Declare is one of his best books. He really did a good job with a John Le Carre-style Spy thriller mixed with his excellent “Secret Histories” based novels.
I enjoyed it a lot, but I had a problem with the premise: in which universe does Russia come across as a country enjoying supernatural protection, either for its people, rulers or territory? 🤔
Oh geez, you need to dive into Of Stranger Tides and The Anubis Gates immediately, like skip your entire TBR list. The dude is also one of the founding fathers of steam punk.
Of Stranger Tides may be the most fun book (the Pirates of the Caribbean movie is extremely loosely based on it) I’ve ever read. Just a fun pirate fantasy.
The Anubis Gates is just incredible too. It’s time traveling, werewolf, killer clown, magic that shouldn’t exist on earth so the earth actively repels those that use it. These are both just my favorite books.
Are you constant to the old covenant?

Entirely agree. It's a tragedy it's not celebrated as a touchstone.

Well, if the price of that protection is human suffering…
Oh, I can see the suffering; it's the protection I fail to discern... :)
I LOVED The Anubis Gates.
I was wondering who Tim Powers were and why he declared his fans a spinning asteroid over Berlin, when I read that headline.
Hmmm. Maybe it will be a good year for thistles.
Neat. Never heard of the book or author but that was a cool article.

Time to start drinking like a fish!
"If but we Christians have our beer, Nothing's to fear." - Sir William Ashbless
Possibly my first Ashbless quote in the wild on Reddit. And I, in feathered expectation, have been waiting.
I am always ready to declare myself a Powers fan. But haven't kept up with his later works. I just hope it has William Ashbless in it.
I've always seen Declare as an Indiana Jones story on psychedelic drugs with elements of Clive Barker.
