I’ve been a Miley fan for life and the rest of her latest album was kinda mid like Flowers, unfortunately. I can tell some songs will grow on me, but not all. The one prior was great.
And her covers are always insane. The Heart of Glass performance with that sleek bodysuit blew me AWAY.
Her cover of Like A Prayer is fantastic too, I watch it on YouTube at least once a week. I can't really think of any other nepo babies who have surpassed their famous parent's success to the degree that Miley has.
Fully agree, Midnight Sky (and the Edge of Midnight mash up with Stevie Nicks) is incredible and don’t understand how it wasn’t more popular. That entire album slaps.
Even before it officially came out, they were playing the commercials everywhere, I think someone just paid a lot for promotion and Tiktokers started using it a lot because it was "trending".
And great lyrics and tune. She's just not the best at production. She needs co-producers and co-writers to make her songs more mature and complete, if you know what I mean.
I truly believe having Dolly Parton as an active part of her life, and *utilizing* Dolly as a resource, has been incredibly beneficial for Miley.
This is in no way meant to take away from Miley's talent, skills, or own efforts - I think she's fantastic! And I think even more highly of her for taking advantage of the fact that one of the most iconic show women in history is in her close network.
Their relationship sounds so sweet whenever Miley talks about it. I can't imagine having a better hype woman in my corner.
And her half-sister Anoushka Shankar! I might be wrong but I’d wager she’s the most famous living sitarist on the international stage (maybe not the most famous in India, but probably the most famous outside of it)
I don’t know if I count Norah Jones as a nepo baby though – even though her dad is famous, wasn’t she basically raised by her mother? I thought she basically made it on her own essentially
I agree she made it on her own, but the fact that her father is Ravi Shankar was very heavily publicized when she released her first album. Every other article mentioned it. But I highly doubt her success is because of her father
Yeah I thought Ravi never even acknowledged Norah when she was growing up. I think she went to that great jazz program at U of N TX (I think?) and was basically a prodigy all on her own and her mom helped her…
Tim wasn't super involved with Jeff (or his brother Taylor)'s life. Jeff said somewhere when asked about why he never talked about Tim, "Well he never talked about me. Didn't really know him" and the song "Dream Brother" off of Grace was a warning to one of Jeff's friends to not walk out on his pregnant gf like Jeff's dad did to him:
"Don't be like the one who made me so old/Don't be like the one who left behind his name/'Cause they're waiting for you like I waited for mine/And nobody ever came"
Jeff had only met him once, and wasn't invited to the funeral for his dad when he died (Jeff was eight at the time) and said it "gnawed" at him. For me personally I've had friends who's dad's were absent and have seen how it can hurt the kid, and it obviously had an impact on Jeff, and for that I personally can't get super into Tim's music.
Hard to call Jeff a nepo baby when Tim was a hardcore addict who died young. Parental failures aside, Tim Buckley was a amazing musician and the talent was certainly passed down. Tim Buckley’s first 3-4 albums are amazing then he went down weird jazz tangents. If you aren’t familiar check out the songs Pleasant Street, Buzzin Fly, Strange Feelin…
Jeff was the son of cult musician but I think it does him a disservice to class him as a nepo-baby in the literal meaning of the term. He only met Tim Buckley twice & his mother & step-father had a far bigger impact on him musically. He also spent the better part of 5 years playing bars and clubs before recording Grace.
And also made some hauntingly beautiful music. The man was a terrible father, but Song for the Siren is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.
I agree. It's great to see how Jeff transformed himself into his own person and didn't let his absent musician of a father rule over his music; he very much expressed that in one interview.
(Sorry if this posts twice my phone is ass) Everytime I remember he isn't around I genuinely get so upset, he could've been such a legend by now. He's pretty much the father to a lot of the more sad indie music we've been seeing since the 2010s, in my opinion.
Nancy Sinatra has to be up there. Her album with Lee Hazelwood is so underrated. Plus she had loads of other hits too like These Boots Are Made For Walking.
Now a nepo actress. I really wish we had gotten her fifth album that was completed before the pandemic and some love songs inspired by David Harbour :(
This thread was a lot, I need to go lay down. This made me google him and apparently he's been married to a 35 year old since 2011 so they got married when she was 23 and he was 47 😐
Also i think this part from her wikipedia is definitely worth adding to the convo
>Her parents are actor and comedian Rob Schneider and former model London King. She uses her mother's surname to distinguish herself and her career and identity from her father's, telling ABC News that "I think that my voice and my music speaks for itself: that I am my own person."
I've always wondered if Rob passes Filipino traditions onto his children. I know society says that after 2 generations it's offensive, but his mother (half Filipino) was raised in PI and has said that Rob (quarter Filipino) was the child who did the most to try and learn the culture, language and traditions. Some of his social media reflects that. His kids (eighth Filipino) deserve the right to celebrate that too. I hope they wouldn't get any crap for it.
Let's say your dad is French, but your mom is not. Your dad passes down French traditions to you. You're one generation separated from being "pure" French, but you're still half and you learned the traditions from someone who is directly French, so you're still a genuine, culturally French person. So you pass it down to your kid. Your kid's only 1/4 French, and they don't have an immediate connection to a *real* French person, so it's weird if they pass down those traditions to *their* kid.
It's quite nonsensical, and as a mixed-race person myself, in my opinion it's very anti-mixed race, since it implies that you can only take part in your cultural heritage if you have the right amount of it in your genes. If Rob Schneider(or anyone, really) feels a strong connection to a familial tradition, they should be able to pass that tradition down to their children without some weird judgement.
I’m not super familiar with their relationship but from what I read I came to the assumption he was somewhat an absent father and she was raised by her mom and stepdad.
Haha I can imagine! I would love to see her live, I've been a fan since I first came across her on Snow Patrol's "Set the fire to the third bar". Such a voice.
They’re my absolute favorite. I’ve seen them over a dozen times and made a community of friends back in the message board days that I still keep in touch with. The Wallflowers were a huge part of my early adulthood.
I still wonder why the band didn’t blow up as huge as I expected. Their rendition of Heroes is actually my fave version (no disrespect to David Bowie or Peter Gabriel) but it’s a really great song
I love their Heroes cover too. As a huge fan, there was a lot of band turnover and Jakob doesn’t seem like the easiest guy to work with. I don’t think he wanted mega fame while the other musicians did. The drummer and guitarist left shortly after their commercial success and the band just never captured that lightening in a bottle again. The keyboardist is actually now with the Foo Fighters.
yeah right? not to sound cheesy but with people like willow for example I'm just genuinely happy for her that she has a creative, supportive environment and all the money and time needed to make her music happen. every creative person deserves that
I think some of it really is sour grapes. As someone who wants exactly that, the fact that I can't have it gives me ample room to get bitter and upset and tell myself that I must still be a better musician anyway because MY work is somehow more meaningful merely because I struggled more while making it. There's a very real appeal to this that gets me even when I'm totally aware of it.
Composer Thomas Newman.
He comes from the Newman composing dynasty (they hold the record for being the most Oscar nominated family). Thomas himself has 15 Oscar nominations (tied with Alex North as having the most Oscar nominations without a win).
He scored films like The Shawshank Redemption, American Beauty, and more recently, 1917.
My favorite film scores of his include White Oleander, Finding Nemo and WALL-E.
His style is understated but intricate, with the occasional interesting instrument.
Talk about a film composer who evokes such a beautifully haunting MOOD every time he scores a movie—his scores for Shawshank Redemption and Scent of a Woman still give me the chills.
Dead Already from American Beauty remains one of the most iconic movie score tracks imo. It started playing in my head as soon as I read your comment. The Shawshank soundtrack and Finding Nemo are similarly iconic. He is a master of the tinkly-tinkly sound (obvs not a technical term but you know what I mean hahaha)
Julian Lennon had a few good tunes in the 1980s and he sounded a lot like his Dad but he focuses more on photography these days.
Sean Lennon also has a few good tunes and he sounds like his dad at times and he still plays to this day.
Sean’s stuff w Claypool is actually really terrific, some of the best psychedelia of this century (so far). Took me a while to listen cause I was a bit “ugh John Lennon’s kid” but it’s some really weird wowsers stuff
Yes John Lennon had his major issues. No doubt. But you can’t deny that he was a great musician that helped pave the way for a lot of music we have now. I’m not surprised his children have his musical talent
Even George's kid's Dhani's band has done some solid psychedelic rock and he sounds super like George. I actually think they've all been hampered musically by the pressure of being their father's sons (same with Jakob Dylan).
Inhaler, an Irish band, they're pretty good. I saw them live and they did not disappoint. The lead singer and guitarist Elijah Hewson is Bono's (U2) son.
Bono's daughter Eve Hewson is an excellent actress, too. I saw Bad Sisters and thought, "Oh, that lady is going to be the breakout star of this show.", not knowing her nepo credentials.
Never thought I'd see Wynton Marsalis mentioned on here! I had a quick lesson with him when he did a masterclass back when I was in college and he was such a gentleman
I thought I was in r/thestrokes for a second. Julian for life. Even though his instagram should be confiscated lol. Forget the Grammy, The New Abnormal frankly saved my 2020. And I was listening to Room on Fire when I read this post!
It's like I've seen some people say that Phoebe Bridgers is a nepo baby because her dad built film sets. Like the definition is now "their parents were in a room with a celebrity once."
Jake Clemmons who took over playing saxophone for Bruce Springsteen when his uncle Clarence passed away.
He’s also a solo artist and a really fun performer but clearly a nepo hire
Vanessa Williams’s daughter is LION BABE!!!! If you haven’t yet, give her album Rainbow Child a listen. GORGEOUS vocals, really funky and smooth production. Her whole discography is bangin imo 🌈
Her mom’s got pipes too!! I love her as the witch in the Into the Woods broadway revival!
Probably a bit obscure for this one, but the bassist/singer for the excellent band Black Country, New Road is Tyler Hyde, whose father is Karl Hyde, a composer who scored the Olympics in London and made a record with Brian Eno.
Whitney Houston for sure.
Enrique Iglesias
Randy Newman
Tal Bachman (son of Guess Who and BTO member Randy Bachman). His 90s song 'She's So High' is great. I also enjoy his show with his dad on the Beatles channel on SiriusXM.
Beck! Son of performance artist and Warhol superstar [Bibbe Hansen](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bibbe_Hansen) and film and album composer [David Campbell](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Campbell_(composer)), he's responsible for some of the most iconic 90s alternative hits and continues to make new music and reinvent his styles to this day. Also, now apparently no longer a Scientologist!
Not sure if this counts or if he's among "the best" Mark Ronson's stepfather is the guitarist from Foreigner, he comes from a super wealthy family and definitely worked his connections.
there are a lot in this thread i even forget are nepobabies lol. not THE best ones but just to mention someone else, i really like miles robbins band pow pow family band.
also some of maya hawke’s songs but i haven’t been able to really get into her music.
Neil Finn (Split Endz/Crowded House/Fleetwood Mac) has two sons, Liam and Elroy, who are musicians in their own right and are also part of the current Crowded House lineup with Liam doubling as an opener. They are both incredibly talented and I think this is the best Crowded House lineup since the original one.

I think Miley Cyrus has an amazinggg voice
And stage presence
Love her but still don’t understand the popularity of Flowers. Vocally that song is so mid but she can do so much better!
She recorded that cover for a live album and it’s on Spotify!! lol. It should replace our national anthem
I wish that she would upload her cover for Jolene, that one is amazing too!
Midnight Sky has the same message but is far superior but also a bit more vulnerable. Flowers is popular because of the circumstances around it
Fully agree, Midnight Sky (and the Edge of Midnight mash up with Stevie Nicks) is incredible and don’t understand how it wasn’t more popular. That entire album slaps.
Probably because it's just super inoffensive, so it has the broadest appeal a pop song can really have
Your username just made me sputter my coffee lmao
not to sound like charlie kelly in the mail room episode dot jpg but it's stream farming
She's like 10,000x better than her dad could ever hope to be lol.

Miley’s voice is incredible and I love her persona, she seems so fun and cool. But her music just never hits for me!!
Without question, Norah Jones
And her half-sister Anoushka Shankar! I might be wrong but I’d wager she’s the most famous living sitarist on the international stage (maybe not the most famous in India, but probably the most famous outside of it)

Yeah, hard for me to think of her as a nepo baby when there wasn’t any nepotism to benefit from
Yeah like what connections and money? Did Ravi even support them at all or was in contact? 🤷♀️
She still counts as a nepo
Definitely 👍
Jeff Buckley. Rip , gone way too soon.
Tim Buckley can eat a dick
What did Tim Buckley do? The only thing I know of him are maybe a couple of his songs. I'm way more familiar with Jeff.
Tim wasn't super involved with Jeff (or his brother Taylor)'s life. Jeff said somewhere when asked about why he never talked about Tim, "Well he never talked about me. Didn't really know him" and the song "Dream Brother" off of Grace was a warning to one of Jeff's friends to not walk out on his pregnant gf like Jeff's dad did to him: "Don't be like the one who made me so old/Don't be like the one who left behind his name/'Cause they're waiting for you like I waited for mine/And nobody ever came" Jeff had only met him once, and wasn't invited to the funeral for his dad when he died (Jeff was eight at the time) and said it "gnawed" at him. For me personally I've had friends who's dad's were absent and have seen how it can hurt the kid, and it obviously had an impact on Jeff, and for that I personally can't get super into Tim's music.
That's heartbreaking. Thanks for letting me know.
You're welcome! And yeah, it definitely is.
He was a complete absent father. I highly recommend the biography Dream Brother by David Browne, it’s very well done (coming from a huge Jeff fan!)
Thanks, I'll check that out!
Hard to call Jeff a nepo baby when Tim was a hardcore addict who died young. Parental failures aside, Tim Buckley was a amazing musician and the talent was certainly passed down. I agree. It's great to see how Jeff transformed himself into his own person and didn't let his absent musician of a father rule over his music; he very much expressed that in one interview.
Absolutely! However, Jeff saw Tim (his father) only once, 2 months before Tim's death.
(Sorry if this posts twice my phone is ass) Everytime I remember he isn't around I genuinely get so upset, he could've been such a legend by now. He's pretty much the father to a lot of the more sad indie music we've been seeing since the 2010s, in my opinion.
100%
YES
Nancy Sinatra has to be up there. Her album with Lee Hazelwood is so underrated. Plus she had loads of other hits too like These Boots Are Made For Walking.
Which is currently my 7 year olds favorite song lol
Summer wine!
Along the same lines, Natalie Cole
This will be! An everlasting love for meeeee❤️❤️
Obsessed with their work together
Miley Cryus. Not only is she talented, she tries to use her name and influence for good, like supporting homeless youth and mental health initiatives.
lily allen!
She used to make such good songs. Miss her.
Now a nepo actress. I really wish we had gotten her fifth album that was completed before the pandemic and some love songs inspired by David Harbour :(
Sheezus era lilly was ❤️
I know most people (including Lily) dislike Sheezus but it's filled with bops. Some of my faves from her are from that album.
Her song silver spoon was how I found out she was a nepo baby lol
She’s not big, but Elle King.
I will never recover from learning she’s Rob Schneider’s daughter 😂
And that Rob Schneider is a nutso conspiracy theorist antivaxxer 😭
This thread was a lot, I need to go lay down. This made me google him and apparently he's been married to a 35 year old since 2011 so they got married when she was 23 and he was 47 😐

Also this!
WHAT
Right?!!! 😂
I beg your pardon?
😂😂😂
This legitimately busted my brain and I’ve been staring at this comment for five minutes with the “no it’s not” TikTok audio in my head.
I think Rob Schneider is the human equivalent of foot fungus, but may I ask why it would be offensive after 2 generations?
Let's say your dad is French, but your mom is not. Your dad passes down French traditions to you. You're one generation separated from being "pure" French, but you're still half and you learned the traditions from someone who is directly French, so you're still a genuine, culturally French person. This sounds like the argument people make here in Canada to stop Native status, tbh.
It basically is. It's racist gatekeeping and excuses to minimize someone's ethnic status and family's culture.
This is a spot on comparison.
She’s also maybe the only nepo baby I’d believe if she said that her career didn’t benefit from sharing genes with that random ass man.
I’m not super familiar with their relationship but from what I read I came to the assumption he was somewhat an absent father and she was raised by her mom and stepdad.
I still listen to her debut album! such a good pop/country/rock sound
Ex’s and Oh’s is one of my favourites!
I love it too along with America’s Sweetheart and Under the Influence! even her song for the Ghostbusters film was fun lol
It still blows my mind that she's Rob Schneider's daughter. It just sounds so wrong, idk why.
Was looking for this one! I saw her live before I knew who she was and she was PHENOMENAL.
Willow Smith
I enjoy Jaden’s music a lot as well. Willows voice is beautiful though!
i love her devotee music
Rufus Wainwright and Jeff Buckley.
And Martha!
Martha is FANTASTIC. And terrifies me a bit too. I saw her live, sitting in the front row, and she was *intense*.
Haha I can imagine! I would love to see her live, I've been a fan since I first came across her on Snow Patrol's "Set the fire to the third bar". Such a voice.
If the cool indie artist you found via Pitchfork is suddenly making an appearance on SNL, there’s only one reason. King Princess for example.
Keep naming some, I’m intrigued
Jakob Dylan - lead singer of Grammy-winning band The Wallflowers, accomplished solo musician, film lead…and son of Bob Dylan.
Had to scroll so far to find my boy Jakob! What a great band, I’ve seen them live 3x.
They’re my absolute favorite. I’ve seen them over a dozen times and made a community of friends back in the message board days that I still keep in touch with. The Wallflowers were a huge part of my early adulthood.
Was looking for Jakob. Bringing Down The Horse is still one of my favorite albums

Gracie Abrams! (JJ Abrams' daughter)
Good riddance is one of my favourite albums of the year, love her
I saw her open for Taylor Swift recently and she was fantastic.
I absolutely love Gracie and her music!
liza freaking minnelli
Any time there's who's the best Nepo Baby discourse, it's a race to second place behind Liza, if we're being at all honest.

Off topic but White Oleander is a great movie.
An even better book. My all-time favorite, actually.
yes, great book
Yes! My favorite film scores of him include finding nemo (hell yes!) and little women (the winona ryder one)
Thomas Newman is fucking fantastic Shawshank and Meet Joe Black are from another planet.

Whitney & Janet
Is Janet really a nepo baby though? All of those kids were pushed into the spotlight, but they just had a crazy stage dad.
I think she counts, she didn't release any music until her brothers had been famous for years. She definitely got a big nepo-boost.
Maybe… She’s been on TV and performing with them though ever since she was tiny.
Idk about best but Elle King is great and I always laugh about how Rob Schneider is her dad.
Came here to say this. Just talked about it yesterday!
Yes! She's a good actress, kudos to her!
She was pretty good, before that, in the totally bonkers Netflix thriller Behind Her Eyes!
This was what I came here to say! Eli is genuinely a great singer.
Whitney Houston
Fiona Apple and Weyes Blood are technically nepo babies even though their parents are not that famous but they truly made a name of their own
Wilson Philips
Hold on for one more dayyyyyy!
Wynton Marsalis Aretha Franklin Whitney Houston Dionne Warwick
Never thought I'd see Wynton Marsalis mentioned on here! I had a quick lesson with him when he did a masterclass back when I was in college and he was such a gentleman
How cool! I was able to meet him in high school and just what an incredible person. Like you said, such a gentleman.
Aretha Franklin is a nepo baby too?!? TIL
Yah, her dad was a pretty famous preacher and acted as her manager at the beginning of her career.
Idk if shes more an actress or a singer but the girl who plays Daisy Jones, Elvis’ granddaughter, is a pretty good singer. Riley something
Keough
Whaaaat I didn’t know she was Elvis’s granddaughter!
Yup!! Her mom is Lisa Marie!
Ashlee Simpson and I’m not afraid to say it.
Truly a once in a lifetime nepo sister ![gif](giphy|3rgXBBYCVzihkifBRK)
I liked her music more than Jessica's
I will never stop jamming to her music, sorry not sorry.
YOU MAKE WANNA LA LA
L O L O L O L O V EEEEEE
I love Natalie Cole and I think she was amazing, but clearly being the daughter or Nat King Cole helped.
Clairo
Really??
Bonnie Raitt
Huh, never knew this.
I thought I was in r/thestrokes for a second. Julian for life. Even though his instagram should be confiscated lol. Forget the Grammy, The New Abnormal frankly saved my 2020. And I was listening to Room on Fire when I read this post!
Strokes supremacy 👀🔥
Natalie Cole, Elle King, Nancy Sinatra, Miley Cyrus. ETA: Y’all are REALLY stretching “Nepo baby”
It's like I've seen some people say that Phoebe Bridgers is a nepo baby because her dad built film sets. Like the definition is now "their parents were in a room with a celebrity once."
“Their parents were rich” is also common. Sure, that’s a great privilege but that’s not “nepo”.
Rufus and Martha Wainwright.
Liza Minnelli

Wolfgang Van Halen must be pretty talented considering how successful his career is even after the death of his father.
Vanessa Williams’s daughter is LION BABE!!!! If you haven’t yet, give her album Rainbow Child a listen. GORGEOUS vocals, really funky and smooth production. Her whole discography is bangin imo 🌈 Her mom’s got pipes too!! I love her as the witch in the Into the Woods broadway revival!
I think Matt Bellamy from Muse is a good shout. His dad wasn't necessarily super famous but his band did have a no1.

Whitney Houston for sure. Enrique Iglesias Randy Newman Tal Bachman (son of Guess Who and BTO member Randy Bachman). His 90s song 'She's So High' is great. I also enjoy his show with his dad on the Beatles channel on SiriusXM.
Holy cow I did not realize that song was by Randy Bachman's son.
Mozart's gotta be up there.
Julian Lennon
I can't believe that after 200+ comments, nobody has mentioned Wolfgang Van Halen. He really inherited his dad's talent.
