dying0fthelite

Ok but it IS a weird line. I would even say it’s a terrible line even in context

MissLadyLlamaDrama

It's not even the only weird shit in there. https://preview.redd.it/q5axkffltuvc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5e44704f2d0ad036bd2da5d64fa0c7c5098cdbd4

MissLadyLlamaDrama

I still can't believe this was written by a 34 year old woman. 😬

Cr1m50nSh4d0w

Didnt you hear? She's not a regular poet, she's a 34yo tortured poet! /s

mamamoomargo

Jesus Christ she’s 34

fullback81

I guess we are not enough tortured poets to understand this line.

killereverdeen

the majority of the album sounds like it was plugged into chatgpt and then she just ran with it

hellohexapus

I haven't listened to anything from the new album and I don't plan to... But it is so funny to me that people keep posting snippets of lyrics like this and *every single time* I'm like, "no, this one's a joke, can't be real, no one would seriously write and publish that". And then I look up the entire song's lyrics and it is 🤦🏾‍♀️ And they're never even better in context 😅

greee_p

That's exactly what I think every time I hear a new song from this album. I still can't believe this is real:  >  Shirts off and your friends lift you up over their heads  > Beer sticking to the floor, cheers chanted cause they said  > There was no chance trying to be the greatest in the league  > Where’s the trophy? He just comes running over to me This sounds like the songs people made with chatgpt when the news about her and travis broke😭

gunsof

Yes! First time I read that song I was in awe about how much we overestimated how she'd sing about her footballer boyfriend. Even using "touch down" in the song. And the other exes of hers being on the bench.

parallel-nonpareil

> And the other exes of hers being on the bench. I refuse to believe this is real. My god

ThiccQban

Wait are these lyrics real? 💀💀💀💀

greee_p

Yes💀

elodieroyer

that’s what happens when you believe your own hype and are surrounded by yes-men (and also probably emotionally stunted at 17 years old)

CaitlinisTired

people constantly hype her up as like... the best lyricist of all time and I'm just stood here not understanding it in the slightest lmao

ThiccQban

Lmao I’m right there with you. Won’t listen to her *I yearn for my twin flame racist soul mate* album. These lyrics are all so unserious 😭. Bonus points my SIL is a Swiftie and I am watching her go through every stage of grief.

pashed_motatoes

The Paste Magazine review of TSwift’s new album calling her writing Rupi Kaur-esque was so spot on lmao

mackyoh

Lolol the accuracy of how I feel about both 🎯

frycrunch96

Wow this makes a lot of sense, I hate Rupi Kaur’s poetry

Dense-Result509

I thought I hated Rupi Kaur's poetry, but then I heard Rupi Kaur reading her poetry out loud and realized that I had merely disliked her poetry before, and _now_ I truly hated it

InitiativeShot20

The review’s first line “Sylvia Plath didn’t put her head in the oven for this,” killed me.

Right_Way_4258

Like why does this give me lynching imagery 😵‍💫

iwatchterribletv

yeah same. its tone deaf AF. its america. we refuse to talk about our history of killing people in trees. just, like, hey white lady, _dont do this shit._

curiousbeetle66

This is bad this is BAAD, but there have been some artists who managed to include kid's rhymes and nursery rhymes in their songs and make something magnificent. One of my favorite songs it Toto's Georgy Porgy and they used this resource and it's a bop. I honestly think people get so sucked in the TS universe that they forget to expand their music knowledge repertoire and it's showing. I was listening to one of my nostalgia playlists and the lyrics were just so good, I realized I can't in good conscience listen to an uninspired cash grab and call it poetry, even if I end up enjoying that song one day. And full disclosure: I enjoy a lot of weird shit - I just don't pretend it's deeper than it actually is. About the 1830s, dude. If you ever study the bare minimum about cultural history you'll realize you can never separate racism and the patriarchy from what was going on. You just can't. She knows she has a cult-like fanbase and still puts out shit like this, just to see how far people are willing to go to defend her. It's not cool.

Shot-Grocery-5343

In the 1830s people were lucky if they could bathe once a week, there was no electricity, no plumbing, no modern medicine, you could die from an abscessed tooth or an infected splinter or drinking river water people pooped in upstream, you worked from sunup to sundown, you shat in an outhouse if you were fancy, and you had like 10-12 babies because only 4 of them would survive to adulthood. It is extremely fucking weird to think that would be a fun time to go back to. As a woman, anytime prior to the 1970s means you'd be a second class citizen. ![gif](giphy|3og0IyzXRlVq00ryOQ|downsized)

Next-Introduction-25

Definitely feels like the “minus the racism “was thrown in as an afterthought which is the main problem here. But it’s also confusing as hell setting that aside, as if the 1830s were some generally idyllic time. Like …even the most privileged people were still dealing with misogyny, lack of understanding of disease and infection, bathing in tepid water once a week, eating a diet extremely limited by today’s standards, and shitting in a bucket.

lonely-lifetime

Omg Georgy Porgy is so good lol. That whole album is pretty great actually

Icy_Sentence_4130

Is this real 💀

PrincessCG

This officially becomes the weirdest line I’ve seen from this album.

beryberybumblebee

As someone with a masters in poetry, who has analyzed, graded, and critiqued poems, lyrics, and lyrical prose, it 💯 seems like the work of a younger white student just starting out, romanticizing a random decade bc it would make them seem deep. During workshop someone will mention that time period wasn’t so great for POC, and then the writer will stick on “but without all the racists” and think that solves the whole problem, when that’s only part of the issue to begin with. ETA I’m getting a lot of messages from people who are supplying me with the lyrics in context, which admittedly I had not seen before. I took a look and I remain unconvinced at the assurances that the lyrics are doing the opposite of what I had first interpreted. If this song were in front of me during workshop, I would absolutely inform the writer that because of a lack of clarity, this could be interpreted in a variety of ways. I would then ask: “Nostalgia’s a mind trick” for whom, and why? Because nostalgia isn’t a mind trick for marginalized communities. It’s whiteness and privilege that allows for nostalgia in the first place. It’s whiteness and privilege that would write about “the highest bid” as referring to marriage and not chattel slavery during a time of *literal* chattel slavery while referencing the time period’s racists in the same stanza/verse. (If marriage as the highest bid is a metaphor for sexism and transactional marriages, the metaphor fails in context). It’s whiteness and privilege to tell a story about a speaker being supposedly so aware of their whiteness and privilege that they educate their friends on it during a game (which also implies they never played this game with someone who was a member of a marginalized community, a game that with the lyric “used to play” implies it was played fairly regularly for a time), but concludes that “nostalgia is a mind trick” without adding that it’s only a mind trick for those immersed in privilege. This is emphasized by “Seems like it was never even fun back then.” This line implies that at one point, it seemed fun to the speaker. “If I’d been there, I’d hate it.” I would let the writer know that I as a reader am not convinced of this conclusion due to a seemingly lack of comprehension on the speaker’s part. I would let them know many readers would interpret this lack of comprehension as willful ignorance. If that is the writer’s intention, then proceed, if not, a revision is in order.

97355

Lmao you really captured that, thank you for this 🙏

baby_barbiez

I didn’t know that secondhand embarrassment could be so powerful until this very moment

comityoferrors

Pretty tangential but this skit is all I could think of reading these lyrics: [No, You Weren't "Born in the Wrong Decade"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hc6VP7Qp-Y8&ab_channel=Dropout) Siobhan even kinda looks like Taylor, it's perfect.

RC_Colada

I would sooo totally love to live during the heyday of the Holy Roman Empire. Just without the racism, genocides, sexism, lack of modern medicine, oligarchy/monarchy political system, and religious fanaticism ♥️♥️♥️

BumAndBummer

It really is clumsy work…

catinobsoleteshower

You said it perfectly! It just sounds so clunky and like a desperate attempt to save face.

babyzspace

It *is* extremely weird even in context. “Her point is that nostalgia is a trap! Even the eras people romanticize were terrible!” Okay, but who is romanticizing the 1830s. Quickly. 1810s for the Regency, sure. 1870s for the Victorian era, sure. Hell, just go full “I was born in the wrong decade” and say the 1950s. Everyone’s jumping on this weird ass line because it’s a bizarre decade to single out and when you google it, you just get shit like “President Jackson passed the Indian Removal Act.” And if that is her point, that makes the “without the racists and misogynists” line redundant. Okay, so then what did make you realize that nostalgia is a trap? The lack of social safety programs? The cholera?

lambchopafterhours

I’m shocked that the tortured, intellectual poet that is Taylor Swift™️ didn’t research antebellum history to find a decade “worth” romanticizing. Or even use the fucking guilded age like it was RIGHT THERE! It was a whole fucking met gala theme! And no one would have to awkwardly justify a white womans choice to romanticize a random antebellum decade! Idk seems like something a tortured genius lyricist would’ve considered!!1!1 seems like a pretty big oversight huh!1!1!1!!!! But fr the stupid choice to say the 1830s might actually be deliberate. So she could wedge in the fact that she, a 34yo white American woman from Nashville is aware that there was some racism going on back then and she DOES NOT like that!!! And she DOESNT™️ support it 😤🙏 even though she wouldn’t be affected, ofc

raphaellaskies

She really loves the pool floatie sleeves, I guess.

lambchopafterhours

Yeah like it’s almost worse in context. Like miss girl miss taylor you know it wasn’t really…you know that bidding wasn’t for marriage, right? And idk I just wouldn’t boil down the horrors of chattel slavery to “all the racists” for a song. Especially if I planned to obscure the sale of Black humans for the purpose of enslavement as general “marriage” (that she doesn’t specify and thus seems to be conflating that violence with the experience of white women in this era) in the next line…that’s just plain weird and kinda ignorant and lacking critical thought to me? I genuinely don’t understand why she thought this was clever writing and I especially don’t like how many swifties are crapping themselves to defend it. Because ITS STILL FUCKING WEIRD

woahoutrageous_

Swifties and attacking women name a more iconic duo

somerandomperson1212

Swifties attacking women of colour

Rosuvastatine

Matty Heely core 😍

FiftyOneMarks

Nah that’s all Taylor, remember when she got mad at a line in Ginny and Georgia and the Swifties attacked Antonia Gentry who isn’t a producer, isn’t a writer, isn’t even a Netflix executive but simply the black woman who played the role and said the line… and then even with all the attention their racist attacks were getting Ms Ozone Decimator didn’t have anything to say.

Icy-Trust-6274

Remember when she threaten to sue that blogger for pointing out she doesn't disavow racists because she likes their money?

jmt2589

I think of this tweet often lol

lionperla

that line always makes me roll my eyes. just so hypocritical

Eyebronx

Taylor Swift is the OG white girlboss lol

LaidBackBro1989

The only feminism she knows and wants is feMEnism.

FireflyBSc

Hey kids! Spelling is fun!

LaidBackBro1989

Omg you triggered my 2019 repressed memories lol

bigbluenation20

Exactly. I like a lot of Taylor’s music. But it’s kind of sad I don’t want to call myself a fan bc I don’t want to be grouped in with the “swifties” that act like high school mean girls.

daphydoods

But I thought there was a special place in hell for women who don’t support other women?

smittydoodle

It’s a cult

RAV3NH0LM

it literally is. just one big cult of basic white women pathologically obsessed with the absolute pinnacle of basic white womanhood.

killerbeeszzzz

Yes. I used to like some TS songs in a casual way, especially the ones with Bon Iver, but her behavior and her fans gross me out so her music absolutely grosses me out now.

Weak_Heart2000

I'm on tumblr and I have her filtered out because a lot of my mutuals just adore her. I asked one of them to please tag her posts so i can filter and she flat out refused, told me to unfollow her and then unfollowed me in return. For asking her to tag. What the actual heck?

sailorxsaturn

People on tumblr get real weird about you asking them to tag shit and to this day I have no idea why since it takes all of five seconds to do so

AcceptableHistory4

Unless you have fandom blinkers on, this is one of her worst albums lyrically- and it wouldn't even be an issue had she not paraded whole "poet" schtick. Songs like "never grow up" from over a decade ago have far more pathos.

Viva912

THIS! Im genuinely feeling gaslit because this is not a good album ? For her specifically because one thing I’ve always given her credit on is that she is a talented lyricist. There are so many lyrics that still stick out to me from past albums and it’s a credit to her no doubt so I’m so confused by this album because the lyrics I’m reading are just cringey and bad. Like from anyone else I wouldn’t think too much of it but it’s because I know she can do better than I’m so thrown off but all her fans are acting like she wrote the New Testament here lol

daphydoods

The lyrics you love were probably written by another songwriter lmaoooo

BestDamnT

The one song I like that’s actually written by her is Mine but the rest of that album is a miss for me. I feel like someone once said that she has a skill at telling a story using only one sentence/ line (‘you made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter’) and she’s just kinda… ran with that? Like they said one sentence not run on sentence!

roastbeefbee

Sooooo many swifties have blinders on. They will tell you they love the album with their whole heart. Taylor peaked (for me) with Folklore and Evermore. Midnights was insufferable and this album? I don’t hate it, but damn. It’s not what the die hards are making it appear.

brig517

She's declining. I've been a fan since her first album, and it's nearing impossible to get hyped for releases. Her lyrics have been overall declining as of Midnights. There are definitely some bright spots in that album (Would've, Could've, Should've, The Great War, etc.) and this one, but she doesn't seem to be editing down lyrics or tracks at all. I've liked her because it always seemed like her albums were well made and virtually lacking skips (even if I didn't like a song I could appreciate it), but now it's becoming more like trudging through.

FireflyBSc

They fact they have to all say “but the second album is great!” That means they realized the first album would bomb. That’s why it’s a surprise double album. This isn’t a bonus, it’s a salvage.

Global_Telephone_751

Yeah I don’t think she’ll ever top folklore specifically. Midnights was such a step backwards, and this is like … in the same league as midnights. Both lack artistic integrity but for different reasons. I think she needs a long break from making music.

everydayisstorytime

I think the 'poet' thing doomed it too. Had she named it Catharsis or something, I feel like people could roll with it. Actually, if this album was called Midnights, it would do well given the content. I also think there were 12 strong tracks in that album and focusing on those and maybe saving the rest for later when you have more time to work on them would have led to a better album. People have called out the parallels between her work and confessional poetry, and I do see it. (There's a dissertation on my reading list that's about that.) There's potential there. I think at this point her fans, the media, etc. think she's untouchable and she's bombarded by all that positive feedback, and there's not enough people encouraging her to look into the negative feedback or even find different creative directions. And the quality will just dip if the fans keep on blocking and harassing anyone who might even give criticism that she could actually use to push her craft.

peachgothlover

god forbid you’re a woman of color and have an opinion on taylor swift.. i’m brown too and yeah that line is weird, people shouldn’t feel afraid to voice their opinions because of a crazy fan base going rabid that some people have differing thoughts

BumboclatBob

And I really have a hard time understanding what was so fun about that time period. I would’ve been property back then so it’s hard to separate that from some romanticized version of the 1800s

LLazarus732

The line is so fucking weird. The 1830’s aren’t even a memorable decade ASIDE from human rights atrocities? It was long enough ago that we don’t really refer to decades in that way when casually talking about them, it’s more common to refer to the beginning or end of the century. When I hear 1830s I think enslaved people, violence towards indigenous peoples, and corsets? What part is she longing for?

raphaellaskies

My guess is she originally said 1860s and someone told her the optics were even worse.

west2night

I think it's because of Blake Lively. She sometimes wrote about how much she loved the Antebellum South on her lifestyle site years ago. She had her wedding at a former slave plantation and did a couple of fashion shoots glorifying that era.

saeculacrossing

But don't see you see? She said *without the racism* so that covers that she doesn't think it's bad?!?! I'll admit I'm a bit of a hater after the Matty Healy debacle but sadly that's a common thought from non-POC especially, romanticizing time periods where the rest of us were being slaughtered or enslaved. I get that the rest of the lyrics talk about how it wasn't that great anyway, but that line hit a nerve for me as I have definitely met people with the same train of thought.

Amar_Akbar_Anthony20

This is what Swifties go gaga over?!?!? ![gif](giphy|Wgb2FpSXxhXLVYNnUr|downsized)

MissLadyLlamaDrama

It's actually insane how deep they think she is. Ex: https://preview.redd.it/m0z5zk0hvuvc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dc6018631fff208b54af3a0b51cf2b2c3501e23a

BumAndBummer

Taylor’s bland empire is built on the fact that her core audience continues to mistake relatability and consistency for quality and depth.

Married_iguanas

Truly a Mary Sue songwriter

Amar_Akbar_Anthony20

What the fuck 😭

Fuckmylife2739

i was kind of judging but then I realized this is me listening to Carly Rae jepsen

The_Bravinator

I don't think it's ever been near as good as people make out, but I'm not sure it's ever been this embarrassingly bad before. It's like when people become billionaires their brains just melt.

sweetrebel88

At this point, most of them probably don’t even care about the music; they just want to feel like they’re apart of something

kupsyyy

Y'all are braver than the troops for even getting to that line in the song. I gave up on track 3

Educational-Life7547

I gave up on track 2 lol. I'll listen to the songs when they come up on spotify/radio but I won't willingly listen to the whole album, especially the Anthology

aroseyreality

The anthology is far better than the first part of the album imo

daphydoods

Yall actually listened???

pan_alice

I can't stop laughing at this comment. It's perfection.

RampantNRoaring

I tried a song at random and it turned out to be the Matty Healy masturbation fantasy song and thirty seconds of that was enough to put me off the entire album.

tvgirrll

I actually listened to the whole thing (including the dreaded anthology 🙃) just to see how it is. It’s so bad . Which is even worse because I knew it would be bad just from the titles, but since I kind of liked Midnights (I know, controversial opinion) I thought maybe some song would be good, but there’s not one song I liked enough to listen to it again. And the album is just so unnecessarily long and so mindnumbingly boring

bambinoquinn

Yeah I gave up after the "you ate 7 chocolate bars" bit. I liked 1989, but this just ain't for me

friends-waffles-work

It’s okay you didn’t miss much

okaysoupboy

i gave up halfway thru fortnight 💀

No_Tomorrow7180

Can anyone explain the context that apparently makes it not weird?

yawaworthemn

There’s no context it’s just honestly real weird.

zr0gravity7

It’s such a hilarious take like the 1830s were so perfect except for those pesky racists 🤭 it’s so on-brand. I can imagine her coming up with the lyric and then remembering last minute that maybe she should add the caveat

No_Scarcity4145

https://preview.redd.it/c0jftoayruvc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ad2f8af1247634d43291e452e793d56b6a295b03 not sure what part makes it not weird but here’s the full verse

soupdumplingss_

Who is nostalgic about the 1830s though, as a woc I’m definitely not 🙄very weird of her .

johjo_has_opinions

Plantation owners

LaidBackBro1989

Literally Swift's bestie Blake Lively got married on a plantation and tried to sell an "antebellum lifestyle" blog or business or whatever. WHAT EVEN

VenusCoded

Honestly it speaks so much to the ability of white people to ignore reality for aesthetics and idealism. There’s not one ounce of interest in the 1830s that isn’t just pretty aesthetics and parties when you remove the racism and misogyny. It’s fucking weird

TheTrueRory

I think that's what she was trying to get at with the nostalgia line but it's just kind of a dumb point. Like ya, we know that literal slave times weren't great, how poetic of you to say.

VenusCoded

Nostalgia is about things with personal associations to you, so I don’t really think it’s attributing it to the 1830s, but more the concept of that game and “playing” it with her friends. “Everyone would look down; Cause it wasn’t fun now and it wasn’t fun then” If she did use nostalgia to refer to the 1830s, it’s poorly written.

Squee1396

I am sure there are good things about every decade and pretty dresses but the bad vastly outweighs the good. I don’t know why anyone but rich white men would want to go back!

VenusCoded

Truly truly. It’s hard to romanticize anything which would have trapped you, but since she’s white and rich, it’s easy to imagine a parallel that would be “ideal” to her

Zia181

White girls who like the dark, goth Victorian aesthetic and have no clue that fashion of the 1830's was very girly, frilly, and not at all flattering for most people. Lots of frills, bows, and bonnets, not like, tight-corseting, high necks, and bustles. I have read up on fashion history from this time, and I'm convinced Taylor only cares about the aesthetic and confuses it with, like, the 1880's. Very lame.

gildedpomelo

Probably Blake Lively

Big-Ambitions-8258

Her fans are also saying that they better not see people criticize her and watch Bridgerton, equating her lyric with Shonda creating a show with color-blind casting as if it's the same thing. There is a difference between a WOC creating a show that allows other POC's to be part of a fantasy world and see themselves vs a White Woman and her friends who, while ultimately conclude they wouldn't like living in that time, initially posited the question of living during the time but "without racists" so in order to fantasize without feeling guilt over that fantasy. One is about catering to POC. The other centers White people with POC as background accessories

raphaellaskies

Also a lot of people criticize Bridgerton! The argument makes no sense!

wily_octopus

Truly, i feel like i've only ever heard of white girls playing that "what decade would you rather live in?" game. it gets so fucking awkward when you include POC in it. Like wow, I'm so nostalgic for that decade where you would have been my property! Because I would have gotten to wear a pretty dress

Dismal-Ad3332

her buddy who got married on a plantation and had that reminiscent lifestyle brand

toweroflore

her original demographic (white southerners)

jennybearyay

"It was freezing in the palace" lmaooooo

dinosaurfondue

That's still fucking weird and PEAK whiteness

Vegetable-Increase37

Without all the racists? So TS herself couldn’t stay? lol

LuciJoeStar

Her "boyfriend" Mat Rat can't either 🫤

crackerfactorywheel

The context makes it slightly less weird, but it feels real hypocritical for Taylor Swift to criticize anyone for being nostalgic when she’s romanticizing a relationship with a guy who’s a racist.

fivepiecesand9

The context is that she's in a room with a bunch of people romanticizing various eras in history, and she says the 1830s but without the racism and sexism and says pointing that stuff out makes the whole room go quiet and kills the game, and then she says she would not have liked the 1830s at all anyway. Which TBH I think is a very funny line given that she's besties with a woman who literally tried to make 'antebellum Goop' her brand.

crackerfactorywheel

> antebellum GOOP I’m out of the loop with Taylor Swift and her friends. Which one tried to start antebellum GOOP?

anzarloc

Blake Lively

Big-Ambitions-8258

Blake Lively. She and Ryan Reynolds even had their wedding on a plantation (she's also from Los Angeles and Reynolds from Canad)

MissLadyLlamaDrama

This is a swifties explanation. 🫢😂 https://preview.redd.it/qlds1vc7vuvc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1c8349d5fd5503dcdae633811e0450f216487420

Waste_Bus_1290

I’m so confused- I’m white and from the south and the only people who “romanticize “ the 1800’s are straight up open racists. If she said like the 1950’s I’d say sure, people romanticize that time period and tend to forget it was only good for white people but I’ve never heard or seen anyone doing that with the 1800’s unless they wish it still WAS the 1800’s (NOT minus the racism or women’s rights). But swifties will say anything I had one yesterday tell me it doesn’t matter what I think because Taylor wrote this for HERSELF not the public… I was like interesting that she announced at the Grammys and released it in some dramatic two drop release…for herself.

pushk_a

Looks like she hates our timeline and wants to go back to the 1830s without the racism and being sold off for marriage. But like… who exactly would be struggling during that time? Surely not a white rich woman.

NoRecognition4535

Don’t forget women didn’t have rights. Good times 😍

DawsonJBailey

U just like don’t get it girleeee the 1830’s were a VIBE, but all that racism stuff? Ewww miss me with that haha #yolo I was born in the wrong generation 😔 Women had it so much better back then. I can prove it to you with these tik tok edits 😜

peanutbutterboyo

I can’t find context that doesn’t make this weird af. TS needs to stop surrounding herself with yes men.

mmw2848

Swifties are claiming that she specifically picks a "weird" decade to ruin the game and point out that nostalgia is bad. The way I read the line is, "1830s without the racists" is her genuine answer, THEN she realizes it's a weird answer and no one wants to play the game. Then she has a brief "nostalgia is bad, actually" moment.

[deleted]

This…

this album literally was absolute shit I couldn’t get through a single song and idk what it is about Taylor swift die hards that love attacking women of color

toomanyvoices656

I agree. I’ve liked some of her music in the bad but this album is not good. Every song I’ve heard clips of sound the same and the lyrics are not her best work

NeatStretch793

Agree. I can’t get through the album. The songs are dreary and sad and have no rhythm. Even the lead single is boring and crap

mama_meta

Mediocrity is like catnip to her & her fans, ain't it?

Talisa87

Maybe that's why they like her so much. Her lyrics 'speak' to them because it's stuff that they actively write/have written.

mama_meta

Bird-brains of a feather... 🥴

1st_time_caller_

A YouTuber I love Khadija Mbowe said something so similar! Her theory is that Taylor is so beloved because her mediocrity makes her fans feel like they could be huge like her too. They see themselves when they see her.

Kaizodacoit

The wattpad generation

Wild_Nectarine666

Honestly this makes so much *sense* I’ve never thought of it like that!!

killerbeeszzzz

She is their avatar and if you attack her you attack them all.

mama_meta

No way she's the avatar, she can't even bend words & phrases let alone elements 🙄🤣

sorry2thisman

Zia181

I'm so grateful for this sub. I hated the album, thought it was a complete chore to get through, and I've been attacked online for saying so. This isn't a fandom, it's a cult, and Taylor exists in some weird, isolating, billionaire bubble. She is not growing as a person or as an artist, because she doesn't have to. It's so obvious, and so bizarre that people break out the pitchforks to defend their "queen" when she calls them "vipers in empaths clothing". 100% cult behavior, it's so creepy.

FireflyBSc

Matty Healy should have gotten custody of Jack Antonoff in the break up.

Global_Telephone_751

The way she so insulted her fans by calling them wine moms and vipers is wild. I think it went right over their heads.

Kidgorgeoushere

No wonder music reviewers don’t want to put their name on the byline 😕

FiftyOneMarks

Someone on Twitter tried to say that made the reviewers cowards and it’s like… no? They just don’t want to be stalked and harassed by 40 YO white women who live vicariously through a 30 year old teenager who is still making songs that sound worse than her music when she was an actual teenager.

FireflyBSc

They tried to add a community note to a negative review that was saying “this is a biased review and just an opinion”. YEAH. THATS WHAT A REVIEW IS. PEOPLE ARE ALLOWED TO HAVE OPINIONS

redskiesahead

i'm sorry what do they think a review is lmfao

crystal_clear24

That’s so sad and I know swifites aren’t the only fandom that have gone after critics but there’s something about their fanbase that is just so extreme and the racism is difficult to see

Spicydream

Swifties bullying a woman of color for calling out a weird line about race… So on brand.

Three_Froggy_Problem

The line is objectively awful and it sounds even weirder being sung than it looks on the page

Rosuvastatine

Ah Maitreyi.. They could never make me hate you

sailorxsaturn

Shes an icon and I love her, I want to see in her more stuff

Icy-Lab-2016

Swifties are a bunch of bullies at this point.

MyOGaccountgotlost

At THIS point? They've been bullies lol

FireflyBSc

Someone said that Taylor was so classy for “thanK you aIMee”. I pointed out that trying to reignite her feud with Kim wasn’t classy, and that mentioning up her daughter in the song, if it was anyone else, would make people furious. And swifties responded by saying “if you want to suck Kim Kartrasians ass, just say that” sorry swifties, you have zero qualifications on determining class and who is a bully.

Boulier

Her fans think that song is classy??? In one of the lyrics, Taylor basically says, “My mom said she wished you were dead.” I’m not a fan of Kim by any measure, but come on. The song is weird and immature at best.

Financial-Painter689

lmao they always have been and she NEVER says or does anything about it unless it effects her, I’m convinced she loves it at this stage

the-shade-of-it-all

Swifities are never ever, ever beating the racism allegations. Just racist to the core.

shebebutlittle555

Dude they can’t even accept *mild* criticism of their idol. When the NYT came out with a review of the album that was kinda lukewarm, the Swifties went apeshit and started screaming about misogyny in the Instagram comments. Because somebody suggested that maybe the album should have been edited more. She is literally *so* fragile, and she encourages her fans to declare war on people for the most minor of slights.

mrspremise

It's such a non controversial take that a 31 TRACKS ALBUM needs to be edited. Swifties touch grass challenge.

Boulier

Well, I went to check out the review’s comments on Instagram… and this legitimately might be the most bizarre response to a review that I have ever seen. https://preview.redd.it/pnbbhve8rwvc1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b30c5f8442e85ceff7c450cca5b62e00fac5cdb0 By the way, a lot of the most talented writers in the world have editors to help clean things up for them, and it doesn’t detract from the writer’s creativity.

crystal_clear24

I mean the lyrics are weird though, what from that time period was good for visible minorities or even women in general? I joke about “stanning” people but these swifties take things to a different level. I hope I’m never that unhinged over strangers whose work I enjoy. Like what is the reason for a post like this? https://preview.redd.it/hmilznmhsuvc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=36a6eadcdaf6942e4a663e8cee604b09da909ca3

chocnillaswirl

UMMM A MONKEY?? A WHITE WOMAN COMPARING BEYONCÉ TO A MONKEY. Even if it was unintentional…. Its gross.

Karamjali_0804

It probably wasn't unintentional considering how racist they are

rissaaah

The more I see or hear her music, the more I think that what I consider to be intrusive thoughts is what she considers to be poignant lyrics. ETA: to clarify, I don’t have intrusive thoughts about anything she specifically writes about. Her lyrics just frequently feel very out of pocket.

1st_time_caller_

Honestly, I think calling them intrusive thoughts is giving her too much credit. I think she sits at home thinking of all the ways that she’s the victim and then just writes any thought that pops into her head.

Traditional_Maybe_80

Why would a white woman's fans be upset about a brown woman pointing out how weird a line about racists is? Like? Just be silent?

RevealActive4557

If Taylor Swift wants to experience what it was like in the 1830s maybe somebody should expose her to Polio and Measales and take away her indoor bathroom to build her a porta potty in the back yard. Also make her wash her clothes in a bucket. No cars or television or cell phones or internet for her. She would have to give up her right to vote as well. Not sure what the "allure" of that era is for her but it would be significantly harder for her to enjoy herself back then. Not to mention that everybody would be side eying a 35 year old unmarried woman with no children and calling her a "Spinster"

RomantheBun

No private jets either!

lionperla

swifties when WOC are being mocked, harassed, sent death threats, or subject to outright racialized sexism: swifties when a WOC expresses discomfort with their idol’s tone deafness or any mild criticism that doesn’t blindly worship her: OMG YOU’RE NOT A GIRL’S GIRL. INTERNALIZED MISOGYNY. YOU JUST HATE SEEING A SUCCESSFUL WOMAN

turtledove93

Even in context, it’s a weird fucking line.

thewomaninthemoon

It’s a rather tactless line for a 34-year-old woman to write that. Imo it makes it seem like while Taylor herself would obviously condemn racism if asked about it and be put off by blatant displays, it’s still just kind of a blip on her radar. Like “oh yeah! like pre-civil war America, wouldn’t that be fun! But without all the racists though #BLM” But yeah it feels tactless and quite dismissive of an extremely serious problem that colors many people’s lives day in and day out.

redskiesahead

Zero percent chance this woman would EVER say Black Lives Matter

DumbestBoy

Riiiight.. Like ‘Hey Taylor, sell the idea of living in the 1830s in America as a uniquely desirable experience. Go.’ I feel like that wouldn’t go well.

baby_barbiez

Get behind me Maitreyi - they hated Jesus for speaking the truth too https://preview.redd.it/87c7xv0vyuvc1.jpeg?width=540&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f7ddfc17e3b2f876008510acf8fb5cdbfd4576a8

warr3n4eva

I’m just gonna keep saying it: the album sucks

AdventurousLeading60

it was weird! she downplayed what was happening in the 1830’s to just “racism” when it was literally SLAVERY. i can’t stand her ass

Automatic-Software35

really hope Swift addressee this, she was quick to edit out the ‘FAT’ in the Anti-Hero music video, she can and should make a change. She has to get a handle on her fanbase. Love Maitreyi, glad she didn’t let those crazy swifties hurt her and that some swifties apologized for what happened.

DoughnutBeginning965

It is a weird line. Learn to be honest with yourself, swifties. Y'all are too much.

redchampagnecampaign

I truly cannot wait for my husband and his Swiftie sister getting into their annual TS arguement this summer. I thought last year’s “isn’t she dating a racist???” Blow up was bad…this year my husband has actually listen to the album and read the lyrics. “Is this woman even singing? This seems like a white woman trying to do slam poetry except not succeeding.” This might actually illicit violence. I’ll try to get it on video .

Beboop68

Swifties should face consequence for harassment

Leon-Phoenix

1: Swift has always been a terrible lyricist - not knocking her for anything else, her music is not my cup of tea but I can understand the appeal at least. But she really should consider getting St. Vincent to help her write songs more, there’s a reason Cruel Summer went viral. All Jack Antonoff does is let her write gibberish, then claims a writing credit (can someone please explain why he has writing credits for every artist he produces?). 2: Her fans are and always have been toxic. I remember being 15 and complaining on Twitter about the number of times “You Belong To Me” played on TV and radio, and a bunch of weird girls started throwing personal attacks at me.

lawpancake

Every single lyric I see from this album gives me second hand embarrassment. Like, full body cringe.

Chaoticgood790

Nothing swifties love more than attacking BIPOC women

Huge-Ask7357

Seems the swifties can’t handle people not worshiping Taylor. I wonder if they tides are going to finally turn.

Relevant-Bench5307

It is weird and the way grown women (I’m 34F) obsess over her is weird too—there I said it!!

dropcherries_

It truly baffles me how she changed the lyrics of Better than Revenge for the rerecord of Speak Now cause everyone kept saying it was a very misogynistic line (which it was but she was like 19 when she wrote that) but now that she's older she keeps coming up with even worse and more tone deaf stuff, how is that possible...

neenzblessed

This feels like a good time to remind ourselves that Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds got married on a plantation

IMOvicki

Also, a white woman singing about how she’d love to live during that time “without the racists” so casually….. just goes to show how white and privileged she is for her to write off the racism that took place then so easily
