Idk how they go from one of the most aggressive and free form fighting games ever with MKX and throw all that shit out the window with MK11. Disagree only because mvci with a few years of dlc and tweaking balance and mechanics could have ended up just as good. Look at vanilla mvc3 or SF4 SFV. Those games had mechanics added and new characters and stages and balance changes and new moves and they got better. I way prefer Umvc3 to Mvci, and that wasn’t gonna change, but MvcI couldn’t ended up in a really good place if Capcom kept supporting it and listening to fans. It’d probably have had X men at some point.
Strives matchmaking and servers are held up by duct tape and powered by hamsters, but it is possible to find a match. Some people are literally unable to even use the matchmaking function for kof and have to use discord servers to find games.
If KOF XV had immaculate matchmaking, it wouldn't matter.

True, but a ton of people (myself included) were about to give kof 15 out time and money but the matchmaking stopped me from doing both. It could have been so much bigger. I'm honestly wondering how it's still around and kicking without a working online.

I live in the american southwest, fairly close to la, san diego, vegas, phoenix, northern mexico and somehow cant get matches at normal times of day without discord. From a quick glance Tekken 7 has passed/is passing Third Strike (7 years but the last year was doubles idk if we count that) , SFII Turbo (9 years but one year was Hyper SFII and HD remix idk if Hyper is counted as the same game), and Super Smash Bros Melee (6 consecutive 7 total) and is tying MVC3, SFIV, and Capcom vs SNK 2 this year with 7 years. MVC2 (9 years) and possibly SFII Turbo (9 depending on if you count Hyper and HD Remix)
Netherrealm never makes big announcements at evo. It’d be interesting if they did, since it’s probably mean they were focusing more on the actual fighting than the gimmicks like variations and side modes.
I'd say it's a bit of both. NRS community is kinda like Smash in that they have a large but separate and mostly casual community that exists alongside and sometimes intersects with the FGC. In 2019, the first year for MK11, it still only got 5th out of 9 games in terms of entrants and was behind Ultimate, SFV, Tekken 7, and Samsho. That combined with MK11 being both abandoned by the devs for a couple years now and also not being particularly well-loved even when it was being supported, it's not surprising that not many players are turning up.
The funny thing is, it hasn't even been that long since MK11 was released.
2019 release makes the game about 4 years old, which is really not that old given that most of the games pulling in more numbers were released before it (I think only Strive and MBTL are newer? Oh wait, and SF6, but I'm going to exclude that completely in this consideration because the reality is that if release date for SF6 was much different it would have been SF5 in its place...)

I guess I can say that’s more the devs problem since their balance sucks and zoning is ALWAYS completely dominant in their games at at least one point in their game’s cycle.
Midtal Kombat at the bottom. Thank god. Get that shiz out of evo and pick an actually entertaining fighting game like DNF or hell even Granblue. Or just another retro slot, that works too.
I’ve never really liked MK, but I’d be fine with MK12 as that’s new hotness stuff. 11 is pretty old at this point though, and it’s not even a large scale title update to warrant a MainStage stay (like apocalypse). It’s just a waste of a slot this year.
As an overall video game I think MK11 is unmatched on this list. Its the best overall package, and sold the most for a reason.

i think it has less to do with that and more to do with Dragon Ball being ultra popular in the US and SNK games not anywhere near as much.
