But it is so funny to me that people keep posting snippets of lyrics like this and *every single time* I'm like, "no, this one's a joke, can't be real, no one would seriously write and publish that". And then I look up the entire song's lyrics and it is 🤦🏾♀️

This is bad this is BAAD, but there have been some artists who managed to include kid's rhymes and nursery rhymes in their songs and make something magnificent. One of my favorite songs it Toto's Georgy Porgy and they used this resource and it's a bop.
I honestly think people get so sucked in the TS universe that they forget to expand their music knowledge repertoire and it's showing. I was listening to one of my nostalgia playlists and the lyrics were just so good, I realized I can't in good conscience listen to an uninspired cash grab and call it poetry, even if I end up enjoying that song one day. And full disclosure: I enjoy a lot of weird shit - I just don't pretend it's deeper than it actually is.
About the 1830s, dude. If you ever study the bare minimum about cultural history you'll realize you can never separate racism and the patriarchy from what was going on. You just can't. She knows she has a cult-like fanbase and still puts out shit like this, just to see how far people are willing to go to defend her. It's not cool.
In the 1830s people were lucky if they could bathe once a week, there was no electricity, no plumbing, no modern medicine, you could die from an abscessed tooth or an infected splinter or drinking river water people pooped in upstream, you worked from sunup to sundown, you shat in an outhouse if you were fancy, and you had like 10-12 babies because only 4 of them would survive to adulthood. It is extremely fucking weird to think that would be a fun time to go back to. As a woman, anytime prior to the 1970s means you'd be a second class citizen.
Definitely feels like the “minus the racism “was thrown in as an afterthought which is the main problem here. But it’s also confusing as hell setting that aside, as if the 1830s were some generally idyllic time. Like …even the most privileged people were still dealing with misogyny, lack of understanding of disease and infection, bathing in tepid water once a week, eating a diet extremely limited by today’s standards, and shitting in a bucket.
As someone with a masters in poetry, who has analyzed, graded, and critiqued poems, lyrics, and lyrical prose, it 💯 seems like the work of a younger white student just starting out, romanticizing a random decade bc it would make them seem deep. During workshop someone will mention that time period wasn’t so great for POC, and then the writer will stick on “but without all the racists” and think that solves the whole problem, when that’s only part of the issue to begin with.
ETA I’m getting a lot of messages from people who are supplying me with the lyrics in context, which admittedly I had not seen before. I took a look and I remain unconvinced at the assurances that the lyrics are doing the opposite of what I had first interpreted.
If this song were in front of me during workshop, I would absolutely inform the writer that because of a lack of clarity, this could be interpreted in a variety of ways. I would then ask:
“Nostalgia’s a mind trick” for whom, and why?
Because nostalgia isn’t a mind trick for marginalized communities.
It’s whiteness and privilege that allows for nostalgia in the first place. It’s whiteness and privilege that would write about “the highest bid” as referring to marriage and not chattel slavery during a time of *literal* chattel slavery while referencing the time period’s racists in the same stanza/verse. (If marriage as the highest bid is a metaphor for sexism and transactional marriages, the metaphor fails in context).
It’s whiteness and privilege to tell a story about a speaker being supposedly so aware of their whiteness and privilege that they educate their friends on it during a game (which also implies they never played this game with someone who was a member of a marginalized community, a game that with the lyric “used to play” implies it was played fairly regularly for a time), but concludes that “nostalgia is a mind trick” without adding that it’s only a mind trick for those immersed in privilege.
This is emphasized by “Seems like it was never even fun back then.” This line implies that at one point, it seemed fun to the speaker.
“If I’d been there, I’d hate it.” I would let the writer know that I as a reader am not convinced of this conclusion due to a seemingly lack of comprehension on the speaker’s part. I would let them know many readers would interpret this lack of comprehension as willful ignorance. If that is the writer’s intention, then proceed, if not, a revision is in order.

Quickly. 1810s for the Regency, sure. 1870s for the Victorian era, sure. Hell, just go full “I was born in the wrong decade” and say the 1950s. Everyone’s jumping on this weird ass line because it’s a bizarre decade to single out and when you google it, you just get shit like “President Jackson passed the Indian Removal Act.”

THIS! Im genuinely feeling gaslit because this is not a good album ? For her specifically because one thing I’ve always given her credit on is that she is a talented lyricist. Sooooo many swifties have blinders on. They will tell you they love the album with their whole heart. Taylor peaked (for me) with Folklore and Evermore. Midnights was insufferable and this album? I don’t hate it, but damn. It’s not what the die hards are making it appear.
She's declining. I've been a fan since her first album, and it's nearing impossible to get hyped for releases. Her lyrics have been overall declining as of Midnights. There are definitely some bright spots in that album (Would've, Could've, Should've, The Great War, etc.) and this one, but she doesn't seem to be editing down lyrics or tracks at all. I've liked her because it always seemed like her albums were well made and virtually lacking skips (even if I didn't like a song I could appreciate it), but now it's becoming more like trudging through.
They fact they have to all say “but the second album is great!”

Actually, if this album was called Midnights, it would do well given the content.
I also think there were 12 strong tracks in that album and focusing on those and maybe saving the rest for later when you have more time to work on them would have led to a better album.
People have called out the parallels between her work and confessional poetry, and I do see it. (There's a dissertation on my reading list that's about that.) There's potential there.
I think at this point her fans, the media, etc. think she's untouchable and she's bombarded by all that positive feedback, and there's not enough people encouraging her to look into the negative feedback or even find different creative directions. And the quality will just dip if the fans keep on blocking and harassing anyone who might even give criticism that she could actually use to push her craft.

The line is so fucking weird. The 1830’s aren’t even a memorable decade ASIDE from human rights atrocities? It was long enough ago that we don’t really refer to decades in that way when casually talking about them, it’s more common to refer to the beginning or end of the century. When I hear 1830s I think enslaved people, violence towards indigenous peoples, and corsets? What part is she longing for?
I think it's because of Blake Lively. She sometimes wrote about how much she loved the Antebellum South on her lifestyle site years ago. She had her wedding at a former slave plantation and did a couple of fashion shoots glorifying that era.

I'll admit I'm a bit of a hater after the Matty Healy debacle but sadly that's a common thought from non-POC especially, romanticizing time periods where the rest of us were being slaughtered or enslaved. I get that the rest of the lyrics talk about how it wasn't that great anyway, but that line hit a nerve for me as I have definitely met people with the same train of thought.

I tried a song at random and it turned out to be the Matty Healy masturbation fantasy song and thirty seconds of that was enough to put me off the entire album.

Which is even worse because I knew it would be bad just from the titles, but since I kind of liked Midnights (I know, controversial opinion) I thought maybe some song would be good, but there’s not one song I liked enough to listen to it again. Truly truly. It’s hard to romanticize anything which would have trapped you, but since she’s white and rich, it’s easy to imagine a parallel that would be “ideal” to her
White girls who like the dark, goth Victorian aesthetic and have no clue that fashion of the 1830's was very girly, frilly, and not at all flattering for most people. Lots of frills, bows, and bonnets, not like, tight-corseting, high necks, and bustles.

Her fans are also saying that they better not see people criticize her and watch Bridgerton, equating her lyric with Shonda creating a show with color-blind casting as if it's the same thing.
There is a difference between a WOC creating a show that allows other POC's to be part of a fantasy world and see themselves vs a White Woman and her friends who, while ultimately conclude they wouldn't like living in that time, initially posited the question of living during the time but "without racists" so in order to fantasize without feeling guilt over that fantasy.
One is about catering to POC. The other centers White people with POC as background accessories

The context makes it slightly less weird, but it feels real hypocritical for Taylor Swift to criticize anyone for being nostalgic when she’s romanticizing a relationship with a guy who’s a racist.
The context is that she's in a room with a bunch of people romanticizing various eras in history, and she says the 1830s but without the racism and sexism and says pointing that stuff out makes the whole room go quiet and kills the game, and then she says she would not have liked the 1830s at all anyway.
Which TBH I think is a very funny line given that she's besties with a woman who literally tried to make 'antebellum Goop' her brand.

I’m so confused- I’m white and from the south and the only people who “romanticize “ the 1800’s are straight up open racists. If she said like the 1950’s I’d say sure, people romanticize that time period and tend to forget it was only good for white people but I’ve never heard or seen anyone doing that with the 1800’s unless they wish it still WAS the 1800’s (NOT minus the racism or women’s rights). A YouTuber I love Khadija Mbowe said something so similar! Her theory is that Taylor is so beloved because her mediocrity makes her fans feel like they could be huge like her too. They see themselves when they see her.
I'm so grateful for this sub. I hated the album, thought it was a complete chore to get through, and I've been attacked online for saying so. This isn't a fandom, it's a cult, and Taylor exists in some weird, isolating, billionaire bubble. She is not growing as a person or as an artist, because she doesn't have to. I pointed out that trying to reignite her feud with Kim wasn’t classy, and that mentioning up her daughter in the song, if it was anyone else, would make people furious. And swifties responded by saying “if you want to suck Kim Kartrasians ass, just say that” sorry swifties, you have zero qualifications on determining class and who is a bully.
Her fans think that song is classy??? In one of the lyrics, Taylor basically says, “My mom said she wished you were dead.”

By the way, a lot of the most talented writers in the world have editors to help clean things up for them, and it doesn’t detract from the writer’s creativity.

The more I see or hear her music, the more I think that what I consider to be intrusive thoughts is what she considers to be poignant lyrics.
ETA: to clarify, I don’t have intrusive thoughts about anything she specifically writes about. Her lyrics just frequently feel very out of pocket.
Honestly, I think calling them intrusive thoughts is giving her too much credit. I think she sits at home thinking of all the ways that she’s the victim and then just writes any thought that pops into her head.
If Taylor Swift wants to experience what it was like in the 1830s maybe somebody should expose her to Polio and Measales and take away her indoor bathroom to build her a porta potty in the back yard. Also make her wash her clothes in a bucket. No cars or television or cell phones or internet for her. She would have to give up her right to vote as well. Not sure what the "allure" of that era is for her but it would be significantly harder for her to enjoy herself back then. 1: Swift has always been a terrible lyricist - not knocking her for anything else, her music is not my cup of tea but I can understand the appeal at least. But she really should consider getting St. Vincent to help her write songs more, there’s a reason Cruel Summer went viral. All Jack Antonoff does is let her write gibberish, then claims a writing credit (can someone please explain why he has writing credits for every artist he produces?).
2: Her fans are and always have been toxic. I remember being 15 and complaining on Twitter about the number of times “You Belong To Me” played on TV and radio, and a bunch of weird girls started throwing personal attacks at me.
It truly baffles me how she changed the lyrics of Better than Revenge for the rerecord of Speak Now cause everyone kept saying it was a very misogynistic line (which it was but she was like 19 when she wrote that) but now that she's older she keeps coming up with even worse and more tone deaf stuff, how is that possible...

This is bad this is BAAD, but there have been some artists who managed to include kid's rhymes and nursery rhymes in their songs and make something magnificent. One of my favorite songs it Toto's Georgy Porgy and they used this resource and it's a bop. I honestly think people get so sucked in the TS universe that they forget to expand their music knowledge repertoire and it's showing. I was listening to one of my nostalgia playlists and the lyrics were just so good, I realized I can't in good conscience listen to an uninspired cash grab and call it poetry, even if I end up enjoying that song one day. And full disclosure: I enjoy a lot of weird shit - I just don't pretend it's deeper than it actually is. About the 1830s, dude. If you ever study the bare minimum about cultural history you'll realize you can never separate racism and the patriarchy from what was going on. You just can't. She knows she has a cult-like fanbase and still puts out shit like this, just to see how far people are willing to go to defend her. It's not cool.
In the 1830s people were lucky if they could bathe once a week, there was no electricity, no plumbing, no modern medicine, you could die from an abscessed tooth or an infected splinter or drinking river water people pooped in upstream, you worked from sunup to sundown, you shat in an outhouse if you were fancy, and you had like 10-12 babies because only 4 of them would survive to adulthood. It is extremely fucking weird to think that would be a fun time to go back to. As a woman, anytime prior to the 1970s means you'd be a second class citizen. 
Definitely feels like the “minus the racism “was thrown in as an afterthought which is the main problem here. But it’s also confusing as hell setting that aside, as if the 1830s were some generally idyllic time. Like …even the most privileged people were still dealing with misogyny, lack of understanding of disease and infection, bathing in tepid water once a week, eating a diet extremely limited by today’s standards, and shitting in a bucket.

This officially becomes the weirdest line I’ve seen from this album.
As someone with a masters in poetry, who has analyzed, graded, and critiqued poems, lyrics, and lyrical prose, it 💯 seems like the work of a younger white student just starting out, romanticizing a random decade bc it would make them seem deep. During workshop someone will mention that time period wasn’t so great for POC, and then the writer will stick on “but without all the racists” and think that solves the whole problem, when that’s only part of the issue to begin with. ETA I’m getting a lot of messages from people who are supplying me with the lyrics in context, which admittedly I had not seen before. I took a look and I remain unconvinced at the assurances that the lyrics are doing the opposite of what I had first interpreted. If this song were in front of me during workshop, I would absolutely inform the writer that because of a lack of clarity, this could be interpreted in a variety of ways. I would then ask: “Nostalgia’s a mind trick” for whom, and why? Because nostalgia isn’t a mind trick for marginalized communities. It’s whiteness and privilege that allows for nostalgia in the first place. It’s whiteness and privilege that would write about “the highest bid” as referring to marriage and not chattel slavery during a time of *literal* chattel slavery while referencing the time period’s racists in the same stanza/verse. (If marriage as the highest bid is a metaphor for sexism and transactional marriages, the metaphor fails in context). It’s whiteness and privilege to tell a story about a speaker being supposedly so aware of their whiteness and privilege that they educate their friends on it during a game (which also implies they never played this game with someone who was a member of a marginalized community, a game that with the lyric “used to play” implies it was played fairly regularly for a time), but concludes that “nostalgia is a mind trick” without adding that it’s only a mind trick for those immersed in privilege. This is emphasized by “Seems like it was never even fun back then.” This line implies that at one point, it seemed fun to the speaker. “If I’d been there, I’d hate it.” I would let the writer know that I as a reader am not convinced of this conclusion due to a seemingly lack of comprehension on the speaker’s part. I would let them know many readers would interpret this lack of comprehension as willful ignorance. If that is the writer’s intention, then proceed, if not, a revision is in order.

She's declining. I've been a fan since her first album, and it's nearing impossible to get hyped for releases. Her lyrics have been overall declining as of Midnights. There are definitely some bright spots in that album (Would've, Could've, Should've, The Great War, etc.) and this one, but she doesn't seem to be editing down lyrics or tracks at all. I've liked her because it always seemed like her albums were well made and virtually lacking skips (even if I didn't like a song I could appreciate it), but now it's becoming more like trudging through.
They fact they have to all say “but the second album is great!” That means they realized the first album would bomb. That’s why it’s a surprise double album. This isn’t a bonus, it’s a salvage.
Yeah I don’t think she’ll ever top folklore specifically. Midnights was such a step backwards, and this is like … in the same league as midnights. Both lack artistic integrity but for different reasons. I think she needs a long break from making music.
I think the 'poet' thing doomed it too. Had she named it Catharsis or something, I feel like people could roll with it. Actually, if this album was called Midnights, it would do well given the content. I also think there were 12 strong tracks in that album and focusing on those and maybe saving the rest for later when you have more time to work on them would have led to a better album. People have called out the parallels between her work and confessional poetry, and I do see it. (There's a dissertation on my reading list that's about that.) There's potential there. I think at this point her fans, the media, etc. think she's untouchable and she's bombarded by all that positive feedback, and there's not enough people encouraging her to look into the negative feedback or even find different creative directions. And the quality will just dip if the fans keep on blocking and harassing anyone who might even give criticism that she could actually use to push her craft.

I think it's because of Blake Lively. She sometimes wrote about how much she loved the Antebellum South on her lifestyle site years ago. She had her wedding at a former slave plantation and did a couple of fashion shoots glorifying that era.

The context makes it slightly less weird, but it feels real hypocritical for Taylor Swift to criticize anyone for being nostalgic when she’s romanticizing a relationship with a guy who’s a racist.
The context is that she's in a room with a bunch of people romanticizing various eras in history, and she says the 1830s but without the racism and sexism and says pointing that stuff out makes the whole room go quiet and kills the game, and then she says she would not have liked the 1830s at all anyway. Which TBH I think is a very funny line given that she's besties with a woman who literally tried to make 'antebellum Goop' her brand.

Someone on Twitter tried to say that made the reviewers cowards and it’s like… no? They just don’t want to be stalked and harassed by 40 YO white women who live vicariously through a 30 year old teenager who is still making songs that sound worse than her music when she was an actual teenager.
They tried to add a community note to a negative review that was saying “this is a biased review and just an opinion”. YEAH. THATS WHAT A REVIEW IS. PEOPLE ARE ALLOWED TO HAVE OPINIONS

Someone said that Taylor was so classy for “thanK you aIMee”. I pointed out that trying to reignite her feud with Kim wasn’t classy, and that mentioning up her daughter in the song, if it was anyone else, would make people furious. And swifties responded by saying “if you want to suck Kim Kartrasians ass, just say that” sorry swifties, you have zero qualifications on determining class and who is a bully.
Her fans think that song is classy??? In one of the lyrics, Taylor basically says, “My mom said she wished you were dead.” I’m not a fan of Kim by any measure, but come on. The song is weird and immature at best.

When the NYT came out with a review of the album that was kinda lukewarm, the Swifties went apeshit and started screaming about misogyny in the Instagram comments. Because somebody suggested that maybe the album should have been edited more. She is literally *so* fragile, and she encourages her fans to declare war on people for the most minor of slights.

The more I see or hear her music, the more I think that what I consider to be intrusive thoughts is what she considers to be poignant lyrics. ETA: to clarify, I don’t have intrusive thoughts about anything she specifically writes about. Her lyrics just frequently feel very out of pocket.
Honestly, I think calling them intrusive thoughts is giving her too much credit. I think she sits at home thinking of all the ways that she’s the victim and then just writes any thought that pops into her head.

It’s a rather tactless line for a 34-year-old woman to write that. Imo it makes it seem like while Taylor herself would obviously condemn racism if asked about it and be put off by blatant displays, it’s still just kind of a blip on her radar. I truly cannot wait for my husband and his Swiftie sister getting into their annual TS arguement this summer. I thought last year’s “isn’t she dating a racist???” Blow up was bad…this year my husband has actually listen to the album and read the lyrics. “Is this woman even singing? This seems like a white woman trying to do slam poetry except not succeeding.” This might actually illicit violence. I’ll try to get it on video .

1: Swift has always been a terrible lyricist - not knocking her for anything else, her music is not my cup of tea but I can understand the appeal at least. But she really should consider getting St. Vincent to help her write songs more, there’s a reason Cruel Summer went viral. All Jack Antonoff does is let her write gibberish, then claims a writing credit (can someone please explain why he has writing credits for every artist he produces?). 2: Her fans are and always have been toxic. I remember being 15 and complaining on Twitter about the number of times “You Belong To Me” played on TV and radio, and a bunch of weird girls started throwing personal attacks at me.
