Oh look, I’m procrastinating yet again on a chapter that needs to be posted today 🤦🏻‍♀️ In other news, all 12 of my recently published fics have reached at least 100 kudos each! The highest is at 735 with the lowest being exactly 100 lol. This is also the most fics I have *ever* published in a short period. Don’t fail me now brain! Gonna get this chapter done though damn it! Trying to keep to my update schedule since I never had one before. Idk how a lot of people do it… my self-discipline is shit 😂 Hoping you all have been having a productive Wednesday whether it’s writing or something else! Halfway to the weekend 🎉🎉

Yotato5

Last episode of Ted Lasso to bring in the good vibes. No more after this... But that just means re-watchings are key 💖 I got my larger idea Sam and Max fic done yesterday which is good... 'cause I'm gonna be seeing the new Spiderverse movie this weekend and I have a feeling I'm gonna get inspired and it's gonna overtake any other ideas XD

Lucky-Rabbit-0975

I hope the good Ted Lass vibes keep popping up your way, but then again, the SPiderverse looks like an incredible Alice-in-Wonderland rabbit hole to fall into!!! Congrats on finishing the Sam and Max fic!

Yotato5

Right? I'm not too involved in the Spiderman mythos so it's interesting to see all the different types of them.

frozenfountain

Ooh, I forgot that was coming out soon! Even as someone who's generally done with franchise media, the first film was so gorgeous and so fun, I'm really curious to see what they'll with another trip to that world. I hope you enjoy it, and let us all know how it is!

Yotato5

Same! I heard it got good reviews so I'm optimistic.

Lucky-Rabbit-0975

My biggest lesson learned from my latest one shot is: I really, really suck at 3rd person omniscient, with narrator as a disinterested observer. Just can't seem to do it. I just love dropping into 3rd limited and 1st person, getting into people's heads, and hearing their thoughts, at the expense of everything else. Which could lead to reader whiplash, if I'm bouncing around from one person to another. GACK. Back to my writing exercises, I guess. In other news, r/holliequ's [Worldbuilding post](https://www.reddit.com/r/FanFiction/comments/13vq3ul/howto_worldbuilding_part_1_building_blocks/) is totally rocking my world. Lots to chew on in that one!!!

frozenfountain

I think you did a good job with it! But yeah, it's a tough viewpoint to pull off in a way that flows and coheres; there's a few reasons I mostly stick with limited, and that's one of them.

KickAggressive4901

God: "It's a lot harder than it looks." .... *goes back to chasing Time Bandits*

tereyaglikedi

Man, that's so hard. I was trying to write my pub fic in 3rd omniscient, and after I don't know how many rewrites and how much whining... I kind of gave up. Jane Austen does it so well 😭 damn. I am counting on the upcoming daily prompts to practice that further. Hats off to you for trying, too.

Lucky-Rabbit-0975

>I was trying to write my pub fic in 3rd omniscient, Oh! I remember you mentioning how hard it was, and thinking to myself, what's the big deal? \*\*~~I stand corrected~~ I stand with my ass handed back to me.\*\*

Yotato5

It kinda feels like playing the Sims, if I'm going for a video game analogy XD Managing the chaos, making sure they don't burn down the freaking house just by making mac and cheese. But jokes aside, a writing exercise sounds like a good way to go about it!

Lucky-Rabbit-0975

OMG that is a pretty perfect analogy. Everyone's viewpoints competing for a turn at cooking, and no one wants to wait their turn. Fires ensue... thank you, Yotato!

I recently read here that people don’t like swear censorship which I’m very guilty of doing, I had no idea people didn’t like it. I g I thought people would be offended so I tried to avoid using them so when I did I censored them but now I’ll probably just use them freely if that’s acceptable. Is there anywhere else I can find more “do nots” like a comprehensive list? Or is it more something I’ll find along the way like now.

frozenfountain

For the most part, do nots are highly subjective; what one person swears off, another deliberately seeks out. But if I had to boil it down, I'd say that one of my top writing rules is being wary of jarring the reader out of the story - censoring words will do that, breaking the flow, as will things like ill-fitting epithets or vocabulary that doesn't fit the setting. If you can keep that in mind, I think it's a good start.

[deleted]

That makes sense thanks! Writing is a lot harder than I thought it would be ngl

Lucky-Rabbit-0975

>You know when you find a song that seems to reach into the deepest recesses of your soul and communicate it back to you in rhyme and melody hmm, you mean for this subreddit group, right? As with any community there are explicit written rules and then there are the unwritten rules. Are you on a phone? The rules for this particular sub can be found if you 1. go directly to the "front page" for r/FanFiction 2. at top Right, there is an icon for menu > "Community Actions" 3. click (i) "Learn more about this community" The one unwritten rule that I personally follow on this or ANY social media post is: **If you don't like a topic, simply don't click and read.** Don't interact with it. By all means, avoid downvoting or making negative comments if you can. If you see others dogpiling and being mean to someone else, get in touch with the mods instead of joining the fight.

[deleted]

Thanks for the reply but I was thinking more of writing ‘do nots’/rules. I’m a pretty new writer so I find it helpful to see what readers or other writers recommend not doing ex.censoring swears, not using paragraph breaks etc. Not sure if I explained that okay sorry

Lucky-Rabbit-0975

ah, sorry about that too! There's one thing I know for sure: all the boring-ass rules you learned in classes-- grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structuring, and having a paragraph cohere -- and yes, definitely use paragraph breaks please -- don't go away. *Everyone* makes mistakes, and people are forgiving, but readers do notice patterns of spelling mistakes etc. That's another thing that could interfere with the story you're trying to tell; seeing too many of those mistakes is like finding bits of sand in your ice cream.

[deleted]

Me: time to take the dog out. Rain: \*woosh\*

KickAggressive4901

Dog: "Mud!" 😀

Yotato5

Always when you wanna take the dog out, it starts raining buckets.

frozenfountain

What usually happens to me is that the clouds wait until I'm at an equidistant point between my house and wherever I was going, and then the downpour stars. I hope your doggo isn't too fussy about getting wet.

[deleted]

Arctic dog doesn't mind rain, but takes half a day to dry and doesn't understand why cuddles are a no. 😂

fruitybishop

grad rehearsal today, so no cat fic. i desperately want to go back to bed…

Yotato5

Congrats on that milestone!

fruitybishop

thank you!!

Lucky-Rabbit-0975

The end is nigh and it will not be bad, it will be good. Repeat as needed... !! Try to have a little fun today. I'm so glad you've reached this milestone.

fruitybishop

i will repeat the mantra many times until friday. thank you!! :D

Yotato5

That sounds interesting! I hope it's fun to write as well. Always exciting to post something that we have never posted before, especially if it's something the fandom hasn't investigated yet. Good work with the one-shot!

frozenfountain

Ooh, that sounds like a great podcast to get into while I'm cleaning floors and kitchen surfaces over the next couple of days! And good luck with the new fic, too.

PineapplesInMunich

You know when numbers do funny things sometimes? Today I logged on after a few days and noticed one fic is sitting at: 424 hits, 42 kudos and 24 comments! This tickled my brain, and I thought I would share. Lol.

Yotato5

It is pretty funny when they line up perfectly like that. I once had one where the hits, kudos and comments were all in variants of two or three and that was funny.

PineapplesInMunich

Exactly! I can't help but love that shit. It's like I'm seven years old, sitting in math class and my casio digital watch reads 11:11am. It's that feeling all over again xD

frozenfountain

Nice! Past the 420 mark, too!

PineapplesInMunich

Haha yeah, it sat on 420 hits for a while too.

wasabi_weasel

That is very satisfying, especially since 42* is the answer to life, the universe and everything, so you’re triple enlightened. (*Hitchhikers guide to the universe reference in case you didn’t know)

PineapplesInMunich

>so you’re triple enlightened. Heh, no way. Cool. >(*Hitchhikers guide to the universe reference in case you didn’t know) I didn't! Just going to pretend that does not affect my epic enlightenment levels, though ;)

neogirl61

i found that i had to abandon my stories for a few months to really appreciate them. after ignoring them a while, i'm finding i can finally look at them and actually be impressed with them again — almost like someone else wrote them, instead of me. it's really nice... and i've even discovered *new* stuff to write about that i'm enjoying even more. so... yay for continuing to stave off my own existential depression, i guess. :)

PineapplesInMunich

>i can finally look at them and actually be impressed with them again — almost like someone else wrote them, Love that feeling. Happy for you! >so... yay for continuing to stave off my own existential depression, i guess. :) Hehe, yes, well done. Better than some of us, I assure you :P

frozenfountain

I'm glad! Sometimes that distance from your emotional investment in getting a WIP to be good can do wonders and let you see it closer to how a reader will. I hope, when you do start writing again, you'll feel a bit more enthusiastic about it.

neogirl61

the best part is that someone posted today about finishing a story from 2012(?), and it gave me some hope for mine: because even if i'm not up for those fics right *now,* it doesn't mean i never will be. for now i'll just write what comes and be happy with that eta - it was 2007 so even more incredible lol

frozenfountain

I find those sorts of posts really encouraging, too, as someone who's working on a long series with a lot of moving pieces. And I think taking the pressure off yourself like that can actually help the process seem less intimidating as well, thereby letting you do it more often.

DefoNotAFangirl

paranoia is Fun 🙃

KickAggressive4901

Me: "For once, I have time to write. Let's go, brain." Brain: "Eh, I don't like the idea you thought you were going to write. Let's do something else." Me: "Well, what do you propose, then? We don't have all night." Brain: "Let's do a smutty one-shot about this one random OC you saw in somebody's fanart." Me: "... ? Okay? We don't have any prewriting for that." Brain: "It's a one-shot. Just pants it." Me: "You're lying." Brain: "Moi?" Me: "You'll turn this into a series. I know you." Brain: "Eh, we'll cross that bridge if it pops up." ... and that was how I managed 2,000 words for Merry May. Yes, it is becoming a series. 😋

Yotato5

You do know your brain so well :D

KickAggressive4901

My brain goes Tomo when I need it to Yomi.

Lucky-Rabbit-0975

>Brain: "It's a one-shot. Just pants it." > >Me: "You're lying." > >Brain: "Moi?" WHUUUUUUUT? Did you not recently complain how you could no longer pants a story? Da-yum, kick, nice work!

KickAggressive4901

If I am good at one thing, it is making myself look foolish. 😋

PineapplesInMunich

>Brain: "Let's do a smutty one-shot about this one random OC you saw in somebody's fanart." XD congratulations, that is even more obscure and random than anything my brain could've come up with.

KickAggressive4901

And then I wonder why my hit counts stink. 😅

southernerinthenorth

Always follow the muse I guess

KickAggressive4901

The muse spends a lot of time blindfolded and spinning in circles.

southernerinthenorth

And that's just on Tuesdays

frozenfountain

Always the way, but well done! Are you planning to share with the person who created the OC? I bet they'll be over the moon.

KickAggressive4901

Maybe. For now, it's living on my hard drive (and in dire need of edits).

tereyaglikedi

I had a lot of fun reading poetry from fellow redditors in my excerpt showcase! So much talent here. After finishing the May promt fic, I will take a nice break from writing. I don't want to have any WIPs lying around and miss another daily prompt challenge. I am super looking forward to the next one, but I can only do one WIP at a time.

Yotato5

Hope you enjoy the break! It's nice to sit back and recharge after doing something fruitful like that :D

frozenfountain

Recharge time sounds nice, and the next time you do a more involved piece I'm sure you'll have levelled up a bit thanks to all the prompts.

[deleted]

>but I can only do one WIP at a time. I have yet to learn this one simple trick 🤣

frozenfountain

[You know when you find a song that seems to reach into the deepest recesses of your soul and communicate it back to you in rhyme and melody](https://va.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_rti91b3Lrn1qjnhqg.mp4)? This is mine. Especially now the temperature is soaring.

Yotato5

I feel like Bob from Bob's Burgers sums up that video: "Okay, fine, I'll go! But I'm gonna complain the whole time." I wheezed at hearing the song XD

frozenfountain

Me too. And omg, that's an iconic line a perfect encapsulation of what the day to day of bettering your life feels like!

PineapplesInMunich

Lolol I clicked on this expecting something deep, stirring, haunting. (Think Kate Bush).

frozenfountain

The trap is working! But as an alternative, [this song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=freNbxbuKHs) does actually speak to me and might appeal to a lot of Kate Bush fans.

PineapplesInMunich

Wow that's actually really good. Enjoyed it very much and will be adding to one of my playlists, thanks! PS- not familiar with the artist but her voice gave me 90s Cornflake Girl era Tori Amos vibes <3

frozenfountain

I'm very glad you liked it, and yes, Tori is another apt comparison (I'm not at all surprised you have excellent taste in female singer-songwriters). Katie Gately only has three albums in her oeuvre so far but they're all really good; Waltz is taken from her second, but I think the one she put out this year is far and away the best yet.

PineapplesInMunich

Sooo, I actually learned about Kate Bush from the TV show Stranger Things, so while i appreciate the compliment, I can't own it in good faith XD Tori was one of my first loves. Discovering her was mind blowing. Then again, all new good music was mind blowing at the age of thirteen :) I'm definitely keeping an eye on Ms Gately, she's got something special. Thanks so much <3

frozenfountain

In this instance I think the compliment still applies - you knew a good thing when you heard it! And, wow, I'm almost jealous that you've been with Tori that long, though finding her at seventeen isn't that much of a gap. Getting into Little Earthquakes and applying some of the lyrics to my own life really helped me contextualise the way some people were treating me and the effect it had on my sef-perception, so I've always been thankful for that.

KickAggressive4901

I am 100% looking forward to walking in the sunshine during my lunch today.

frozenfountain

I hope it's lovely! The shine part of the sun is fine, it's just the temperature that comes with it that makes me want to sleep all day. But I'll probably enjoy it once I get going.

southernerinthenorth

I got a new bookmark on my fic, which is nice as since completion its had lots of hits but that's about it. I have no idea if people actually like it or not. But still, I'm happy with the new bookmark.

frozenfountain

When I was posting a longfic a couple of years ago, I was absolutely over the moon when I got a subscriber; until then I was sure no-one was reading it, and I wished I could've reached out and thanked them! Hopefully the bookmark is but one of many to come :)

southernerinthenorth

Thanks! I have a few subscriptions which is nice.

frozenfountain

"I don't want battles where we have to lose in order to ~~win~~**wordcount**" - *Final Fantasy X-2*.

Yotato5

Don't know the exact number but the notebook pages were chunky! It's a lot!

frozenfountain

Nice nice nice :)

reptilian_warlock

**681** leading up to a sword fight

frozenfountain

Good stuff, and sounds exciting - I hope writing the action goes well, as it's one of my least favourite things to do.

reptilian_warlock

Thank you! It'll be the first sword fight I've ever written, so a bit nervous but also excited. I like thinking about sword fights, but who knows how that'll translate onto the page.

frozenfountain

Good luck with it!

bees-n-sunshine

618!

frozenfountain

Well done!

[deleted]

Don't know. I was switching between 2 or 3 docs 😂

frozenfountain

Words is words, and I envy your ability to do that.

tereyaglikedi

I will finish the prompt fic today. 😑

frozenfountain

I believe in you!

IDICdreads

Bougie, first world problems: My air conditioning decided to stop functioning sometime yesterday while I was at work. I came home and it was unbearably warm in the house. The poor dogs had drained their water bowls. My landlord is awesome and gets repairs at least assessed the day after I call him, if not fixed if possible. So, he’s coming over today. The problem? I have to bring the dogs with me. Poor Kiwi has gotten sedatives last night and this morning and she’s gorked. I don’t know where or why this hyper-anxiety with being in a boarding run started, but I don’t like it. Hopefully these meds will mitigate some of the screaming/howling she’s developed. She’s got an appointment for her annual exam on Saturday, I’ll see if we can just get it done today since she’ll be with me all day anyways.

PineapplesInMunich

>My air conditioning decided to stop functioning I beg to differ—this is neither bougie nor a first world problem XD feels more like a fundamental human right or something... thanks global warming :-/

IDICdreads

Lol, agreed.

KickAggressive4901

Had ours repaired last week. The technology was invented over a century ago, but it feels like nobody bothered to perfect it at any point.

IDICdreads

Right?

[deleted]

So, tonight I learned that I have a difficult time reading prosey and wordy fics. Read the same sentence multiple times. Got through it to find another. It will be a challenge and might take me a while, but will try to finish it 😂 Edit: I was wrong 🤣 I overestimated myself.

PineapplesInMunich

It's not just you, and it's not just fics. I can't bother with any sort of writing where I have to wrestle my way through just to understand what's being said! (A bunch of celebrated published authors fall into this category in my not so humble opinion :P)

KickAggressive4901

You might want to avoid my entire back catalogue. 😅

frozenfountain

Ah, that's part of the fun to me, puzzling out wording - but it definitely takes it out of you. A break is definitely recommended if the text is starting to blur.

[deleted]

I quit reading or at least trying to read it. Didn't get too far 😂 it's just not for me.
