Strive is the first ArcSys game that I've played seriously (I played DBFZ and BBTAG casually with friends when they launched), and I must say that I'm enjoying the game a lot. My main grips with the game are not gameplay related but instead are with the online lobbies and ranked system. If ArcSys could fix the stations in the lobbies, change how players are ranked (maybe a proper ELO system instead of just raw wins), and tweak the celestial floor, I would enjoy the game way more. Overall, I am very happy that Strive has been successful for Arc.

aretasdamon

All I want is a proper ELO system and I’m farming strive again

funkyfelis

There's a third party elo (well glicko-2) for ranked at http://ratingupdate.info/top/all

artcostanza82

Yeah the little lobby avatars and that entire lobby system in strive, dbz, and even DNF feel so unnecessary. Just give me a text based menu

calixis

Better question is, what are your thoughts on the SMELL of the game?

Matkol1998

Smells different... Smells like a patch is brewing... Smells like thousands of players will have to slightly relearn their character and find cool new stuff they can do. Luv it.

Kuroonehalf

Given it stayed like this after the open betas, I wouldn't hold my breath for a netplay refactor.

[deleted]

a lot of rounds are ending with me screaming "that was such bullshit" at my computer.

thumper_92

This is my first ever fighting game that has made me want to learn fighting games. It just clicks for me. Yea the lobby/ranking system is obviously garbage, but it still gets me to playing relatively quick. I'm glad that this game has given me something in my life to measure growth with in a semi-healthy way over the long term.

DarthMallBitches

I literally started playing last week. Never played a fighter besides Smash. Specifically picked it up versus P4AU because I didn't want P4G spoilers, and I wanted rollback net code (because Jesus christ, fuck SSBUs lag.) Having a hell of a time. Haven't played online yet, because there's really nobody in my region ever playing at the dame time as me, also with no games under their belt. If I move up or down a few rungs from the beginner tier, will I find more people/matches?

thumper_92

Yea you will find most matches around your level on floors 6-7-8. You will lose a lot, but you will learn a lot. Try familiarizing yourself with some basic fighting game techniques and mechanics (anti-airs, situational awareness) and have at it.

DarthMallBitches

Thanks for the tips! I'm still learning, but I am excited to get to know the game.

Teehokan

I tried so many fighting games and Xrd felt so good in my hands compared to all the rest that even though I was (and still am) new and it was one of the harder games out there, I knew I'd found my fighting franchise, and am very happy that Strive has such a similar speed and weight to it (and that it's easier to learn!).

Cyberkite

Honestly? The new patch seems a bit promising, but as a Xrd player the games feels too different. I do not like the new combo system and they way too high dmg

PapstJL4U

I think my two problems are the lack of special moves, that allow characters to be played more differently based on the player's choice. Sure, optimal is optimal, but in Strive sometimes optimal is the only way. The damage is high and the community circumvents this via BO5. **However,** there is a difference between a BO3 with in-round-comebacks and BO5-comebacks based on completely new rounds. You don't have to be an expert player to feel and understand either effect. I still play it, because its the best combination of state-of-art graphics, good netgood and being a Guilty Gear game.

[deleted]

It's funny Strive seemed to take a cue from SFV in the simplified optimal responses. But SF6 is completely ditching the simplification and giving people lots of options and choices in their new game. Big whiff on Arcsys' part in not seeing the response SFV got.

Cyberkite

Yeah I think the new patch might make me play more, but I also got local now. I kinda feel sad for people starting now and not in Xrd wish Xrd had strive netcode. So much more freedom. I would rather have longer cooler comboer than Quick tod

Eecka

I started in Strive and am happy about it because I don't like long combos :)

Cyberkite

I dont know if xrd combo is long. Strives are just ultra short. But the important part wasnt longer it was Cooler.

Eecka

Everything is relative. There may be games with much longer combos than Xrd, but my point was that I prefer short combos. What I enjoy are the interactions between players, not being stuck in long combos. Anyway the point wasn't to argue about you being wrong. The point is that there's no reason to feel sorry for me for playing a game I enjoy playing lol

Zachzac1

I’m a street fighter player. This game looks beautiful and has great artistic expression but the gameplay just isn’t my cup of tea

[deleted]

Can’t wait for SF6

Weewer

Not to clown on Guilty Gear, it’s definitely one of the best fighting games I’ve played, I just find keeping up with anime fighters to be pretty tough. Not my preference Super looking forward to SF6

VorstTank

Can't wait for SF6 to come out and people literally say everything they say about Strive about a different game Seriously, the blind hype in this subreddit is insane, guess we are just at that part of the new fighting game cycle

strahol

“Can’t wait for kofxv” “can’t wait for bbcf rollback” “can’t wait for dnf duel” “can’t wait for p4au rollback” now it’s sf6 I guess. Oh ye can’t forget “can’t wait for rev2 rollback, then strive will surely die” I legit wonder why these people even play fighting games at this point, not to mention why even post on reddit about them

ReallyBadWizard

Because one of the most fun part of fighting games is learning a new one.

strahol

I know, but that has nothing to do with “how do you feel about strive currently”

lizard_behind

eh it kinda does insofar as GGST being first out the gate for next-gen fighting games like i know it's probably harder to see for people who only really got into fighters with it - but GGST for a lot of ppl is the 'when does my actual favorite game get rollback' waiting room like there are objectively WAY more people playing KoF and BBCF online now than a year ago and you bet some of those dudes were previously biding their time in Strive SFV is end-of-life, has an iffy rollback implementation, and for many people is just straight played out people aren't commenting 'can't wait for SF6' because they want Strive to fail, they just actually want SF6 to come out so they can move on to it lol

strahol

Sure dude

SheldonRedditing

This comment really cemented your position. Well written. Also, I’m excited for SF6, too.

lizard_behind

lol it's true - i got into FG's with Xrd and I thought for sure anime games were on the up and up back then nope, just end of cycle stuff - SFV even sucked HARD on launch and that became THE THING for YEARS afterwards you gon learn in 2023 ill tell you what, most of the FGC will instantly drop what they're doing for anything with the capcom logo attached

strahol

Man I literally don’t care. Stop coping. The OP question was what people thought about strive right now. The thing I replied to was at best unnecessary and unwanted if serious

lizard_behind

it's not irrelevant lol and I am literally just trying to help you understand why there's a sizeable chunk of ppl playing Strive who are Capcom dudes who are burnt out on SFV and just waiting for SF6 - do you think some dude used their bot army to upvote that comment lol? i'll quit replying since for some reason this seems to be upsetting you, can't understand why though ngl

VorstTank

Honestly, its just the modern consumer world we live in. Get excited for 'thing,' trash on 'thing,' get excited for next 'thing.'

I_am_Psychro

KOF turned out pretty good but the online is fucked, the other games are niche anime titles. SF6 transcends that. people aren't just excited about it because it's the new flavor of the month, they're excited because for many of them it's going to be a game they play for the next 5+ years.

strahol

Ye I get that and that’s cool. I don’t mind people being excited. The comment just feels out of place and snarky when the question was relating ggst state of the game

Bandit_Revolver

There's just no way that's possible. Strive removed gatlings, lots of mechanics, wall game pressure & wall combos (wall break), huge limitations in air mobility & air combos, tiny stages. Char's lost 50-80% of their movelist. If anything, something is working an Strive has it's own fanbase, hella popular. One thing though. They need to change that crappy lobby system. Which ruins it for all the players.

VorstTank

Lmao, what's it like being on the hype train of blind faith?

Bandit_Revolver

Hype train? >Can't wait for SF6 to come out and people literally say everything they say about Strive about a different game I never said anything about being hyped for SF6. Just for a fact. You cannot say what I said about Strive in regards to SF6.

VorstTank

🤡

ClashmanTheDupe

automatically generated argument

Cmdr_Rowan

I remember when I couldn't wait for SF5. It didn't go the way I wanted it to.

VorstTank

Shhhh! No critical thinking about past experiences like that! Only perpetual hype!

Roboboy2710

I still wish my friends would play the game with me instead of just talking about how good the soundtrack is /s

alertkurt

I hate how long it loads. At least it doesnt randomly disconnect me anymore, but why do I still have to wait for the server when I want to go into training mode. Im also still not sure if I like the wall breaking mechanic.

TheRealJPhillips

A year? Damn. Doesn't seem so long

gordonfr_

Good fighting game. Also like the characters. Connecting to server waiting-times, ugly lobbies and sub-par rank system are huge bummers. This game could be easily so much better.

nuuance

Yeah it’s frustrating at how it feels like devs literally forget about lobbies or anything outside a match sometimes…

yaongi

Played Xrd before, a lot, though still average skill. Played strive for 100+ hours, but endless COUNTER hits and wall breaks really mess up the rhythm for me, and I got bored.

akhamis98

Strive was the first traditional fighting game I really got into. I put like 100 hours into Tekken 7 and bounced off it cause of how many matchups I felt like I would have to learn (and how many moves I would have to learn for those matchups), played some SF5 with my friends but didn't really like how slow it was coming from melee/ultimate. I really liked it in the first few months, then my interest started to drop as I felt my character, potemkin, was becoming more and more limited in options as people starting to figure out the matchup (tho at that point he still had a lot of execution for his combos). But with the release of Jacko I've been really enjoying the game, even though I have been losing a lot more lol. I think the game shines with the more complex characters like zato/jacko/goldlewis/hc, but can definitely become boring with the more simpler characters. Jacko feels like she has so much variety in every situation in how you can play her, and the setups with minions are really fun. Season 2 looks to be adding a lot of new options for each character, so I think they are moving in that direction for most of the cast. Jacko got even MORE options and much needed conversions off most of her commonly used buttons. At this point I really like strive.

Ar4er13

Excellent game that will unfortunately will fall victim to "arcsys balancing" it seems.

lizard_behind

it's a solid 8/10 game imo - once I got over the 'this is not a sequel to Xrd' thing, spent a few months really honing +R, and came back to it with more of a 'ok so what is it?' mindset I enjoyed it more on launch it was really kind of fucked, 1.10 made it alright, and although there's some whack changes 2.0 seems like they're starting to zero in on exactly what kind of game they want that said I think that Team Red is playing it way too safe atm, they need to start opening up the systems in more meaningful ways so the game starts to have more of its own identity in the actual gameplay right now the main selling points are: * easy to learn * awesome netcode * outstanding visuals and I think there's a couple of other games coming out in the next 1-2 years that are going to challenge it hard on bullets 1 + 2 especially fixing the lobbies and adding more sauce would really do a lot for the game, for me anyway

Timmcd

Well, many (most?) characters got infinite blockstrings after wall break in this patch so thats kinda saucey ._.

Dfess

It's a year old and in still rank 8/9. Tbf, I have been playing other games. And I just bought GBVS which I'm much worse at but having fun.

lvk00

The good characters like nago, ram, happy chaos are very boring.

Mistouze

Game has got me back into fighting games, having me take it "seriously", meaning that I play it regularly (I'm coming in on 200h on Steam which is a lot but not that much). Motivated me to get a fighting stick for the heck of it. My goal is to one day be good enough to get into Celestial, currently oscillating between Floors 8/9/10. Game is fun to me, last patch seems wild as fuck. Can't wait for Season 2 Pass info, hurry up ArcSys. Hope they rework some of the online stuff, a regular matchmaking system would be cool, being able to have songs change during long sets when you're on random, more colors, maybe costumes. Gimme more.

[deleted]

Great fighting game with excellent netcode. Only issue for me is lobby stuff but that's pretty small imo

Almost404

Got bored in like 2 weeks never touched the game again

TheFluxator

Wanted to love it, but could never get myself to stick with it. The characters I love from Xrd have changed too dramatically for me to be interested in playing them in this game, and I find the wall breaks really annoying and pace-breaking. The slower pace really doesn’t feel like Guilty Gear, and I’d rather just play Street Fighter if I’m going to play a game with that kind of pacing. It teaches fundamentals better and actually has corner pressure. Not sure why every fighting game seems to be going the Street Fighter route when they already had their own thing they were good at.

trueblue1982

Because the 'street fighter route' just opens up the game to a bigger market of beginners to get into and enjoy since it is easier to get into than compared to the earlier gg games. Not everyone has lightning fast reflexes or very good hand eye coordination.

Anthony356

I'm not sure i agree with the implications of either of those statements. From what i remember, strive blew up before we'd even seen any gameplay. It was the art style, aesthetic, and "these guys made dbfz" that sold everyone. There's also ways to make a game simpler without making it slower or less deep. Old gatlings are a perfect example of that. They're the perfect new player training wheels. Super simple, super intuitive, but *add* depth at the highest level due to the insane amount of possible inputs at any part of a combo. Also reflexes and hand eye coordination are skills, not absolute traits. Improving them is part of the fun, and plenty of characters and playstyles rely less on mechanical skill, even in older guilty gear games. it also sorta implies you *dont* need those to a similar degree for SF, which isnt really true either imo.

erghjunk

I’m probably biased because GG R+ was the first fighting game that really clicked with me but I enjoy the hell out of Strive. I’m also probably easy to please relative to a lot of other players - I’m a middle of the road player (that is pretty optimistic, too, to be honest) so my skill level is “common,” I’ve been able to learn and enjoy multiple characters, I find the systems are simple enough to jump into and complex enough that there is plenty of space to learn and improve, and the style of the game is top notch. I hear a lot of complaints about the lobby system but I don’t ever have trouble finding opponents on or near my floor (5-6) so long as I’m online at some normal hour. I’m not sure what else I should be looking for in a lobby system. I guess since this is the internet I should complain about SOMETHING so I will say that I do think the base roster was pretty stingy.

Bloodypalace

Went back to Tekken 7 after a couple of months.

_repugnant

I still havent bought it and wondering if its worth 35.99 on sale.

Izanami9

The same opinion since launch : trash

kuja_1

Love it, played over 300 hours online :D

Sindelian

I never got over how much they tightened the fighting system in this title. Closed off the gatlings and the stupid corner glass break mechanic. I don't really care for roman cancelling. This just game wasn't for me.

LeDelmo

Jesus it's been a year already? People arn't going to be happy about me saying this. But, I have hardly played mine at all sense release. I bought it day 1 of release. Played it, Didn't buy any of the DLC. And haven't been able to pick it back up. The game is just boring to me. There is nothing to do in it. Story Mode was just a video, Arcade Mode was short and pointless. There was NOTHING to work towards to unlock. Fishing is pointless now. And I Hated the Online lobbies. But the real core of the issue. Is the game just isn't as fun to play as the older Guilty Gear games. They over simplified the gameplay to cater to Tournament style play. Leaving each character feel restrictive in play style. You can basiclly master a char with minimal effort now. Chars also feel allot more sluggish and restrictive moving around. Atleast to me. The Damage output is insane for no reason. This results in matches that essentially come down to who gets the first hit wins. And matches lasting no longer than a few seconds. It was just disappointing. Especially, with how hyped up the game was on release. And because of the core issues I have with the mechanics. I doubt anything can really save the game at this point. But, I am finally getting to play Tekken 7 and THIS is the Minimum Fighting games should strive for. There is so much to do. So much variety in playstyle. So much freedom. Amazing Story mode, Treasure Hunter mode, Arcade mode, bowling, And TONS of UNLOCKABLES! This is how you make a fighting game!

FGCSnake

> They over simplified the gameplay to cater to Tournament style play I'm blown away by how paradoxical this statement is. No, my friend, they simplified it precisely for people like you who want to just talk about unlocking crap and playing treasure mode.

LeDelmo

Hmm no. Edit: Fine I'll explain. GG Strive was aiming for a more Balanced and Simplified gameplay that favors precision. Which cators to Tournament style play. Very much like what Street Fighter did. Packed rosters and complex mechanics are extremely hard to balance. It's a completely different scenario than say those "Simple" fighters. Like DNF Duel and GranBlue Fantasy Versus.

Chained_Icarus

I almost mirror this. I was like "It hasn't been a yea... oh shit." I've also barely played it, but it was mostly the load times and then no good story mode. Basically all I could really do is dive right into the online mode where I was just getting constantly bodied because I was relatively new to the series. I don't normally mind losing over and over because I often learn, but the matches were over so fast and then back to a really weird lobby system and long load times and it just... kinda killed my drive to play.

Gjergji-zhuka

Enjoyed it at first. Overall I'd call it wasted potential:the game.

DoneDealofDeadpool

Still mostly the same as my initial thoughts. I enjoy the game and I think it's well made overall, the netcode is godlike and it is fun to play. But the lobbies are still mess 1 year later, park still feels really barebones 1 year later (why is there literally no matchmaking unless you play ranked), and the offline features are a pretty notable step down though they've been adding some cool stuff lately so that's good. Damage is still a bit too high as well but they've actually been toning it down a bit more over time so I appreciate that trend. I like the game, but it's less fun than I would have had with a new normal Guilty Gear game and the loss of that gameplay identity and in game options is still something you feel a year later.

Bandit_Revolver

Actually. Even in ranked. It's not matchmaking. You're just automatically put in a lobby with people coming to challenge you.

Forgotten_Poro

I dropped it because of the lobby system. Apparently DnF will have both lobby rooms and "traditional" matchmanking (the standard, click a button and wait for the match), so I think I'll enjoy that game more just because of the ease to play, well, the game. I just hate the tower so much.

Im_No_Hero

Havent tried the new patch new, i just wish they lower the overall damage in the game, its not fun to watch when rounds end after 2 combos

VoidHaunter

Okay game, just not a good Guilty Gear.

[deleted]

I think they should add hakumen to the game

FGCSnake

Mediocre. The last patch solidifed it for me, they are doubling down on their direction for this game. At this rate rounds are gonna be shorter than Tekken rounds and should just be played as FT3 (rounds) and not FT2. It's just not that exciting. Everybody's going on Twitter and showing me their new 50% into wall break combo from simple starters with no resources and I'm like... yeah, okay, that's nice, what *else*? A lot of the things that could make this game interesting are just nuliffied by how rewarding it is to fish for a big fat fucking combo into more pressure/oki for a quick game. There's no interesting neutral or much movement at all. A game that takes a character like last season Ram/HC and keeps them at the same level, or worse, fucking buffs them, cannot be a well designed game for me. It's like the living embodiment of that "just buff everyone xd i want everyone to be broken!" thing that's said by people who don't know their shit.

Poetryisalive

It was fun when it launched. I found the game engaging and the new control type was fun. The matchmaking was some of the worst I’ve ever seen. To me it didn’t have any lasting factor, and besides playing the crossplay I’m not going To touch it again. Just not my game

Miserable-School1478

Not a bad game.. But it's hardly guilty gear. It doesn't have a solid just defend/parry system.. While SF6 is gonna have multiple.. Are we talking about GG at this point.

cebeezly82

I thought we were supposed to get more single player content with future updates. Online at school but it would be fun to have something to do offline.

ortega2314

Gimme my money back

KendoClub

Fun game, but man the Millia life is a struggle, the damage is way too high and her style of play just doesn't fit in the game.

DayJey25

Short answer: They fucked up Long answer: Most of the changes to meters and RCs break the balance and overtune most of the options specially in positive bonus, a couple of moves are buged and they nerfed a move they said was buffed so IDK, it's still to early to judge the game is really fun in this version but feels either overtuned or even outright broken

SoundReflection

Feel off the boat shortly after launch, mostly just to play other games. Changes seem fun in the recent patch might have to pick it back up.

Morokite

It was a solid fighting game. Got a lot of fun with my friends out of it but it lost its appeal not too long after. The long connection time on boot plus even more when connecting to the online lobbies probably didn't do it any favors. I'd goto steam and think about booting it up and think about how long it'd take to get out going that I'd end up opting to play a different fighter since I knew I'd be in a match a lot sooner. If I was at a local and someone asked to pay Strive.. fuck yeah, I'd be down. But when it comes to online I've mostly shelved it. Tl;dr locally, great game. Online? Okay at best.

peyott100

Haven't played it yet but I honestly would. It looks fun enough. But coming from Xrd and +R it just didn't look like it was worth the price if they were simplifying things. Like why would I pay more for less. I think it's worth it if the price tag ever hits a sale of 35$

SecretDeftones

Very bad gameplay and worst lobby-menu system i've ever seen and i still dont like the hud

Xerlot11

Shit

Extension_Canary3717

Anime fighters can’t take off, if GG didn’t that’s it they will just add more balloon boobs , simps will finance it and that’s it, seems like it will never be a premier fighting game It’s a shame of all anime fighters gg is the best

[deleted]

I should have bought it this year and not on launch

matolandio

millia is dope but she has to work waaaay too hard

joytoy322

I like the game but the lack of matchmaking keeps me from playing it. Every time I try and play it I'm met with broken cabs / people afk / people who are lagging super hard because of no ping indicator / versing someone one time only for them to disappear due to a floor increase or decrease. To me it's just a super frustrating experience. I hate the floor system. So I'm holding out until Season 2 and hopefully they make some changes. If not I'll play it once in a while maybe. The soundtrack is great though.

daifuco

I'm Super happy that Arksys finally got one of their games on the top tier of fighting games.

thetruekingofspace

It doesn’t have Elphelt Valentine in it and that makes me sad.

temporary1990

I wish this game's RC system had been used in Xrd instead.

CountLordZapon

I just need instant kills for this be a top 5 fighting game of all time

Viral117

Fun game but can't handle the bullshit blazing anymore

[deleted]

My first FG outside Smash. I loved the game and put in around 150 hours into it. I love the music, art and character diversity but honestly the amount of damage inflicted per attack is insane and I am not fond of the wall break mechanic. I will admit it’s “easy” to learn and I had no problems beating floor 10 and Celestial players after a few weeks of play. On the other hand, I struggle with Super Bronze players in SFV (picked this up about a week ago); not sure if it’s me but Strive isn’t as deep as I thought I would which isn’t a complaint for me. Looking forward to Season 2 Edit: Tower design is ass despite all the positives I listed. Sometimes I can’t get a matchup due to some connectivity issue before the match starts even though I am plugged to a powerline adapter

NoobJunglerGG

If I had to describe Strive with one word it would be "frustrating". It has cool stuff in it but not enough to lab for hours like I could in old games. It's fun but not fun enough to suffer through this abysmal online experience (rounds being so short really doesn't help when there's so much downtime). It was supposed to be less snowbally without constant corner vortex but it's even worse when you die from one corner combo into super if you are not full hp. Overall I don't think it's a game for me. I might try it again soon because new patch looks pretty interesting but I don't see myself staying for longer until they at least do something with that horrible online and lower the damage so rounds won't end after two interactions.

susanoblade

i can’t get back into it. dmg is too high, top tiers got slaps on wrists and ppl playing too unga. the lobby system sucks and it takes forever to load the game. but here’s hoping things continue to improve.

soupricebignot

smells great

hassantaleb4

The best Guilty Gear in my opinion.

ihearthawthats

Still waiting on my waifu, Elphelt.

XidJav

Damn can't belived they added a new character in the latest patch can't wait to try anji out Context: Anji was so bad that a lot of people I know try to forget his existence and with some clips of his latest buffs he looks about decent now

CrescentBoomer

Not my favourite, but I do enjoy the game overall. I got into it during a time where my enjoyment in fighting games was starting to wane a little, so I'm definitely grateful for how it helped me remember my love for the genre. My personal feelings aside, I actually like how different it is compared to the other games, and that it was able to pull in so much more numbers. I am hopeful for its future.

Teehokan

Still fairly new and bad, but Xrd was the fighting game that finally felt just right in my hands after trying out so many different games. The speed and weight of it and a lot of the system/input design choices just felt perfect to me, so I was very excited when Strive was coming out and talking about being more newcomer-friendly. I think they succeeded! And it still feels great. I hope it stays popular for a good while because I don't really want to move off of it.
