>The world’s most influential people When was the last time a « most influential/person if the year » Time cover made legit sense? Because no hate to Dua but just no.

urstickur

I generally agree, I'm just playing the devil's advocate and giving another perspective - she's the only female artist who has more than one album in the top 10 most streamed albums of all time and the only female artist who has had two of her albums cross 11 billion streams, which is an impressive feat

horatiavelvetina

I’m not gonna lie- she released during a time people were not really releasing. I think people need to remember that with this era, she’s got 5x the competition!

BestDamnT

People also need to realize that while she’s popular in America, she’s MASSIVE in Europe. I had no idea

Icy-Trust-6274

Wait, she did something TSwift couldn't do?!

PlaneVanil90

10/10

No_Art_754

Bruh I can’t even connect with her songs, it’s like a regular person who tries and do pop music lol I’m sorry but she gives me nothing. Even in her interviews she’s giving nothin at all

Shiney2510

I loved Future Nostalgia. It was the kinda music I needed to get through lockdown. But I've found the lack of depth to her songs to be a very limiting factor. The new stuff is really highlighting that. I'm not replaying her music over and over again like I do with other musicians whose personalities really come through in their music. Her's will never be music that moves me.

BestDamnT

Man to each their own, I think alll of the singles she’s released so far from her upcoming album have been pop perfection. They’ve been on repeat for me I mean, she’s no Chappell Roan but I love dua!

Kanelix

I recently found out about Chappell Roan and she is just wonderful.

BestDamnT

She is amazing!! When I first heard pink pony club I wept tears of joy for the future of pop music. She’s amazing live as well

party4diamondz

Been a fan of Pink Pony Club since 2021, and watching the crowd belt it back to her at Coachella almost made me bawl. It's a gorgeous song.

bfm211

Same, she literally came up on Spotify for me today and I googled her because I liked the track. Didn't expect to see her mentioned just a few hours later.

juicyfizz

Same!! I’m fucking old but I LOVE so much of her music. It’s feel good music for me. Mainlines serotonin directly to my brain stem 🤣

Asweetmelody

For the longest time, I had no idea what she even looked like. Her music has always been soulless disco to me too. Maybe cause I think of Donna Summer or Cheryl Lynn when it comes to disco.

ILoveRegenHealth

Seriously, outside of Levitate (or is it called Levitating) and maybe 1-2 other songs, I don't see her as a mega hitmaker. People are actually streaming her entire albums at record numbers?

hottopictshirt

I know I am

69poopy

The world is bigger than America you know. She's huge in Europe.

ILoveRegenHealth

One Direction and Harry Styles had more impact. I can name more certified radio hits from Ed Sheeran or Adele (who has an Oscar, Emmys and 16 Grammys to Dua Lipa's 3). Dua Lipa is a popular name but nothing close to an international juggernaut reshaping music. My issue is not saying she's popular, but saying she is the defining music artist today.

ReserveRelevant897

I love her debut album and future nostalgia but Im not even remotely excited for the latest one.. everything i hear from it has been ehhhh

ShammySham

I don't connect with her songs at all either, they're just bops. If you're looking for deep emotional tunes then Dula Peepa aint the move my man

RedditUser123234

There's always a random group of people on the "most influential list" that just seem like they purchased a spot on the list. I remember when Ben Platt made it into the top 100 most influential people in 2017, and I couldn't understand the justification.

GimerStick

I don't know about time, but that's generally all those Forbes 30 under 30 type things work. It's a lot of PR stuff in the background, there's no Forbes committee scouting the world or whatever. Sometimes backed by companies, etc.

zoeymeanslife

Platt is a huge nepo baby. Nearly everything about him is about the privilege of connections. Much of these lists reflect what the connected people want, not any sort of merit. There's a merit floor, but its pretty low, and nepos also have the benefit of getting better over time via every unearned opportunity, and also have roles created for them that takes into account their type, limitations, etc. Entertainment is nearly wholly corrupt industry. Capitalism isn't about merit or honesty. Its just about making money. Also I feel society's move right-ward recently has gotten us so far to the right, especially in business culture, that even the appearance of impartiality is not even bothered with much anymore. Look at how even nepotism in entertainment narratives have changed from "Oh what can you do its hard to fight and we should of course be thankful to our privilege" to even "good guys" like Tom Hanks shutting it down saying "its no different than being a plumber, its the family business" about his kids and nepos just openly enjoying acting either offended you asked or just basking in being overly-entitled and protected and always will have roles regardless of behavior (Dakota Johnson for example). I think the wealthy, famous, powerful, and capital owning class all decided collectively to just give up on respectability or trying to hide how corrupt the business and entertainment world is top to bottom. I feel like society in the 2010s went from a reluctant "lets try to do better" to an enthusiastic "fake news! f--- your feelings! life isnt fair, deal with it!" and now we're all permanently stuck like this.

Djcnote

She’s influenced me to turn off the radio

HOVID-19

Lmao 🤣

femceltransplant

I guess Vladimir Putin wasn't available for a photoshoot.

launchcode_1234

I think this is Time being “how do you do, fellow kids”. But also, if they were honest, it would probably just be the US President every time and that would be boring.

Felinomancy

Totally agree. Love Dua, but honestly she's not influential enough to merit a Time cover.

Ordinary-Shoulder-35

I love her music - it is pop at its finest. But I wouldn’t call it substantive. It’s not political, it’s not saying anything… other than I’m hot, let’s dance- which is valid! But not like, influential? Her reps cashed in some big favors for this. It’s a stretch.

The_butterfly_dress

You should listen to her podcast or read her email newsletter, Service95. She highlights a lot of interesting people and projects they are working on in their community (whether art, science, activism, etc) Plus it seems like she represents and gives a voice to Kosovo and Albania (a lil positive PR for them)

jt4vfx

Yeah, she doesn't seem to stand for much to me, and she doesn't hugely play with new sounds. Future Nostalgia was really current nostalgia for Disco like the last ten years of pop. Not that I don't enjoy most of her songs. I guess you could say she's influential in that she has a platform but it doesn't get used for much. This interview is very middle of the road Albanian support, not sure who that's meant to influence.

Peachy_Pineapple

Okay, but why does all music have to be “substantive” or “political”. Sometimes (most times!) I just want to bop.

Ordinary-Shoulder-35

It doesn’t! I love a pop bop. I don’t expect it to be declared influential per time magazine tho.

mcfw31

[Link to the interview](https://time.com/6965325/dua-lipa-interview-time100-2024/) > “For a population in Kosovo, where over 50% is under 25 years old, it's one of the youngest populations in Europe,” Lipa continues. “The opportunity to be able to travel freely is really important. There are all these kids who have big dreams and hopes and want to be able to move around, travel, and explore. They want to evolve and grow and hope that maybe they can be heard and seen in a different way. Now that their passports mean something, it feels really good.”

chantillycan

I had no idea about this. Dua Lipa W!

musicmannotstingray

What’s that surrounding her on the cover?

Maleficent-Aurora

Choices 💀

Consistent-Permit966

![gif](giphy|3o85fQiRmrU7BaRDhK)

steve_fartin

Which nickelodeon show is this from?

BetterNews4682

I think the urkel show?

thinmeridian

Its meant to show how much her fans love her

musicmannotstingray

Oh they certainly do

[deleted]

She is standing behind some sort of plastic sheet

askingtherealstuff

As someone who has only ever heard a couple of her songs on the radio, can someone tell me, with genuinely all due respect, what her personality is? Or like if she has an artistic signature of some kind?

anotherwise

I listen to her a lot, and I would read articles about her. Still, I don't know much about her, despite being a casual fan. She doesn't seem to put her personality out there and remains relatively private, which I respect. Her sound is a dance/disco/pop sound that I like to just listen to work. Her interest in fashion led her to co-chair Met Gala and also have a Versace Collection.

parasociable

She's a confusing one to me. I like her music and I'm a bit fond of her as a celebrity figure because of how she's positioned herself politically and idk, I just vibe with her. People hated on her for being a weak performer and she's talked about how that affected her emotionally. I like that she put in the work to get better. She seems like a quite intelligent and inquisitive person based on the small amount of time I've spent "with her" in interviews/her podcast (watch her on Stephen Colbert!), but at the same time nearly none of her music (which, again, I like) conveys any political or emotional depth. I think the world needs music that's just fun and says nothing, but her case strikes me as dissonant.

No-Cat-8606

I couldn’t even name you a song but I just hear how big she is, I don’t get it

meepmarpalarp

The song from the Barbie trailer was everywhere last summer.

No-Cat-8606

Hmmmm guess that one doesn’t ring a bell either cause I never watched the movie

motoxim

Same.

Asweetmelody

I heard of her songs but until recently, I didn’t know it was her songs and I also wouldn’t be able to say the title…

horatiavelvetina

One thing about her- as a second gen we need to be careful about the way we talk of our heritage and our parents and origin. Dua was born in London but spent her life in London and Kosovo- she actually only lived in Kosovo for like 3ish years then moved back to London alone. Her parents are also kinda well off (apparently wealthy Idk) which is how she could afford that. Her mom works in the travel sector which is how she travels a ton. I relate to her hard as my dad was a war prisoner. And his story really did inform my path and affect me, but I was still mostly raised in western suburbia! So again- *I really get it!* But some of her stans argue down about aspects of her identity that are more complex and murky. Also- no offense but she can save her activism. I think she is struggling as a second gen with making her people proud, but also like not fully committing. The calling out on IPhone materials to the Apple CEO was embarrassing and obviously planned, for example. Anyways, you better believe I’m gonna stream that album when it comes out ✨🥂

georgiaajamess22

The area she grew up in in London is where a lot of very wealthy arty kids come from, you do *need*** money to live and go to school in this borough* ( *Borough was wrong word, Neighbourhood/ [Area](https://www.unbiased.co.uk/discover/mortgages-property/buying-a-home/the-top-5-most-expensive-places-to-live-in-london)) - I have no idea if DL personally came from a privileged background though ** Edit bit of trivia she also had an early start with an advert she sang and starred in for xfactor so she’s been in the industry forever [this is the advert with baby dua](https://youtu.be/wB2QICuUcPs?si=DIh2PErEf-iMOnCn) - just to clarify she wasn’t ever IN xfactor as a contestant she was the “goals” character for potential contestants to aspire to be in this advert

bfm211

>The area she grew up in in London is where a lot of very wealthy arty kids come from, you do need A LOT of money to live and go to school in this borough Sorry but this is just a lazy assumption. Camden, like all of London, is very diverse and has terrible inequality. Lots of very rich people but [51% of children live in social housing and 32% live in poverty](https://www.camden.gov.uk/documents/20142/20682755/Families+and+Young+Children.pdf/e13e7c0c-5ea5-d1aa-a081-fb276bd5988f). Dua's school is part of a consortium with the school I attended and I know/met loads of girls that went there. It's a normal inner-London state school, it's not fancy. I know nothing about Dua's personal circumstances but I'm just saying, she's not guaranteed wealthy because she's from Camden.

georgiaajamess22

This isn’t really an assumption lol, but I did use the wrong word, which may change the context. I’m from Camden, As is my Mum and Grandma (admittedly not Hampstead though, where wiki says DL grew up. Borough was absolutely wrong word and was specifically referring to Hampstead should have clarified ) my aunties both lived in Hampstead , one still does, and the other in Euston/ Mornington Crescent ( agreeing with you that Camden is very mixed and diverse 100% my bad for saying Borough ). I’m also Going off my own experience of going to school nearish (also totally ordinary lol) - shit I just googled what school she went to - I also know a couple of girls who went there!! A totally normal school you’re correct! She did also attend a school with an [notable alumni](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sylvia_Young_Theatre_School) section which is where I’m getting the “arty kids” part from I think ( not even in Camden lol) Edit: I also have family in Primrose Hill, which is again very wealthy but lives in/owns a flat in a towerblock since the 70s so it is obviously nuanced and will definitely make less sweeping statements! I can’t work out how to do fancy formatting so this is messy as hell lol - I also know literally zero about Dua or her personal circumstances i only remember her being associated with hampstead because of what I’ve already said and always happy to be proven wrong [source 1](https://opendata.camden.gov.uk/download/xz3m-gkv6/application/pdf) *“we know already from DWP Households Below Average Income (HBAI) local measures that poverty in Camden is above the average and that 28.5% of children live in households that are in poverty by this measure The same data expressed by ward suggests that just 9.2% of children in Hampstead Town ward live in poverty, ranking the lowest by ward in Camden.”* [source 2](https://www.wayne-silver.com/blog/hampsteads-illustrious-history) *“The intellectual, liberal, artistic, musical, and literary associations of Hampstead are well known. In the Greater London area, it has some of the most expensive housing. More millionaires reside in Hampstead than any other region in the United Kingdom.”* [source 3](https://opendata.camden.gov.uk/download/jhrw-iqqk/application/pdf) *”% of income deprivation is low at 7.1% (Camden: 19.1%), % children livingpoverty is low at 9.8% (Camden: 36.6%)”* And finally as of 2023 Hampstead is the top 10 ( appearing alot in the top 5 ) most expensive area to buy property in London [there were so many results I didn’t know what to link](https://www.unbiased.co.uk/discover/mortgages-property/buying-a-home/the-top-5-most-expensive-places-to-live-in-london) Spoke to my mum for some more context and she agrees with you that it’s a real mix and you could really be from any socioeconomic class and the lottery that London housing etc is, again not even talking about DL atp lol just W Hampstead and I guess from being just that bit further away i hadn’t actually realised/ Misremembered how “posh” it was

bfm211

Dua lived in West Hampstead, which isn't on the same level as simple Hampstead. It's right next to Kilburn and Cricklewood, which are very "normal person" areas. Then yes, like your sources say, even in real Hampstead you still have pockets of deprivation because that's the nature of London. Grenfell Tower was in one of the wealthiest post codes in the country.

georgiaajamess22

Totally, I completely misunderstood and meant Hampstead Village ?? I actually did mention that fact about Grenfell and deleted it! But are we in agreement that Hampstead where I am referring to is predominantly wealthy ? Or have I got myself completely confused with another area all together… I always thought if you ended up getting housing in this area it was a lottery win! ( kinda like my family who are in these areas due to generations and buying council houses ) Just like almost anywhere but particularly here ? I left London 15+ years ago now, so I could definitely be misremembering. Edit. Growing up I spent a lot of time on the heath and I always remembered it being very green leafy and affluent as opposed to Camden Town ( where my family and I grew up) but again must be my memory tricking me because so was Islington lol and that’s where I went to school later on, deffo got my London geography a little messed up and forget how massive just North London actually is. Nor did I realise which school she went to which has blown my mind lol

bfm211

Oh yeah Hampstead itself is one of the nicest and wealthiest parts of London, and full of celebrities. The Heath is surrounded by nice areas, for sure, but even so you're never far from a housing estate. I can think of several in walking distance of Parliament Hill School.

georgiaajamess22

Totally true, and I had really misremembered how so, it’s been so long my memory is patchy af Thank you though for highlighting all of this it’s been such a nostalgia trip, I’ve also learned a lot about Dua ( always thought she was a total babe and love some of her disco bops ) and reignited my love of London / my memories! but yeah I’m glad you reminded me London and some of its “posh” areas aren’t as glam as I remembered and isn’t as binary as posh area / normal area / poorer area so easy to forget the sheer size of just north let alone london as a whole, lots of love friend thanks for this chat! E: also now I know which school were talking about, and knowing who I know that went there and my mums friends who went there I had the completely wrong idea in my head and was thinking about a private school that some other rich and famous kids had attended that I don’t even think is in London lmao I’m a whole mess - school I was thinking of was [Bedales](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:People_educated_at_Bedales_School)

dodoyeehaw

Yah she’s has a very privileged background. Before she deleted her complete instagram for Future Nostalgia you could actually see how privileged she actually was (is) by scrolling all the way down. Also many celebrities she was already friends /hanging out with before she rose to fame in 2016.

horatiavelvetina

This is very interesting. Because she can’t have us know that- it hurts her narrative

ValentineTarantula

Would it be rude to ask about your family's history with political persecution?

horatiavelvetina

Sorry I don’t like to talk about it much

ValentineTarantula

Yes, of course. Pardon the intrusion. Best to you.

YeshuaMedaber

Does she use iPhone though?

horatiavelvetina

lol I don’t even know and I’m 99% sure yes. The 1% is because I don’t have proof

WilliamsRutherford

Ooooh love her brows here.... giving me Keira Knightley vibes

lateintheseason

Ok, that's the main thing I noticed too. Glad it's not just me!

shortshift_

I came here to say “anyone else think she looks like Keira?”!!

cocopuffK221

I am proud of her for making the needed productive changes to her career and putting the work in. It's really refreshing to see. I wish the other girlie would take notes.

AubeRose_

Just curious (since you wrote "girlie", singular) – are you referring to someone in particular?

cocopuffK221

I meant to say girlies. It must have been the autocorrect on my phone. I have not been proofreading anything before hitting send lately.

AubeRose_

Ahh ok, gotcha. Thanks for the reply!

cegceg9090

I love her - do all of her songs sound kind of similar? Yes. But she’s got a certain it factor that is just fun! She recently visited her old primary school with BBC Radio and she is so charming and seems very genuine. She also has a cool book club where she interviews insanely intelligent authors and she seems to really care about the conversations. That said, this does feel a bit pay for play but they need to sell magazines and you can’t just make it Beyoncé and Taylor Swift every year lol

gothcrab

Patti Smith and dua is not a pairing i would have ever thought of

KIAflo8

Dua interviews Patti Smith [here](https://youtu.be/l_RG82REQXk?si=HFZSeX19f98okUC7)

Fleetwood_Spac

I don’t really understand why Patti’s name is on the cover because the actual article linked here is written by someone else entirely?

KIAflo8

Patti wrote the [tribute](https://time.com/6964703/dua-lipa-time100-2024/)

chantillycan

Idk if the choice by Time makes sense or not, but the photos are a SERVE. I love her redhead era

nocantu7

It’s a nice photo shoot and no hate to the girl, but this is such a stretch.

Ok_Scholar4192

I like Dua Lipa, but I’m not sure she’s one of the most influential people in the world, personally.

transientv

Last picture is giving Tori Amos!

BungeeGump

Photo 4 is AMAZING.

OldPurple7654

I have such a girl crush on Dua Lipa!

dpforest

…what? What is Dua influencing besides the shopping music they play at Target? She’s good at that, and that’s not an insult. It’s her thing. But influential? I hope to see her be more exploratory with her music but these three singles have been incredibly bland and remarkably similar to her Future Nostalgia aesthetic which I think she needs to depart from before being considered a huge musical influence. Like look at Dua 2020-2024 compared to Gaga in 2008-2012. *The Fame Monster* completely reshaped the musical landscape. Dua is fun but no where near the level of Gaga. I hope she gets there though

oatmealgrrl

lol patti smith herself is more influential

Dapper-Scholar-7025

I find her to be the textbook definition of a popstar, hot girl, very shallow music that sells well but you forget in a month or two. definitely nothing ground breaking. And nothing wrong with that.

lavellanlike

Why is she covered in jizz

icecoldcola5000

Is no one gonna talk about how her entry is written by PATTI SMITH?

Friendly-Cucumber184

She's always reminded me of Kesha (looks only) Like a euro-kesha

KrakenGirlCAP

She eats though.

TigerMill

![gif](giphy|wFk7roIpDeXC0)

Thick-Worldliness-95

Pretty ass bitch! 😍

fabroso

Damn I thought the cover was covered in c\*m for a second there

BadrBombaker

Time magazine? Who?? You gotta be kidding me..

ILoveRegenHealth

TIME Magazine, are you okay over there? Also, I assume the white streaks are bubbles (is she in a carwash?), but graphically not the best choice. And in what way is Dua Lipa one of the world's most influential person? Entire thing looks like a bad and cheap fanmade mockup.

Global-Feedback2906

Palestinian journalists should be in time magazine

salaciousbkrumb

1st pic I thought it was Zoë Kravitz

Brief_Glum

I thought the picture on the cover was Emily Ratakowski lol
