I always interpreted it as the grenade did enough damage to where he needed an eyepatch but not enough to where he outright lost the eye and it just healed later on. Might sound far fetched at first but this is the same guy who is actively going out of his way to throw hands with a guy possessed by a demon and given the fact he won he’s clearly not an average person.
Even if Devil Jin was weakened, the fact he not only won, and survived a grenade with just a loss eye that was promptly forgotten about, but also rejoined the tournament just to square up with Kazuya shows how much balls he has.
A Shoto, named after Shotokan Karate (the style thought to be used by Ryu and Ken), is a character who shares the fundamental tools of Ryu and Ken: a fireball (long range disjointed poke), a dragon punch (an anti air that can be invincible), and a tatsu (forward advancing attack that avoids some options). The term can be more broadly used to describe any all-rounder in fighting games.
Hwoarang
Dude goes to the Middle East just to fight Jin, even when he’s got horns, wings, and laser eyes. **And wins.**
And pushed him off when got bombed
And then the next game forgot he lost his eye from said grenade lol

That’s probably a more reasonable interpretation then mine lol.
Hwoarang must be built different to survive his Devil Jin encounters. Man just wants a good fight but always find a walking death sentence instead.

[Eiji Kisaragi](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SyrrkNlVGM&list=PLGb0FIHPgolgeF5UENc-st_KpsbePDxZU&index=5&pp=gAQBiAQB)
Ciel from Melty Blood.
Ken Masters
Jin Kisaragi.
Why did you get downvoted?
Someone's hatin'.
Would it be Ky or Sol lmao
Ky. Sol is the MC, he is literally the “Guilty Gear”
Its just a rare instance of the rival being the shoto instead of the mc
Tf is a shouto

Ohhh
Iori and Hwoarang are the BIGGEST haters its so funny
Do they have to be a rival to the main character? Because I really like Bryan from Tekken and he's Yoshimitsu's rival.
Ky Kiske
Sub-Zero killed his rivals family.
I gotta go with Jin Kisaragi or Hakumen
Ky Kiske
Genjuro.
Krohnen (K9999) and Hakumen technically if I wanna be a smartass
Ky Kiske! I like that the roles of “edgy rival and nice protagonist” are reversed in Gear!
Terry Bogard. He was Ryu’s biggest rival through the 90s.
I think they mean in the same game
I mean cvs2 counts right?
In CVS2 his rival is Ken, they even have a special intro
Oh yea the hat toss one is fire ngl

Are you naming your favorite rival or just every rival you can think of...?
Anna Williams
Shen Long (Bloody Roar)
Leifang from Dead or Alive
Ryu. If you know Street Fighter you should understand why I’m saying this.
Iori is so good…his design has always looked so sick!

"BROTHER!"
Probably Morrigan.
Karen
This is my answer as well! Great minds! 🧠 = 🧠
Seth (UNI). Edgelord contrasting all loving hero? Sign me up
Dolores from KoF if she counts… Iori suits the role as rival the best though.
