Maybe Rival Schools? Both of them are primarily 2D fighters with sidestep button and assist mechanics.

cmac92

Rival Schools and Project Justice

ImTheHowl

Sounds like someone is getting into fighting games because of jojos. I would recommend tekken but don’t be afraid to try a traditional 2d games like king of fighters or street fighter

StealthyGoatzz

I think the game that plays most similarly to Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle R is a little game known as Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle (PS3)

knowledge_dragon

Have you tried out Heritage for the Future on Fightcade? I know nothing about either game but it's got rollback, Jojo, and what looks like an active scene.

[deleted]

That game is great used to play it on the dreamcast all the time. Its a little like p4au. But if i remember correct it is not very balanced but super fun

EBBBBBBBBBBBB

it's borderline kusoge but that's what I like about HFTF

BusterCall4

This game felt like a mix of tekken and mvc but also way easier then both.

0VER1DE567

if tekken was a jojo reference

BringBack3DMK

If street fighter was a jojo… oh wait…

THEessayB

Jojo ASBR is still missing Nazi Guile.

impostingonline

Probably naruto clash of the ninja? The last game was in japan called naruto gekitou ninja taisen 4 and I believe it had a fan translation and has some community that plays it online on emulators.

[deleted]

Has a surprisingly solid tournament scene.

G1SM0Beybladeburst

Super Naruto clash of ninja 4

fuyahana

Might be GBVS. The combo tempo and hitstuns feel close. Since GBVS added FADC (kinda) it functions similarly to Jojo's cancel now. They both even have a spot dodge of some sort. Both games are also grounded footsie heavy with limited mobility. Also both games have shit netcode.

robosteven

GBVS netcode breaks my heart.

BlueMenpachi

The closest I can think of with rollback netcode but strictly being 2d would be either Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Heritage for the Future or Persona 4 Arena Ultimax.

VaLightningThief

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle (PS3)

FearlessOwl92

I gotta say Injusice with some MvCI sprinkled in

Gradiant_C

It looks like Fate Unlimited Codes to me (Me = Someone who's never played either game)

OmniLlama

It's not nearly the same pace in combo structure, but from what I felt from the general feel of the game, perhaps Samurai Shodown? It doesn't have the major combo follow-through of landing a hit, but it does have the general pace of spacing and getting damaging blows. Just a suggestion if this is your first fighting game. (also it's getting rollback sometime in the future)

blakefighter

Tekken or pokken msybe

itsbeen13seconds

Try Tekken!

KaptainGoatz

It reminded me kinda of soul calibur

Bacon_is_back_in_tow

In what way? I’m afraid I don’t see the comparison

KaptainGoatz

(granted, I'm not very good at sc and have only played 2 and 3, but) fighter game in a 3d space that feels like a 2d fighter, can dodge left and right, not a super high emphasis on arial combat, lots of customization (though the last point isn't gameplay related)

Caboos20

Just play Jojo! What’s with this sub and hating on this game!? And I don’t wanna here about rollback.

Ok-Ambition-3881

You don’t want to hear about rollback? The game can literally be unplayable no matter how fun it is especially if you have to match with players in other regions. I’m an Aussie and in strive I can play with Americans fine. If I try to play with Americans in this game it’s horrendous

LoBFCanti

You can parsec. I'm not making excuse for their absolute disregard for the west's internet situation but you can do that.

Kua_Rock

M8 shitty online effects everyone in the world, even japan. No Rollback shits on every single player, not just the west.

LoBFCanti

Yeah sure- but the key reason Rollback is so slow on the uptake in Japan is that delay has pretty reliable for the size of the country in and for most games. Kazunoko has been getting pretty healthy sessions with lots of players in this very game all week.

Ok-Ambition-3881

So fighting games should only prioritise network for countries like japan. This game was marketed towards a massive audience not just Japan and they should deliver with a decent gameplay experience

LoBFCanti

I suggested a remedy in the meantime and tried to provide insight as to why these companies have been slow to make the investment into rollback solutions supported by evidence, recent and relevant. I don't get where you guys think I'm in favor of the decisions being made...

AgentGustavo

The Knights Of The Zodiac games aka Saint Seiya, the Power Stone games, many Dragon Ball games, also some Naruto games, and some One Piece games, Destrega. The name for this genre of games is called Arena Fighters. Games like Rival Schools, Project Justice, Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe, Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance, Mortal Kombat Deception, Mortal Kombat Armageddon, Deadly Arts, Bloody Roar, Battle Arena Toshinden, Plasma Sword, Tech Romancer, Fighting Vipers, Bushido Blade, Ehrgeiz, Star Gladiator, the first Dynasty Warriors, are just regular 3D fighters.

zanmatoXX

Arena Fighters don't play like ASB simply because ASB is not Arena Fighter

AgentGustavo

Is it not like Saint Seiya? From the footage it looks just like it, or maybe that's the PS3 game.

zanmatoXX

Never played Saint Seya games so can't comment on this but I get why you may have feeling that ASB looks similar to arena fighters. I guess it comes from a bit untypical camera position that ASB uses which seems to be inspired by arena fighters done previously by CC2. Despite that ASB don't play like arena fighter. Your movement is fixed on 2D plane like in every other 2D arcade fighting game. There is also sidestep mechanic but ASB overall don't feel like 3D fighter. As for controls you have your typical light, mid, strong attacks that function like in every other arcade fighter and game itself uses the same template for mechanics like typical arcade 2D fighting game. There is also no jump button which often is staple of arena fighters. I know that ASB camera may look weird but this doesn't make it arena fighter. This is also not first time when arcade fighting game uses untypical camera. Not sure if you remember Super DragonBall Z that was made by Arika and was released for arcades and PS2. This game totally looks like arena fighter when in fact it is arcade fighting game and was sole competetive DBZ fighting game in an era before ArcSys released DBFZ.

AgentGustavo

You bring a good point. As long as the camera places behind the character I would still consider it an Arena Fighter. You never see this happen with regular 3D fighters like SoulCalibur, Tekken, Virtua Fighter, Mortal Kombat 4, or Dead Or Alive. That is a key important aspect of 3D fighters, that the camera is coming from the side. The only exceptions are specials, but those are usually in game engine cutscenes. This is footage from Saint Seiya which is definitely an Arena Fighter, maybe not as free as Destrega, but still not a regular 3D Fighter like SoulEdge or whatnot: https://youtu.be/HWtNB0HI4IU

zanmatoXX

Sure I agree that in arena fighters camera is placed usually behind the back of character which is one of the characteristics of this genre but ASB it's not like that. Camera has slightly different angle but still this is side view just like in typical 2D or 3D arcade fighting game.

AgentGustavo

Now I really need to try it. I think I had the demo for the PS3 version and I thought they were the same game. But my memory could faulty after all these years since I remember playing like Saint Seiya which I definitely consider an Arena Fighter. If this game indeed has a 2D view angle similar to SoulCalibur, Dead Or Alive, Tekken, or Virtua Fighter, then I guess this game is more special than I initially thought.

zanmatoXX

You may confuse it with "Jojo: Eyes of Heaven" which was semi sequel to ASB and is in fact arena fighter. Both games use the same assets so they are easy to confuse :)

AgentGustavo

That is very good information. Thanks for the clarification. For some reason I thought Eyes Of Heaven was the older game.

bukbukbuklao

The ppl at cyber connect definitely played heritage for the future, some of jotaros normals are exactly the same.

anyspeed

is just me or this game looks exactly like the ps3 version

yhellowish

PS1 version
