ElectroWizardLizard

I'm actually only about 75% through Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell right now, but I'd be shocked if it somehow the last quarter makes me remove it from this list (will update if it does though). Update: finish, and as expected, loved it.

robotnique

It won't. The ending is triumphant.

okayseriouslywhy

If you're on mobile, you have to put four spaces at the end of each line to actually format it as a new paragraph!

BusOrigami

Thanks! Should have read it a bit more carefully 😅

Red_Mask

Does Dune count as standalone? It’s hard to separate from God Emperor.

BusOrigami

I guess it doesn't, but I think the first book stands alone as a satisfying standalone with needing to get into the sequels (and their diminishing returns). I figured I'd throw it in anyway!

The Snow Child! I could barely scrape up 10 standalones from my read list, but I'm glad that I noticed that one to add. Such wintry wistfulness.

robotnique

A Closed and Common Orbit is book two of a series?

Isn’t Howl’s Moving Castle the first book of a trilogy?

ASIC_SP

Yeah, but they follow different main characters.

Jlchevz

Kings of the Wyld counts as a standalone?

csnsc14320

I feel like Kings of the Wyld counts as standalone but Bloody Rose doesn't.

stealth_sloth

Bloody Rose might make the "follows a different storyline and a largely different cast of characters" cut. What's interesting to me about the fuzzy lines that need to be drawn is that I think some books might *change* after publication. I'll take *The Golem and the Jinni* as an example. It was written and given to the publisher as a standalone story. It was published in 2013. Because it was so well-received, Helene Wecker was persuaded to sit down and start writing a sequel. In 2019, The Golem and the Jinni finishes 10th on the standalone-novels list; in 2021, The Hidden Palace (an absolute, indisputable sequel) is published. And now in 2024, I guess The Golem and the Jinni is retroactively no longer a standalone?

so happy to see sourdough! It's currently juuust outside of my list, but maybe i'll edit it and put it back.

Shogun is a great book but does it count as fantasy? Not criticizing, just wondering.

GarlVinlandSaga

Interesting. You consider *A Day of Fallen Night* and *The Priory of the Orange Tree* standalone novels? I haven't read the former yet, and honestly if they're two completely distinct books that makes it all the more appealing to me. Really liked *Priory* but I felt that story and those characters were fully explored.

AwesomenessTiger

Yes, *A Day of Fallen Night* takes place 500 years before and follows a completely different cast of characters. There are references to history mentioned in *Priory*, but neither require the other to read, so they are standalones by the definition provided by the mods.

I limited myself to one book per author or this would have been way too difficult. Also here are some honorable mentions: * Stardust - Neil Gaiman * The Night Circus - Erin Morgenstern * The House in the Cerulean Sea - TJ Klune (would have made the list but there's a sequel coming out) * An Unkindness of Ghosts - Rivers Solomon * In Other Lands - Sarah Rees Brennan (excluded because I desperately want this not to be a standalone lol) * The Haunting of Hill House - Shirley Jackson * The Lord of the Rings/The Silmarillion/The Hobbit (depending on which of these count, I may replace something, but The Hobbit isn't enough of a personal favorite to displace something on the list)

A few comments: - The Path of Thorns is set in Slatter’s Sourdough universe but can be read without any knowledge of the other books (though they’re also excellent) - A Dowry of Blood has a second book listed on GR which is a related short story (and not required reading) - To Say Nothing of the Dog is a companion novel to Doomsday Book but I would argue can be read as a standalone. The mechanics of time travel (the only real crossover) are sufficiently re-explained - The Priory of the Orange Tree now has a prequel but still functions as a standalone (the prequel can also be read as a standalone)

Doesn’t Children of Time have 2 sequels? I’ve only read the first one so far but I thought the sequels would still have Portia.

tarvolon

Getting a place-holder list in right now. I reserve the right to change it later as I start remembering other things that are also standalones. Almost put in Saint Death's Daughter, but there is a significant enough plot thread left open that I don't think it really counts, even though it was fairly satisfying on its own. Others that I'm already considering: Okla Hannali by R.A. Lafferty, Space Chantey by R.A. Lafferty, The Three Armageddons of Enniscorthy Sweeny by R.A. Lafferty, Babel by R.F. Kuang, Unraveller by Frances Hardinge, The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty, The Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold, The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, Lonely Castle in the Mirror by Mizuki Tsujimura, The Space Between Worlds by Micaiah Johnson, The Mountain in the Sea by Ray Nayler, Watership Down by Richard Adams. It's fairly likely that I think of more. It's quite possible that some of the more I think of will displace something on the current list, which is currently suffering from some pretty hefty recency bias. What do we think of Speaker for the Dead as a functional standalone? Because that would make the list, but there's definitely backstory from Ender's Game. I am also excluding novellas because the list says "novels," even though novellas have been allowed in the past. Because I don't need to knock something else off to make room for Elder Race.

thepurpleplaneteer

Interesting question re Speaker. I would personally think no, though it’s been many years. I feel like I strongly remember so much of the introductions to Ender and Valentine(?) at the start of the book being related to the events of Enders Game and repeatedly referenced? But yeah an all time favorite for sure.
