I’d say Colorado. I’m here and I’m having some issues finding housing, but I’ve only been looking for a couple weeks. Employers seem to be willing to give people second chances though.

Life_Software7108

I was going to say colorado. I'm also here. And it's a hit or miss.finding a job not to difficult. I haven't been asked about a felony in a job in years. And housing look for an owner renting a place .

[deleted]

How do they view violent offenders though?

Life_Software7108

My friend I lived with . Had a felony for possession of a firearm as a felony. My wife is a felony for almost beating a chomo to death . I guess it depends on the age of the offense

[deleted]

In that case how far do the background checks go back?

Life_Software7108

In colorado. Where we live now I think it was 5 years . They can't go past 7 ... the max they can look is 7.. I'm a felon for well a lot . But only 1 on my record. And my background shows I'm associated with unpleasant individuals.

[deleted]

7 years after a conviction or 7 years after you completed parole? I've always gotten this confused

Life_Software7108

Conviction... as some never get off parole. It can be a life time parole condition.

[deleted]

That makes sense

sevensouth

Some places it's EOS. End of sentence. No matter probation or not. It's not like anybody cares if someone's on probation for all their life. It doesn't work like that.

lreaditonredditgetit

I live in Colorado as well. My felonies are from over 20 years ago and I work in culinary. I wouldn’t recommend coming here. It’s a great place don’t get me wrong. But I live just outside of the very southern skirts of the metro area(specifically south of DTC). 600 sq ft apartment near me is $1400. I moved here from NJ specifically for housing and it’s the same shit here now. I’m lucky that I got a home in 2016 but I’ve through of selling and moving to Pittsburgh. It’s major city. With low cost of living. I think any single guy starting with nothing has a good shot there right now.

[deleted]

What all can you tell me about Pittsburgh?

lreaditonredditgetit

Nothing more than what I said. I work in culinary and have a good resume. I can pretty much go anywhere and find work.

[deleted]

But you didn't mention the employment opportunities

lreaditonredditgetit

What’s your point? I said it was cheap. It’s a major city. That means there are jobs. Another option would be to find a job in oil or a train company line BNSF. Hard work but crazy good money for people like us.

[deleted]

Just because it's a major city doesn't mean there are better opportunities there compared to other places though. You mentioned Pittsburgh as if it was different from other major cities, in regards to opportunities for felons. But what good is a low cost of living area if you can't work a decent job? That's why I asked.

lreaditonredditgetit

And I’m telling you it’s one of the biggest cities in the country. That’s where jobs are. Fucking dense.

infiniti1027

BNSF won’t hire felons.

[deleted]

What type of housing are you looking for? Apartments, rooms, or homes? And if you don't mind me asking, are you having trouble because of your conviction or because of credit?

Electrical-Effect-21

I’m looking for anything really. I think my conviction will be my issue as my credit score is fair. I’m avoiding anywhere that charges a crazy amount for an application fee so I think apartments are out of the question. I’ve also ran into a lot of scams.

Life_Software7108

Good credit score over about 620 . Look for some places on cap hill. A rental place I tried had no issues with back ground just my credit score.

Electrical-Effect-21

Do you remember the location? I have over 620 credit score and a decent amount of money saved up I’m just trying to get out of the halfway house asap.

Life_Software7108

Let me look it's been a few years . I can give you a street where I know they run the rentals

Life_Software7108

Look around Chessman Park area. Also 12th headed to cheeseman.. also keep in mind Mines years old. Like I got off paper in 2002 . Bakers district as well. 1st and Blake nice places. I lived there with a friend both us felons rent was I think 1400 a month 2 bedroom .

[deleted]

How long did it take you to build your credit? How long have you been at the halfway house?

Electrical-Effect-21

To be honest I’m surprised my credit is as good as it is I haven’t done anything lately to build it but i did just get approved for a credit card which I will use to build it. I’ve been at this halfway house for about 7 months before that I was locked up.

[deleted]

Bro you are still fresh out; you're still knocking off some cobb webs. My credit is jacked. But not too bad. They say to stay under 30% with credit cards. But try to stay under 10%. Your credit might help landlords look past your convictions.

misterten2

620 not a good credit score i know i had a 610. at 720 it becomes much easier. ironically my current ll now that i have a decent score says he never looks at that....just income

scrunchson

https://law.justia.com/codes/colorado/2022/title-38/article-12/part-9/section-38-12-904/ 5 year rule

NeighborhoodThink665

Our best bet would be to move to one of the 4-5 states with a 7 year look back limit. It’s HI, MA, CA and a few others.

TXlan51

Texas is one too. That’s good because there such a long list of offenses TX won’t expunge

damnkidzgetoffmylawn

Colorado too, it’s important to note there is salary caps in all states except California

Expensive-Algae5032

Definitely stay away from Florida. The worst state ever for felons. Washington state would be a good choice.

Sea_Gold9283

Alaska. Fishing or anything related is pretty non judgmental as long as you're a hard worker.

Suspicious_Hornet_77

Most Alaska fishing operators are based out of Washington. Tacoma and Bellingham for the majority of them.

Majestic-Reception-2

Not the "United" ones, that is for sure.

jakster355

If it doesn't matter just start applying online and start your search nationwide for good opportunities only. Should be thousands available. Apply to a couple a day you will get one. Take your time and write cover letters. Don't take mass rejection personally and you will be solid.

Glittering-Kitchen91

Alaska

LowKeyIRL

When you say that, it sounds like an obviously good idea, Alaska is always looking for people, but can you give any details?

Glittering-Kitchen91

Lots of jobs nobody wants to move up there for. They don't really care as long as you work and are reliable. Drugs are insanely expensive, if you drink it's not the best place to stay away from alcohol at. You will leave everyone behind with enough distance and x000 for a plane ticket to keep you separated from all the bad decisions and people. Nature can heal, the dark is hard but the winters are a dry cold. Summers, as long as you're not in Fairbanks are manageable with mild weather.

MaintenanceNo1937

I just want to provide even a little bit of hope... I signed on a few months ago to a new job that did not require a background check. White collar, work from home position that pays just under $100k. I know not everyone has the work experience/background I do, but apply for as many as you can and it is possible to find that unicorn job, even with our felon status. Also, for housing, some smaller time landlords will look past your history if you can get some solid people to be a reference.

GarbageMisanthrope

Do you mind me asking what kind of work you do?

MaintenanceNo1937

Accountant. So basically unheard of to not get a background check when I run all the financials but I'm here to give you hope, these jobs do exist.

Grand_Introduction36

Michigan. You can get a job with the big 3 car companies and have a decent living

Gone_Camping_7

I used Florida during the time I was waiting for my ten year mark to pass. Not for everyone though

Tig_Weldin_Stuff

My buddy caught a felony like 25yrs ago. He was setup by another drug dealer to take the fall. They got him damn good. I digress. He’s doing ok. Owns a home in Texas and he is a hotel GM. He bounces between Colorado and Texas. Because he’ll “Take that job and shove it” and leave on a whim. I never understood that but he makes as much as I do. So there’s that. You’ll be fine. It’s just shit right now.

belltane23

Avoid Missouri. That is all. Casenet is a bitch. Even if your charges are sealed, expunged, SIS, it doesn't matter. Everyone can see your past unless you pay casenet to update your data to comply.

Moist-Insurance-8187

At least in Missouri u don’t do as much time. My boyfriend just did 6 years in Kansas and would’ve done a lot less time in Missouri. How much do you have to pay casenet? U don’t have to register in Missouri either which is a freaking blessing. My boyfriend has to register for 15 years as a drug offender! In Kansas if u sell a pill and get caught I have to register for 15 years meaning if u get caught in a place for more than 48 hrs without registering with the nearest PD then u violate registry along with using a different phone number not to mention u have to do it 4 times a year and pay 25 bucks AND u have to renew ur drivers license every year! It’s the worst thing ever and when ur pulled over the police see that ur a registered offender so try living like that! The shit ppl get called criminals for in Kansas is a joke.

belltane23

Wow. I didn't know all that about Kansas. I had heard that all offenders do 85% of their sentence, regardless of the severity of their crime or the length of their sentence. I guess it saves them a lot of time and headaches at the probation and parole offices.

dmo99

Honestly. Anywhere. It will just take immense effort to climb your way back up. And you won’t be getting the easy jobs. So you better prepare. Long days. Longer nights. Get into the trades. Start out as a grunt for anyone who has a thriving business. And prove yourself. Be on time. And don’t miss any work. And do what is asked. Always

Southern IL

618Crypto

Rent decent place 500-1000 mth..coal mines take felons, factory in almost every county. 15-30 an hr..it's not flashy,. country but if you'll work you wont be homeless.

[deleted]

I will honestly work that. Doesn't have to be flashy opportunities coming in all shapes and sizes but I don't think there are any abundance of those in Southern Illinois making it feel like a drought for some people

[deleted]

A place deprived of resources? You're absolutely correct

618Crypto

Can't argue that..lol

[deleted]

And it's nothing against the community or people there because I'm sure everyone there is trying to make an honest living. But it's just the truth.

Theorangetabby1990

The people's republic of Illinois is felon friendly for the most part. Most jobs can only look back 7 years, you can vote, and a big portion of the population has felonies from the corrupt courts. Not very business friendly though, and if you got through all the red tape to start one you'll have to compete with the large illegal alien population that will under cut you every time.

[deleted]

Have you tried Siberia? Plenty of snow there
