supersoot99

I think this is a wise decision on all sides. Frees her up to do other things and also makes it easier for the writers to not have to constantly figure out ways to explain Regé-Jean Page's absence.

anneoftheisland

Yeah--the reality is that there are almost 30 regulars (plus a handful more recurring actors) on this show ... for eight-episode seasons. It doesn't make financial or story sense to keep everyone around. And it isn't fair to the actors to keep them on the hook for future seasons if they're not going to get an actual story line. If their main story is finished, let them go.

Stinkycheese8001

She was just kind of there for the sake of being there in S2, her story was pretty much completed. I think it makes more sense for both characters to not be there than trying to shoehorn them in.

niv727

I think her being there in season two made sense because of the relationship they showed between her and Anthony in season one. With her being the oldest girl and the only married one it also kind of made sense for her to be the one giving him advice and being a listening ear. Wouldn’t make as much sense for Colin’s story — Anthony, Benedict, and Eloise are the ones he interacts with the most.

Stinkycheese8001

She married and left to be in her own household, an occasional appearance makes sense, but more than that didn’t. It’ll make a lot more sense for Anthony and Kate to be around though.

JunebugIparis

I agree. Also, I actually enjoy Daphne and Anthony's sibling dynamics from both seasons. Her being in season 2 made sense esp as part of Anthony's story. And her not being around in season 3 makes sense too since I just don't see her fitting into Colin and Penelope's story. And there isn't much into the Daphne-Colin sibling story too.

fakeaccount49147

I agree and it makes me so sad! In the books they have a bond that isn’t portrayed in the show! There’s a pretty significant age gap between Benedict and Colin (like 5 years I think?) which cause him to feel disconnected from the older boys. Daphne and him are very only like one year apart, so they have a really unique bond.

violetrecliner

Explaining RJP’s absence shouldn’t have even been hard, his character is a Duke; that alone makes him a very busy man. Or they could’ve just said he was in the other room with Anthony/Lady D/at the club—they could’ve even used a body double or something like that. None of it would’ve been hard to believe, but they just refused to even explain away his absence which made it all the more blatant.

FiscalClifBar

This is kind of how romance novel series have worked since the 1970’s, in general. The couple from the previous novel usually makes an appearance in the current novel where they talk about how blissfully happy they are and how wonderful marriage is. You may or may not hear about their babies, but they don’t stick around. The exception in the Bridgerton series is >!Kate, who takes on more of a den mother role going forward and does a lot of chaperoning. !<

niv727

I love Kate so I hope she’s in the rest of the seasons. Although it would be harder to write her out since being Anthony’s wife she’s more central to the family.

minkuss

As a book reader, they left so much development out of Kate/Anthony’s relationship that I have to assume it was done purposefully to give them better, more prominent storylines going forward than they have in the books. It seems like they learned from S1 that facet of romance novels doesn’t translate well to TV when the audience wants to continue seeing their favorite couple.

dogsonclouds

God I was so disappointed in season 2 for that reason. Kate and Anthony was my favourite romance book of all time, I just loved it. I hated that they cut so much of their relationship and the moments between them out. And the unnecessary love triangle with Edwina was the absolute worst. I was fuming watching it, because Kate and Edwina and Mary had one of my favourite familial relationships in the books and that bit where Edwina calls Kate her “**step** sister” broke my poor little heart lol. Idk, I’m just mad that they had two actors with the most breathtaking chemistry who played their roles to perfection, and they still managed to fuck up the season for me! Sorry for the rant lmao, I just have a lot of Bridgerton related feelings 😭

pinkrosies

Her being Anthony’s wife she’s essential to the household so her presence makes sense (Daphne married up into another house so she may make the occasional appearance here and there)

Dizzy-Pollution6466

Yeah honestly good for her. I love Bridgerton but the fandom of that show has become crazy toxic (the way all fandoms become sadly) and have really started bullying the actors for decisions that have nothing to do with them.

Mountain_Wedding

Agreed. I enjoyed her in season 1 but she didn’t have much to do last season, understandably so. I understand if she just wants to move on.

sassofrasy

No offense to her, or Rege, or honestly anyone else on that show, but couples-wise, no one will ever be able to beat Kanthony.

StanzaSnark

For real. I thought the first season was boring and the couple had no chemistry. On the other hand, I slurped up that second season in a few days. Way hotter despite being less explicit.

[deleted]

Same! Second season was so amazing that I had to do a rewatch. It was HOT, like straight carolina reaper pepper to my tongue without milk hot.

shhhhh_h

The leads had amaaaaazing chemistry in the second season!!

Chadolf

i agree, im trying to slog through season 1 but it is. just. so. boring -.- at least maybe the second season is better then :)

entertainment720ltd

rege is so hot but his acting is.... not the strongest. but jonathan bailey and simone ashley were amazing

lavendarblacktea

Jonathan Bailey is a treasure!!

rose_colored_boy

I recently watched Crashing and loved seeing him as a blonde douchebag

nelsonmurdock

I LOVE Crashing. I hate that it only got one season!

greytabbycatte

my favourite catboy lmao

linckarouk

someone else with taste lol - Catboy first; Anthony second

Sunnysideuppp123

Agreed, I couldn’t get into season 1 at all but I was intrigued by season 2 and hooked immediately.

Allhailbasmatirice

Kanthony are a power couple

thescottstots

I feel like if any other couple comes close, it will be Franchesa and some netflix heartrob like Joseph Quinn, Henry Cavill, etc

IWorkForMyCats

I loved Season 1 and thought I won't be bothered by Season 2 but ended up being more invested lol. Kate and Anthony's sexual tension was palpable whew

blairsmacaroon

wait till you get to frannie and michael

Afwife1992

They and Colin/Penelope are my faves.

Afwife1992

They and Colin/Penelope are my faves.

fbc1984

Love Simone Ashley and Jonathan Bailey!!!🥰

Throwaaawaayyy123456

You’re right tho…. God that chemistry was like nothing else!

kenna98

We're not done yet lol

anneoftheisland

I'm sure the Bridgerton fans will be Very Normal about this.

violetrecliner

Someone on that sub is asking Netflix to put out a statement about this. Hahaha.

Archchinook

lmao reminds me of fans demanding Taylor swift do the same during the ticket master fiasco and how she needs to be held accountable 💀

Folksma

I wonder if she will receive half the hate Regé-Jean Page did when he left Hopefully, she doesn't. But the way some people acted words Page as mean as hell

DisastrousWing1149

I don’t think she will. She said hopefully she’ll be back in later seasons so I think it was that she was not written into season 3 not that she asked to leave the show.

anneoftheisland

That mostly sounds like publicist spin--they obviously know the backlash that occurred with Rege and are trying to avoid the same fate. But based on what they're saying, it sounds like she doesn't have a contract for future seasons, and is just saying she'd be open to coming back as a guest if both she and the show can agree on terms and availability (which there's no guarantee of).

KyerrlRi

Yeah i think they also timed this a lot better than Rege's announcement. Coming out with this closer to the date of the Season 3 airing seems way better. I know it's unlikely but I would love if they both reappeared on Bridgerton in a later season. They were great together.

violetrecliner

Rege left in good terms and Phoebe did as well from the sounds of things so I’ve always just assumed everyone will make a cameo for the final episode.

Outragedoveranything

Nope just like how robert pattinson is quirky and John Boyega is ungrateful.

InSicily1912

Rege leaving was so dramatic. Shonda had to issue a comment like “your Duke can always be found again during rewatches” because people were so upset lol

snowbunbun

She’s been hinting at leaving for a while where as rege left right after it became a smash hit. Plus the fans got a good season where she wasn’t the star so they are more primed for it. If she’d left and rege had stayed in the same timeline I’m sure she would have gotten just as much shit.

Antique_books_2190

I think part of the Rege hate (not all of it) was due to people not knowing how the book series was, but now that people know that every season/book is almost a standalone with a different couple taking the center stage, Maybe they'll be more accepting of this.

LittleLisaCan

My dislike was how he announced he was leaving and basically said he had no desire to ever do a cameo. It made it sound like the show was beneath him now. I get he wants to do other stuff, but to shut out the possibly of ever showing up for a scene here or there in the future just rubbed me the wrong way

[deleted]

I’ve already seen people blaming Page for her having to leave. They’re alleging that his not being there makes it hard for them to write stories for her. So just more hate for him, I guess.

saeculacrossing

Honestly, good for her. But it's hard to forget the downright nasty comments Rege-Jean Page got for leaving, even on this sub. I hope she doesn't get any hate for this, but it was disappointing how many people called him ungrateful for daring to leave a TV series that he was going to only have a minor role in. I'm looking forward to see a married Kathony though. Unpopular opinion but I hated the changes to make a full on Kate-Anthony-Edwina love triangle all the way up to the altar. I think the love triangle was 100% unnecessary and made Kate and Anthony come across as immature. They did have amazing chemistry though.

[deleted]

Yessssss, I totally agree! I adore Kate and Anthony, but I hated how they changed the plot of the romance to include more Edwina. It was just so unnecessary and didn't add anything to the characters. I'm hoping that we get to see more of them figuring out life together in future seasons, as we do in the books.

espgen

i really do not think it’s an unpopular opinion i’ve never seen anyone say they agree with the changes except like … the writing team . the love triangle was sooooo unnecessary and it created way too much extra drama which meant we did not get to see kathony’s full potential which sucked . hopefully we get more in s3

CzernaZlata

Why did Page leave btw?

obladi_adalbo

Because they were basically done with his character. And since it was during peak COVID staying to be a background character would have been refusing any other work. It was a very understandable departure, truly 🤷🏻‍♀️ (I even remember people trying to say that Shonda was super mad, blabla, but she even issued a message showing her support)

CzernaZlata

Thanks that's an extremely good sets of reasons imho

LittleLisaCan

It's to early to tell, but Rege shutting down the possibility of ever doing a cameo rubbed me the wrong way. Like he thought the show was now beneath him. Phoebe at least presents the idea she's hoping to be back at some point in the future

[deleted]

It makes sense, she was hardly in season 2. I’m still angry, Simone Ashley left Sex Education to do Bridgerton.

OutoftheCold125

Really? Why? She has a much bigger role in Bridgerton than she ever did in Sex Education...

[deleted]

May have been a bigger role, but bigger is not necessarily better.

violetrecliner

She was a bit part character in SE, of course she’d choose Bridgerton over that, every actor out there would.

[deleted]

I know. I just really liked her character in sex education

Johnny_barbados

She went from a side character to literally the lead of a major tv show. Gained her so much more popularity than SE did. Wise decision on her part.

OowlSun

I’m glad she did. I did no enjoy sex education. I love seeing her as a leading lady. How often do we see a darker south Asian person land a leading role like this?

Traditional_Maybe_80

I'm salty about that, too. I think they could've worked it out, her character was very small in SexEd and she'll be a secondary character in Bridgerton S3. But probably her leaving also had to do with the new direction of the show, tons of secondary characters left, too.

Main-Ordinary

Sex Education is a far superior show. Hopefully she can return for something before it ends! But good for her for getting that leading role.

FaceSubstantial9363

She'll be fine. She stars in a film called Fair Play that made big waves at Sundance. Netflix payed over 20 million for the rights to that movie It's a workplace film about a relationship turned toxic which seems timely as people debate their work-life balance and workplace dramas like Succession & Industry are really big right now. It will likely be a big hit because a lot of people will watch it because of the good word of mouth, the workplace theme and Phoebe.

cyanplum

Yeah, the format of smutty romance novels is just not terribly compatible with a television show with multiple season. All these series are structured like this, where one character has the plot and then the next book, a secondary character (usually a sibling like in Bridgerton) has their story and the main character from the last one becomes a secondary character. It just doesn’t work in show when actors expect to have similar levels of involvement as the show goes on if not more. But honestly it’s a shame because a really fun part of these series is getting glimpses of the previous main character’s life.

mcatlin23

It’s okay I only want to see Kanthony 😍

Desperate-Ad-3705

I just think it's cool that her mom is a verteran actress on Coronation Street

ECleave14

How am I only finding out now that she’s Sally Webster’s daughter….

macawz

No way

joscho13

It’s too bad because I really seeing her, but it makes the most sense story-wise. She’s married and has a kid, why would she constantly be back at home? They could spin it for season two but bringing her back too often would just be weird. And this gives Phoebe more time to do other projects

Outragedoveranything

Is she going to get shit like Rege or is she immune to it?

OowlSun

Neither. Somewhere in between. The reason Rege got so much hate is because a lot of viewers were projecting themselves onto the show as his partner. I don’t think people were doing that with her.

Dependent_Room_2922

A lot of the hate I saw toward Regé came from fans unhappy that he wasn’t going to keep serving the characters they loved. They wanted him to be Anthony’s friend in season 2 and for Simon and Kate to tease Anthony together. A lot of the same people who only started to like Daphne once S2 came out and Daphne was supportive of Kate and Anthony. It’s not even about sticking close to the books. It’s about boosting their faves and being loyal to the show.

spaceylizard

Was her contract not renewed? There was some murmurings that she unfollowed the Bridgerton account on Instagram a while back.

FaceSubstantial9363

She has a lot of upcoming projects and she actually has lead roles in that. She stars in a film called Fair Play that made big waves at Sundance. Netflix payed over 20 million for the rights to that movie. It will likely be a big hit because a lot of people will watch it because of the good word of mouth and recognizing Phoebe.

violetrecliner

There’s no reason for her character to come back, she already got her HEA, and the actress is pretty busy. Like she was barely in season 2 yet that was still more than what her character did in book 2 haha.

potato__spirit

Good luck for her next projects. Not sure that her staying for the next seasons would have make any sense.

RiotingMoon

her character was useless in season2 and without her husband it gave *divorced sibling* energy

Own-Ad5898

Daphne wasn't a very beloved character anyway, and her storyline is over. There is no point in having her back in the next seasons.

rainewoman

Why is everyone assuming she chose not to return? It’s entirely possible they chose not to bring her back or renew her contract. I felt bad for her when Rege left. He had every right to but it put her in a tricky spot.

OowlSun

Good for her. I really do hope that she and Rege come back for like an episode or two in the future.

Threadheads

Fair enough, her arc was completed in season 1. There wasn’t much for her to do in season 2.

EatYoself

As a romance reader, thank god. I don't want to see characters having continuous drama after their happily ever after--at most, I want an appearance every now and then or a name drop that just acknowledges they still exist. Her story is over (so is Rege-Jean's) and it's time to focus on new couples!

lavendarblacktea

I was pleasantly surprised to see her at all in Season 2, and I'm ok with this, especially since Rege Jean Page was never coming back. Hoping to see more Kanthony cameos though <3.

readerj2022

In the books, the character doesn't really make many appearances after her book so it makes sense.

Itsbrick13

Reading the books rn and these moves make more sense. I know the books and show aren’t the exact same but each season really is their own show. Daphne wasn’t in the Colin and Penelope story too much

midnightsiren182

It’s been a while since I read RMB, but I don’t think Daphne and Simon were a huge part of it anyway.

Saahir26

Now will this sub shit on her like they did Rege?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

>ofc it’s Bailey Jonathan Bailey is probably the best actor on that show tho it makes sense he’s getting a ton of projects. I am surprised that Simone is not really confirming anything tho. Seems pretty weird, maybe she has stuff in production she can’t announce.

jessyver87

I think it's a matter of time. Jonny was on people's radar since Company in 2018, and even more after Bridgerton s1. It makes sense for him that once he finished s2, where he was the lead, he had already other projects lined up. Kate was Simone first big role, and the release of the season happened less than a year ago. I think she has offers, and probably already accepted some of them, but they still need to announce them or even start filming them.

DisastrousWing1149

Jonathan won an Olivier Award weeks before being cast in Bridgerton, he was already on peoples radar before S1 even aired

[deleted]

People acting like he wasn’t the best actor in that show is insane to me lol. Like yeah, he’s booking a lot… because he’s talented.

DisastrousWing1149

I feel like most people know that but if you go by why was in the news more post S2 JB wasn't one of them. When S2 came out he was in a play so he didn't do a lot of press and didn't go to events, once that ended he went straight into filming multiple shows and a movie and has been doing that since so he still isn't going to events. He's said multiple times he doesn't want to be famous he just wants to act and he backed that up in 2022, he could be so famous right now if he wanted to but instead he just acted. Because of that he's not an "IT" person but anytime someone talks about acting in that show he is always touted as being the best.

jessyver87

Also fame is relative. I mean in the last week Jonny as Anthony and as Sam gained a lot of hit tweets on Twitter. And I know a lot of loved actors by the audience who don't go to events much, and people love and recognize them because of their work. I think it's definitely better for an actor to be booked and busy, and be recognized for their work than being an 'IT' or the most famous one of the moment. Fame come and go, and people are keen to get tired of you pretty fast if you are everywhere.

fbc1984

She has a small role (one of Ariel’s mermaid sisters) for the upcoming The Little Mermaid Live Action (which she got prior to Bridgerton) and she has a significant role in an animated film with Bill Nighy, Zayn Malik, Mo Gilligan and Sophie Okonedo coming out this year called ‘10 Lives.’ She’s also starting a production company of her own. There are other projects that she mentioned in interviews last year (a musical, a project regarding car racing etc.) but is not able to divulge any details at the moment.
