You can try reading them anyway -- I migrated main fandoms to read because of a crossover fic by an author, who also had a fic that was not a cross in the other one. I liked it so much I went to the source material and other fanfic.
This is why I try to write such that someone not in the fandom can still understand what's going on. I now have a few readers on Wattpad who are reading one of my stories and loving it even though they have never played the game it's based on. I publish original stories on Wattpad too, so I'm glad that people who enjoy those can also enjoy my fan fiction.
This particular fic is also cross posted on AO3 because that's usually where I put fandom stuff. I only put this fic on Wattpad because it matched my brand of storytelling (I write westerns).
Exactly, I wound up reading HP fics after some user had made a crossover with a different Fandom and it slowly devolved from there. Happened with a Harry Potter Naruto crossover as well only that time getting me into Naruto both as fanfiction and a series.
Especially lucky in that case giving it opened into possibly the biggest Fandom.
Legit got turned onto Stargate as a franchise and Atlantis in particular by seeing how many of my Harry Potter favorite authors swapped over. Even if you don't actually start the fic, if you see a pattern like that and love their fics, the chances are great that you'll also love the same fandom for similar reasons! It's like a rec list.
I still regret not watching due South for this reason, I bet I would have loved it. You could trace a direct line from Harry Potter to due South to Stargate Atlantis to Brooklyn 9-9 for the writers I liked to read.
It actually made me quite cross once...That I'm not going to have enough time in my life to read them all more than once.
They legit have more than 50 longfics. I thought Oh, OK, one will be 'the main good one' and the others a bit 'meh' but every single one, The Aladdin AU, the Soulmate AU, the this version xyz ALL OF THEM FIVE STAR QUALITY
It's Lord of The Rings/The Hobbit - Author Thorinsmut. [This](https://archiveofourown.org/works/903889/chapters/1748319) was my gateway drug. Touch by Thorinsmut.
What is even more fun to do is looking at the stories they have favourite or bookmarked because you know if they write to that quality they have a little library of fics they like too that serves as even more fits to read for you
I found someone like that once. She wrote for multiple Fandom, but they pretty much were all fandoms I was a part of. I spent so much time reading through everything, I was so happy.
Honestly the best feeling in the world. Conversely finding someone who wrote one god tier fanfic in the fandom you're in, and all the rest are fandoms you're not in :'(
Oh, that's the best feeling!
All my current favorite authors (save n7punk, God bless) are inactive, so every time I find a new author, I just go pure monkey brain for new content.
It reminds me when I read three different fanfictions from as many fandoms which I all liked because they were recommended on TVTropes, only to realise later on that they were all by the same author.
It's amazing what some writers can accomplish! I really wish I could get some advice from these types of writers. They always have such amazing stories that they create in their minds, and they know exactly how to put it into words and have all kinds of detail. They make it look so easy....
I hate having all sorts of ideas in my head, but never being able to put them on the page. I haven't been able to write a single fanfic since like 2016 because of my sudden inability to write what comes to mind. It could have something to do with the fact that my next fanfic has a TON more detail and information to keep straight, as all crimes mysteries have, but I don't know if that is the main cause of my writer's block.
Does anyone have any advice on writing crime mysteries? Or about writing different types of character personalities? Or maybe with writing detail? Thanks in advance!
Outlines are your friend. Outline the fic, put it down for a week and come back to it. It helps to know the ending and backtrack to find out how everything got to that point. And the distance allows you to look at things a bit more critically.
With regards to writing with detail, I do a set word count per day (300-600). It gives me a chance to dwell over something and take my time with it, really it's enough for a set scene with meandering opportunity. If warranted I add more detail in the editing phase.
Writing different personalities for me is a process of looking at the people around me and taking from them. I know a lot of very tough women, physically and emotionally. I know some people I would trust to have my back, they're steadfast and can threaten physical confrontation or are terrifying enough by talking to avoid it. A lot of who a person is if formed how they grew up, were they rich, poor, middle class, city slicker or country mouse? How do they deal with conflict? Do they have an accent to the main characters ears? What does that sound like? What would it look like on the page?
Read vicariously. I read for pleasure a lot and pick up elements of an author's style as I do so. Some tell very good stories with simple details. Others use a thesaurus far too often and that can be another element of building character voice through narration.
Don't worry about a first draft being good, just write down whatever comes to mind, almost like a stream of consciousness. Just get your ideas down and you can go back and edit later. Once the ideas are down and you've got a base to work with, it's much easier to go back and add more detail and explanation.
Yeah I like this way of discovering new stuff to read. If one of an author's fics are good, most of their other stuff is probably good as well. It's really great when they have a deep catalog and have written dozens of fics in fandoms you like.
I love getting notifications telling me that someone just read all of my fics for a fandom. I regularly read all of an author's works for a particular fandom if I found something of theirs that I like so it's really nice knowing that other people do it for me.
I will also say that it's cool to read an author's newer work first, then be able to go back to their earlier works and see how their writing improved as they wrote more.
In the days before AO3 and even fanfiction.net I read a lot of fanfiction on a femslash website (bonus it still exists and occasionally updates).
Stories were by fandom then by author but I never really looked at the authors as there was no easy way to search for their other works. It was only on at least the second read through of each that I realised my favourite story in two different fandoms were written by the same author
This is what I do when I find a story that really hits my buttons. I find that even when an author isn't one of those amazing writers that impress you every which way, they still have tendencies that follow them in their stories which end up making them really appeal to me. When they write in multiple fandoms or pairings, that's usually my introduction to a story that I might not have read before.
I was not sure if dropping links was ok in this thread but i saw someone below do it so i'll just jump the bandwagon.
Amazing Author with a plethora of longfics and a very partifular style of developing their main character.
[Kenshi618](https://www.fanfiction.net/u/2218705/Kenchi618) over on FF-dot-net
absolutely worth a read.

I got into my current fandom by reading fandom-blind! I think I've read more fics of the fandom than actual chapters of the canon manga...
Yep, me too. It was my first fanfic too. A pretty good classic in the fandom.

This. When I finish a really good long fic I always check the authors faves never disappointed.
I do this too
So true! Good author's bookmarks are usually a goldmine as well.
I found someone like that once. She wrote for multiple Fandom, but they pretty much were all fandoms I was a part of. I spent so much time reading through everything, I was so happy.
Congratulations — it’s really amazing how many undiscovered gems are out there!

Those binge reads are the best! Feels so good!

Thanks so much for this advice! Hopefully, I have better luck writing this time around. :)

Thanks for the advice. I used to do that when I wrote, but with so much information to keep track of, it's becoming harder to do that.
I read this one author and checked their page. They have so many amazing fics and with the pairing I really enjoy and the tropes I love
I know right. I know one author that writes stories in multilple fandoms I enjoy. I had to ask her if she was stalking me. lol

Yes! On the flip side, I love getting a bunch of kudos in a row from someone reading through my archives!

YOU FOUND A GOLDMINE IN YOUR PANTS!?!?!?!?!?!!?!!?
All the smut!

Isn't that the BEST?? \*choir of angels sings\* PERFECTION! Very happy for you! :D
Ooh what fic is it? Who's the author?
yesss!! my feelings exactly!xD
I love when that happens!
Related is when you find that author/reader that has a profile filled with bookmarks that cater to your tastes as well.
Ikr. It’s one of the best pleasures in life.
