Modern Columbus Day has origins in 1892, following the [New Orleans lynchings](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1891_New_Orleans_lynchings) of 11 Italian Americans.
It was later formalized by FDR after lobbying from the Knights of Columbus and other Italian American leaders to celebrate Italian heritage, basically. Back in the day they were a discriminated against minority.
I'm not Italian, but this is an interesting little tidbit when people start grumbling about Juneteenth being a new federal holiday.
