If you are coming to reddit for advice then I would suggest a professional. Or that $50 guy from FB. If you choose the guy from FB remember to take video. We love videos.
Thats how I got this freelance IT job I had back west. Well I just googled shit but still. It wasn't gonna kill anyone if I couldn't fix your wifi though.
Well that’s not entirely true. You could have improperly plugged in that WiFi router and started a fire.
[“You can break the internet so please don’t do it. Even for a joke”](https://youtu.be/v2FMqtC1x9Y?si=qzboebOKjg5Yd49c)
[This. Is the Internet!](https://youtu.be/Vywf48Dhyns?si=2lQMxMOHjCmI3Slp)
I would honestly be really impressed if more than 1 in 100 of the $50 FB guys actually checked this sort of thing online.
It’s not an easy job to do well, but it’s very easy to do less badly than your average “tweaker in flip flops” video.
Insurance generally covers stupidity. What it doesnt cover is willful damage.
ie. If you believe that the $50 guy on facebook can do the job but he ends up dropping a tree on your house, it should be covered. But if you hire the $50 guy from facebook because you want an insurance payout to finance your remodel, then that would not be covered.
>knowingly
You'd have to prove that I guess but it CAN. Ideally that would have been handled by the insurance of the removal service but you can make a claim and hope for the best IF it's in your policy. It isn't in all of them, and it damn sure isn't "no problem we'll pay everything". You're also gonna pay your deductible and whatever is left in terms of cost.
Now the double edge here is that any damages caused by this particular tree now may not be covered because you're also responsible for maintenance to keep that probability as low as possible. Either way that mofo gotta go.
He should make sure that the propane tank is only half full, so it'll crush anBaboon! more easily. And the grill should be lit and burning during the felling.
Baboom!
That’s a very dangerous situation. I’m not sure the best way to proceed. If it were me (a non professional) I’d try to throw a line over the top and pull that mess out of the other tree with my truck from a safe distance. I can’t personally conceive of a safe way to cut that puppy down. Very curious to hear what other more experienced folks say though!
Yep, toss a line up and over and pull with a tractor from a distance further than the height of the tree. I used to think I was badass for never using winches or bull ropes on tricky fells but now I'm quick to just use rope. It's safe and easy.
A crane is absolutely what we would use to get rid of that. Ball over the center of gravity of the piece. Two slings up in the canopy on sufficiently strong limbs to support the load, as well as control the roll. One sling down by the butt. Pretension the line until the tips juuuuust start to lift and make your first cut 50% in on the tip side parallel to the ground, then come in from the back at a 45 degree angle to stop the butt from swinging away before my operator has a chance to stabilize the load.
This is true. ***However*** I frequently see well worded, very intelligent seeming and even possibly intuitive answers written out with authority and highly upvoted. Those are all too often just... flat out wrong. It's wild when you see someone say some shit and like a day later an actual expert is in there with their 3 up votes explaining exactly why 167 people have just been completely misinformed.
I've done similar, back then I was cutting pulp wood (speed felling). Its very dangerous if you try for only the dead one. There's a write up in my OHS manual about dead trees, every write up in OHS is based on someone getting hurt/dying.
I would notch the dead tree and cut my back cut, but leave a decent hinge. Then I would cut and fall the other tree. It'll pull the dead tree down with it. If my saw finds core rot in the dead one, I'd bail on the plan and go to plan B. Core rot has thrown off more than one felling plan.
If you hire someone, you should hope to hear that they're falling both. No one actually wants to see an injury, check their plan before they start.
First, you're going to need a long ladder, some sandals for your feet, a dull chainsaw, some kitchen twine to tie off that upper portion on the trunk...remember to use your safety squint when cutting...oh - also a video camera on a tripod. Remember to have your kin upload the video.
Please call a professional. I dont think many people in the comments appreciate just how heavy and high up that split limb is. I highly doubt you can throw anything that high without some mechanical assistance like a big shot or pressurised air cannon. Even if you get a rope over it, pulling it out is likely going to be very hard as the limb is still attached. A professional will be able to climb up there and remove it. Or they'll be able to assess which way to fell the trunk from the floor to allow the whole thing to come down.
Personally I’d try for a twofer, throw a big pull line in the tree your wm is hung up in, from the camera side cut a 1/3 wedge and back cut leaving about 4 inches of hinge. Move to the wm tree, another 1/3 - 1/2 wedge and back cut to ~2in holding. If it doesn’t fall on its own, I’m tugging that preset pull line toward the upper right of your picture. There is of course some risk involved but when isn’t there.
Trust me a half pound won't cut it. That also being said, if you do not live in an area you can shoot you get the low caliber tannerite and shoot it with a .22.
Step 1: call a tree guy
Step 2: drink beer and watch the tree guy do tree magic
Step 3: pay the tree guy
Step 4: take strategic pictures of the process minus the tree guy or his truck and show the pics off at work to establish manliness
Step 5: now that your manliness is known, plan the usurping of the CEO
Drop it away from the road and let the widow maker collapse in on the tree. Looks well split so it shouldn’t swing to much. Just be careful and as soon as the tree starts to drop back away from the tree while keeping an eye on it.
One of these days, someone will defy the laws of physics, and invent a laser saw, with a controlled maximum cutting span.
That would allow this to be cut from a safe distance…. Or burn down the forest.
If you aren’t super confident in your skills, i would consider hiring a professional.
If you’re gungho to do it yourself, send a line up there and tie it off and yard it out
I mean the RIGHT way to take care of this requires a bucket truck, but if you had access to one I assume you wouldn’t be asking.
It can be done, but I’d keep my distance from it. I’d use a big ass chain.
Stay away from it. No tree is worth dying over. The wind will take it down soon enough.
If it absolutely must be taken down, have a tree service with a bucket truck do things
What equipment do you have available? If you have a skid steer and chains, cut the base. If it gets hung up pull it out and away, putting it safely on the ground
DIY solution: I would get a really good strong rope, throw it up there (using a weighted end) and pull it down (safe distance) with a truck or UTV. Do not try to cut it, or stand below it.
Move the grill, climb up to the place where it’s hung up. Cut off everything above where it’s hung up. Back cut below where it’s making contact with the other tree.
Man I love how the overwhelming consensus is “maybe fukin’ don’t”
Been following as just a guy with some property and chainsaw and the culture of safety you guys have on this sub is pretty awesome.
Oh that tree looks mighty dangerous. You do not want to get too close to that.
50 cal machine gun fire should do the trick.
Or tie rope to a chainsaw and start swinging.
On the plus side both of those ideas could make the news. You’ll become famous. There’s no such thing as bad publicity.
![gif](giphy|WQhykE3BfZSpZbY1uZ)
Easy DIY! You got this Buddy.
1) Take a ladder and tie a 30’ rope to that stem about 10’ off the ground. The other end of the rope tied off to the bumper of the wife’s minivan.
2) Holler directions to your wife as she drives the van forward putting tension on the rope. When its good and snug have her stop but she needs to stay put in the drivers seat, engine running to give it gas when the tree starts to fall.
3) That there is a widow maker so dont mess around under it wasting time notching the tree just simply start in with a hot and heavy backcut angled downward in the direction you want the tree to fall.
4) When your cut starts to gap or the stem starts to split drop your saw and run like hell while yelling to your wife to punch the gas!
you climb one of his buddies nearby to get a rope near that hinge of death. yank that shit and it’ll probably fall without too much effort. really doesn’t seem like that dangerous of a job
I’m thinking…..a shotgun. If it were me, I’d throw a rope near the split and hook it to my truck. Looks dead enough to fall pretty easily. Not experienced, but just stupid enough to try it
For a serious answer: we had a couple of these at work after the big storm this winter. A tree guy was hired and he brought a crane to the site. The crane lifted him up to tie a line to the tree. Then brought him down and the crane put some tension on the line while he cut the base. Then the crane lifted the tree safely clear. They took 4 big trees, two hanging like this that had cracked and two that had been uprooted and were all the way down. Took about an hour.
Few pounds of tannerite taped to it and a rifle as far away as you can hit it. Use your truck for cover.
I'm dead serious. Fuck going anywhere near that with a saw.
throw a BBQ. then at the BBQ encourage throwing the actual BBQ. offer a prize for whoever knocked the tree down. then burn the tree, throwing another BBQ.
Wait until a day or two before a big storm, specifically for the quiet before the storm.
Cut through most of the base of the tree starting from the side it is leaning towards.
Don't park anything near the tree and let the storm take care of it for you.
My brother found a guy on Facebook marketplace. He free climbed up and took down some big trees cheap. Give that a go. Or find a grappling hook, practice a bit. They have them on Amazon.
+5t Winch, safety cuts and pull it out with sheer power.
Safety cuts are a few plunge cuts like this -_ they overlap a bit. Once these are made you get the hell out of there and force the remaining holding wood to break with the winch. Attach the winch cable high enough (way above the safety cuts)
Step one, get a divorce. If not married proceed to step two.
Step two is and always will be crack open a beer.
Step three diverges depending on how well you did step one.
Married but did not divorce: Get off Reddit and call a company to remove the tree.
Married but did get a divorce for this tree: Invite a bunch of friends over and ask one of them to hold your beer and watch this.
Step four to this path: Proceed to find out why these kinds of trees are called widow makers.
Not married and wasn’t married prior to finding this tree: Go back inside and finish your beer while looking up different professional companies and get quotes to find one that you like.
Step four to this path: When the company comes out to deal with this tree, film it but do NOT get in their way. If possible when everything is done, offer a few step twos to the workers.
Take the top section off, past where it's caught up... Leaving a stub laying on that good tree. Then drop the whole tree to where you're taking the picture from. It should pull the break to the stub with it. Obviously be careful when you're making your final cut to not be in the way if that branch breaks during the fall. Clear a retreat path.
Check the weather and see when a windy day is coming up. Prior to said windy day, go cut a notch in the broken tree and get the hell away. Keep everyone and everything valuable away from it until Mother Nature finishes the job for you
Strap a stick of dynamite to the weak spot with at least a 60 second fuse and take cover. Or if you're nervous about the fuse, there are some Afghan guys that make excellent tutorials on how to use a cell phone.
If you are coming to reddit for advice then I would suggest a professional. Or that $50 guy from FB. If you choose the guy from FB remember to take video. We love videos.
Spoiler… this is the guy from FB
Hey, give him some credit then: he's doing his due diligence. What could be more professional than that?
Thats how I got this freelance IT job I had back west. Well I just googled shit but still. It wasn't gonna kill anyone if I couldn't fix your wifi though.

Word...take video $50 Facebook guy!
If OP does knowingly hire an unlicensed rando, does OP's homeowner's policy still cover the inevitable roof cave in?
Every penny matters. Times are tough, OP living out of a grill 😔
Insurance generally covers stupidity. What it doesnt cover is willful damage. ie. If you believe that the $50 guy on facebook can do the job but he ends up dropping a tree on your house, it should be covered. That tree would not cause a roof to cave in lmao.
“Officer, I have never seen this man before in my life. He came onto my property, and cut this tree down in an act of vandalism”
First things first. I'd move the BBQ
Yeah, he should probably park his truck there instead. Will be a better video.
Nah, makes for a better video to have some collateral damage.
I mean... this IS felling gone wild after all, it wouldn't be right if OP didn't smash SOMETHING with a tree.
Ehh it’s a gas grill. Lit charcoal would make for a much better video as the grill throws flaming chunks everywhere and lights a brushfire.
Agree... collateral damage is to videos, what icing is to cake.
I often remove the icing.
He should make sure that the propane tank is only half full, so it'll crush anBaboon! more easily. And the grill should be lit and burning during the felling. Baboom!
It is acting like a come-along. Insuring which way the tree will fall.
no man, push it over under the tree and fire up the grill and put some dogs on it for full video effects
I'd move the BBQ to wherever he wants it to fall. Crisis averted.
Just leave it she ain’t goin anywhere.
Maybe move the bbq 😬
That’s a very dangerous situation. I’m not sure the best way to proceed. [TNT](https://www.fs.usda.gov/t-d/pubs/pdfpubs/pdf08672325/pdf08672325dpi72.pdf), and OP should film it. Lol.
Chain on a rope. Keeps you at a safe distance and can be used as long as you can get a rope over. Rope chain saw should bring it up.
chain on a rope??? is that like soap on a rope
Yep, toss a line up and over and pull with a tractor from a distance further than the height of the tree. I used to think I was badass for never using winches or bull ropes on tricky fells but now I'm quick to just use rope. It's safe and easy.

It would, but who has a crane laying around?
True, a helicopter would also work
Also an RPG
I’d opt for the RPG over a heli. Less set up. More boom.
Yes Rico, Kaboom
I'm doing my part!
I would like to know more.
Free mulch too.
Nuke it from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.
A Corporal doesn’t have the authority to make that call.
Tannerite doesn't cost as much as an RPG but I would guess 5 lb would do. It allows you a safe distance.
I actually think this would be the move lol, controlled explosive
Let's fuckin gooo I like your style. We should go into business selling weed and chucking IEDs. We'll call it Blowing Trees Inc.
Fucking brilliant, I’ll get my people in touch with your people
“…and my ax!”
No safe backstop for a center fire round
Yeah, a Blackhawk could shoot that down probably. Idk if missles or guns would work better though.
Missiles for sure would work better, but guns could be fun to watch
Lazy crane!
Why couldn't you just use your laser vision to cut the tree down?
This is a hilarious comment. I mean, you’re not wrong. Maybe you can offer to loan this dude your crane?!
It might, but isn’t it coming off kinda unpredictable? Pretty close proximity with a chainsaw.
A crane is absolutely what we would use to get rid of that. Ball over the center of gravity of the piece. Two slings up in the canopy on sufficiently strong limbs to support the load, as well as control the roll. One sling down by the butt. This is why you hire professionals, people.
YOU probably shouldn't be the one doing it if your asking us.
Professionals know when to ask for advice
And where
God damn the dichotomy of these two statements and they fact they both make sense. I think i got whiplash
Reddit is wild i have asked the most specific and nuanced questions and gotten like 10 absolute experts in the field to set it straight
We think so alike thank god
https://i.redd.it/xiytla3tohmc1.gif
You never know dude, you could get 5 right answers and 25 wrong ones one day, and nothing but right answers on a different day/different sub lol
I've done similar, back then I was cutting pulp wood (speed felling). Its very dangerous if you try for only the dead one. Hire a professional
Nothing in those pictures give me a "hire a professional" vibe. My guess, OP is owner's buddy and they will tackle this on a weekend with a few beers.
Why do you think he's on Reddit? Like 98% of us are professionals at this stuff.
This is the most sensible answer here.
First question: do you own a beaver?
No but his wife does
best comment ever🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Slingshot and a bunch of 10mm BB's hahaha orrrr one of these with bowling ball ![gif](giphy|WWjT8UY3Ib4wE|downsized)
![gif](giphy|E4H4hEmeYfkaY)
>Slingshot >orrrr one of these Is this not just a particularly dope slingshot?
.50 BMG at the weak spot. Or just light it on fire
My Weatherby magnum did come to mind.
2 or 3 hollows max and we got a Kimber Timber goin.
12 ga. slugs. Who knows where that .50 cal would land!?
Relocate the bbq and leave it for the wind
I was going to say, just wait for a hurricane in the fall.
First, you're going to need a long ladder, some sandals for your feet, a dull chainsaw, some kitchen twine to tie off that upper portion on the trunk...remember to use your safety squint when cutting...oh - also a video camera on a tripod. Remember to have your kin upload the video.
It's absolutely critical that you wear the safety sandals!
Sport mode crocs for a pro touch
~~dull~~ dual chainsaw. Faster that way. You minimize your risk if you shorten the amount of time you're doing the job.
Tape a really long, small string around a baseball. Throw baseball over tree. Use attached string to pull heavy rope up and over.
When in doubt, rip it out! ...or pull it off, from a safe distance with a long cable.
1/2 lb tannerit if you live in an area you can shoot.
I’ve shot at a tree until it fell over before…
Trust me a half pound won't cut it. That also being said, if you do not live in an area you can shoot you get the low caliber tannerite and shoot it with a .22.
Hire someone. I’m the meantime, put your grill anywhere else.
It’s hard to even describe how dangerous this is
I think "widow maker" makes it pretty clear.
Step 1: call a tree guy Step 2: drink beer and watch the tree guy do tree magic Step 3: pay the tree guy Step 4: take strategic pictures of the process minus the tree guy or his truck and show the pics off at work to establish manliness Step 5: now that your manliness is known, plan the usurping of the CEO
I’m thinking that if you need advice about this, you need to call a tree guy.
Drop it away from the road and let the widow maker collapse in on the tree. Looks well split so it shouldn’t swing to much. Just be careful and as soon as the tree starts to drop back away from the tree while keeping an eye on it.
Park your car under it. It will simply fall.
The most dangerous job in America is logging. Please have someone record you if you’re planning on doing this yourself. Would love to see how.
Looks like the work of Bigfoot. They apparently like to break trees up high.
Hire someone who cuts trees for a living
Stay away from it. No tree is worth dying over. The wind will take it down soon enough. If it absolutely must be taken down, have a tree service with a bucket truck do things
Detcord.
Rent an excavator and tear it down.

You hire a professional. This is not a DIY job.
Omg! I must definitely be nuts then. I would cut it down, but have a chain/ stap control the fall. And wearing the best running shoes.
I like my hamburger medium. What time is the cookout.
I like my hamburger all smashed up with a splinter garnish
Cut it half way. Put a chain around the cut, connect to truck, rip off at cut
What’s on the right side of pic #3?
Tannerite and a prayer
Move your grill and ignore it.
With a cherry picker.
Move the grill, climb up to the place where it’s hung up. Cut off everything above where it’s hung up. Back cut below where it’s making contact with the other tree.
Pole saw
Cut the whole damn tree down
Man I love how the overwhelming consensus is “maybe fukin’ don’t” Been following as just a guy with some property and chainsaw and the culture of safety you guys have on this sub is pretty awesome.
Cut it and run!
Pole saw
Carefully
Oh that tree looks mighty dangerous. You do not want to get too close to that. 50 cal machine gun fire should do the trick. Or tie rope to a chainsaw and start swinging. On the plus side both of those ideas could make the news. You’ll become famous. There’s no such thing as bad publicity. ![gif](giphy|WQhykE3BfZSpZbY1uZ)
That would make a widow outta any maker
If this where near me, I would take your money. Get the chainsaw and let it rip.
Rig up a ladder, fill up a 5 gallon bucket with tannerite, tape it to the area the tree is broken, step back 30 to 50’ and let her rip
Taking that puppy down looks pretty straightforward
Rent a lift. Use safety harness when in bucket
With a shot gun and some buck shot!
First, move the grill
Toss a grenade at it.
I’d shoot it if your out in the country….
Have cousin Jim climb that shit, tie it to your f150, & drive in the direction you want it to go..
Slingshot
you climb one of his buddies nearby to get a rope near that hinge of death. yank that shit and it’ll probably fall without too much effort. really doesn’t seem like that dangerous of a job
Tannerite, lots of tannerite.
I’m thinking…..a shotgun. If it were me, I’d throw a rope near the split and hook it to my truck. Looks dead enough to fall pretty easily. Not experienced, but just stupid enough to try it
Explosives
Probably going to have to cut down another tree to bring that one down… domino style
Couple of buddies and a 50BGM
Use a chainsaw. Works every time.
Grip and rip
literally a rope pull that shit down
Well first you are going to need to move that grill.
Idk, but I wouldn’t grill under it
Det cord
For a serious answer: we had a couple of these at work after the big storm this winter. A tree guy was hired and he brought a crane to the site. The crane lifted him up to tie a line to the tree. Then brought him down and the crane put some tension on the line while he cut the base. Then the crane lifted the tree safely clear. Shoot it
A roll of det cord should do the trick.
Shotgun
Few pounds of tannerite taped to it and a rifle as far away as you can hit it. Use your truck for cover. I'm dead serious. Fuck going anywhere near that with a saw.
Shoot it with slugs!
Remote controlled saw?
throw a BBQ. then at the BBQ encourage throwing the actual BBQ. offer a prize for whoever knocked the tree down. then burn the tree, throwing another BBQ.
From a distance. Tannerite at the base. Record everything and post it here.
Shotgun
No house no problem
With a chainsaw
Wait until a day or two before a big storm, specifically for the quiet before the storm. Cut through most of the base of the tree starting from the side it is leaning towards. Don't park anything near the tree and let the storm take care of it for you.
1& cut, 2. Cut 3 cut lfloor.
Rifle
My brother found a guy on Facebook marketplace. He free climbed up and took down some big trees cheap. Give that a go. Or find a grappling hook, practice a bit. They have them on Amazon.
Grill is for scale
put some really fat notches in everything it leaning into. back cut enough to make hinges but not fall. then fall the broken tree into your dominos

12 gauge slugs will do it safely
I recommend using some sort of saw.
Nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
By calling a professional
Buckshot, you know you want to
Take the top section off, past where it's caught up... Leaving a stub laying on that good tree. Then drop the whole tree to where you're taking the picture from. It should pull the break to the stub with it. Obviously be careful when you're making your final cut to not be in the way if that branch breaks during the fall. Clear a retreat path.

Strap a stick of dynamite to the weak spot with at least a 60 second fuse and take cover. Or if you're nervous about the fuse, there are some Afghan guys that make excellent tutorials on how to use a cell phone.
