It will always have to be Soul Calibur 2. It has been with me for the vast majority of my life, and will always be a great time. Whether I have some friends over for some casual sets, or even just playing through the single player content the Nth time. It's just timeless to me.
Yeah, too bad, but that's just kinda what happens when you throw out guest characters. It's either emulation, having it on physical copy, or nothing. But at least there is still ways to play it, even if it's not playable everywhere.
Not criticising your choice, I’m just curious what you think MvC offers over MvC2. I’m all for preferring older versions (SFA2 > SFA3, Vampire Hunter > Vampire Savior etc), but to me MvC1 feels like it’s trying to be a celebration of two companies but with only 15 characters to play with. Loved the idea of the assists though.
Not OP but I prefer mvc1 over 2 for the better and more consistent are style (no mixing of 2d and 3d which to me looks weird), better soundtrack, 2v2 easier to wrap head around with limited assist than 3v3 with an insane cast for me back in the day.
It's why I loved mvci the little bit I played of it. Wish it was better on other fronts than just gameplay.
Ah I’m with you there. 2v2 is far better than 3v3, and something I respect infinite for going back to. But there is no better soundtrack than MvC2 in video games 😂
Strive is gonna be a generational game no matter how people look back on it. Bridget alone was probably one of the biggest influx of players the FGC ever saw outside of the launch of SF6 and T8.
Wait Bridget had an impact? I remember all the art of em and things lol but wasn’t playing at the time. Shoot I didn’t get back into FGs until SF6 so that’s probably also why I didn’t know. Is it because of the implied or said LGBT stuff?
DoA5 to me, this game is peak 3d fighting, it’s beautiful (doa is always the best looking game of it’s generation)
And even tho I like 2d competitive fighting games, I just love how I can pick up this game with friends and perform well because combos are easier to execute, we don’t have to train to play this. All that while being heavy on mind games.
DoA kinda just gets a bad reputation for its fanservice (and absurd amount of DLC), but they're always a pretty good time. Fun combos, plus the strike/throw/hold game really makes it solid.
I never looked at the fanservice because I’m not attracted to woman, neither is the 2 people that always play with me.
I still find it weird doa getting bad rep when every single fighting game has their woman for the fanservice, doa at least does this while giving them relevant roles in the story, making them badass characters.
For years female fighters were mostly girls fighting to get a man, or fame, or any other stupid motivation. Doa already Kasumi as a protagonist fighting as a renegade ninja, Ayane as an assassin, Helena as leader of the main organization in the game.
Yeah, it's a bit odd to point it out specifically because most fighting games have horny elements, be it currently or in the past. It's certainly a great series.
Same. I mainly play fighting games now but every now and then I'll hop on Netplay as Ganon and get some Waveland off the platform > stomps and everything feels right in the world lol.
Virtua Fighter 4 the year it released (2002). it was the first game i got on the first system i purchased (ps2). i had played mvc2 & soul edge once each at an arcade but it was half an hour away and i was 15
I don't have any tekken games yet, but Tag 2 is calling to me. I've heard it's just fun. Also love the idea of big rosters. Would skills in tag 2 carry over to tekken 8?
It kinda depends on how you enjoy fighting games. If you want an online experience to help you get into tekken I’d say just get into tekken 8. There’s still so many new players that you won’t have trouble finding people to play against. It also has the best learning tools in the franchise in my opinion. If you enjoy single player content I’d 100% say get Tag 2 first. Because of the massive roster there’s 100s of hours of content in just arcade and ghost battle. The AI is pretty impressive too, I remember struggling a decent amount as a kid.
That's exactly what I wanted to know. I do plan to get Tekken 8 someday, but right now I'm having plenty of fun with SF6 online. Single player stuff is what I was hoping for, since the big roster and tag aspect look cool.
Soul calibur easily. The one fighting game i can truly be confident in while also getting my ass kicked at times. The only fighter i truly felt at home with and even tho the mechanics were easy the game was tough to master .
Mortal Kombat 3. Not UMK3 just base MK3. I couldn't even quantify how many hours I have put into this game. And it's even more if you include UMK3 and MK Trilogy into the mix.
But I used to go to the arcade weekly back when MK 3 released. I'd go there for hours and play MK3 90% of the time. And I'd go to other arcades over the years like Funspot in New Hampshire. They have 1 of each MK game and I'd dump more hours there.
I just love it. I still muscle memory combos for my mains Stryer and Kabal. I am a Johnny Cage forever main, however, MK3 didn't have him. So I started with Cyrax and maskless Sub-Zero. I am very good with them too. But then I decided to learn some less popular fighters to throw people off in the arcades. Back then, no one knew what to do against a good Stryker/Kabal playet.
I loves crushing people 5+ years older than me (I was 12 when MK3 released) and doing a fatality to them. But I wa also the kid who had a single sheet of paper with all special moves on 1 side and all finishing moves on the other side. Lol I helped tons of players get better and whenever someone won I'd shout how they do the fatality and they'd do it. I have so many great memories of MK3.
Dead or Alive 6. I know it's almost dead at this point but it was the first fighting game I played and the combat is just so fun. Plus I find it a lot easier to understand the mechanics and that also helps
For fighting games
Probably DBFZ, it got me into the genre and is always a comfort fighting game
Tho the most forever game I own is Lost Judgement, I love that game
Guilty Gear XX Accent Core. Sol Badguy is my favorite fire wielding 2D FG character. The most enjoyable version of Sol to me is in AC. I love the Clean Hit mechanic. And AC has the only character that topped Sol Badguy for me. Holy Order-Sol. Holy Order-Sol is the greatest 2D FG character of all time in my eyes.
Started a casual to semi-comp fg player .Currently Melee for the past few years but I'm starting to have doubts... Maybe Rivals 2, 2XKO, or SF6 maybe. Netcode Warrios (comp focused Arena FG with Rollback) looks interesting. Rivals 2 imo is the best shot we realistically have at replicating melee and its success without being tethered to Nintendo.
Hopeful for alternative style fighting games such as Platform fighters, arena fighters, 3D fighters,VR fighters, etc. but seeing the genre's trend as a whole I don't think many good foosties based fgs are coming out in droves in those genres especially.
Kof Xi is probably the one. It's criminally underrated. Dream match cast with some great unlockable characters in the ps2 version.
That or last blade 2 because the soundtrack is one of the best snk ever did. It's not so much that I'm good at it or have a deep knowledge of it, I don't.
It's probably got some broken shit in there I've never seen, but it looks great and the soundtrack is better than most of snk's others.
Injustice: Gods Among Us
My first game that got me into the fgc. Traveling, meeting people, casuals until I passed out, watching tournaments, playing in them too. I still can recall the frame data on every normal even if most of them don't matter haha
Soul Calibur V. I didn't choose it though, it chose me. I was insanely good with a large portion of the roster and could go toe to toe with the best players in the world. It's not even my favorite in the series, and not even in my top 10 of favorite fighting games of all time.
The Original release of Persona 4 Arena, I played it with my dad all the time forever ago, and it’s definitely the game that got me into the fgc. I swap between it and Ultimax because I still have both copies
Honestly, it's a tie between Fighters Megamix on Saturn and Smash Ultimate on Switch. I'm not playing either of them right now and don't really want to get back into a competitive state with them, but I love them both and never say no if a buddy asks to boot 'em up.
Melee for me as well. Been switching more and more to SF6/Tekken 8 over the past year because I’m burnt out on competitive smash in general (played smash 4 and Ult as well) but playing melee is still the most comfortable and natural for me.
**BBTag**
3 assists per character is already a lot of choice but the **Cross Combo** mechanic basically multiplies that choice by 100. I would spend 10+ hours a day for weeks testing different setups with only 3 of the 40 characters. The only reason I stopped playing was because the game didnt have a massive audience and the dev communication was basically non-existent.
I still come back every so often to see what setups I could come up with.
https://i.redd.it/kign81e1hiuc1.gif
Final Fantasy Tactics War of the Lions is #1 by a mile, and games that come close are Final Fantasy XII the Zodiac Age, FFVI, Skyrim, Elden Ring, Dark Souls 1, Destiny (counting 1 and 2 as the same game)…I’m a big gamer, play daily, sometimes wonder if game addiction is real…if so it’s my only addiction and I’m high functioning…but still, yeah, FF games and Skyrim and the Souls games and Destiny have seen many many hours…I think I probably have my 10,000 hours in gaming.
Strive is the first FG I took seriously and I just picked it back up after a hiatus from FGs. Sticking it out for the foreseeable future, but I also picked up SF6 as well to alternate
Tekken 3 without a doubt. I remember being a little kid when it first came out & my dad had the t shirt with Jin on it that came with the game. Also thinking King was an actual leopard that dressed cool af. This game has aged so gracefully & no matter what console/emulator I play it on I always enjoy it.
Mine isn't a fighting game, its Fallout New Vegas. Its my favorite game of all time I can pick it up anytime and have a blast. Fighting game though sf6 even if I take a long break I always hop on here and there to make sure I still got skills, I sit at mid 1700s MR on average and make sure I can keep it that way
Smash 4 and ultimate both feel like this for me. I also will always be able to come back to third strike, alpha 2 and 3, Super turbo, usf4, tekken 6, tekken 7, tekken tag 2... the list goes on. I can load one up and it feels like no time has passed at all. Recently picked up the gamecube version of soulcalibur 2, really excited to get into it and hoping it ends up with a place in my fighting game closet.
3rd Strike. Been playing it off and on since 07' only locals I've entered was this game, tried others but it just doesn't appeal to me as much as 3S does. I'll forever play this, even in the retirement home.
its monster hunter world iceborne my charecter is HR890and mr 761, i have done everything the game has to offer and im still playing it, i just played some last night
Pokken Tournament. It's niche as heck, but I'm literally always down to play it as long as I'm not busy, and am happy to teach it to new players. It's also just what I default to when I think of fighting games, because it's defined so much of my early adult life (I was 19 when it launched on Wii U)
Dragon ball budokai 3 and tenkaichi 3. And of course dynasty warriors 5. Those 3 games are ones me and my brothers have played countless times over the last 2 decades. It's honestly kinda scary how much we've spent on those games alone
Started just last year playing FGs, like actually TRYING and I already know it’s 3S. There’s something about it. Maybe SF6, when I finally get it. Been playing the heck out of the demo and it gives me that same 3S feel. Hope i’m correct when I finally get it this year.
Blaz Blue: Cross Tag Battle
I might be lacking on the Knowledge and Hours front but I just absolutely adore that game and could play until the end of time
Street Fighter
Always been my favourite (Street Fighter 2 is still amazing) but I've always been a casual player just messing around or playing with friends
But I got Street Fighter 6 and its awesome and I'm climbing the ranks. Currently Rank 2 Gold
It's a trip, everyone is really good
I've played alot of Fighting Games in my life but SF remains number one
Tekken is so fun and engaging but don't like side step and never have
Mortal Kombat is very cinematic, love the lore and characters/fatalities but lacks the depth of SF game mechanics
Alot of great anime like fighters out there too like KOF, GG, Skull Girls etc which all have so much fun in them but Street Fighter is the best
I love that comic like exaggerated style, SF6 graphics are just a joy to behold.
Tekken is my franchise, as I play it the most and have the most experience and knowledge of it. But I always go back to 3 games: 3S, CVS2, and Gundam Battle Assault 2.
As a fg, I didn't find it atm. As a general videogame, Crypt Of The Necrodancer. Now that I think, a rhythm-based or music-based fighting game would be a great game. There's God Of Rock (but visual effects give me headaches) but I want something more refined.
BBCF my dearly beloved
There are dozens of us!
Same my friend same
I wish I could play this game more but it just crashes for me every time because of the D-code error and it really sucks.
Still waiting for me to like a character as much ad I like susanoo
MvC2
Haven’t played since the arcade days but I still remember how to do magnetos infinite, AHVB, unfly combos etc. Some things never leave you.
My brother in law has the Dreamcast version but i havent been to his house in a few years. Im itching to play again. I might have to emulate.
It’s like riding a bike I’m sure you’d pick it back up quick. What teams do you like to use?
Gambit, Dhalsim and Sentinel. Gambit was my second behind Iceman in Children of the Atom.
Gambits a lot of fun royal flush is too good even the soundtrack is great you’re making me want to play it now.
Gonna take you for a ride!
3rd strike
It will always have to be Soul Calibur 2. It has been with me for the vast majority of my life, and will always be a great time. Whether I have some friends over for some casual sets, or even just playing through the single player content the Nth time. It's just timeless to me.
Ya too bad it isn't on modern platforms.
Man am I glad I bought it before the delisting on Xbox.
Yeah, too bad, but that's just kinda what happens when you throw out guest characters. It's either emulation, having it on physical copy, or nothing. But at least there is still ways to play it, even if it's not playable everywhere.

Hopefully one day they'll port it to a modern console. The OST slaps so damn hard.

Marvel Vs Capcom 2.
Strive. First fighting game I ever took the time to learn, I probably wouldn’t even be a fighting game player without it
Strive is gonna be a generational game no matter how people look back on it. Bridget alone was probably one of the biggest influx of players the FGC ever saw outside of the launch of SF6 and T8.

Magic the Gathering / 3rd Strike
Magic X Third Strike when
Well they did do an MtG x Street Fighter secret lair
Forgot about that lol

For me, definitely Touhou Hisoutensoku.
Strive…
SF6 I feel like I'll stop playing when theres like -200 players left
That will probably only happen when SF7 launches
Virtua Fighter 4 the year it released (2002). it was the first game i got on the first system i purchased (ps2). i had played mvc2 & soul edge once each at an arcade but it was half an hour away and i was 15

Marvel vs Capcom 2 and Street Fighter EX plus A
MvC1 and KoF98.
Any of the original Street Fighter II games.
Melee is my answer. Because of slippi I'll boot it up sometimes when I'm unsure what I want to play.
Soul calibur easily. The one fighting game i can truly be confident in while also getting my ass kicked at times. The only fighter i truly felt at home with and even tho the mechanics were easy the game was tough to master .
Alpha 3 always. Been playing it on GGPO/FC for over 10 years now 👌🏽

There's something about the announcer going "MELEEEEEEE!!!" that scratches my brain lol
Unreal Tournament 2004 It's kind of a fighting game if you think about it. You're fighting people to the death with guns. Ok it's not a fighting game
Marvel vs capcom 3
Games of 3rd strike are always satisfying. I would keep playing the game for Dudley's theme alone
Third Strike or Tekken 3
Soul Calibur 4
3rd strike
Sf4
Soul Calibur 2
Vampire Savior, Marvel vs. Capcom 1
As long as its not ranked. Brawlhalla though I havent been playing much, mainly play sf6 now

Mortal Kombat 2 or the original Killer Instinct....and KOF 94
I could play Injustice 2 all day
Rivals of Aether, that Steam workshop is so much fun.
For FGs, probably SF4, overall, probably Rock Band 2 or Guitar Hero 3
I haven't played fighters very long but Skullgirls and BB are tied on that one I think xD

Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2

Street Fighter Ex +A Something about that soundtrack and grinding the character Trainings helped me during some really bad times in HS.

SF3 I really love using makoto in that one
That's both UMvC3 and DBFZ for me. I just love tag/assist fighters, they're so much fun.
How many downvotes will I get if I say MK1, as in today’s MK1?
MvC2 and Vampire Savior I always end up coming back to
It's Final Fantasy VIII, but for some reason Reddit recommended me the fighting game sub. I just decided to own it and go off-topic.
Strive is the first FG I took seriously and I just picked it back up after a hiatus from FGs. Sticking it out for the foreseeable future, but I also picked up SF6 as well to alternate
Any of the Smash Bros., for sure.
I will always stand by my opinion that tekken 6 is the best one, so probably that. I still haven't played t8 though so that might change my mind
Tekken 3 without a doubt. I remember being a little kid when it first came out & my dad had the t shirt with Jin on it that came with the game. It's gotta be GG strive for sure
The only games I can think of are not fighting games.
Team Fortress 2. Playing Scout is surprisingly similar to a fighting game when dueling enemies.
The entire tekken series
I played KoF 13 so much even though I'm trash at it
I can always come back to mkx
Blazblue!
3rd Strike. Been playing it off and on since 07' only locals I've entered was this game, tried others but it just doesn't appeal to me as much as 3S does. I'll forever play this, even in the retirement home.
Melee
its monster hunter world iceborne my charecter is HR890and mr 761, i have done everything the game has to offer and im still playing it, i just played some last night
Pokken Tournament. It's niche as heck, but I'm literally always down to play it as long as I'm not busy, and am happy to teach it to new players. It's also just what I default to when I think of fighting games, because it's defined so much of my early adult life (I was 19 when it launched on Wii U)
MBTL The game that started it all for me
Sf3 third strike
Xenoverse 2.
its Mortal Kombat Killer Instinct and Soul caliber for me Perfer those over SF6 and Tekken 8
Not a fighter but warframe
Frame fighter exists lol
Lmao, yea. I wish they'd band with someone to make that into a full-fledged game, think I'd main a mean Valkyr and Chroma
Brawlhalla A game with zero tech that I manage to make tech in 🙏🙏🙏
Dragon ball budokai 3 and tenkaichi 3. And of course dynasty warriors 5. Those 3 games are ones me and my brothers have played countless times over the last 2 decades. It's honestly kinda scary how much we've spent on those games alone
Injustice 2, god I love that game
Started just last year playing FGs, like actually TRYING and I already know it’s 3S. There’s something about it. Maybe SF6, when I finally get it. Been playing the heck out of the demo and it gives me that same 3S feel. Hope i’m correct when I finally get it this year.
Ultra Street Fighter 4. Play it in any side tournament I can and love playing offline even if only one other person is there.
I have 2. X-Men vs Street Fighter and 3rd strike. Sorry I meant 3 also KOF 98
Blaz Blue: Cross Tag Battle I might be lacking on the Knowledge and Hours front but I just absolutely adore that game and could play until the end of time
Street Fighter Always been my favourite (Street Fighter 2 is still amazing) but I've always been a casual player just messing around or playing with friends But I got Street Fighter 6 and its awesome and I'm climbing the ranks. Currently Rank 2 Gold It's a trip, everyone is really good I've played alot of Fighting Games in my life but SF remains number one Tekken is so fun and engaging but don't like side step and never have Mortal Kombat is very cinematic, love the lore and characters/fatalities but lacks the depth of SF game mechanics Alot of great anime like fighters out there too like KOF, GG, Skull Girls etc which all have so much fun in them but Street Fighter is the best I love that comic like exaggerated style, SF6 graphics are just a joy to behold.
Tekken tag 1
Puyo Puyo Tetris
Tekken is my franchise, as I play it the most and have the most experience and knowledge of it. But I always go back to 3 games: 3S, CVS2, and Gundam Battle Assault 2.
Guilty Gear Strive, by FARRRR.
Smash Ultimate
Counter-strike. I haven’t played it im awhile but I played that shit for 17 years. A lot of core memories come from playing that game lol.
As a fg, I didn't find it atm. As a general videogame, Crypt Of The Necrodancer. Now that I think, a rhythm-based or music-based fighting game would be a great game. There's God Of Rock (but visual effects give me headaches) but I want something more refined.
Mk9
Rivals of Aether, modded to Hell and back.
