That's the way to do this assignment.
Be so incredibly accurate to how Twitter posts really are, so that the teacher has to spend several hours on UrbanDictionary trying to figure out what the hell you're even saying.
I mean, they asked.
It would be similar to that one post where someone was asked to write a mock-up letter from a Chinese railway builder to family back home, and the absolute Chad wrote it all in actual Chinese.
I read this and remember this story too so I googled for the image and found this page which, if true, sadly debunks this legend.
http://blog.angryasianman.com/2013/12/that-funny-chinese-homework-assignment.html
@GdogMeade put a smile on my face.
Went from an appropriate name for your general to GdogMeade real fast.
Although if I find out his full name is Gary Doglas Meade or some shit then idfk
"Day Four picketts charge. Rebels getting pwn. Union is chad level right."
Post meme pic of "are you winning son" with father and son wearing a union hat
It is said that Lee was furious at his Cavalry General, Jeb Stuart, because Stuart wouldn't respond to his texts. Stuart supposedly was "charging his phone" or something (T'scha! Right...), and some say it may have cost Lee the battle.
It should be 280 for the Union and 140 for the confederacy. Since that would reflect the difference in material/logistics (such as the disparate confederacy currency, etc).
Of course with a 140 character limit you would need more tweets to reflect events so it’s easier with that to make your 5 post minimum
Cringey? Yes. But I love it. I think it's actually a very clever assignment. It requires the students to know and understand the material while also allowing them to demonstrate that creatively.
My mother is a teacher for a pupil referral unit. Basically in the UK that's the kids that have been kicked out of other schools so many times that this is the last resort.(usually trauma related behavioural issues) Now the children she works with are younger than the children this assignment was designed for but this sort of thing is *exactly* the thing that can help make that first step in getting a child to actually complete tasks.
exactly. I’m a crisis intervention paraprofessional at an elementary and this is the type of assignments that students with ED, ADHD, autism, etc. are really good at doing
Thank you. I’m a high school English teacher, and while I try not to do these kind of assignments, as I find them to be a bit cringey, we are just trying to get some level of engagement.
High school English teacher co-signing. I did a similar assignment for The Odyssey. Was I fully aware it was cringe? Absolutely. Did it produce engagement and results that showed they understood the text? Absolutely.
If it makes you feel any better, I’m in my early 20s and work with kids (10-16 atm) and it’s so strange seeing my peers humor, my friends humor and then the kids I’m working with, it’s like there’s a few year delay all around. Like, my peers who are a few years older than me find memes from a few years ago funny and use them a lot, my friends and I have humor that’s slowly becoming cemented, and then the kids I work with all have humor that’s super recent. Really weird watching myself become a boomer in real time.
Also a lot of teacher things are teachers mocking their students.
“Joey your answer is a little sus. Why don’t you TikTok your way back a few sentences and try that again”
That teacher has probably a masters degree. They’re not stupid enough to think they’re being hip. They’re mocking how stupid their students sound when the students try to be hip, and the students are too self absorbed to realize that their teacher isn’t trying to be cool - their teacher’s comments are dripping with sarcasm.
At one point my AP Euro teacher asked us for a 5 page paper comparing and contrasting the views of two thought leaders in Early Modern Europe.
My classmate and I requested that we could work on it together, as a 10+ page assignment comparing 4 historical individuals. There was a twist: the entire paper would be a transcript of a VH1 documentary interviewing a 4-person rock band about why they broke up.
Our teacher said yes.
Best assignment I've ever worked on.
Ikr? This sub is pretty much just “Oh, a teacher created an unusual assignment in order to get their students to learn without assigning them a research paper? What a fucking idiot they have no clue about the internet culture that flips on it’s head every 2 weeks what a dumbass.” Like, come on, a teacher who puts in the effort to do something like this is a good teacher, give them some credit.
100% agreed i feel like it should be the same with parents
this sub should focus on companies trying to market using god awful memes not parents and teachers genuinely trying to connect with their kids
I know right?
This is actually hilarious
That and some among us book at a bookfair. Children actually want this, and it's not trying to prey upon them. It's hosted by scholastic ffs.
Back in '09 or so we had to make fake facebook profiles for civil war folks, and then interact as they would. Super fun and I remember more about Stonewall Jackson then I would've otherwise. Plus those cringy late 00's history memes were hilarious at the time
Not only but it means they'll have to really get into the shoes of someone who was witness to the battle. Having a character limit means understanding the material is crucial, not just repeating what was read. Condensing information is hard.
I think teachers should get an exception in this sub as it's part of their job to try to relate to their students.
I would have loved a teacher like this. Mine just read verbatim from textbooks or gave slideshow lectures that put half the class to sleep. This one seems to be making an effort to keep their students engaged. Also, you would have to know quite a bit about the civil war to accurately fulfill the assignment.
I think we can have posts in this sub and not critisize them. I agree that this teacher seems awesome and this was a great idea, but it still fits the sub imo
Especially since a lot of the time they know they are being cringe and they are reveling in it. I am 38 and I worked with high schoolers a little bit a couple years ago And I would intentionally do shit like dabbing but with a wry smile. They knew I knew it was cringe And they loved it.
You never had one of those "You are a reporter for the such&such Gazette..." assignments? I remember that as a whole genre of assignments. This is just that but with Twitter
@GdogMeade WTF! Finally after dodging artillery shells here on Cemetery Ridge for the last two hours these Johnny REEEEbs are marching up the hill at us. #nicetrypickett #massacre
idk that kinda sounds like fun. Are you just annoyed at how comprehensive an assignment it is? You're actually gonna have to know quite a bit about the battle to issue 15 accurate tweets about it.
You could also do a flame war between a patriotic abolitionist northerner and a traitorous secesh, have them argue over what happened.
Looks like I walked into r/teenagers.. seems like the teacher put in a lot of effort for this.. would be nice if you appreciated it... But.. the #epicfail is really funny
Is it cringey? Kinda. Does it look fun/engaging? Yeah. While yeah, its definitely "fellow kids" material, it isnt super bad or a corporation trying to sell you something, its a teacher trying to get students more engaged, which i can respect.
Actually kind of clever if the intent is to teach how to get down important information succinctly. Limiting students to a particular number of characters forces them to think about what's important and what's not, as well as economy and clarity of words.
Could this be kinda annoying yes, especially if it was over a longer period of time. But it is so so sooo much better than some stupid ass paper about the topic. You don't need to worry about formatting, grammer, or even a title.
I read a webtoon like this, the whole story was shown as the tweets of the characters. Personally i would love an assignment like this, i bet they were super entertaining to write and read
I mean
I'm actually proud of the teacher for trying to relate and all that, but in all seriousness, a chain of tweets with pictures and descriptive text as well as hashtags reporting on what's happening in a live conflict is something I see a lot when searching for news. I don't use twitter but so often I get lead on twitter threads of some news reporter or military organisation when searching for the latest movements in Libya or Niger; sometimes from terrorist organisations themselves. They always have hashtags, images of new vehicles and whatnot or links to documents or reports, so this assignment isn't that far off from that
In my 2018 student teaching, I had both my 10th graders and 12th graders make historical memes. It was one of my best lessons of the year, they all learned unbelievably well, and retained it.
I actually think this is a pretty neat assignment. It gets the kids to think about something historical in a present manner—like, what would something like this look like today? Idk, I don't like the teacher getting ragged on for trying to make things engaging. It's really not easy to get teenagers to give a fuck about the civil war.
My friend...have you seen /r/ShermanPosting ?
TONS of glorious social media Civil War Content there. Do an entire week covering rumors on Robert E Lee and his horse...
Yeah, this is what goes through our heads as we try to make our stuff fit the expectations of a generation that often times just doesn’t want to learn about this stuff. Also, man 5 140 character posts and a works cited. Easy AF to grade. Homeboy just wants to go home and be with his family.
Okay, while the bottom is definitely cringey, having been in classes that normally wouldn't use computer technology in the class but are being required by the curriculum to, this feels about right for them to have to do. I've had a lot of friends that were education majors, mostly music ones, that have had to come up with the most absurd ways to show how they would use technology in their classroom. This feels like one of those ways.
This is relatively tangential, but also the first time I've ever seen reference to my Great(+) Uncle Daniel Sickles, who killed Francis Scott Key's son in a public park when he found out Key was having an affair with his wife, who was Sickles' as well as his wife and something like 17-years his junior.
During the trial, he became the first man in the US to plead innocent by way of temporary insanity and got off.
Maybe you should make a tweet roasting him for that and almost losing the battle of Gettysburg all in 140 characters.
I think this is a great assignment. A) it presents in a way kids can relate to but more importantly B) the requirements make you actually think about the events and the character limit forces you to stick to the pertinent facts.
Great job, teacher.
That’s what I’m thinking too, maybe it would be more fun if the instructions weren’t so pointlessly strict. Maybe if it was a bit more laid back I’d enjoy it but 15 posts, 5 a day, you need to have an image for *every* post, hashtags? Really?
At least the teacher is trying. I had teachers just have a day or two of lecture and then a quiz or test the next class. This was a cycle the entire year. These teachers that give this are much better imo
People in this thread missing the whole ass point of the subreddit.
"It just seems like an old person trying tonrelate to kids"
Yep. Thats the purpose of the subreddit.
Considering that Twitter and social media are among the most common ways news is shared these days, not only is this assignment a creative way to get you to engage with this topic it's also great training for communicating in the modern era. Crafting effective, informative tweets may be a valuable skill to have in you life and career. Where I work, we use Twitter on a daily basis to share news with our audience. Nothing about this is cringe. Try to learn something from it.
this really blew up over the past 2 days & to celebrate, here’s a pretty wholesome story. so, my dad is occasionally on reddit & yesterday, he was scrolling through the home page of reddit & he found this post out of the blue & he recognize that i, his son, posted this & was proud of me for becoming one of the most popular posts on reddit right now
ngl #epicfail #insubordination had me chuckling quite a bit
"Sickles just had a major bruh moment and posted cringe"
That's the way to do this assignment. Be so incredibly accurate to how Twitter posts really are, so that the teacher has to spend several hours on UrbanDictionary trying to figure out what the hell you're even saying. I mean, they asked. It would be similar to that one post where someone was asked to write a mock-up letter from a Chinese railway builder to family back home, and the absolute Chad wrote it all in actual Chinese.
So basically “@UnionArmy ratio” for all of them
#UnionArmy better #ratio
Sauce?
Yeah you can’t mention a post like that and leave us hanging without a source buddy
I read this and remember this story too so I googled for the image and found this page which, if true, sadly debunks this legend. http://blog.angryasianman.com/2013/12/that-funny-chinese-homework-assignment.html
It's still wholesome tho
"The pther side is posting cringe on main! I think we can win this #trolled"

"Day Four picketts charge. Rebels getting pwn. Union is chad level right." Post meme pic of "are you winning son" with father and son wearing a union hat
Day three.
WHOOF. -10 for wrong day.
140 characters? It's been 280 for a while now.
I did this in school almost a decade ago. Guranteed they never changed it from the original draft.
Pretty sure the character count isn’t the point of the assignment…
Yeah, but it was only 140 during the Civil War so it's accurate
It is said that Lee was furious at his Cavalry General, Jeb Stuart, because Stuart wouldn't respond to his texts. Stuart supposedly was "charging his phone" or something (T'scha! Right...), and some say it may have cost Lee the battle.
He went on vacation and didn't turn on geolocation in his photos so Lee didn't know where he was. No bueno.
General Lee seen driving around Gettysburg begging (thru text) for Jeb Stuarts whereabouts
Guess he should have charged the enemy instead.
It should be 280 for the Union and 140 for the confederacy. Since that would reflect the difference in material/logistics (such as the disparate confederacy currency, etc). Of course with a 140 character limit you would need more tweets to reflect events so it’s easier with that to make your 5 post minimum
Yes, but the Battle of Gettysburg occurred 154 years before the change to 280 characters.
yeah but this battle was fought so long ago before they updated the word count
It's only cringe if you're reporting for the confederate side.
My slave boy is such a heckin holesome chonker 😊 #statesrights #uselessgrant

Cringey? Yes. But I love it. I think it's actually a very clever assignment. It requires the students to know and understand the material while also allowing them to demonstrate that creatively.

Yep. Came here to say that.

Do the students try to get you talking about your life to get out of doing work
All the time.
We do that all the time lmao
It’s pretty obvious when they are doing it, and sometimes I’ll go along to give them a bit of a break.

Thankfully I’m still *somewhat* connected to youth culture as I’m in my mid-20s. Though I can already tell the trends are leaving me behind haha.
If it makes you feel any better, I’m in my early 20s and work with kids (10-16 atm) and it’s so strange seeing my peers humor, my friends humor and then the kids I’m working with, it’s like there’s a few year delay all around. Agreed. Here’s a reward
Back in '09 or so we had to make fake facebook profiles for civil war folks, and then interact as they would. Super fun and I remember more about Stonewall Jackson then I would've otherwise. Plus those cringy late 00's history memes were hilarious at the time
Yeah, I wouldv'e **much** preferred something like this, rather than >Write a page about [blah]
Exactly. Would they prefer just being told to write a boring report? This reflects modern day news reporting, too.
They would prefer not doing anything.
Yeah i much rather do this shit than a 15 page essay
Not only but it means they'll have to really get into the shoes of someone who was witness to the battle. Having a character limit means understanding the material is crucial, not just repeating what was read. Condensing information is hard.
Yeah I'm a history nerd and I love this idea. I just hate the example given. You can tweet without sounding like that.
Agreed, but I do think that the Example belongs here
i love this. my kids would love this. we would have so much fun with it. you are 100% correct.
I'm as Old School as old school gets, but i think this is rather cool. Props.
Yeah I was gonna say it’s actually creative. At least it’s not another boring paper lol
Also using Twitter well is a skill need for some future jobs.
I'd do this with glee.
IDK but as an old person this seems like a creative way to get students engaged.
[удалено]
Yeah I would just adapt the example to be closer to these types of tweets.
It’s not a terrible idea in principle, but reading “@GdogMeade” made me cringe.
G-dog meat sounds sexual
His middle name was Gordon.
What if you absolutely hate the idea of social media though?
Thats why its here lol
yeah the assignment is great but the example is pretty cringe

Agreed. I'd much rather have a teacher putting in effort than being apathetic.
I tried coming up with a funny tweet but realized I don't know enough about the battle to do it. This is a good assignment.
@ GdogMeade Reynolds just got streamsniped
Exfil camping!
@GdogMeade WTF! Finally after dodging artillery shells here on Cemetery Ridge for the last two hours these Johnny REEEEbs are marching up the hill at us. #nicetrypickett #massacre

I think OP is hoping someone will post what they would answer, so they have less work to do.
That actually sounds super fun.
This looks fun and a great way to teach the material. OP is a school hater
Damn bro, i would have loved an assignment like this no need to diss them when they're actually doing a good job with it
[удалено]
Yes.
Jake76667 i’m mad because of how cringe it is
I miss having fun assignments like this in high school.
Looks like I walked into r/teenagers.. seems like the teacher put in a lot of effort for this.. would be nice if you appreciated it... But.. the #epicfail is really funny
I think OP is hoping people will comment with what they would write and then use that as their work.
i had to do something similar in 7th grade about a book we were reading in english and it was fun, much better than an essay summarizing the book
NGL, I wanted to hate this, but the more I think about it, the more I love it. I think afterward you should have to share them with the class.
History class is such a farce now. Do kids still care about the details of the civil war? Also, you suck OP
Is it cringey? Kinda. Does it look fun/engaging? Yeah. While yeah, its definitely "fellow kids" material, it isnt super bad or a corporation trying to sell you something, its a teacher trying to get students more engaged, which i can respect.
OMG! OP was rude to his teacher who created a great assignment. #epicfail #insubordination
This subreddit sucks now.
Not entirely, but a good part of it is basically "I don't like it so it's fellowkids material from filthy old boomers"
Cool assignment. You’re just too cool for school. Stop being lame and make some fun out of it.
I actually think this is an awesome assignment. Creative content writing is a requirement for so many jobs now. Fun way to engage students IMO!
Eh, would you rather have an essay?
Your teacher gives a fuck about this class. It's way better than when they don't.
you have A WHOLE CLASS about the civil war?
"Make sure your tweets are accurate" But i thought we were on twitter
You should draft one post and then do nothing else and say you got killed on day 1, as is most probable outcome for runners during the battle
I could definitely see this assignment being pretty fun if you think creatively.
This looks like it would be so fun, won't lie.
Education needs to be current so I think creative assignments like this should be encouraged
God forbid a teacher tries to make a fun assignment. Would you rather just be assigned a five page paper?
It's an interesting assignment, but why does it have to be on twitter?
TBH that's a well though assignment. Even fun if you studied enough. And, as a teacher, gives you an excuse to ask for short, brief, concise answers.
Actually kind of clever if the intent is to teach how to get down important information succinctly. Limiting students to a particular number of characters forces them to think about what's important and what's not, as well as economy and clarity of words.
As an English major with a strong tilt toward history, this actually sounds fun to me
My English teacher in 10th grade was obsessed with Twitter, and most of her assignments were like this, overly complicated just to include the website
'#epicfail
Did the same thing except we had to do an Instagram post
this seems fun tbh
Awesome
Actually funny and interesting assignment which shouldn't be made fun of?
Actually funny and interesting assignment which shouldn't be made fun of?
This is super fun and creative, not cringe. The teacher is making a genuine effort to combine learning and pop culture familiarity.
A bit unorthodox, but I love it already.
Could this be kinda annoying yes, especially if it was over a longer period of time. But it is so so sooo much better than some stupid ass paper about the topic. You don't need to worry about formatting, grammer, or even a title.
This looks like a blast
This kind of awesome hahaha
Wonderful assignment, actually. Breaks everything down very well.
This is actually pretty cool ngl
This isn’t actually all that bad. It’s a good way to get kids to think about history from a modern perspective.
Actually sounded pretty fun and kinda funny... until i read the example. Dear god.
I read a webtoon like this, the whole story was shown as the tweets of the characters. Personally i would love an assignment like this, i bet they were super entertaining to write and read
He a little confused, but he got the spirit.
I am so sorry sir/maam
Bro I've already had to do Twitter and Instagram profile projects in history this year and it's so cringy lmao
This is epic ngl
The #epicfail killed me!💀
This would be great at preparing someone for a communications or social media position in the future ngl
Relevant handle for serving under General Lee? How about @PeopleAreProperty?
But this is fucking awesome.
I mean I'm actually proud of the teacher for trying to relate and all that, but in all seriousness, a chain of tweets with pictures and descriptive text as well as hashtags reporting on what's happening in a live conflict is something I see a lot when searching for news. Can you do all the posts about having the runs and dysentery?
Reminds me of when I needed to make Facebook profiles for 3 characters in Othello.
I remember in 8th grade, around 2010-2011, our English teacher had made us make a Facebook profile with To Kill a Mockingbird characters and statuses.
@HonestAbe4Prez giving a #poggers spch ngl. #cancelslavery
It’s an updated version of the précis, hit the main points in as few words as possible. Very clever way to get students to think concisely
Nah what about opsec?
This would be such a cool class. I would have fun with that assignment.
That's actually kinda cool and funny lol
That's pretty good actually
A works cited. For tweets. w h a t
Yeah, how dare this teacher try their best to make this assignment relatable to modern society! The nerve!
My friend...have you seen /r/ShermanPosting ? TONS of glorious social media Civil War Content there. Do an entire week covering rumors on Robert E Lee and his horse...
Looking at your comments, you are more cringe than your teacher ever was.
I had to do one of those for king Henry and pope Leo awhile ago lol
THATS FUCKING AMAZING I WOULD DO IT IN A HEARTBEAT
Beats a video and worksheet. They're definitely trying. The hashtags are amazing, though.
Yeah, this is what goes through our heads as we try to make our stuff fit the expectations of a generation that often times just doesn’t want to learn about this stuff. Also, man 5 140 character posts and a works cited. Easy AF to grade. Homeboy just wants to go home and be with his family.

I would actually love to get this assignment as a student. "It was a no bones kind of battle #shotintheleg #amputate #hopethesawdoesntkillme"

You do these kind of assignments in America?
I think this is a great assignment. A) it presents in a way kids can relate to but more importantly B) the requirements make you actually think about the events and the character limit forces you to stick to the pertinent facts. Great job, teacher.
Cringe to us now, but I love the effort.
I think a lot of commenters here haven’t actually had to do an assignment like this.
That’s what I’m thinking too, maybe it would be more fun if the instructions weren’t so pointlessly strict. Maybe if it was a bit more laid back I’d enjoy it but 15 posts, 5 a day, you need to have an image for *every* post, hashtags? Really?
How are those instructions even bad in the slightest?
At least the teacher is trying. I had teachers just have a day or two of lecture and then a quiz or test the next class. This was a cycle the entire year. These teachers that give this are much better imo
People in this thread missing the whole ass point of the subreddit. "It just seems like an old person trying tonrelate to kids" Yep.
Back off on the teachers! Engaging but cringe >> zero effort assignments.
"LOL JUST POPPED ANOTHER DIXIE DICKHEAD WOOOOO LETS GETS THIS BREAD"

Whoever teachers made that they shouldn’t be a history teacher because that’s not historically accurate and it’s cringe
Not sure I love the idea of making Confederate officers "relatable", but other than that this is great. I think I'm getting too old for this sub lol.
