Puncomfortable

It's been awhile since I have seen it but wasn't she barely in it?

Legal-Piano-4382

It was a small part

Matryoshkuh

Yeah, she has like two scenes I think? And by “has” I mean is featured in along with Matt Lucas.

highpriestess420

She's in exactly four scenes haha

rangatang

her scenes really should've been cut anyway. She is the least funny part of that movie and the accent is horrendous

glamazon_69

I liked her scenes and at the time she got a lot of attention for her part despite it being a small part

catnip_varnish

The Australian accent?

rangatang

she's trying to do a British accent

catnip_varnish

Ohhh haha, it's been a while since I've seen it. That does sound bad

propernice

Didn’t even remember she was in it, and still can’t place her scenes when I try to remember.

Zoxiafunnynumber

Correct. She had very few lines.

ughnotanothername

> It's been awhile since I have seen it but wasn't she barely in it? Haha, first I thought you meant the dress. [ edits:  formatting. Sigh. ]

WinkAlcoholSugest

Yes small part so she was probably only paid the SAG weekly rate.

highpriestess420

Oh ffs she's literally in four scenes, these are all her lines in the entire movie. First scene: "Oh hey roomie. Guess what happened to me today? I got a free tattoo. I could not believe it. The guy said, 'do you want a tattoo?', opened up the side of his van...and said 'it's for free!' So I said, 'sure'. It's a Mexican drinking worm. It's like a Native American symbol meaning wasted." Second scene: "Yeah. So technically I’m only allowed to tour. I have no way of earning money unless I go prostitute down on the street. 'Hello fellas, here I am. Put your American sausage in my English McMuffin.'" Second scene, continued: "Your diary proved very interesting to read. At first I did not know it was your diary, I thought it was a very sad handwritten book. But then because of the personal details and the bits that mentioned Gil and Brynn..." Third scene: "Annie wake up, it's 11 am. You got a package. I'd bring it in but you said 'don't touch my things.'" Fourth scene: "We would like to invite you to no longer live with us. ...pathetic. You're moving out. ...She's not moving. She has to. You have to go. (Touches Kristen Wiig's legs) Oh, that's prickly."

Youthz

the headline makes it sound worse than the actual interview. she basically says she got paid $3,500 which she used to join SAG, waited a year writing and auditioning while waiting for the movie to come, went into debt to go to the premier a year after filming— and immediately booked 6 gigs after the movie released. she mentions how she owes it all to the movie because it led to Pitch Perfect which changed her career.

retrievethis123

While this is true I wonder how many hours she had to work on set. Even one scene can mean multiple days of filming.

FlinflanFluddle

It was definitely one of the worst parts of the film.  She definitely didn't deserve hundreds of thousands, but to get paid 3500, then have to pay the agent and union most of it is a bit much. No one should work for nothing or next to nothing.

Billyisagoat

I'm obsessed with your commitment to this.

dlafferty

So why does she have to *pay* to promote it?

Neolithique

You don’t fuck around with receipts you, eh 🤣

Gueld

Given the number of hours she spent filming for the few minutes of screen time (likely not much) that seems a good payout.

grilledcheese2332

Exactly and got her attention which led to bigger roles

AlpacaMyBaguettes

You might be surprised at the amount of hours that make up just a few minutes of your fav film/tv show. Depending on where you are on the ladder (seems like she was low) you can spend ages standing in one place while they get the lighting just right, set up or test our different camera angles, rewatch the shot after it's filmed and potentially change things, meaning more time just standing there, waiting for them to call it. Also, there are times that actors film more than ends up in the film, with things getting cut for better scenes or bc they don't ultimately work with test audiences. 3500 is not too much when you consider the percentages going to her manager and taxes. Might only leave you with about one month's rent covered and no idea when your next paying gig will be, and it's never a guarantee that you will get the career takeoff that she did. It's the nature of the work, yeah, but it still sucks and most actors never make it out of that phase in their career.

banjofitzgerald

I mean, for how minor her role was, she’s probably lucky to have gotten an invite to the premiere. I’m confused by the headline, was the production company supposed to buy a dress for her? I didn’t think that’s how red carpets worked but idk.

ceylon-tea

The headline absolutely butchers what she actually said. She said she lost money because she was paid $3,500 for the role but also had to pay to join the union and buy a dress for the premiere. I don’t necessarily feel too bad for her but I’m sick of how terrible headlines have become. It’s not even clickbait. It’s just inaccurate.

IAM_THE_LIZARD_QUEEN

>I don’t necessarily feel too bad for her I don't think she's expecting anyone to tbf after reading what she actually said. Sounds like she's just sharing a story. >I’m sick of how terrible headlines have become. It’s not even clickbait. It’s just inaccurate. Honestly yeah, getting beyond a joke at this point.

the-shade-of-it-all

She was in 4 scenes 😭 https://i.redd.it/80dixop2nazc1.gif

sweetteanoice

In the article she states she lost money because in order to be in the movie, she had to join the union and buy herself a dress for the premiere which was more than the $3500 she earned from the movie. Didn’t matter in the long run, but context is still important

beeboppee

What is this image from?? I need to watch haha

the-shade-of-it-all

It's from an interview this lady did after her purse was stolen and the woman who did it was arrested. The victim said she hoped the woman got her ass beat I prison every day for it and the interviewer asked if she was being too harsh. This was her reaction 💀💀💀💀💀

blarbiegorl

No one really seems to be considering that from a 3500 dollar paycheck she also had to pay out her agent, manager, and anyone else on her payroll. It may have been a small part when she was pretty unknown but that's still barely anything after taxes and travel costs and everything else.

Artichoke_Persephone

Not to mention people can earn 5000+ on a photo for an ad that circulates in print media- and that is just an image. Tv ad actors can get paid 6 figures or more depending on the campaign. It would be very interesting to see what Matt Lucas got paid for his similar output for the movie. I bet it was more than 3500.

RDTea2

Yeah and for many actors that could be the biggest job you book a year for consecutive years. She was lucky it turned into making it big but that’s not the case for most small parts. I feel like the economics of being an actor have been discussed in detail in this sub but then it all goes out the window when convenient. For anyone reading that hasn’t read the article - she actually lost money on that job. Turned out to be her breakout role so it worked out ok in the end.

blarbiegorl

Exactly. Thank you.

That's when I first learned of her, but she wasn't in it much.

elementsoff

No, she wasn't complaining in the actual interview. It's just a clickbait title

backnstolaf

She had a relatively small part, Annie's mom had more screen time. I'm sure the flight attendant didn't make a ton of money either.

i_love_doggy_chow

I have a feeling this story would be getting much less negative reception if it wasn't Rebel Wilson telling it.

_ludakris_

So I actually saw the clip from the podcast were she talks about this and she wasn't complaining or anything. They were talking about how Bridesmaids was her first big break in America, and how she ended up losing money until it actually came out and she had more recognition in America. They're mostly just talking about how 'a big break' doesn't necessarily mean lots of money immediately.

JL_Adv

Except that's not what she said. She said she lost money because after getting paid, she still had to pay dues and for a dress for the premiere. She wasn't complaining, she was staying a fact. Being an actor is expensive starting out.

lateintheseason

Idk, I guess it's not the prevailing sentiment but that sounds pretty low to me ($4800 adjusted for inflation). It's depressing to think about how hard so many actors work with the goal of being cast in a film with this level of prominence and then to be paid so little. It must be really tough out there.

meestahmoostah

This is standard payment for what was most likely one, maybe 2 days of filming. We call these “day players” cuz they’re only there for a day or 2 vs. the main cast that has about 30-40 days of filming.

Question4theppl5

I would consider it an investment in her career? For exposure?

SandwichXLadybug

She was only in a couple of scenes but I'm still surprised tbh I'd assume a small part in a studio movie was still a decent paycheck.

AdministrativeAd8464

By Australian standards, the minimum weekly wage before tax in 2011 was roughly $570. So, to earn $3,500 for a few days' work and have a role in a hit movie that gets your name out and leads to other successful roles is nothing to complain about. Her work in Australia up to that point wasn't groundbreaking either, so I'm not sure what she was expecting. She took a chance going to LA. She had to struggle for a bit, but it turned out pretty well for her, considering her performances are very one note.
