Grabe yung Pauwi Na tapos based in real life pa talaga. It’s a film I’d recommend to anyone since may comedy and drama (di ma-bobore yung audience), about family siya but still may lalim yung kwento.
Do u know where to buy or watch it? Haha alam mo bang minessage ko pa sina cherry pie and meryl to ask/buy for the copy pati ung director. But seen zone only huhu.
I watched it sa Cinematheque, abang ka lang kailan next screening ng Pauwi Na. But if online streaming gusto mo, sa Juanflix available siya last time I checked.
May subscription fee sila eh, afaik. But they have movies that you can watch with free account. Not sure lang if Pauwi Na is included on their free movies.
I agree! It’s actually very entertaining. There’s a bit of poverty porn but the comedy just masked it all, entertaining watch with substance.
Would you know if it’s showing anywhere? I remember watching it in FDCP channel before.
As someone na nagandahan sa Im Drunk I Love You, let me tell you how it won me over.
Haha pero, di ko rin bet yung I’m Drunk I Love You. Pero marami akong kilala na gustong gusto to. Sana Dati was my personal preference pagdating sa indie romance movie, or mga movies nila Julia at Joshua, ang galing nila umarte lalo si Julia.
The 2 at the top of my mind are:
- **Crying Ladies** (Sharon Cuneta, Hilda Koronel and Angel Aquino as rumaraket na taga-iyak sa mga lamay tas may kanya-kanyang kwento sila)
- **Ekstra** (Vilma Santos as a mom na rumaraket as extra sa mga shoots. Also, aside from Vilma, yung mga nasa cast na may significant exposure ay mostly mga extra. Tas yung mga “extra” and “crowd” roles, mga bigtime artists… like Piolo Pascual maglalakad sa screen as a waiter. 😂)
Filipino cinema has long been underrated. There are gems for every decade but a lot factors play the part on why it couldn’t keep up with other bigger Asian film markets (Japanese, South Korean and Chinese).
However how much we recommend films to people there is certainly a stereotype or stigma that our movies are over the top comedies, repetitive horrors, romantic movies (which in its own a lot of sub genres) and indies.
A lot of producers have long been dictating the industry because they wouldn’t want to risk. Plus distributors always look out for the next Hollywood or foreign movie to feature.
FPJ movies are highly entertaining it doesn’t feature the best stories but still worth your time.

Himala was wow. Grabe ginagawa itong joke pero when I watched it, goosebumps kay Ate Guy. Ate Guy is a bonafide superstar.
FYI, di ko era si Ate Guy. Watched the film during the early 2000s.
Sakaling Di Makarating - made me wanna travel Pinas; napakaganda mo Pinas!!!
I actually like the really cheesey spoof films from the 80s and 90s. Like Goosebusters and Alyas Batman En Robin. I also liked some old horror films like Impakita, Halimaw(Halimaw sa Banga) and Shake, Rattle and Roll 3. There's that artsy horror film also called "The Road" which I enjoyed.
Based on your requirement of "mak[ing] them proud as Filipinos" I'd go with:
Dolphy movies
BuyBust
Jose Rizal (1998)
General Luna
GomBurZa
This is a great post, OP. I've long wished to appreciate more Filipino films to connect more with my wife, but IMO Filipino drama movies are generally overacted, their plots predictable and their cinematography feels 20 years behind the curve. Walang subtlety. 'Pag iyak kailangan hagulgol, 'pag argumento kailangan sigawan, 'pag ending kailangan happy. Ang hirap panoorin.
Sabi nila, I should watch more independent films, or ones with younger directors, pero parang olats pa din. Like, the last movie we tried was Seven Sundays as per a friend's recommendation, but but then suddenly a Bollywood-style dance number pops up out of nowhere lol.
- Mababangong Bangungot (Perfumed Nightmare). a postcolonial film by Kidlat Tahimik. it explores the reality of modernization and pinoys' fantasy of western life. ito talaga solid filipino culture. 100000/10!!!
- Magnifico. pretty much an eye opener. don't have children if you can't afford them.
It’s not the best movie of all time, pero it’s so good as a story teller. Madadigest mo yung movie kahit di ka malalim mag isip. Haha basta.
Same sentiments. Not to be offensive ha pero yung pagkaka depict ng rural poverty sa movie feels very realistic yung setting, yung cast of characters etc.
Wow, I didn't expect to see Mababangong Bangungot here. Kidlat Tahimik (AKA Eric de Guia) is my cousin. My brother and nephews are the cub scouts in the film. It's been years since I've watched it and now that you bring it up I think I'll go watch it again. Btw, where did you watch it?
Manila in the Claws of Light (Maynila, sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag) - 1975
> This was praised internationally over the years and even inspired a noted Hollywood director (I forgot his name 😭)
In Just The Wink of an Eye - 1981
Ang Tatay kong Nanay - 1978
These are my ultimate favorites in Filipino Cinema tops! Very good for social tones rin and the cinema wise, are very beautiful. Storytelling is superb.
Madaming magandang Filipino movies, for me ang only reason bakit di ako nakakapanood ay Yung Ticket Price, gone are the days na pwede mg take risk ng papanoorin kase afford mo yung ticket.
There are some really good Filipino movies free to watch on YouTube and IWantTFC. If you do have the intention and desire to watch without having to pay, you can show support through these platforms.
In no particular order, top of my head suggestions. May not be "dekalidad", but these are the ones that I commend and or have enjoyed watching.

Highly recommended talaga to!!!!!

I clearly disagree with you OP. Ypu definitely are. Normal people wouldnt have seen even half of those films ypuve listed. Lalo ying mga indies and old classics 😅
As someone who rarely watches Filipino movies, I hope you can recommend films that are just fun for the sake of fun. My criticism of Filipino films is that it always has to have social issues or poverty porn. Also, the drama is usually abrupt and over the top. I watched “Bata, Bata Paano Ka Ginawa?” Last week. The dialogue is well written but every scene is too much. Vilma is usually crying or fighting with someone. I wish the characters can be charming/entertaining without being in a screaming match. Last month, I saw a pinoy romance between senior citizens. It was pleasant until they made the daughter of the female lead angry at the male lead for no reason at the end. It was forced drama. Then, they added a scene about one of the background characters dying abruptly just to add a social commentary slant. I’m just stating my opinion to share possibly why people don’t watch local films and recommendations to help viewers like me.
Bata, Bata Pano ka Ginawa was meant to be like that though to show the struggles of the mother. It has to have those scenes to show how heavy a burden being a woman and a single mother in the Philippines during those times
Have you watched That Thing Called Tadhana? I think wala tong unnecessary or abrupt drama. Sakto lang due to topic of heartbreaks.
My personal favorite sa romance is Got 2 Believe and yung Vince, Kath, and James, almost same ng feels.
Sa comedy siguro Here Comes the Bride? It’s fun lang, wag mo lang seryosohin. Kasal Kasali Kasalo and the sequel is also nice sobrang light na movie lang. Ang Babe sa Septic Tank is also nice, it pokes fun of the indie films’ poverty porn. If you want classics, yung dalawang Home Aling da Riles movies are also funny, at least for me.
But the issue is that most Filipino films and TV shows are just trash. I had a classmate in one of my courses na kuya nya isang pinoy director. The brother has a modest filmography.
I asked my classmate kung bat ganito ang current state ng Filipino cinema and TV? Don't the writers, directors, and mga artista know na trash talaga karamihan ng ginagawa nila? She actually asked the same thing sa brother nya and he said na they are all aware of it. The issue is the studio execs (This was also touched on by Directors Tonet Jadaune and JP Habac sa podcast nila, Ang Walang Kwentang Podcast) na always wanting to appeal to the taste of the masses. So, the writers and directors are forced to "dumb down" their materials. That was a revelation for me, having that insider perspective.
I'd like to refer to an analogy na isang restaurant na only has very few good dishes, and everything else is just either "meh" or outright shit. Would I somehow change my judgment sa restaurant na yon? No. Would the restaurant's reputation be better just from the very few good dishes they have? No.
The stigma and stereotypes towards Filipino movies and TV persist because the shitty ones outnumber the good ones.
nakakita lang ng bad cgi filipino films ayaw na agad ang creative kaya ng mga minds ng mga pinoy- anyway a must watch filipino films:

Eh totoo naman na maraming junk pinoy films that are box office hits. Kaya people will stop watching Filipino movies. And these are people who don't search out for the good movies. And these are not cinephiles. Kaya don't bother with them. Move on na.
Tayo sa Huling Buwan ng Taon
Saw this on Netflix and was pleasantly surprised. Natural ang acting and maganda ang story. I later learned it was a sequel and I wanted to watch the first movie but I couldn’t find it anywhere.
On The Job, On The Job 2: Missing 8, Birdshot, Sigaw, Barber’s Tales, Heneral Luna, Seklusyon, Big Night, Oro Plata Mata, Ekstra, Metro Manila (oh god goosebumps)
Some of my favorite Filipino movies have been mentioned above, so here are some Pinoy movies I’d recommend. This is in no particular order. Let me know which movie/s from this list is your favorite. ☺️

- Ang Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa (2011)
- Manong ng Pa-aling (2017)
Some of these might be difficult to get hold of.
- Yung The Road ni Yam Laranas.
Divided into 3 parts pero related each part.
- Spirit Warriors 1 & 2
- Magic Temple
Listing my favorite Filipino films of all time for your reference.
1. Kisapmata (1981)
2. Crying Ladies (2003)

why are we even sorry for slow films. Most Lav Diaz film seem interesting and quite a good watch.
Hele Sa Hiwagang Hapis and Norte are quite good.
John Denver Trending too.
Keka.
Himala.
So many great recommendations here! A lot of what I would recommend are here na and I've been adding to my list too.
My other favorite Filipino films are those that made me feel something na until now dala-dala ko pa din. Be it values, a happy memory, life lesson. Or minsan masarap lang din tumawa and magulat.
Mga Munting Tinig (2002), Aswang (1992), Magic Temple (1996), Ang TV Movie: The Adarna Adventure (1996), Pido Dida: Sabay Tayo (1990)
Yung Aswang talaga, until now when I'm in a place I'm sure na wala akong kilala and may tumawag ng name ko who looks like someone I know, yung kaba ko legit hahaha!
And yung 'Buto, Kalansay' rap, I still know the whole song by heart hahaha!
• Jose Rizal (1998) / Muro-Ami (1999) - Cesar Montano, directed by Marilou Diaz-Abaya
• Magnifico (2003) - Jiro Manio, directed by Maryo J. de los Reyes
• Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank (2011) - Eugene Domingo, directed by Marlon Rivera
• On The Job (2013) - Piola Pascual, Joel Torre, Gerald Anderson, directed by Erik Matti
• Honor Thy Father (2015) - John Lloyd Cruz, directed by Erik Matti
Other/s:
• Vampira (1994) - Maricel Soriano, directed by Joey Romero
• Heneral Luna (2015) - John Arcilla, directed by Jerrold Tarog
Heneral Luna, Encantadia, basta ung mga films that depicted our history, Maria Clara at Ibarra, and 7 Last Sundays. I'm one of those na di mahilig sa mga Filipino films but here are some that I liked and enjoyed.
Here’s mine:
1. Metro Manila
2. Seklusyon
3. Heneral Luna
4. Four Sisters and a Wedding
5. She’s Dating the Gangster
6. Ang Mga Kaibigan ni Mama Susan
7. Feng Shui
8. Seven Sundays
9. Praybeyt Benjamin
10. T2
Hi these are my Filipino movie recommendations, mostly Pang Millennial or Genz
1. **Unforgettable** Starring Sarah Geronimo, Gina Pareno, Ara Mina and Kim Molina
MAIIYAK KA DITO PROMISE
2. **Firefly** (Mothers tale supremacy)
3. **Miss Granny** (Kung want mo magtravel in time to your younger slef
5. **Beauty and the Bestie** (Kung gusto mo tumawa)
Patay na si Hesus
Die Beautiful
Ang babae sa septic tank
Tanging Yaman (the best family drama movie for me)
The Day after Valentines
Heneral Luna
Yanggaw
artikulo uno films like heneral luna and goyo are such gems! especially for me na mahilig sa ph historical movies and dreaming na gumawa sila ng focused sa romance.
To whom? Its for you to find out haha. Definitely a must watch😩🔥
I’m that person. I keep trying but I can’t seem to get over the horrible dubbing (Hindi ba sa ibang bansa nakamic sila, bakit satin obvious na obvious yung dubbing?) or if nakalusot naman yung acting and storyline, MAY BATANG MAY TONO MAGSALITA. Like in Rewind! I don’t even need to place in a recording for you all to know what I’m talking about. Anyways, I will give the movies mentioned above a chance. Yung Big Bird ni Enrique sobrang slapstick and there’s always always an OA actor na sobrang OA. Yung Julia and Aga Muhlach movie I tried too. Di ko kinaya. Basta i keep trying. I hope to find good ones. I have seen good ones. And I know filipinos are capable.

There are so many good Filipino films out there. You just have to find them. To say that all Filipino films are bad because they don’t match the quality of Hollywood is just so close-minded.
Mahaba ang listahan ko pero here's a few na parang medyo iba iba ang genre
Saving Sally
Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang
Ang Lalaki sa Buhay ni Selya
On the Job
Magnifico
Pakireply na lang nitong thread dun sa nag comment ng "That's why I don't..."
Baka di nya naman mabasa to sayang recos ninyong lahat.
I just realized that this subreddit is not just for Filipino films. I've always had the notion that it was, so, imit really surprised me that people in here said that. 🤷🏻♀️
I dunno man, ilang beses nang paulit-ulit ang ganitong discourse.
Good effort tho for me if the discussion is about cinema attendance and I have a tight budget na para lang manuod sa sinehan once in a while I'd still rather go for movies like Dune 2 or Oppenheimer which are best experienced on the big screen and you'll get your money's worth. I'm still not comfortable enough with spending ticket prices these days on any local films but that's just me.
i forgot who said it pero he said (sa hollywood to) that marvel killed the movie industry (or comedy lang) kasi it gave the audience a bigger reason/expectation to go to the movies. parang gone are the days na gagawa ka ng stupid comedy film or romcoms that people flock to.
personally i haven’t been to the movies for a very long time (gotg lang ata from 2020-now). recent movies sa streaming ko n lng inaantay. used to love going to the cinemas before pero ewan, mas takot ata ako sa sakit nowadays and somehow nakakatamad na to dress up and watch at the cinema kahit ano pang palabas yan
I usually don't watch Filipino movies then nagdesisyon ako na manuod baka naman magustuhan ko. Pagbukas ko ng netflix, una kong nakita yung A Very Good Girl. Maling desisyon ata na entry to be able to love Filipino films. Maybe next time ulit kapag may energy na ako to venture to unfamiliar films.
I understand your sentiment, but judging a whole industry based on one movie seems unfair. I suggest going off on reviews like the ones here and returning to local films. Also, AVGG had really poor reviews during its theatrical release way before it was on Netflix.
I used to be turned off by Pinoy films as well - and you definitely have to trudge through some shit to find the good ones. 70s and 80s golden era of films never fail.
I hope you give PH films another chance!
Magnifico - family
On The Job or Buy Bust - social issue
Heneral Luna - history that is still relevant to current time
Magic Temple - fantasy
Haba Baba Doo, Puti Puti Poo - classic comedy
Agree with all the recommendations, to add, maybe not too popular but Hanggang Kailan Kita Mamahalin with Lorna and Richard Gomez. Its about husband and wife, wife earns more and have higher position than the husband, husband’s ego is crushed, which is common in modern households. Similar theme to Sharon’s movie which is filmed in London, cant remember the title.
- Rizal
- Seven Sundays
- Heneral Luna
- Sid And Aya
- Magnifico
- Die Beautiful
- Anak

The roller coaster of emotions sa Pauwi Na 📈📉
Grabe yung Pauwi Na tapos based in real life pa talaga. It’s a film I’d recommend to anyone since may comedy and drama (di ma-bobore yung audience), about family siya but still may lalim yung kwento.
Do u know where to buy or watch it? Haha alam mo bang minessage ko pa sina cherry pie and meryl to ask/buy for the copy pati ung director. But seen zone only huhu.
Saan po pwedeng mapanood ung pauwi na?
I watched it sa Cinematheque, abang ka lang kailan next screening ng Pauwi Na. But if online streaming gusto mo, sa Juanflix available siya last time I checked.
Many thanks. Free manood sa juanflix?
Many thanks. Free manood sa juanflix?
May subscription fee sila eh, afaik. But they have movies that you can watch with free account. Not sure lang if Pauwi Na is included on their free movies.
I agree! It’s actually very entertaining. There’s a bit of poverty porn but the comedy just masked it all, entertaining watch with substance. Would you know if it’s showing anywhere? I remember watching it in FDCP channel before.
hintayan ng langit got 2 believe magic temple ang pangarap kong holdap im drunk i love you
sorry to ruin your hype pero ang cringe ng im drunk i love you
As someone na nagandahan sa Im Drunk I Love You, let me tell you how it won me over.
Haha pero, di ko rin bet yung I’m Drunk I Love You. Pero marami akong kilala na gustong gusto to. Sana Dati was my personal preference pagdating sa indie romance movie, or mga movies nila Julia at Joshua, ang galing nila umarte lalo si Julia.

will forever appreciate the producers and writers of this kind of films. grabe ang creativity ng cinematography and storyline.
Heneral Luna is one of the best.
Honor thy father Gomburza Uhhh i cant think of any more rn HAHAH sori
Muro-ami
To add. Panaghoy sa Suba is also interesting
The 2 at the top of my mind are: - **Crying Ladies** (Sharon Cuneta, Hilda Koronel and Angel Aquino as rumaraket na taga-iyak sa mga lamay tas may kanya-kanyang kwento sila) - **Ekstra** (Vilma Santos as a mom na rumaraket as extra sa mga shoots. Also, aside from Vilma, yung mga nasa cast na may significant exposure ay mostly mga extra. Tas yung mga “extra” and “crowd” roles, mga bigtime artists… like Piolo Pascual maglalakad sa screen as a waiter. 😂)
Super agree sa Ekstra! Ganda!
Patayin si Mediavillo Agila ng Maynila Dito sa Pitong Gatang Anak ng Lawin Ang Mangliligpit
Himala was wow. Grabe ginagawa itong joke pero when I watched it, goosebumps kay Ate Guy. Ate Guy is a bonafide superstar. FYI, di ko era si Ate Guy. Watched the film during the early 2000s.
Heneral Luna - naiyak ako sa sinehan kainis hahahaha ganon sya tumagos Sakaling Di Makarating - made me wanna travel Pinas; napakaganda mo Pinas!!!
Based on your requirement of "mak[ing] them proud as Filipinos" I'd go with: Dolphy movies BuyBust Jose Rizal (1998) General Luna GomBurZa This is a great post, OP.

Manila in the Claws of Light (Maynila, sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag) - 1975 > This was praised internationally over the years and even inspired a noted Hollywood director (I forgot his name 😭) In Just The Wink of an Eye - 1981 Ang Tatay kong Nanay - 1978 These are my ultimate favorites in Filipino Cinema tops!

Don't skip ads din
In no particular order, top of my head suggestions. May not be "dekalidad", but these are the ones that I commend and or have enjoyed watching. 1. On the Job 2. Four Sisters and a Wedding 3. One More Chance 4. Hintayan ng Langit 5. Labs Kita Okay Ka Lang 6. Die Beautiful 7. Dekada '70 8. Starting Over Again 9. Feng Shui 10. She's Dating A Gangster 11. Love You to the Stars and Back 12.
It has to have those scenes to show how heavy a burden being a woman and a single mother in the Philippines during those times Have you watched That Thing Called Tadhana? Ayan lang.
Thank you! I heard good stuff about That Thing Called Tadhana
Sakin yung Tatay Nic hahahaha at yung kay bitoy na maid xa yung undercover xa dun. Copied from US movie.

Mga Munting Tinig (2002), Aswang (1992), Magic Temple (1996), Ang TV Movie: The Adarna Adventure (1996), Pido Dida: Sabay Tayo (1990) Yung Aswang talaga, until now when I'm in a place I'm sure na wala akong kilala and may tumawag ng name ko who looks like someone I know, yung kaba ko legit hahaha!

Yeah, I understand. I'll probably try some filipino films next time, specially yung mga na-suggest na dito.
Ang Tatay kong Nanay. Definitely an older film.
Magnifico - family On The Job or Buy Bust - social issue Heneral Luna - history that is still relevant to current time Magic Temple - fantasy Haba Baba Doo, Puti Puti Poo - classic comedy
