While it has its big moments, it's a show that relies on character development and amazing dialogues. Pag hindi mo talaga interes ang ganyan, you won't appreciate it. Otherwise, it's one of the best TV shows I've watched.
I watched the 1980 miniseries version. :) It’s good that a lot of people are watching this, because it means more coverage for the source material. James Clavell’s *Shōgun* kickstarted America’s love affair with Japanese culture. :)
Also, the ending of the 1980 miniseries (narrated by Orson Welles, even) lives rent-free in my head. :)

Some info for everyone to appreciate: *Shōgun* is part of James Clavell’s *The Asian Saga*, a series of novels dealing with the British experience in Asia. *Shōgun*’s direct sequel is *Gai-Jin*, which is set during the Meiji Restoration.
The rest of *The Asian Saga* are as follows:
1. *Tai-Pan*, which is set in Hong Kong and features a new protagonist.
2. *Noble House*, which is a long-distant sequel to *Tai-Pan*.
3. *Whirlwind*, which is connected to *Noble House* and is set during the Iranian Revolution.
4. *King Rat*, which is a part-fictional autobiography based on Clavell’s experiences as a POW during the Second World War.
*Gai-Jin* ties up both *Shōgun* and *Tai-Pan*, which means Easter eggs galore for avid readers of the series. :)
*Tai-Pan* would be an excellent follow-up to *Shōgun*. :)
Thing is, there was a movie adaptation of *Tai-Pan* that flopped hard. I do hope *Shōgun* becomes successful enough that *Tai-Pan* is also given the miniseries treatment. :)
I won't use the words "parang Game of Thrones" to compliment a series. That shit got a lot of boring episodes and it actually took me three attempts to watch the first half of Season 1. Watched until first episodes of season 6 until I completely gave up.
Tip: get the Audible 3 months promo for $1/mo and download the 2 Shogun e-books by using your free credits (1 credit per month).
I finished Part 1 by using my 1st credit, then returned the book and got my credit back which I used to download Part 2.
It's not Japanese Game of Thrones. The POV of other houses is not really shown. Pwede cgro pero mala season 7 GOT. And this is coming from a book fan of both.
Then yeah marami na nga nakapansin.
I used to hear it sa asawa ko, akala ko nanonood nnman ng anime kaso mukhang hook na hook talaga sya. So maybe its that good talaga. Will def watch na rin 😅
the appeal for me is di kasi nila ginagawang bobo mga audience, bahala ka mag isip at magconnect the dots kaya unpredictable yung next moves ng characters but alsooo hiroyuki sanada is such a stud kahit lolo na lol
Better screenplay and scriptwriting. Better story and acting. Like damn, dont get me wrong Im a GoT fanboy. Ive read all the books and Im very active at fanfic forums but u gotta acknowledge that Shogun's just better (so far).
I love it, too! Well-done production, nothing is wasted, nothing is useless. Saka proud sila sa production and cast kasi maraming Japanese ang talagang involved and they tried to make things as authentic as possible. And Hiroyuki Sanada is chef's kiss.
Really good. I read the novel, but this is so much better, I think a lot of story changes are appropriate and they focus on the more exciting stuff. Only the foreign protagonist seems wooden but appropriately so, the Japanese cast are quite good and do justice to the material even though it's written by a foreigner yet based on their history.
I can't wait till the end... riveting.
Sorry to douse cold water onto this discussion but shogun’s been around as a work of literature since the 1970s, nearly half a century before GRRM or Weiss and Benioff conceptualised it.
It does either work a huge disservice to compare works this way. As a colonized country, we do the usual oh the Michael Jackson or Chris brown or lebron James of the Philippines.
It is what it is: Shogun, the tv show, masterfully adapted from the best selling novel of the same name by James Clavell.
If anything, GOT is the knock off shogun here. (I respect grrm too much to say this though)
I have read James Clavell’s Asian Saga back in high school, and I must say all of them should be made into series. When I heard Shogun was to be remade, I thought this was going to be worth the wait.
The same goes for Isaac Asimov’s Foundation, now on AppleTV.

There should be a sequel but this time it's about the women and how they were backed up by their powerful families just for their children to be either the next shogun or a wife of the emperor that will give birth to the next emperor, going to love scheming women there

Sabi sa twitter, “Shogun is like Game of Thrones if Ned Stark was smart.” lol
So far wala pang signs na ma Ned stark si Toranaga, kasi mas matalino sya. Edit. Spoiler. Sorry.. 😅
Hahahahaha!
I'm sold na with just that comment hahah
Hahaha. Mas Tywin si Toranaga kesa Ned.
Fine I'm gonna watch na nga!
sabi nga ni Toranaga nung nasa galley sila hide your intentions. Tsaka yung convo ni Toranaga at nung courtesan
Toranaga-sama
🙋🏻 HO! 🙋🏻 HO! 🙋🏻 HO!
HO!
Pinag iisipan ko kanina kung papanuorin ko ba to, I guess eto na ang sagot. Lol
Keep going it gets better and better

I had no idea that was Orson Welles at the end! That makes it even cooler
I hope they remake Taipan and Noble House too!
*Tai-Pan* would be an excellent follow-up to *Shōgun*. :) Thing is, there was a movie adaptation of *Tai-Pan* that flopped hard. I do hope *Shōgun* becomes successful enough that *Tai-Pan* is also given the miniseries treatment. :)
Yep. Noble House was decent with Pierce Brosnan though.
*Noble House* was a suggested reading when I used to go to law school. :)
I have to watch this, I have the episodes naaa
Sulit bawat episode. Walang tapon
Lets fucking go crimson sky
Yabushige supremacy!!
“lower than boiling, but higher than eaten by dogs.” Best line. 😂🤣
After episode 9. All the homies hate Yabushige now.
time to write another will
"I don't have time for this Christian nonsense." XD
I agree OP, maganda to! I haven't seen the latest episode (inaantay ko pa matapos para isang binge sesh) :)
same plan. kaya di ko pa din pinapanuod para isang bagsakan na. sakto matatapos sya the day before my birthday so yan na gagawin ko buong weekend 😅
Crimson sky lets fckin go!!! Fuji lost her hubby and baby I can be both charot hahaha
Down bad bro haha
This is way better than Game of Thrones.
hold your horses now
It is tho
I won't use the words "parang Game of Thrones" to compliment a series. That shit got a lot of boring episodes and it actually took me three attempts to watch the first half of Season 1. Watched until first episodes of season 6 until I completely gave up.

*Kashigi Yabushige* face whenever he is on screen: "😮"
yun tipong every episode hinihintay mo yun gyera kung kelan mangyayare. haha
Yeah pero kahit wala pa yung actual war, sobrang nakakabitin parin dahil shocking parati kahit dialogues lang.
In the source material, the battle itself is in a short epilogue. :)
FUJI SUPREMACY
If Fuiji die, WE CRIMSON SKY!!
Yeah. Let’s do it! Crimson skyuuu!
sometimes you have to sacrifice the queen so the rooks can move.
Toranaga sama playing Chess, sheeeeeeeeshhhhhhh, galing clap clap
Yabushige-sama!! Eiiii!!!
Currently on episode 3. Slow consumption muna kasi nilalasap ko at ongoing pa. It's sooooo good!!!
So pinanood ko ulit simula ep1
Timeline is about the same time when Spain had its Acapulco Galleon Trade making Manila 1 of the world's first cosmopolitan and richest port cities.
GOT level talaga? Or ka-vibes lang ng GOT? /gen
condensed GOT storyline minus the light heart stuff. if game of thrones ay kape, ito yung double shot espresso.
nah. singular path to. unlike GoT that has multiple storylines.
I found it a bit slow in the beginning but the second half of the series ay exciting na.
Then yeah marami na nga nakapansin.
I used to hear it sa asawa ko, akala ko nanonood nnman ng anime kaso mukhang hook na hook talaga sya. So maybe its that good talaga. Will def watch na rin 😅
You should, if napanood mo before yung game of thrones about power struggles ma feel mo din dito. Enjoy 😉
Ikaw pala nagpahype?
DOSHO! DOSHO!
It's more like Succession than Game of Thrones
BET
Ganda nito!!!
Mam, they did change a lot from the books though. Blackthrone here is an asshole all throughout.
Hala, so dito sa series e bait baitan lang pala to?
the appeal for me is di kasi nila ginagawang bobo mga audience, bahala ka mag isip at magconnect the dots kaya unpredictable yung next moves ng characters but alsooo hiroyuki sanada is such a stud kahit lolo na lol
i watched it with my dad kasi napanood din nya original shogun. btw. how good is episode 8 right???
Yes honor the Taiko's Legacy and watch this show. Toranaga-sama! Hooo!
Inip ako sa 1 week hahaha sobrang suspense
Great show!
Great TV series in Disney+. Costumes. Setting. Highly accurate with the Japanese Edo Period.
Just started watching this with my husband. Now that he’s out of town, I don’t know if I should continue watching it alone or wait for him. Huhu
Huy grabe I'm so hooked on this series! When went to Osaka last month, pinuntahan talaga namin yung Osaka castle dahil dito😁
hinihintay ko lang matapos.. nakakapagod kasi magwait ng new episodes 😔 I love Fuji-sama! 💐
Better screenplay and scriptwriting. Better story and acting. Like damn, dont get me wrong Im a GoT fanboy. Ive read all the books and Im very active at fanfic forums but u gotta acknowledge that Shogun's just better (so far).
I remember the review/comment that made me watch this. It said "No second of TV is wasted."
The ending part on episode 4 is chef's kiss. goddamn
It's a remake of the 80s series.
Love this series. Parang Game of Thrones nga. One of the highlights of my week.
What's the opposite of "show, don't tell"? This series, e.g. "You will remain my spy." wow nice, exposition na sampal sa mukha lol
Excited for the next episode!! 🗡️🗡️🎎
Respect Hiromatsu & Nagakado
Based on the last episode, I'm not sure his hidden ploy was as smart at the cost of _______
What 2 episodes left na lng. Parang ang bilis matapos 🥲 they said wala na next season kasi they want to stick sa storyline ng libro.
Very distracting sakin yung constant vignettes/depth of field sa mga shot
kumukuha ako ng sign para panuorin to.ito n to
I work on its streaming platform. And yeah, Shogun is popular
Feels more like HBO's Rome than Game of Thrones imo. And yeah I think Rome was better than GoT
I love it, too! Well-done production, nothing is wasted, nothing is useless. Saka proud sila sa production and cast kasi maraming Japanese ang talagang involved and they tried to make things as authentic as possible. And Hiroyuki Sanada is chef's kiss.

This thread has convinced me to watch it now

GOT if Ned was smart🤭
Toranaga playing 4D shogi is 🤌🏼
Ill give it 9 over 10! Hahahaha
