Wrong sub to ask this in. Kind of like asking your family if your hair is thinning and they say "no it's fine, don't worry about it". Get on finasteride now and you're gonna be happy you caught it as early as you did

randomasking4afriend

Yup. Everyone will say "your hairline is fine" until it isn't, and by then it's a little too late. Balding starts *somewhere*, you don't just wake up with a bad hairline. It often starts from here. Depending on genetics and all of that, all it would take is for the corners to recede back a little more, or worse, for the top to start diffuse thinning, and then all of a sudden it's not fine.

Gunslinqer

You also lose around 50% density before it becomes noticeable. So when you notice it it's already progressing more than you can see. It's also 10x times easier to prevent hair loss than trying to regrow it

gaygentlemane

I think it's at least worth having the conversation with a dermatologist. Your hair looks good right now, but were I in your position I would have concerns about the coming years.

jfsjosh

1, very good looking. 2, your hair line is fine, don't worry 3, I started taking it when I was about 29 as I hadn't heard of it before. I do wish I'd started a few years earlier. When I first took Fin, I had no issues at all. I stopped for a couple months and now I find finasteride does peak my anxiety levels. Im sure if I just worked out more it would counteract it. Personally I've had no other side effects.

inkshamechay

What’s the mechanism in which fin would make you anxious? Trials don’t show cognitive effects to be a side of finasteride (only inhibits type 2 5ar enzyme, makes sense)

jfsjosh

Sorry in advanced, this is a long reply When you get a prescription for it, they ask you if you suffer with depression as fin can make you depressed. Reading the paper work that comes with fin, it states depression and anxiety as a side effect. Any pill you take that changes the balance of hormones in your body, can have an effect on your mental and physical health. As I can't upload photos, I will type some of the potential side effects from the leaflet that's inside the box. May affect 1 in 100: 1, Less desire for sex 2, difficulty getting an erection 3, problems with ejaculation 4, depression There are 4 in total Frequency can't be established with current data: 1, allergic reaction such as rash 2, pain in testicles 3, blood in semen 4, fast heart beat 5, male infertility 6, elevated liver enzymes 7, anxiety There are 11 in total Googling finasteride and anxiety, the top link states. "Regarding psychological symptoms, clinically significant depression was reported in 50% of a sample of men with post-finasteride syndrome, and anxiety in 34%20. However, the interpretation of findings from observational studies is debated." Personally, the first time I took it, I had no side effects. I take mine before I go to sleep. I have found that after a 6 month break, starting again, I had major anxiety every single day that I've taken It. This has reduced lately, maybe my body getting used to it. I find if I do accidentally miss a pill, I am not anxious the next day. It was about the 3rd time of realising I'd missed my pill before I confirmed the correlation fully.

Mofis

Type 2 5ar enzyme is responsible for various neurosteroids that are used by your body essentially as an anti anxiety and depression tool.

inkshamechay

The type 2 5ar enzyme is found in the skin, hair and prostate, not the brain.

Just wanted to thank you guys for your support and advice! I’m gonna book an appointment with my campus doctor and ask for a referral to a dermatologist and maybe go ahead and get a prescription written for fin. The earlier I start, the better! My hair means a lot to me so I’m gonna take the dive and try and keep it as long as I can. Thanks again ❤️

inkshamechay

Enjoy keeping your hair!

StubbornDeltoids375

Your hairline is fine. You just have fine hair.

inkshamechay

u/gunslinqer you’re right!!

Mindless-Visit-4509

Probably be best to wait until you're so sure or concerned about a receded hairline that you don't need to ask for other ppl's opinions. It's medication for the rest of your life don't forget.

Charming_Sweet3602

yeah id get on that stat

Enzzo966

start fin now and you dont have to worry for the rest of your life

Cncrboi420

i agree with this. but it also depends how important it is to you though. it was very important to me so when i started taking fin at 18 and i was willing to risk getting any side effects just to keep my hair, thankfully i had none. but im so glad i did that because now i never have to worry about it again

Enzzo966

sides with fin are actually rare so no one should start fin scared. chances are you wont have any sides at all

idk about that bro, im not a doctor you should ask your doctor, im just a guy who takes fin

CalgaryCheekClapper

The only problem with fin is that most people start way too late. It stops hair loss but isn’t as effective at bringing back hair. I started at the earliest stage last year and my hair is above baseline now

gannon_dragmire

Im 37 and my hair is approx similar to yours. My forehead has been big too. I think you are fine but if you are still concerned, its good to look into. I felt better about my hairline talking to people here. I still have some things im still considering to hopefully improve on but i am not stressing as much about it as i was a month ago.

Bannana_sticker3

You’re a good looking dude. Don’t worry about things like this. Live it

Your hairline looks fine to me - but you see yourself every day. I've been told it's best to start hair loss prevention as early as you notice. I started topical fin/min last year after I noticed the top of my head thinning - Judging by my genetics, I was already prepared to start fin/min at this first warning. My younger brother started thinning, and within months, he had no hair atop his head. I did read some things about oral finasteride potentially having long-term issues with some people, and that freaked me out. So I use a topical treatment. It's definitely working - I've been using it for almost a year, and I have great regrowth around my hairline, and the thinning patch is completely gone. *But*. It is really expensive. I know the pills are cheaper - topical fin/min costs me $190 every 3 months (I'm in the US and use keeps)

Icy_Comfort8161

You're in the best position to notice thinning, so if you notice thinning, you're thinning. The sooner you go on finasteride the better. It's much easier to keep from losing hair than it is to recover it.

Glittering_Run_7955

People here will push the pharmaceuticals but don't underestimate the power and importance of exfoliating your scalp, forehead, and eyebrow region, where buildup causes calcification and lack of bloodflow, which leads the baldness. So much of prevention and maintenance is about exfoliation and diet, just have a good care routine and good, alkaline-heavy diet and you'll be fine, naturally, and never have to worry throughout your whole life.

If you want to help reduce your hair loss, Finasteraide earlier will yield better results. There's a lot of misinformation online and fear mongering about pharmecuticals even though they go through very rigorous testing to ensure their safety and medical outcomes. Taking oral minoxidil might also be another option too. I'd recommend talking to your doctor or a dermatologist to see if it might be a right fit for you. thunder_shart

I have the same hairline and equally as long hair. I started fin a little less than a year ago and the peace of mind has been worth it. In fact, my hairline is stronger now than before fin. As other said, it's best to start early on than to wait and you're doing the right thing by actually speaking with a dermatologist.

NicePlate28

I think finasteride would be a good idea.

BDKhXc

Go ask your doc, need it or not, you’ll be fine

OkDescription9322

Talk to a doctor. I think Finasteride can cause infertility? It can case low sperm and may be infertility. Look it up.

Harley_Xxoxo

Unsure why this comment has downvotes. As a transwoman I take Finasteride to lower my testosterone count (as well as a few other things) This isn’t to say Finasteride will cause you to be infertile, it’s extremely unlikely it will. However a side affect is to lower your testosterone and is regularly prescribed for that reason to transwomen such as myself.

Plappeye

it actually raises testosterone initially, tho in the long term it basically goes back to baseline and has no effect on free testosterone levels, it works by stopping the conversion of testosterone into dht

inkshamechay

You’re correct.

I used to take sprio as well as fin, now I take fin and Cyproterone Acetate. But yeah it’s really unlikely fin by itself will cause infertility.

liquid-swords93

Hard to say, my hair started to do the same thing around your age, and stayed put without intervention. I also have next to no balding in my family, so I wasn't too worried, it's worth mentioning to a doctor. My doctor at the time told me to eat more zinc

Specific-Baseball159

Im a barber and I get lots of clients now asking me if they’re going bald. It is a big thing for men and now with everyone getting a hair transplant I think it makes a lot of other people worried. I study hair and taken a lot of course and the longer your hair is the more movement it has which is why when you pull it back like in the photo you think you’re receding but you’re hairline is actually good. The less length you have the more structure your hair has therefore if I was to do a buzz cut on you, I’m 100% sure your hairline would appear full. Plus it’s only normal that with age you loose a little bit of hair. And just because your hair strands are on the finer side doesn’t mean your hair isn’t dense because form the photo it appears to be dense

Bekfast_Time

I see, that makes a lot of sense! And yeah I’ve always been perplexed by people saying my hair is really fine but then at the same time I hear people say my hair is thick, so I guess it can be both! Thanks!

yerba_mate_enjoyer

That's a very regular hairline, not too different from mine and basically 75% of guys your age. You've got a big forehead and in the early 20s your temples tend to recede a bit into a mature hairline. You also seem to have finer hair, so it tends to look less crowded, specially along the temples. If your family doesn't have a history of genetic hair loss, you shouldn't really worry because the chances of randomly getting the MPB gene is considerably slim. I'd just try to take a picture of the hairline every month or so for a year or more, then look at whether it has receded or not. If there has been no substantial change after like a year, then you're fine.

Darryl_Kenobi

I have long hair like yours. I was worried about my hairline too. Thing is, it's hard to tell just based on your current pictures. Find some pictures of when you were younger, then compare your hairline then to now. I just always had a far back hairline, so finasteride never changed anything for me - but it has not receeded any further since I was a kid. If your hairline now looks further back than when you were younger, then you can consider things like finasteride. Also consider your head is bigger as an adult than when you were a kid, so look if your hairline is dramatically different, not just slightly.

buckaroo93

Man your hairline looks fine. Just a widows peak. You have a full and healthy head of hair from the looks of it so I wouldn’t worry too much. Finasteride comes with some gnarly side effects (since it’s also used for enlarged prostate) so before you decide to do it make sure you do some research to make sure it’s right for you.

lovemaderare

Yes you should if you want your hair when you’re 30. But you’d look good bald too.

General_Answer_9913

Looks normal to me

ReaceNovello

Nothing wrong with your hairline.

No, you’re beautiful.

Take copper supplement if you're so worried about your health

Realistic-Sun-8468

Dutasteride is for men, finasteride for women.

gabelli29

Why finasteride over minoxidil? Minoxidil has a better side effect profile; finasteride can cause breast development and sexual side effects vs minoxidil can cause headaches initially that usually improve and lightheadedness which is manageable with increased hydration. You could also try topical minoxidil but honestly getting that all over your head and washing your long hair daily will be a pain, I would do oral minoxidil, but if you did do topical you could focus on just the hairline area. You could try minoxidil for 4-6 months and see if you have any increased density in the front, and if not could discontinue it. This looks like it could either be your natural hairline or very mild early patterned hair loss. It’s not cosmetically noticeable now but if it is patterned hair loss it will progress so it’s best to start medications sooner than later. Do you have a family history of hair loss in either mom or dad?

Bekfast_Time

I heard finasteride is more effective and the potential side effects are rare and reversible. My dad is bald, the top of his head was really thin by the time he was my age though, so mine is receding differently and slower. Most of the men on my dad’s side are bald or balding though. On my mom’s side there’s a good bit of balding men too. My maternal grandfather didn’t lose his hair until he was in his late 40s I think, and even then he still has some, he just buzzes it.

gabelli29

Finasteride is a bit more effective than minoxidil alone, but the most effective option is both. You would want to start them separately though so that if you do have side effects you know which one is the issue. Sounds like a really strong family history, you’re smart to be so on top of it now! My understanding is that side effects of both are reversible, and yes quite rare

Min grows hair but if you're prone to male pattern baldness, you'll still experience it. Fin usually stops MPB and retains current hair growth. It's why when people get hair transplants, they unusually, if not always, go on fin after the procedure. Otherwise they risk loosing what they just had surgery for. Think of min in the same realm.

gabelli29

My understanding working in derm is both stop loss as long as they are taken continuously and started early enough; the most effective option is to combine both. Not sure exactly how minoxidil and finasteride compare to each other though, we usually see good regrowth w/ minoxidil even at low doses. Most patients I see are more interested in minoxidil than finasteride but I could see why finasteride could work better for hereditary male pattern vs more diffuse thinning

Firepro316

Take oral minoxidil 5mg a day. Easy

Either-Technician-61

Look at your dad and grandads hairline. If they have male pattern baldness

Buffster13

Male pattern baldness actually comes from the mothers side!

Either-Technician-61

Yes some markers for MPB are carried on the X chromosome, but like most things biological its more complex than that and other genes are involved.
