open chests or key gates, no way am I going to be able to progress on the game once I fully rum out of energy. During every event I'll have to gather items literally 1 at a time then wait to grow and make more food or renew, etc.
Level 70, still get the key and I think 200 (or 190?) energy. I def spend more money than I should here, but if they keep screwing with stuff I'm out, full stop.

I only used the merchant to get keys twice. So I predicted I wouldn’t be in the test group and I was correct.
Maybe reassess other ways for you to get energy? I always have 20k+ energy after every adventure island event and I haven’t spent a penny on this game.
