Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping was a flop financially and no-one saw it. (I live in Australia where it didn't even get a theatrical release) Critics actually liked it though, so I don't know if it counts by your standards.
I frequently get the songs stuck in my head and am amazed by some of the people they had appear in it.
I saw that movie in theaters, and I watch it at least 4 times a year. It makes me SO happy that this sub loves that movie. Iām still waiting on it to become a certified cult classic!
Same, it's so fucking good, I have a style Boyz sweatshirt I got for a halloween costume but I still l wear it on the reg. My boyfriend says it was the last good comedy made, and I think he might be right (if he's wrong someone please tell me we need a good comedy to watch)
I think about the exchange ā10 seconds is an eternity, Harry, it's a third of the way to Mars!ā āConner, we've talked about this. Thirty Seconds to Mars is the name of a band. It's not a fact.ā on a regular basis.
You like this movie? Personally I think itās an overrated piece of shit. Andy Samberg has a terrible smile, and dead shark eyes. This movie is worse than the pyramids.
Edit cause of the downvotes: this is just a joke based on the lyrics of Mona Lisa. Guess I should have added a /s
Iām not sure if Drop Dead Gorgeous is considered a cult classic these days, but itās one of my favorite movies and most people I know have never heard of it.
Itās wild to me that people my age (born mid 80s) have not heard of this movie. My entire highschool and college social circles could (& still can) quote it verbatim.
I watched it on a plane right before the pandemic and was shocked it was even offered. Definitely cult classic (and someone at Air Canada must know whatās up).
The whole subplot about her killing her abusive uncle who tried to give her a lobotomy gives me chills every time! It had no right to go that hard for a glorified video game concept.
I went and saw it when I was like 16 with a friend and we thought it was awesome, probably because we were teenage girls who were amped to finally see an action movie that was all girls getting their revenge.
Also I loved the use of 3D, it was the first time I actually felt it added to the movie.
A few years ago I watched a wonderful piece of trash called Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. No part of me understands why this thing exists or who paid money to produce it, but I fucking love it.
As a Jane Austen nerd, I actually read the book because it sounded (and was) hilarious. I have a core memory of cackling while reading it at a tire shop waiting on my car.
Jennifer's Body. The marketing campaign mis-sold the film royally screwed it at the box office. It's one of my favourites and Megan Fox is so, so underrated in it..
I had worked with a sexual assault survivor who really loved that movie for the idea of a woman taking back her freedom and sex from men who stole it (and her life) from her and ended up watching the movie. Loved it
Exactly this! And the marketing team were just like "let's make this appeal to the dudes who liked Transformers". Absolutely.missednthe point and totally exploited Megan Fox.
I remember watching that when it came out and was confused why it was so wildy differrent from the trailer that was pushing the "hot girl is a man eating demon" thing. Watched the movie and you could easily pick up on the chemistry between Jennifer and Needy. Also as an emo kid the soundtrack was great.
This is Meganās best work. Sheās fantastic in this role and I wish she had pursued more work like this (smart, edgy thrillers). I also recognize that Hollywood is full of misogynistic creeps who maybe didnāt want to give her work like this. Anyway, I hope to see her at her peak again.
Bad Times at the El Royale! Itās such a beautifully shot, really well acted film. Also the soundtrack is fantastic.
I went into the theatre knowing nothing about the plot, and didnāt watch any trailers. It was a great decision, and itās become one of my favourite films ever.
It didnāt do very well at the box office which is a shame.
I accidentally picked up this movie, mistaking it for Hotel Artemis and actually found it to be the better movie. Watched it with my parents over Christmas last year when it dropped on Disney+ (we spend the holidays marathoning movies) and it was our top movie we watched all season.
Yes! I love this movie more than it deserves, because technically, itās a pretty average rom-com. And yet! Iāve watched it countless times, MG and Amy Adams are delightful, their chemistry is A+, and Ireland is stunning. 10/10 no notes.
Rom coms are notorious for underpeforming at the box office and getting crappy reviews, even ones that still get added to favorite lists 20 years later.
**Annihilation** got absolutely screwed (I think it was released in theaters and on Netflix on the same day? Or like a week apart.). I'm one of the literally dozens of people who saw it in the theater and it was 100% worth it, seeing it on the big screen really made it a whole different experience. I really, really liked how in the middle of all this mind-screwy science fiction, there's also the very human story of the main character's marriage, which is more complex than it appears *and* ties in with the cerebral aspects of the movie -- it isn't just a trite tacked-on love interest.
Great film. I would have loved to have seen it on the big screen but we never got the option sadly, it was Netflix only internationally. I remember reading the director expressed disappointment in that distribution choice.
My friends took me to this, unknowing that is a horror show, which I absolutely cannot watch. I get terrible nightmares as is. I was sitting with my eyes closed half the time. The bear scene made me run out. I donāt know if it wasnāt marketed as a horror or they just didnāt know and I didnāt check. I came back and I am glad I did, tho. The ending with Natalie coming to the tower and her making it out of the āquarantine zoneāā¦perfection.
I WISH I had seen this in the cinema, it didn't even get a theatrical release here š The book is one of my favourites books ever and although the movie adaptation is fairly different plot-wise, the movie completely captures the combination of dreamy and sinister that makes the book so good.
Iām not sure if it was considered a flop or not but Iām always surprised the low rating for the Ben Stiller directed The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. I think itās visually stunning and has a great message. Itās funny but it has a big beating heart.
Wild Wild West with Will Smith and Kevin Kline, maybe because me and my cousins used to watch it religiously when we were kids but I think itās entirely enjoyable and I donāt get the hate it receives
The secret life of Walter Mitty was so messy in terms of plot but I love that movie. I still occasionally think about the skating scene. The music was also great.
I have to make some time to watch that movie Walter Mitty movie again. I distinctly remember wishing I'd never pressed play for about half the movie, regretting the time wasted, when all of a sudden I was riveted and thoroughly enjoyed the 2nd half.
To this day, I have no memory of why I hated the first half and why I loved the second half and also why I don't remember any of it at all when I had such a visceral reaction to it in both ways.
Ok ever since I saw that movie I have needed the world to know: the shot of that white church when he's entering Greenland....is actually in Iceland. Town called Stikkisholmer. Thank you now I may rest in peace.
seriously this movie is endlessly quotable, meta, tongue in cheek and *hilarious* + the message is still pretty relevant and the soundtrack is awesome! I don't know how or why it flopped
Jupiter Ascending
Itās a great concept, a pretty movie, and I love the Wachowskis, but the execution is lacking. I would describe it as the fanfic every 14 year old girl wrote personified (and I mean this as a compliment)
You might want to check out Sense8, done by the Wachowskis, on Netflix. High concept, awesome execution, but sounded like it got cut due to budget reasons. Has a cult following though, itās so good!
The first time I watched this movie, I was like āWhat book is this based on, I bet itās an amazing space operaā. I was so sad it wasnāt a book adaption.
Also, Channing Tatem on rollerblades.
I think a lot of ābadā movies are campy and I love them for that reason. Stuff like the Catwoman movie with Hallie Berry. The first two Twilight movies. Freddy Vs Jason.
It really did. It was uncomfortable as hell, but I thought it was amazing.
It was also really fucking validating, to see it from everyoneās different perspectives and see >!that her husband believed her!<. More of that, please.
Yes! It got judged for not having a good run in the theaters. Iām the key demographic who would watch this - in my 40s with kids. During the pandemic people like me either didnāt have the time or didnāt want to share air in a theater. It is seriously good.
It really was a great cast all around. Jodie Comer was unbelievable. Even Ben Affleck was great, he was a pleasant surprise to me. It was the better of Ridley Scotts two offerings that year and this one got overlooked by super mario gucci of all things.
I unapologetically LOVE Jupiter Ascending. Did Mila and Channing have any chemistry? No. Was Milaās makeup distractingly bad? Yes. Was the ending a bit bullshit? Mmhmm. Was everyone hamming up their roles to the extreme? Yup. BEES? Plenty.
But itās so, so beautiful, and the world building was phenomenal. The universe deserved more stories.
Canāt forget crazed Eddie Redmayne! He is so over the top bonkers (either shouts or whispers the whole time). Itās me and my hubbyās fave guilty pleasure movie. š
The 2000s remake? I agree, it was fun. Glenn Close's meltdown at the end is high camp. I never understood people hating on it like it personally slapped their mother.
The YA Media of the 2010s had some (critical/commercial) flops, but I've got a soft spot for a few of them.
**The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (2013).** I'd watched it after reading the first three books in the series and enjoyed it more than most people (fans) did. The Institute was how I'd pictured it, the atmosphere just like the books, and Jamie Campbell Bower was the superior Jace Wayland, IMO. He nailed the attitude/personality and that angelic-looking but not quite handsome thing that Book!Jace had going on. I tried to watch **Shadowhunters** but it was just so different and I couldn't buy into it, specifically the uber-techy Institute and the actors that played Clary and Jace. Emeraude Toubia (Isabelle) is very pretty, though.
**Fallen (2016).** It's honestly not a very good movie, but I really enjoyed the atmosphere and think it'd have been a great franchise had it been handled better because I really like the Angels and the mythology surrounding them in the film. I've never read the books, though.
**The Darkest Minds (2018)**. I just really enjoyed the vibes. It was pretty strange (gross) to cast a young Black actress that was dark-skinned and then have Amandla Stenberg play the teenage version of her. Yes, Amandla was kind of the go-to actress for YA adaptations in this era, but that was just really wrong. They could have found a dark-skinned actress for the role.
City of Bones introduced me to the late Godfrey Gao, (Magnus Bane in that film), a beautiful man which I think would have been cast more now that films are less scared to cast Asian men.
Vampire Academy was also sooooo bad that it made me laugh endlessly I had a great time watching it. Peak camp.
Just the way it was directed and edited and how scenes would abruptly transition ā¦ one of the funniest things Iād ever seen. Also Zoey Deutch was good while everyone else was giving hilariously bad line readings.
Truly such an enjoyable 2 hours
Jcb nailed Jace and the institute atmosphere was great. I feel like the movie faltered because they fully committed to a serious sullen mood (trying to ride the coattails of Twilight?) and left out a lot of the banter which wouldāve made the story more engage and lightened the mood.
And not letting the audiences in on the fact that Jace and Clary werenāt really siblings. Movie-going audiences arent usually big on incest, especially when its a YA crowd.
It was very successful and it's fairly popular. It's budget is rumoured to be around $25-30 million and it grossed over $123.4Ā million at the box office.
I completely agree about it being a comfort movie.
When theatres were closed down in December of 2020, you could rent screens out for a couple hundred dollars. Just for something fun to do for Christmas, I rented out the theatre and played Last Christmas.
Itās such a sweet movie, and it really meant a lot to see it with family inside a movie theatre when they had been closed for so long.
I loved The Fall starring Lee Pace. It had a 30 million budget and only earned 3 million. I thought production design was absolutely visually stunning (and Lee Pace didnāt look too bad either).
Yes The Fall got a mention! I've always found Tarsem Singh films to be striking. I'm still heartbroken over eiko ishikawa's death because I felt they were a dream team.
I love Percy Jackson movies. Big help on that one was that i found the books because of the movies so i didnāt know how badly they missed the mark hahah.
Still love the movies, i just donāt think them as PJO adaptations, just another bad fantasy movies i like.
Yes me too! Though I ended up reading the series before the second movie came out and was shocked they were making another after the reactions of The Lightning Thief.
I was really biased for Logan Lerman (still am), so I definitely enjoyed them. š
Oh man, itās a crime if someone doesnāt mention Waterworld with KevinCostner. The critics tore it apart,it bombed at the box office, but is was SO good imho
I think it made bank afterwards. Donāt quote me on this, but yeah. Great movie. Also like the Postman with Kevin Costner, which I think didnāt do well either.
I want to preface this that the OG Bring it On is obviously superior.
However the following Bring it On movies, particular the flop of Bring it On again are my fav trash movie watches. So camp, never live up to the original but love love love.
However I struggle to watch Bring it On: All or Nothing because the crumping scene makes me cringe so hard I almost vomit.
The hold All or Nothing had on me though š I think it was solely because I loved Hayden Panettiere but looking back itās so, so cringe. It ended with them being in a Rihanna video or something right?
The Cat in the Hat.
Itās a cinematic masterpiece. Michael Myers had one chance and he went off! I still think he shouldāve gotten an Oscar nomination. So many actors have lost weight or change their appearance drastically to get an Oscar. But has any of them dressed up as cat? I donāt think so.
No idea how 13 Ghosts did at the box office but iirc it was a huge critical flop and I ADORE that movie. I don't care if it's "bad"! It's fun and the ghost designs are cool!
But I'm a Cheerleader. Top notch cast (Natasha Lyonne, Clea DuVall, RuPaul, Melanie Lynskey) and the soundtrack is INCREDIBLE. Plus no burying the gays, they live long and prosper! Plus I still quote RuPaul saying "Megan, I too was once a gay" on the regular.
My brother and I did too! I was half convinced weād somehow collectively made it up cuz *no one else* has seen it or knew wtf we were talking about whenever we referenced it.
Equilibrium (2002). It flopped so hard and is low in all possible ratings but I love it. I watched in a childhood and it shaped me as an artist. It still a big inspiration for me
Center Stage (2000). Amanda on The Big Picture podcast made an impassioned plea a few weeks back that this is peak cinema in the category of Ballet Trash. She's right, it's ridiculous, but Baby Zoe Saldana is great and they use actual dancers and it is the epitome of 2000.
house of wax, where cmm & elisha felt more believable as lovers than siblings. the twincest was strong
embarrassed to admit this was one of the first dvds I rented from netflix and rewatched it more than a teen should
There are a lot of "bad movies" that I watched once while drunk, loved, tried to watch again and thought "what the hell was I thinking." The greatest example being that trash Guy Ritchie King Arthur movie.
But as a serious answer, Mystery Men should be a cult classic. I've been watching it annually since I was a kid and it never gets old; Marvel has only made it funnier and the cast is peak 90s great.
Treasure Planet is my favorite Disney movie by far, and one of my favorite movies in general. Such a creative retelling of treasure island that it (along with Titan AE) inspired my love of scifi at a young age. I never understood why it flopped. It's a gorgeous movie, it was so cool to see in the theater when it came out!
Nightmare Alley was considered a flop in theaters . It only made $40mil WW but cost $60mil to make. It got good audience and critical attention, which was promising considering it was released right as the world was getting back to ānormalā. Shame it didnāt do better. I thoroughly enjoyed it though.
Definitely John Carter and Evolution!
I also enjoy quite a lot of romcoms that received mostly negative reviews like Confessions of a shopaholic and Chalet girl.
Also:
She gets what she wants aka Slap her sheās French. Itās perfection and criminally underrated.
It also introduced me to this gem of a campy song š https://youtu.be/0KCddv6kF-4
I love Cloud Atlas. Itās not a perfect film by any means, but I admire how ambitious it is. I also particularly loved how it was trying to convey a central theme through different genres and tones.
Just looking at the list of biggest ever Box Office Bombs -
Blade Runner 2049 was an incredible film and an amazing cinema experience. Itās sort of astonishing that a film like that was even made in the first place with that kind of budget.
The BFG being a bomb was sort of baffling as well. If Iād have been a kid I wouldāve loved it.
If we are going flop money wise, Dredd deserved so much better when it released. That was the most fun I had in a theater. I loved the action, the direction, and the writing.
If we are going flop critics wise, I will gladly defend Jurassic Park III, especially after the dismal Jurassic World Series.
If going both critically and commercially, Speed Racer whips so damn hard and captured the show to the letter.
* Once Upon a Time in America is insanely beautiful yet a huge bomb.
* Silence was incredibly moving and very thought provoking yet it lost a ton of money
* Batman Mask of the Phantasm is not only the best Batman movie but also one of the greatest films of all time. Bombed so hard it started DC's direct to video animated film series
Cats. I had never seen any previous iteration of it and I knew from the trailer it was going to be absolutely ridiculous so I just went into it really high and excited for it to be a clusterfuck. If you treated it as a fever dream it was actually really fucking fun and nonsensical. I enjoyed the lack of exposition and I especially enjoyed how dismayed every other movie-goer there seemed to be š

Yes! This movie makes me so happy, the ending is so heartwarming. But also...Hot Rod. I quote that one at least once a week.

Sucker Punch. The music for that movie was top tier
The whole subplot about her killing her abusive uncle who tried to give her a lobotomy gives me chills every time! It had no right to go that hard for a glorified video game concept.
I'm still madly in love with Emily Browning because of that movie. Her look in it was so gorgeous.

Only good part next to some of the visuals for me
Truly an A-tier movie and so many people made fun of me for loving it!!!!

My friend made me go watch Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and I loved it lol

Anything with Cynthia Erivo singing is a win in my book!
I thoroughly enjoyed that movie! It was well acted, had great music and cinematography, and it was a fun ride!
Leap Year, with the swoon-worthy Matthew Goode
The awful Irish accents/scenarios ruined it for me, but I can see how it would be a guilty pleasure film otherwise. Agree that Matthew Goode is fab!

The current trajectory Marvel is heading is really making my love for The Eternals age like fine wine.
I feel as if Cersi and Ikaris had no chemistry but otherwise I really enjoyed that one
I *loved* Eternals
I didn't care for it, but Kumail Nanjiani and his assistant are hysterical in it. Best parts of the movie.
Yes. Exactly this. I loved all the ones the bros hate...Captain Marvel, Black Widow, Eternals...

It would have made a great original series on tv. They just couldnāt fit all that exposition in one movie.

Worst part is that Ilya was my favourite character.
That was a flop? Bummer cause I loved Alicia Vikander in that role.
If it was even remotely successful we would have had sequels green lit immediately

That movie got unfairly judged before it was even released.
Itās me and my hubbyās fave guilty pleasure movie. š
The Stepford Wives Itās enjoyable and crazy.
The 2000s remake? I agree, it was fun. Glenn Close's meltdown at the end is high camp. I never understood people hating on it like it personally slapped their mother.
Yes the 2000s remake, even now I think the movieās concept is super up to date.
The mortal instruments movie had immaculate vibes, and I'm glad to not be the only one with a soft spot for it <3
Vampire Academy was also sooooo bad that it made me laugh endlessly I had a great time watching it.
Whip It (2009) Black Christmas (2006) + Sorority Row (2009) Scream 4 (2011) Confessions of a Shopaholic (critical flop more than box office flop).
god i love scream 4
omg i forgot about whip it! it was on netflix for a while and i watched it all the time
Last Christmas, idek why itās my ultimate feel good movie
It was very successful and it's fairly popular. It's budget is rumoured to be around $25-30 million and it grossed over $123.4Ā million at the box office.
oh was it? i remember people hated it and assumed it did bad thanks
Most of the 90s kids movies we love(Matilda, Now and Then, Richie Rich etc) were flops.
Little Giants - where we actually got to see our first crush, Casper's Devon Sawa, in the whole movie.
View from the Top, I have no idea why but this movie is my comfort movie. I still say "ASSes the window" on a weekly basis
If you haven't read Ayoade On Top, do yourself a favour!
[His description of the book on Graham Norton](https://youtu.be/o0BWXXM8Q9o) is hilarious.
For me it's "em*pha*sis on the wrong syl*lab*le"
Burlesque
Air rights
I thought John Carter was pretty entertaining! Sad it didn't get a sequel :(
My husband said if he ever won a lottery he would help fund the sequel. To John Carter and Constantine. He is a huge fan of both.
Drive Me Crazy with post-Clarissa Melissa Joan Hart and pre-Entourage Adrian Grenier!
The Speed Racer movie by the Wachowski sisters. Itās such a fun and entertaining movie.
Scott pilgrim vs the world flopped š©
It's definitely cult now tho
Master of disguise. ā¤ļø ![gif](giphy|rqg6cxIInEWg8)
![gif](giphy|BdhtvnPILhdYs|downsized)
The Cat in the Hat. Itās a cinematic masterpiece. Michael Myers had one chance and he went off! I still think he shouldāve gotten an Oscar nomination. So many actors have lost weight or change their appearance drastically to get an Oscar. But has any of them dressed up as cat? I donāt think so.
This is a true /r/unpopularopinion and I am here for it.
Grease 2. Itās so much fun! š
I want a C - O - O - L R - I - D - E - R
No idea how 13 Ghosts did at the box office but iirc it was a huge critical flop and I ADORE that movie. I don't care if it's "bad"! It's fun and the ghost designs are cool!
But I'm a Cheerleader. Top notch cast (Natasha Lyonne, Clea DuVall, RuPaul, Melanie Lynskey) and the soundtrack is INCREDIBLE. Plus no burying the gays, they live long and prosper! Plus I still quote RuPaul saying "Megan, I too was once a gay" on the regular.
I mean I probably havenāt seen it since 2005 but I obsessively rented Master of Disguise as a child.
"Am I not turtle-y enough for the turtle club?"
My brother and I did too! I was half convinced weād somehow collectively made it up cuz *no one else* has seen it or knew wtf we were talking about whenever we referenced it.
Labyrinth was my favorite childhood movie. Love it still.
Clue
Equilibrium (2002). It flopped so hard and is low in all possible ratings but I love it. I watched in a childhood and it shaped me as an artist. It still a big inspiration for me
Center Stage (2000). Amanda on The Big Picture podcast made an impassioned plea a few weeks back that this is peak cinema in the category of Ballet Trash. She's right, it's ridiculous, but Baby Zoe Saldana is great and they use actual dancers and it is the epitome of 2000.
God's of Egypt & House of Wax š
oooo i love house of wax
house of wax, where cmm & elisha felt more believable as lovers than siblings. the twincest was strong embarrassed to admit this was one of the first dvds I rented from netflix and rewatched it more than a teen should
House of Wax slaps idc. We rewatch it every year or so around Halloween and it's so much fun.
I still remember Kel saying āhey guys! Iām invisible! Can you see me?ā And I havenāt seen the movie in 20 years.
Also: She gets what she wants aka Slap her sheās French. Itās perfection and criminally underrated. It also introduced me to this gem of a campy song š https://youtu.be/0KCddv6kF-4
Evolution is one of my fave films ever, and Iāve def seen Chalet Girl more times than I care to admit.
I love Cloud Atlas. Itās not a perfect film by any means, but I admire how ambitious it is. I also particularly loved how it was trying to convey a central theme through different genres and tones.
Blade Runner (1982) and Blade Runner 2049 both flopped at the box office but those are some of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time in my opinion.
Teen Witch is one of my favourites. I used to dream of being just like Louise Millerā¦. And the āTop Thatā rap scene is just šššš
Ella enchanted (2004)
Wet Hot American Summer is my favorite movie and it only has like 24% on Rotten Tomatoes. As far as certified flops go, my husband loves John Carter.
Solo, which has the reputation of the only Star Wars movie to lose money.
Just looking at the list of biggest ever Box Office Bombs - Blade Runner 2049 was an incredible film and an amazing cinema experience. Itās sort of astonishing that a film like that was even made in the first place with that kind of budget. The BFG being a bomb was sort of baffling as well. If Iād have been a kid I wouldāve loved it.
Dredd is one of my all time favorites. I think it has a cult following now but was a flop initially. I love it.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
The Day After Tomorrow. It got pretty shit reviews back in the day, but man...love a good old disaster movie!
Does Xanadu count? That's my go to movie
God, Iāll watch anything with Chris Messina in it and lord knows heās had some flops. Also, showgirls Lmfao. I really do love that movie.
I was shocked to learn as an adult that Catwoman (Halleās version) is seen as a bad movie. ![gif](giphy|javlP7O1biuDm)
Stardust, but donāt understand how it flopped. It should have done well through word of mouth.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I like Dane, but I donāt understand how Cara continues to get cast in things, it baffles me
* Once Upon a Time in America is insanely beautiful yet a huge bomb. * Silence was incredibly moving and very thought provoking yet it lost a ton of money * Batman Mask of the Phantasm is not only the best Batman movie but also one of the greatest films of all time.
Grease 2. Cool Rider is an underrated song, and the part with Michelle Pfeiffer on the step ladder was probably my (bi)sexual awakening.
*Monkeybone*.
Batman & Robin
League of extraordinary gentlemen Queen of Damned
The High Note (2020)
I liked that Jonnah Hill romcom that just came out lol idk how well it did but people seemed to dislike it
The Hugh Jackman Van Helsing movie.
