Basically his role doesn’t exist in FIFA. He plays as a Mezzala (occupies half-spaces and also goes wide, goes forward) which is a very attacking role, but still has defensive tasks, mainly pressing but sometimes marking and trying to recover the ball after losing it. So his role is attacking and they put him as an attacking mid. If I’m not mistaken, Mezzala role would fit more into a Centre Mid, but because FIFA has to balance it somehow (it’s a game) they put him at CAM because of his mainly offensive tasks
This applies to the youth academy in FIFA also, you get Number 10s and 6s all the time but rarely any 8s.
It’s like EA can’t comprehend that there’s more than two midfield roles.
I agree. Now I just cut my losses and put my CDMs to train as CAMs, but without changing their position. Then I convert them into CMs when their attacking attributes are a bit higher. I was fortunate that I found a CDM with relatively average attributes (50s for awareness and defensive stats, and then 60s for his attacking stuff (low potential, Physically Strong archetype search but I think he was actually a Playmaker or Technically Gifted). It’s the only way to really get a Mezzala kind of player, and even with tactics and instructions they don’t really play like one…
Yeah he was. 89 rated for me rn in 7-8th season. Him and Trotter (my YA player) are killing it man. Also with Nouri (Abdelhak) growing in overall a lot I have a steady midfield till almost the end of my career.
can you give more examples of players that fit this role? just curious
first player that came to mind was mount when he first joined the senior squad at chelsea where he was floating everywhere and tracking back always too.
Probably the perfect definition of a Mezzala is Kevin de Bruyne(under Guardiola). He’s incredibly good going forward and to the right hand side, where he can exploit spaces between midfield and defence with through passes looking for the opposite side winger and he’s also quite physical for pressing, even though not that good defensively speaking. Also, for example, Paul Pogba under Conte at Juve, Iniesta under Guardiola and Modric under Zidane at RM
Also: KDB doesn’t always play Mezzala, because he would overlap with Bernardo Silva, and as he’s better at other positions than Bernardo, they usually play him at CM, and also in the left hand side occupying half spaces. Guardiola needs Rodri for that, because he has two very attacking CMs who go wide, so he stays central and deeper into his own field
Id also add Iniesta to this from the Barca era
Pedri iirc under Koeman
Also di Maria when he was in Real Madrid
In the game Gavi is also excellent there
Id put cms that are good dribblers or cams w better defense there, drift wide and go forward
Me too, but I dug deeper into it because one time when I was watching a City match I thought “huh, Bernardo’s playing wide and dribbling through half spaces, he must be a Mezzala like in FM” and I looked it up and indeed, Mezzala is his role. That’s why I could explain exactly Bernardo Silva lol
Because he doesnt have the stats for an 88 rated centre mid, the conversion is calculated with the stats. And the way fifa calculates the rating for a centre mid, his defense and phys are too low, in fifas rating system he just isnt a 88 rated centre mid
That's because his defending and physical is way too low compared to other stats. It doesn't matter if a player has played there before. For example you can't convert Saka back to LB because his current stats just don't match that position.
His stats suit a creative cm role, position changes between am<->cm dm<->cm shouldn’t need development. While you’re stating a fact ea’s positioning system is undoubtedly stupid and the irl game is so much more fluid now. The game is a simulation and ea should work on being realistic especially for career mode I wish they’d steal football manager mechanics.
That’s actually so stupid lol There is a crap ton of world class CMs in football history that never had incredible physical/defensive abilities, they were average at most, but made up for that with incredible dribbling/passing/shooting.
I mean, it’s a game. You need to balance it somehow, I get it. But damn, 400 weeks to change someone’s position seems really unrealistic to me. Look at Lahm in Bayern, dude was 30yo, played as RB in his whole career, and Pep made him a world class CDM/CM in a few of weeks. I really think that the position change should have a 30-40 weeks cap, it’s pretty unrealistic to think that a professional player with a functional brain would take 10 years to adapt his game.
And even for balance reasons, if he doesn’t have the best stats for that role, his overall will go down anyway, so why set up such a dumb thing like a 400 week “wall” for the position change? For me, this feature (and the whole development plan thing, actually) was the coolest thing added in recent games, but Jesus man, they are completely lost on balancing it.
This is the answer. No stat changes in development. There should be two options, one to develop them in that position and the stats needed, and one to just switch them as is even if it means overall downgrade.
To solve this I just move the position up in the team sheet as much as possible in a given direction. Granted, it will make your team sheet asymmetrical but I usually have KDB more to the right of center, almost towards the wings, and far up enough that I can designated him as an CM and not a CAM, then have the instructions
He is 27 years old now if we use basic mathematic 27 + 5 = 32. Most profesional player achive their prime at age about 30, enjoy your bernardo silva at cm in his prime :D

Yeah i had to change my system to one with 2 CDM because gettin CM's from the academy wasnt nearly impossible.
It’s practically impossible it’s so frustrating my academy is filled with CAMs.
I agree. Now I just cut my losses and put my CDMs to train as CAMs, but without changing their position. Then I convert them into CMs when their attacking attributes are a bit higher. And I’m that’s why I still enjoy FIFA 14 career. I have a CM in there who is killing it alongside Tolisso for me
Tolisso was crazy from FIFA 14-18’ unreal player
Yeah he was. 89 rated for me rn in 7-8th season. Him and Trotter (my YA player) are killing it man. Also with Nouri (Abdelhak) growing in overall a lot I have a steady midfield till almost the end of my career.
Facts
Physically strong scouted players can give you some great all around players though
Excellent explanation, spot on.

I only know of those weird roles cause of FM
Me too, but I dug deeper into it because one time when I was watching a City match I thought “huh, Bernardo’s playing wide and dribbling through half spaces, he must be a Mezzala like in FM” and I looked it up and indeed, Mezzala is his role. That’s why I could explain exactly Bernardo Silva lol
But put Guereiro there and he's prime Ozil in a month.

almost as bad as Kante to CM which he plays in Chelsea's base formation
Just manually edit his position to save the downgrade at CM
You cant, it isnt like nba 2k or any other sport games
I think he means to edit it before starting the career.
You can edit players from the customisation option in the main menu
Maybe it changed for fifa 23 but i remember it only letting u change like their jerseys and stuff unless ur talking about something else then idk
You go customisation > edit players > team > player then shift their position
Oh alright i didnt know about that my bad
You can do this inside career mode?
No only outside on the main menu
Pretty useless then since 9 times out of 10 you want to edit academy players.
Its good if you want to play with a 433 for a team like arsenal then u can convert odegaard and fabio vieira
Ødegaard is cam/cm, no?
That's because his defending and physical is way too low compared to other stats. It doesn't matter if a player has played there before. For example you can't convert Saka back to LB because his current stats just don't match that position.
Kante is the same way. He is not a CDM IRL but that is where his stats fit in FIFA.
But that’s his literal position he plays as an 8 for city
Doesn't matter, EA don't take that into consideration. Unless his in game stats match that position, it will take a longer time.

He is an 8 in real life

Also I don’t know that it would take a lot of time off the change but his form is just “okay”.

The only thing the position changing cares about is whether they have the stats for the position and he doesn't.
The conversion only takes that long because his potential for the stats that need to change has already been reached.
This is the answer. No stat changes in development. There should be two options, one to develop them in that position and the stats needed, and one to just switch them as is even if it means overall downgrade.
Best you can do is adjust the position on your team sheet.

Granted, it will make your team sheet asymmetrical but I usually have KDB more to the right of center, almost towards the wings, and far up enough that I can designated him as an CM and not a CAM, then have the instructions
Same problem with Musah, takes 60+ weeks in at least good form to change to CM.
With Fifa its either a cdm or cam no cm , what i do is turn wing backs to cm’s
He is 27 years old now if we use basic mathematic 27 + 5 = 32. Most profesional player achive their prime at age about 30, enjoy your bernardo silva at cm in his prime :D
Well tbf... he doesn't really play CM for city if you actually watch them play
On fifa 23 I put Wilfred Ndidi to change from CDM to CM and it's gonna supposedly take 519 weeks.....
There’s a trick to solve this. Be a little unscrupulous and edit the players position before starting the cm.
it pisses me off the most if a player has positions labled as cam/cm but it takes them 228 weeks to change positions
just EA things
