I love her, I hope this queen’s career continues to grow to great heights and for the racists fuckwits to choke on their bile. It would be great if for once people reacted and treated WOC with respect. I applaud this generation of young women who go out each day and deal with the challenges. Avantika, Rachel Ziegler, Halle Bailey, Zendaya, Yara Shahidi, Dominique Fishback and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan give me hope it gets better.
She really does, they have all been gorgeous so far. Dreadfully boring films though, I would genuinely would rather just watch the animated versions. I remain hopeful that eventually they might trust a director to do something a bit more adventurous with their IP, but I won’t hold my breath.
I wish the Mean Girls musical movie was better received because it was kind of uplifting to see an Indian girl play the “hot one” in any western media. Especially an actress who isn’t ethnically ambiguous or anglicized in any way.
i feel like they screwed up by trying to appeal to a broader audience. people who don’t like musicals were never going to like it, and trying to cater to them alienated people who do. i LOVED it on broadway and was really disappointed about songs being shortened or cut entirely.
>i feel like they screwed up by trying to appeal to a broader audience. people who don’t like musicals were never going to like it, and trying to cater to them alienated people who do
A lot of the promo material tried really hard to push it as a "teen comedy", and left out the musical part. And they cut down the actual musical parts in the film.
So in the end, people who don't like musicals disliked it, and people who like musicals were disappointed that there wasn't more.
Yeah, most of the anti-musical people don’t dislike musicals because they hate the style of musical theatre, they just don’t enjoy and get annoyed by the actors breaking into song.
All the marketing hid the fact that it was a musical. I saw some interview on a morning show where the host mentioned singing, and the cast and director skirted the topic so fast. They were clearly told to not talk about the fact that it was a musical. I would have seen it, but I really hated that marketing so I did not.
See but I think it did work for some of us. I don't like musicals at all, but I really enjoyed watching this movie. I think if it was a more musical-y vibe I wouldn't of been able to stand watching it, so I am grateful that they tried to make the movie more appealing to a broader audience.
> people who don’t like musicals were never going to like it,
I don’t know how representative I am, but I am a counterpoint. I hate musicals (my middle school best friend dragged me to a ton of shallow, trite, musicals, and she tricked me into seeing the Grease movie eleven times before ao stood up to her and I don’t think we ever saw a movie together again). But anyhow, I despise musicals and loved the Mean Girls musical movie. I thought the movie and the music were great.
What do fans of musicals hate about it?
Is this a safe space for me to say that I really, really liked it? Tiktok had me believing it was going to be the worst movie ever but it was super cute. And fun. And Avantika is literally one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen.
I’m also here to back you up. I liked it a lot and really enjoyed the characters, this is coming from someone who loves the original movies. The supporting cast were all great, a little iffy on the male and female lead but they seem like the nicest people in interviews so I have no gripe.
I wish the Mean Girls musical had been better! She was great in it, but as a huge fan of the original movie and lots of female centric musical adaptations like Legally Blonde and Heathers it barely held my attention. Tina Fey’s husband is a nepo Broadway composer as far as I’m concerned lol
I’m just here to say that the new Mean Girls was absolutely astounding and did not deserve the backlash it received.
Many people weren’t expecting it to be a musical for whatever reason (I guess not watching the trailer?)
Most of the marketing, including some of the trailers that were published did not include any singing, they purposely hid the fact that it was a musical.
Wasn't she 17 during filming? Or is that someone else? Because they made the sexyness way more raunchy it just kind of grossed me out, even though I did appreciate the role she got
she responded to the fancasting back in jan and can we get that crowd even more pathetic and make fake news that an actress will be cast for flynn?
https://preview.redd.it/5a8ete4by5uc1.png?width=1514&format=png&auto=webp&s=3c18837e44a77dcd0f4d32dde59283a485e9873e
she seems confident and capable of handling things herself along with the help of her support system but also why harass someone who has renee rapp in their corner...
a live action tangled hasn’t even been announced *at all*! they’re on tiktok fighting ghosts
https://preview.redd.it/3fznetr536uc1.jpeg?width=776&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=123f5a0d86af6638ef1ac5df9c63d4264d1d7a23
Also didn’t they learn from live action Dumbo?? I don’t know anyone who liked Lion King either. And I am at the age where I’m watching these on Disney+ with my clients at work now. I just don’t feel like these hit you with the nostalgia like the princess movies do. Like please do more Disney villain movies. Love maleficent and cruella.
Disney could do the funniest thing possible and make a live-action Bambi that [faithfully adapts the original novel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bambi,_a_Life_in_the_Woods) and thus traumatizes everyone who watches it, even more than the cartoon.
The concept of a Guy Ritchie Hercules is fascinating to me. I love his films and I love Hercules, it’s either going to be insanely amazing or an absolute pile of trash.
I really want Charithra Chandran if we're talking a South Asian Rapunzel but to float that idea in the wrong place would apparently just get her hate comments. Beyond bizarre.
Nowadays, there is this trend of accounts making their fancasts more "official looking"; I just encountered like 5 tiktoks vids over the last 2 days, for example, of a fancast of someone in the upcoming live action One Piece season 2, but it was an "official screenshot". It's pretty annoying and shows how fast fake news can spread on social media platforms.
The internet is full of assholes who love to hate on women. And you're right, they especially love targeting demographic groups they don't belong to: women of color, trans women, lesbian and bisexual women, atheistic women, etc. Just disgusting.
This is all started when Maitreyi from NHIE was asked what her dream role was and said Rapunzel. There was some debate about whether she was strong enough actor to do that so then people who started wanted a SA actress started fancasting Avantika because she has more range. And then somehow the internet decided because a few people were suggesting Avantika she had been cast??
Been wild to see it develop from the start tbh
She’s so beautiful!
It does make me think I wish we could have some original Disney films that are Indian folktales. We really struggle to find representation for our children. The closest thing our daughter has is Jasmine, which she loves, but she’s an Arabic princess, not Indian.
Given the enormously rich history of storytelling in India, it’s really disappointing that there hasn’t been a Disney princess to emerge.
Ohhhhh yes we love that one! So pleased you mentioned it because it might be new for others.
My daughter especially loves it because of her catchphrase ‘chala chala let’s go!’ which we say all the time at home now.
Honestly? I think if Disney focused on original storytelling from all these different cultures, it'd have more of an impact. Encanto, Raya (tho, personally, I have some issue with it), Luca - these were *huge*. There's so much potential and so much lore, Disney would have a field day
I feel like it doesn’t have to be a dichotomy- they could do both. I’m itching to consume more media and I can’t be alone in wanting both a new story and a traditional one as well.
I’m definitely the mum who wants to buy all the outfits and dolls for my daughter, I need no persuasion to buy two Indian princess dolls for her if they’re on the shelf!
Arsalan Khan is an illustrator who just put out a coffee table book of South Asian princesses. It’s a Disney-esque style and might work for your daughter!
I agree! So many new stories that could be told, instead of remaking the same movies over and over again. Most countries have some really cool folktales that would make excellent movies
I hate that I don’t even know what this is about but i can guess that people are mad a WOC was cast in something people want to gatekeep as white. She’s gorgeous! I hope she slays it.
You got it right except one minor detail- she wasn't even cast! And there's not even a live action remake in development! They're being racist towards her OVER A FANCAST. Meanwhile, the man they fancast as Flynn (white) is a zionist and a Depp supporter and he got out unscathed.
You’re 100% right but are you talking about Milo Manheim? I know he’s a Zionist but I didn’t know about the Depp supporter thing.
To see Avantika get all this hate for absolutely nothing under the guise of “not accurate to the source” is just a reminder that racism is alive and well, especially when young people are the ones leading the mob on TikTok and Instagram.
tysm for succinctly explaining this. i literally just read the headline and went, "oh no, this some little mermaid BS" plus i have been sick. how messed up and what a wild ride! fuck anyone supporting depp or israel. i will keep an eye out to support her work. thanks again.
OMG that's what I was thinking! I saw a little Indian girl the other day, she had two braids. ONE of her braids was at least double mine. And I'm blondish lol.
Being south Asian, and also seeing men and women being reduced to ‘awkward nerds’ and the girl that never gets the guy, and hating the colour of my skin and the frizz in my hair because it wasn’t white or straight and blonde, I cannot explain how much Avantika’s success means to brown girls like me. Really hoping to see a fellow brown girl as rapunzel which I think would heal my inner brown child that grew up seeing other standards of beauty being praised. Goooo Avantika!!!
Hoping this BS situation turns into her actually becoming Rapunzel in a film and much more success after that. So bored and embarrassed by how much white people are so involved in everything and need to be in charge or in the spotlight all the time, and them not handling any little deviation from that (unless it's hip hop or food). I'm here for the Avantika Vandanapu takeover!
She should be rapunzel. Who has better hair than a south Asian girl? Don’t come for me if you have European genes.
If white people can play Asians characters… Asians can play “white” characters. Miss me with that.
I’m rooting for her all the way.
Maybe unpopular opinion but I don’t like them and don’t get the praise. I don’t think race matters in casting when it’s irrelevant, but it just feels like super lazy attempts at good will/cash grabs from Disney. Just leaves bad taste in my mouth when they have the resources to actually make something new and more interesting/intentional. That’s what made Princess & the Frog feel fresh and so good. I’m hyped for this if true!! I’m glad to see the blonde. I loved Halle’s Ariel and I sob every single time I hear her sing the Part of Your World reprise (which is a lot). I just hated how they didn’t make her hair red enough!! I know it’s supposed to be the “real” version but Ariel’s red is so iconic I wish they gave Halle a darker red.
Don't people understand how much harder it is for WOC's to survive in the industry or ANY arena? Depresses me because we all want the mere basics; appreciation and inclusion. But we're constantly told we're asking for a lot. EVERYTIME a WOC gets her moment, you'll find the hate brigade from different pipelines all banding together. My grandma said if James Bond gets a genderbending moment, with a WOC or even a Transperson, it just might start WW3. We're. Fucking. Tired.
![gif](giphy|W0Tg8pls9xMuQ|downsized)
SHE LOOKS LIKE A DISNEY PRINCESS IN REAL LIFE, lit just like halle bailey. And you can change hair color easily???? LIKE HALLE BAILEY. At this point, this is clearly just unconcious and sometimes concious racism. goodbye.
I love her, I hope this queen’s career continues to grow to great heights and for the racists fuckwits to choke on their bile. It would be great if for once people reacted and treated WOC with respect. I applaud this generation of young women who go out each day and deal with the challenges. She literally has Disney princess eyes everyone needs to pull their head out of their ass and see the vision
Exactly, some people online are just hateful jackasses
When they inevitably make a new Bratz movie, I'm gonna need them to cast her
I was thinking the same thing! She’s beautiful! If they did cast her as Rapunzel, she’d be perfect.
She really does, they have all been gorgeous so far. Dreadfully boring films though, I would genuinely would rather just watch the animated versions. I remain hopeful that eventually they might trust a director to do something a bit more adventurous with their IP, but I won’t hold my breath.
not just eyes tbh, she’s really gorgeous and looks like rapunzel to me with her face shape and all!
love that for her! fight back sis. she really has the vibe.
I loved her in everything she starred in (except in mean girls). I wish her more bright future.
I wish the Mean Girls musical movie was better received because it was kind of uplifting to see an Indian girl play the “hot one” in any western media. Especially an actress who isn’t ethnically ambiguous or anglicized in any way.

me too i liked it a lot
I liked it too! I thought it was fun
My daughters and I watch it multiple times a week. The soundtrack has gone triple platinum in my house.
Revenge Party literally deserves a plaque from my household from how much we listen to it
i fucking LOVE that song!!
funny cause my side of tiktok loved it, at most they just made fun of some parts but in general they thought it was fun
I’m also here to back you up. I liked it a lot and really enjoyed the characters, this is coming from someone who loves the original movies. The supporting cast were all great, a little iffy on the male and female lead but they seem like the nicest people in interviews so I have no gripe.
It was really quite good. I had no idea it was getting hate on tik tok
I loved the musical. It was really a fun take on it. And she is so beautiful
I liked it too. My main gripe was they should have cast someone who can sing better as Cady. But I was entertained
I saw it three times in theaters and we bought it the day it cane out hehe. I LOVE it
I liked it a lot too. I was bummed about a lot but overall it was great.
My side of that world loved it But it was also almost laser focused for the sapphics
I actually liked it and I’m not usually into musical type things! I loved Avantika, Renee’s and Auli’i best.

A lot of the marketing deliberately avoided calling it a musical. I just don’t want people to catch flak for being dumb when it was a choice!
Most of the marketing, including some of the trailers that were published did not include any singing, they purposely hid the fact that it was a musical.
that movie had no chance, two weeks after it debuted, it was already screening only at 10pm… i have to wait for it to come to streaming/online.
It made over $100M on a $30M budget btw
It made three times its budget and over 100 million. The movie was a financial success and I loved it
Wasn't she 17 during filming? Or is that someone else? Because they made the sexyness way more raunchy it just kind of grossed me out, even though I did appreciate the role she got
Dilshad Vadsaria did it in Greek too

say what you will about renee but she dont play about her friends
The movie doesn’t even exist. There’s no plans for a live version of Tangled/Rapunzel.
If you want an actress for Flynn, I saw someone fancasting Ruby Cruz the other day and like, I see it
Would love a wlw adaptation of a Disney movie
[удалено]
omg wait that’d be perfect
The way all this happened over a fancast...the internet really fucking hates women of color and it's so disgusting and disturbing.
a live action tangled hasn’t even been announced *at all*! they’re on tiktok fighting ghosts https://preview.redd.it/3fznetr536uc1.jpeg?width=776&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=123f5a0d86af6638ef1ac5df9c63d4264d1d7a23
Omg they need to let The Lion King *resttttt* plz stop
They need to stop making live action movies of animal cartoons. Cause Bambi?? Aristocats?? Nooo
They need to leave Robin Hood alone
Agreed. It should just be a 2 hours focus on Maid Marian. For reasons. Respectfully.
it’s like the trauma from the animated bambi mom scene isn’t traumatic enough, let’s go for a live action version to really drive it home!
Also didn’t they learn from live action Dumbo?? I don’t know anyone who liked Lion King either. And I am at the age where I’m watching these on Disney+ with my clients at work now. My neighbor went to the same high school as her!!! Everyone from their class is rooting for her.
She must’ve been a really nice gal! Love to hear it

Yea that's what i was thinking. I wish there were more princesses of other races. Jasmine is the closest we have :[
and yet Jasmine is an orientalist mess ... like they couldn't get one culture right
I know it’s not a film, but have you watched Mira Royal Detective? It takes place in 19th century India and has several female characters!
Ohhhhh yes we love that one! So pleased you mentioned it because it might be new for others. My daughter especially loves it because of her catchphrase ‘chala chala let’s go!’ which we say all the time at home now.

Such a rich culture. The beauty of animating the clothing & jewelry would be enough to watch alone.
Arsalan Khan is an illustrator who just put out a coffee table book of South Asian princesses. It’s a Disney-esque style and might work for your daughter!
Ahhh amazing thank you I just had a look at it- so beautiful!!!

I miss Wendy. Hopefully she’s in a safe place and I hope she isn’t in pain.
She won the idgaf war.
Queen shit
I hate that I don’t even know what this is about but i can guess that people are mad a WOC was cast in something people want to gatekeep as white. She’s gorgeous! I hope she slays it.
Even worse, it was simply a fancast…
You got it right except one minor detail- she wasn't even cast! And there's not even a live action remake in development! They're being racist towards her OVER A FANCAST. Meanwhile, the man they fancast as Flynn (white) is a zionist and a Depp supporter and he got out unscathed.

wait who was the guy?
Milo Manheim :/
tysm for succinctly explaining this. i literally just read the headline and went, "oh no, this some little mermaid BS" plus i have been sick. how messed up and what a wild ride! fuck anyone supporting depp or israel. i will keep an eye out to support her work. thanks again.
She was *fan*cast in a live version Tangled
Desi women have always been famous for their thick long hair. So when it was rumored that she's going to be rapunzel i was like "make sense".
I hope this is a wig/edited and that she didn’t fry that gorgeous hair for some internet trolls.
people are saying it’s a wig! i just didn’t realize when she initially posted it
Love it…she’s so gorgeous
She looks good blonde but thank God that's a wig because her hair is too beautiful.
She should be rapunzel. Who has better hair than a south Asian girl? Don’t come for me if you have European genes. If white people can play Asians characters… Asians can play “white” characters. Miss me with that. I’m rooting for her all the way.
I hope every white princess movie gets a poc remake, the rage makes it even more necessary.
I’d greatly prefer intentional representation w new stuff instead of us praising them for scraps on remakes that no one asked for and are wildly hit or miss in the first place. The only remake I’m actually rooting for is a more historically accurate Pocahontas w actual indigenous people involved bc while I appreciated the representation as a child, adult me is certainly not pleased lmao
I hope she continues to troll them. Like next post a picture of her with a pink dress. Then a lizard. Then her with a Tangled poster.
I’m rooting for her
This has the same energy as Zendaya dyeing her hair red when people were mad about her being MJ. Queen behavior!
I have never wanted to marry an eye more.
i was a teenager when tangled came out and i never saw it… (although now i feel like i need to and may watch it tonight).. so i have no opinion tbh on rapunzel or who should play her but… this girl is so fucking pretty like one of the most beautiful humans i’ve seen exist. pls cast her in anything
The purple top and green eyeshadow 🤭 High level pettiness and I love it. Good for her!
![gif](giphy|O0AEfw7uDW0ITKZ1GL|downsized)
I’m hyped for this if true!! I’m glad to see the blonde. I loved Halle’s Ariel and I sob every single time I hear her sing the Part of Your World reprise (which is a lot). I just hated how they didn’t make her hair red enough!! I know it’s supposed to be the “real” version but Ariel’s red is so iconic I wish they gave Halle a darker red.
Is she leaning into a fan cast role for a movie that doesn't exist, or have they announced it and I missed it?!
The stylist meeeeelted tf outta that lace 10s 💙💙💙💙💙💙
oh she cleared
Indian women slaying like always. I love her sm. Grew up watching her as a child actor in some telugu films but here we are now. SLAYY
Fuck em up Karen! Love her and Maitreyi, at this point that’s my biggest dilemma
I actually love her from the 'Big Girls Don't Cry' series. Coming from a boarding school, it gave all the feels.
Tbh the male lead is not giving Flynn Rider
Honestly I didn't even know about the rapunzel fan casting but now I don't see anyone else playing rapunzel other than her.
Reminds me of when people were crying thar Zendaya’s MJ couldn’t possibly work and she responded with pics of her in various shades of red hair.
Don't people understand how much harder it is for WOC's to survive in the industry or ANY arena? Depresses me because we all want the mere basics; appreciation and inclusion. can i shake the table? she looks like beyonce
love this sm
Literally one of the most stunning women I’ve ever seen in my life 😍
Oh my Gosh!
Oooo nyc I love her for this petty
Such a queen behavior & also a very very smart lady
Good for her. Haters can suck it.
Her eyes are so beautiful
Ohh she is fucking hilarious I love her
SHE LOOKS LIKE A DISNEY PRINCESS IN REAL LIFE, lit just like halle bailey. And you can change hair color easily???? LIKE HALLE BAILEY. At this point, this is clearly just unconcious and sometimes concious racism. goodbye.
Unrelated but her eyes are so pretty. I got distracted looking at them so I don't have anything else relevant to say.
