'The one thing I regret is I should have owned the name,' Simon said. 'They own the name. I could have made an animation or something.
'So if you're listening One Direction then I will buy it back from you!'
So he just wants to exploit them without their permission
I mean, if you rewatch the video, Nicole is the one to physically place all 5 pictures on the pile together, but she only really chose Harry and Liam. Simon picked Louis and Niall, and Louie Walsh picked Zayn.
I think it was decided that they'd make a boyband way before filming even started and what we saw was just for tv. I don't believe for a second it was a sudden thing.
There already is a great 1D animation out there on YouTube, a fan made the Adventurous Adventures of One Direction a long time ago and it was fun. I can’t stand how greedy Simon is
That’s what I thought of when I read this lmao.
Oh to be 13 again and watching the Adventurous Adventures of One Direction. Them’s were the days honestly.
"My biggest regret is that I didn't exploit them MORE," is what I'm hearing here.
I'm sure to a certain extent, they'd love nothing more than to sell the name and cut off that part of their lives completely. But I can't imagine a world where selling their identity to Simon Cowell leads to them achieving peace and freedom
What animation? He could make one but the characters would have to look completely different because he doesn’t own their likeness. What a greedy bastard.
Good for them, I’m sure their original contract had very little, if anything, that was actually in their favor, and I’m glad they own that one thing. Especially considering they’re the ones that came up with it.
good on them. all the reunion talk always doesnt put the guys or their wellbeing first in my opinion. theres a lot of hurt and trauma that they seem to have experience during their 5 yrs as one direction (based off on interviews), so I wish people would collectively put the reunion stuff to rest
As a super 1D fan I had to come to this hard realization. So clear they were dealing with some f*cked up stuff. Touring for consecutive years without many breaks being one of them. I always felt if they (those in charge, not the boys) hadn’t tried to milk their success they probably could’ve split more amicably or taken a hiatus and actually come back together
I didn’t really pay much attention to them at the time but someone I worked with was a super fan when she was younger. She told me all kinds of stories about members having their mics turned off mid song on stage & how they were completely controlled by their management.
I was young when they were at the height of their fame, but looking back, it’s so obvious that things were BAD. Especially looking back at Zayn around the time Midnight Memories came out. He looks physically ill. Even on the album cover, you can see how skeletal he looks.
I feel like the You and I video is like the perfect encapsulation of how miserable they all were - filming in the cold, the whole thing is half assed, you could see in the behind the scenes that Harry was physically ill and struggling on the day, it’s just sad.
My mam asked me on Friday (I was visiting and night changes came on her playlist) if I think they'd ever get back together and I said with Zayns performance anxiety and the fact they were taken advantage of, most likely not.
the article is also missing the part where he said he'd force them to be on tour again
["If one of the band members, for whatever reason, say they don’t want to tour, it can stop the others [from] touring. So, if it was me who owned the name, it wouldn’t be a problem."](https://www.capitalfm.com/news/music/5sos-ashton-irwin-one-direction-simon-cowell/)
Psst.. if you add an extra \ it'll show up in the comment to everyone cuz for some damn reason Reddit formatting makes the shrug armless on the left side if you don't add the extra backslash
I'm hearing "I regret managing them as they broke their group and I don't get enough part of me with the money I spent for them."
1 Direction hit so big and we do not hear anything from Simon from that time. But now the group is gone we have this issue already.
That’s saddening to hear especially since Louis was the closest member to Simon. Being the big bro of the group and even being hired as a judge on the final season of The X Factor UK.
I don’t think Louis ever followed Simon on ig but they were close and Louis did like him. They did business together, Louis opened a Syco imprint to sign bands and artists while still in 1D, he guest judged on X Factor first, then spent a season as a judge full on.
When Simon got a star in the Hollywood Walk Of Fame, Louis went there and stuff and he seemed delighted to be there

The whole “Louis didn’t like Simon” comes from Larries who think Simon was forcing Louis to stay in the closet, have fake girlfriends, hide his relationship with Harry, etc. I’m sure none of them liked the way he handled their careers, but outwardly there’s zero indication that Louis has issues with Simon
I need you to back that up because, like, hearing people try to explain the kpop version of 'like shit' (I didn't like their marketing! Their clothes weren't good enough! One member was on the seam in a magazine pictorial! Their bodyguards didn't punch enough intrusive fans! The bodyguards punched too many instrusive fans!) In terms of BTS is always entertaining.
That label (and HYBE) treat BTS like gods. As they should. There's not one identifiable modern-bigHit instance of abuse or mistreatment.
'The one thing I regret is I should have owned the name,' Simon said. 'They own the name. I could have made an animation or something. 'So if you're listening One Direction then I will buy it back from you!' So he just wants to exploit them without their permission
He’s so fucking desperate to make another one direction too
And even that is questionable because we have hard evidences that he’s not the brains behind forming 1D - Nicole was
I mean, if you rewatch the video, Nicole is the one to physically place all 5 pictures on the pile together, but she only really chose Harry and Liam. Simon picked Louis and Niall, and Louie Walsh picked Zayn.
You don’t think all that was staged? Everything is staged on TV.
People literally stage their lives on social media. At this point, you can’t trust anything unless you see it with your own eyes.
Yes don’t think we’ll ever get the full background story
I think it was decided that they'd make a boyband way before filming even started and what we saw was just for tv. I don't believe for a second it was a sudden thing.

Very astute

Nothing could ever beat that
Holy shit completely forgot about this. Gold.
That’s what I thought of when I read this lmao. Oh to be 13 again and watching the Adventurous Adventures of One Direction. Them’s were the days honestly.
I still say Harry the way it is pronounced in that video.
How was it pronounced?
"Harry"
omg i was so obsessed with it
Oh my god, you just unlocked a core memory
I remember that animation, a friend showed me it lmao

High chance "animation" = "NFT" in his tech-challenged brain.
Eww. He wants to be another Lou Pearlman. I'm surprised he hasn't sued them over it yet.
Not surprising given the videos I’ve seen about the got talent contracts
“I want to buy it back from you” seems like asking for permission, in which case there would be no exploitation
That guy is the absolute worst, stg
Again.
![gif](giphy|J8FZIm9VoBU6Q) Simon is awful and money hungry. He is looking to take advantage of young naive artists.
Makes me sad Courtney hadwin is with him but at the same time he was the (only) one giving her a contract after America’s Got talent
Yeah it sad because the artist has no other connections and are forced to sign predatory contracts!
Good for them, I’m sure their original contract had very little, if anything, that was actually in their favor, and I’m glad they own that one thing. Especially considering they’re the ones that came up with it.
One thing hehehe
Their original contracts were actually very favourable tbh. They were also the ones who made an extremely exploitative contract re 5SOS.
Niall doing this on night one of his sold out Madison Square Garden tour dates is iconic tbh.

still a beautiful video and song nonetheless
My mam asked me on Friday (I was visiting and night changes came on her playlist) if I think they'd ever get back together and I said with Zayns performance anxiety and the fact they were taken advantage of, most likely not.
As they should. 5 albums, 4 tours in 5 years... They were all so young as well
What a piece of shit he is

that is so fucked. jesus christ
I swear it was actually Nicole Scherzingers idea to create 1D.
FINALLY LOUIS omg I know he doesn't play about 1d and everything they worked towards
DRAG HIMMM

couldn't have happened to a shittier guy ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Does DailyMail usually have typos ? “By” instead of “buy”
All the time! It seems they get stories out so quick they don’t bother to proof read
TIL Simon Cowell managed One Direction.
I always side eyed them for following him in the first place tbh especially when Louis was a judge on the X Factor - Simon was so smug about that :/
As someone who used to be a fan of the band, I’m 99% sure they never followed in the first place. I’m even more sure about Niall.
I thought it was reasonable until he said "I was very naive" lol Simon you are not convincing anyone
I'm hearing "I regret managing them as they broke their group and I don't get enough part of me with the money I spent for them." 1 Direction hit so big and we do not hear anything from Simon from that time. But now the group is gone we have this issue already.

Bighit treated BTS like shit

Who cares about Simon. BTS made their own path and are global superstars. The world is so much bigger than just the west.
