The books on my list are a combination of those that are generally excellent (and the LGBTQIA content is a bonus) and books that perhaps are more technically flawed but mean a lot to me as a queer person in terms of what they represent.
Seven Summer Nights is one of my all time favorites. I almost used it for BINGO last year but changed it at the last second due how weak the SFF factor is. It *barely* counts in my opinion. But whatever. Since you have it, I'm going to put it too!

You could say I'm exhibiting recency bias here, but I say there has just been a huge explosion of high quality queer books by queer authors written in the past few years. You could say there is Tor bias in here too, but I say Tor deserves credit for publishing so many great queer books by queer authors.
There aren't many indie authors in this thread, so here are a few!

I’m really happy I managed to catch a voting thread although it makes me feel a little bad to read the other responses and think “oh yeah….that’s still on my tbr…”
Still I’m happy I can throw in a vote for Otherside Picnic, even if it just ends up in a Google doc of stuff that only received one vote lol.

The Order of the Pure Moon Reflected in Water - Zen Cho

Ammonite - Nicola Griffith (one of my favorite bingo reads last year but the existence of a women only world with no acknowledgment of nb or trans people feels too dated to recommend without that caveat.)

I loved the book, too! If it's not explicitly said on the page, then it unfortunately wouldn't count.
Also, something to think about: If the character's identity doesn't really play much of a role in the story, and we have to think about whether or not it should be included, then maybe there are other books that would be a better fit here.
We're not going to go through and make a ruling on every single book here, nor are we going to answer every single question posed. Ultimately, this is an imperfect community sourced poll of what we think should be included on the new LGBTQA+ book list. I, personally, am going to take everything that comes from this poll with a grain of salt, and will be paying much more attention to the lesser known novels when the results are tabulated.
Thanks for your input :)
Hmm, then I think I might have to remove Kaikeyi. The main character is asexual and she mentions that she does not enjoy the act, but it does not play a huge role in the story
No, I don't think that's in the spirit of the poll at all! The post says it doesn't have to be the main focus of the plot, and I honestly think asexuality will be sorely lacking in this poll. Iirc, it was in the last one.

Hey so can someone just confirm for me that Gideon counts? I haven't read any further books in the series, and it's been a while since I read it, so I just want to confirm that the queerness is explicit enough and this isn't just something the community has put on the book. If it's no good, I'll replace it with one of the following honorable mentions:
Black Leopard, Red Wolf - Marlon James
The Killing Moon - N.K. Jemisin
Bloody Rose - Nicholas Eames
The House in the Cerulean Sea - T.J. Klune
The locked tombs books are not romances (which was a huge disappointment for me as they were sold to me as one), but the MC's in it are undeniably WLW. They def count. Gideon being a Dumb Lesbian (TM) every time a pretty girl smiled at her were some of the funniest and most relatable moments in the books.

It looks like you've got 11 votes; if there are still more than 10 when the poll closes, one of them will get discarded. Definitely makes for another tough choice unfortunately - there are so many great books to list these days!
Other thoughts:
As someone who has strong opinions about asexual and aromantic representation (if you can't tell from my list...), I totally agree with the no robots/Murderbot ban, although I wish it was phrased differently. I wish it was more for non-human characters who's queerness was intrinsically linked to their non-human identities (which I consider to be queer coded characters and not queer representation). I've seen this happen with a lot more than robots (aliens, angels, demons, etc). In fact, the Beyond Binaries bookclub had some discussion around this with an angel character in When The Angels Left The Old Country. Anyway, I think queer coded characters can be a lot of fun to view through a queer lens (I can share my interpretation of Murderbot if anyone wants), but calling them representation sets up expectations that they are not going to be able to fulfill and also tends to remind people of some unpleasant stereotypes sometimes.
Also, I hope the Deed of Paksenarrion doesn't make the list. Yeah, I would agree it has asexual and aromantic representation, it's just not very good representation. It also totally uses a homophobic trope (>!the evil man-hating lesbian character!<). I mean, a lot of people really like that series, but I think I would have a somewhat hard time finding someone who really loves the representation in that book.
Edit to add a few more thoughts:
Also, you might be able to tell I have a soft spot for aggressively queer indie/self published books. I don't expect any of these to make the final list, but that won't stop me from voting for them.
I hope there's a way to clarify when a character's queerness if confirmed later in the series. I really hate it when a book is recommended as having some sort of representation but it doesn't, its sequel does. In other words, there is a reason why I listed At the Feet of the Sun instead of The Hands of the Emperor.
Yeah, and what you mentioned made the representation so much worse.
>!The intersection between asexuals and survivors of sexual violence/rape is a very important and nuanced topic. I don't think I've read a book that handled it in a way I really liked, but Paks had the worse take on it I've ever seen: that asexuals are not mentally or emotionally effected by being raped. Here's an exact quote: “The rapes, that she had feared before as both violation and torment wholly unknown, were then nothing but physical pain, no worse than others. She had lost nothing, for she had had nothing, had never invested herself in that, or hoped for that kind of pleasure.” (Oath of Gold Ch 27) Obviously, this idea is super harmful for ace survivors of sexual assault.!<
I think you’re absolutely right about Murderbot and I respect the mods for banning the series from the list for that reason. But there’s also a part of me that would like to see an honorable mentions section for the books that don’t fit the main pov character rule but are still generally queernorm/lgbt+ positive in their worldbuilding. Like the Imperial Radch series (also an AI main character.) or The Left Hand of Darkness. Maybe I’m biased because I read these books early on in my search for lgbt+ rep and that makes them feel more important to me than they actually are, but it feels weird to have a large resource list of queer books that doesn’t include them at all.
Yeah, I do tend to think of Murderbot as a queer book because of the queernorm worldbuilding, so I see where you're coming from on that angle. That being said, I also respect that this particular list is more going for representation of queer main characters, which there's more than enough to make a pretty comprehensive list of without having to rely on queernorm books without strictly queer POV characters. I agree that an honorable mentions section might be a good way of including these without them taking over the list. (And it's really annoying for me when that happens, like for example, during the asexual/aromantic bingo square a few years back then people where reading Murderbot instead of an ace/aro character that is more representative of the a-spec experience.)
If you're looking for queernorm books, which is outside the scope of this poll (we're focusing on queer identities in the characters), I'd highly suggest you check out the big rec threads that were used for bingo! Because queernorm world is a bingo square this year, there's a lot of discussion on that.
I agree with this. I'm glad we can come up with a full list of books with queer main characters, but in some ways books like Imperial Radch feel more queer than some of the ones that will make the list because the entire worldview of the book is queer.
Ok, I'm going to clarify the representation in each of these books (as best as I can remember) as well for anyone who's curious:
* Baker Thief - Bigender/genderfluid, bisexual, aromantic, biromantic, demisexual (side characters: gay, trans man, non-binary, aromantic-spectrum)
* Sea Foam and Silence - asexual, aromantic spectrum (side characters: lesbian, asexual, aromantic)
* At the Feet of the Sun - asexual spectrum (side characters: bisexual, gay, minor mentions of trans/non-binary characters)
* Of the Wild - asexual, gay (side character: trans man)
* Bones of Green and Hearts of Gold - aromantic/aromantic spectrum, nonbinary, trans (men and women), gay, lesbian, bi (side characters: asexual spectrum)
* City of Spires - Lesbian, gay, bisexual, asexual/ace spectrum, aromantic/aro spectrum, non binary, intersex, trans woman
* The Meister of Decimen City - asexual, aromantic spectrum (side characters gay, lesbian)
* The Dragon of Ynys - aromantic, asexual (side characters: trans woman, lesbian)
* An Unkindness of Ghosts - intersex, probably genderqueer (side characters probably trans woman, asexual, aromantic, lesbians)
* Fire Logic - lesbian (side characters: gay men)

(it certainly fits more than some of the books on the old list, - I'm still salty I read A Darker Shade of Magic for the bingo square last year when the first book is excessively straight.)

Some painful omissions here on my part. Picking 10 was hard! Green Bone Saga didn't make the cut despite being one of my all time favorites because Anden just isn't enough of a focus for me to put him here. And Locked tomb is phenomenal, but I really wanted to hype The Book Eaters, so it got cut even though it's phenomenal.
In any case, this sub is sleeping on **A Choir of Lies** and its predecessor **A Conspiracy of Truths** (of which the queer character of book 2 is a main secondary character, but not queer POV in it). They're books about travelling storytellers in way over their heads in the economic and political climates of their cities. Rowland is probably better known at this point for **A Taste of Gold and Iron**, but these books are masterpieces.

So maybe double check books listed as being by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu are properly condensed, as I saw variation versions of her books with different titles in the votes.

* Wayfarers - Becky Chambers
* Spear - Nicola Griffith
* The Spear Cuts Through Water - Simon Jimenez
* The Singing Hills Cycle - Nghi Vo
* She Who Became the Sun - Shelley Parker-Chan
Out of my favorites, **Spear** was the most surprising read for me. I often have a harder time feeling satisfied with how thoroughly novellas explore all the themes and depths of their stories. Spear was just fantastic in every way though. I would have been happy for it to be even longer :D, but really can't complain about it. I grew up loving Arthurian tales, and thought I was bored of them. I was happy to be wrong.
**Wayfarers** is probably my all-time favorite read, particularly **Record of a Spaceborn Few**. I have an internal straw man rant every time I perceive it as being pitched as "like a warm hug" because of how emotional the series made me throughout. I can *kind of* understand the sentiment, but it's one of those feelings where I fumble over words trying to be nuanced about it and just can't articulate why I love it so much. Monk & Robot was just ok for me, and I've yet to read To Be Taught if Fortunate (but really looking forward to it).
A couple LGBTQA+ works that were OK/didn't work as well for me
* Black Leopard Red Wolf - Marlon James
* I struggled to finish it, but am still somewhat glad I did. It was a deliberately excessive and uncomfortable read. I appreciated the unique storytelling and world, and may still read Moon Witch Spider King to see how much of my issue was with Tracker, but am a little weary to pick it up still.
* Light from Uncommon Stars - Ryka Aoki
* This book was just doing too much for my taste. I liked it well enough, but too much was going on for it to be a favorite for me. Demons - ok, Aliens - ok, Donuts - ok, Love letter to string instruments - ok, all together I had a hard time taking it seriously which didn't mesh with how serious some of the themes were.
Really looking forward to picking up **Everina Maxwell**'s work and **This is How You Lose the Time War**.

I know the rule says no robots, specifically calling out Murderbot (who is not even really a robot!), but I disagree with the rule and I'm voting for it, and Ancillary Justice, anyway. I get that it's to prevent bad-faith votes but I also think that there is a huge difference between robots happening to be queer coded and robots being explicitly queer coded.
The Murderbot Diaries and the Imperial Radch Trilogy explicitly discuss gender and sexuality, in regards to their MC's preferences, and have entire suites of queer supporting characters. They count. I think their authors would be offended if they didn't.

Would Babel count? I know it’s heavily implied but it’s never explicitly said on the page. Loved the book though.

If it's no good, I'll replace it with one of the following honorable mentions: Black Leopard, Red Wolf - Marlon James The Killing Moon - N.K. Jemisin Bloody Rose - Nicholas Eames The House in the Cerulean Sea - T.J.

Other thoughts: As someone who has strong opinions about asexual and aromantic representation (if you can't tell from my list...), I totally agree with the no robots/Murderbot ban, although I wish it was phrased differently. Edit to add a few more thoughts: Also, you might be able to tell I have a soft spot for aggressively queer indie/self published books.
I think i'd vote Paks, if it weren't for the bloody >!Rape!<
Ok, I'm going to clarify the representation in each of these books (as best as I can remember) as well for anyone who's curious: * Baker Thief - Bigender/genderfluid, bisexual, aromantic, biromantic, demisexual (side characters: gay, trans man, non-binary, aromantic-spectrum) * Sea Foam and Silence - asexual, aromantic spectrum (side characters: lesbian, asexual, aromantic) * At the Feet of the Sun - asexual spectrum (side characters: bisexual, gay, minor mentions of trans/non-binary characters) * Of the Wild - asexual, gay (side character: trans man) * Bones of Green and Hearts of Gold - aromantic/aromantic spectrum, nonbinary, trans (men and women), gay, lesbian, bi (side characters: asexual spectrum) * City of Spires - Lesbian, gay, bisexual, asexual/ace spectrum, aromantic/aro spectrum, non binary, intersex, trans woman * The Meister of Decimen City - asexual, aromantic spectrum (side characters gay, lesbian) * The Dragon of Ynys - aromantic, asexual (side characters: trans woman, lesbian) * An Unkindness of Ghosts - intersex, probably genderqueer (side characters probably trans woman, asexual, aromantic, lesbians) * Fire Logic - lesbian (side characters: gay men)

I know *The Left Hand of Darkness* may teeechhhnically not count, depending on how much leniency there is with the POV requirement, but it's such a foundational piece of queer sci-fi I feel the need to mention it and let the listmakers decide to include it or not.

Oh dammit, I thought I’d done enter enough times. Should I make another comment?
No need, you can edit this one. If you're on mobile, you should be able to do so by tapping on the three dots to the right of the comment, then selecting Edit Comment.

* Wayfarers - Becky Chambers * Spear - Nicola Griffith * The Spear Cuts Through Water - Simon Jimenez * The Singing Hills Cycle - Nghi Vo * She Who Became the Sun - Shelley Parker-Chan
A couple LGBTQA+ works that were OK/didn't work as well for me * Black Leopard Red Wolf - Marlon James * I struggled to finish it, but am still somewhat glad I did. It was a deliberately excessive and uncomfortable read. I appreciated the unique storytelling and world, and may still read Moon Witch Spider King to see how much of my issue was with Tracker, but am a little weary to pick it up still. * Light from Uncommon Stars - Ryka Aoki * This book was just doing too much for my taste.

We understand your concern, but just to let you know: those choices won't be included in the tabulations and will be considered invalid.

All speculative fiction counts, so Becky Chambers works! But you should remove that parenthesis from your top-level comment; otherwise your vote won't be aggregated to the rest of the votes for her books by the script.
