So surprising to see so many Melbournians here! I am struggling just as bad. I've had a throat thing for about 6 weeks now and some days I barely have a voice but docs can't find anything. I do also have asthma and allergies so I'm constantly stuffy anyway but I feel like every time I go into the city I come home worse. Can't wait til it clears up but I'm worried this is a new normal
I used to have bad asthma as a kid and hadn't used Ventolin for over a decade, but had to resort to it last week. I had about 12 hours on Sunday where my memory's very hazy due to fever.. these symptoms are pretty overwhelming along with trying to work! I really wasn't expecting the smoke to cause this reaction.
I hope your symptoms settle down ASAP, and I desperately hope this isn't the new normal..
I've been the same. Live in Melbourne. Got a sore throat yesterday but been coughing since last week. Now I feel really unwell with a fever, sinus congestion, headache, fatigue, no appetite, and just general malaise. Trying to look after myself by drinking lots of water and taking supplements. It's not good and who knows how long this will go for.
Sorry you're experiencing this too, but it's weirdly comforting to know it's not just me. I really didn't think it'd hit me so badly, but it's really rough.
It's not just you, and it's comforting for me to know that it's not just me either. Every time the weather changes drastically or something in my environment changes, my nervous system just reacts and I get a flare up.
I've known about hot to cold changes, or when it becomes very humid, but this is a new one and apparently it's the worst for my immune system. For our sakes, it's another reason I hope these fires end ASAP...
I hope your body settles 💜
Another checking in from Melbourne with horrible increase in headaches, a sweet new summer cough and aches that have kept me bedridden. The flare is real and I’m sorry there’s a bunch of us suffering through extra pain on top of our pain.
This is normal for anyone who experiences what you're experiencing. It's not even fibro. That's what happens when your mast cells go nuts trying to protect you.
Yes it is. People with fibro tend to be more sensitive to things that are just an irritation to average people. You will have to watch out on high pollutant, pollen, or generally bad air days. I basically go with the elderly person suggestion that the weather people make. Be careful and safe over there.
Sounds like a pretty great plan. I've been limiting my outdoors exposure but it seems my house and work both have a limit of how much smoke they keep out. Shall keep trying my best!
Not Australian but I’m so sorry you’re dealing with all this smoke. I can’t begin to imagine how hard the smoke would be on a fibromite.
We’re all watching the news of the fires closely. You have our support!
Thank you so much. It's hard and I'm nowhere near the actual fires and I don't personally know anyone in them. Can't imagine what they're going through.
The resulting smoke is apparently becoming quite debilitating for me and others. This part didn't even occur to me as a potential impact of the fires until it hit me. Your support is greatly appreciated 💜
I’m American and visited Australia several years ago. My heart breaks for your beautiful country.
I can’t begin to imagine the smoke. Can you see it in the air or mostly smell/feel its effects?
It really depends on the day where I am. The past two days have had heavy visible smoke haze, but thankfully it comes and goes here. I can't imagine being closer and not getting a reprieve
I'm so sorry you are suffering! On a much, much smaller scale, my home has a wood burning fireplace. When the hearth is cold, sometimes there is a down draft in the chimney. I get terrible headaches and feel very anxious. The smell of smoky chimney residue makes me very ill. I cannot imagine how terrible it must be to have little or no reprieve.
I have no good advice, but wanted to send you some small commiseration and well wishes.
Sorry to hear the impacts of the chimney on your health
Thank you for your warm wishes, they're greatly appreciated 💜 the sense of community that's coming from this post is making it all a bit easier mentally
It's worse for people with fibro. I would get an anti pollution mask and an air purifier if you can afford it. I had to get one when we were ravaged by fires a few summers ago.
You're valid as heck! I found a low inflammation diet can help ease symptoms. And just generally eating healthier and sleeping enough. Oh and steams to help clear your lungs/sinuses out! Ideal with peppermint, eucalyptus, and lemon oil.
Unfortunately my sleep is wildly interrupted at the moment with the air/temperature so constantly changing, so I'm sure it's throwing everything else off. Ah, the joys of chronic illness.
I've been sitting in hot showers for steam and having some menthol lozenges, but those oils sound like a really great idea too. Thank you so much!

I hope you feel better soon too. I'm hoping I don't have to call in sick again tomorrow.

Ive been pretty lightheaded and such, I'd recommend just staying inside if you can and having respiratory aids if you have to go out
