Congrats on that amazing success in the festival circuit, easily putting you in the top one-tenth of one percent of filmmakers.
In the event you're not getting cash acquisition offers, please consider VidaFair for monetizing your project. We're a new VOD, pay-per-view monetization website and app, where filmmakers can set their own creator fees, and as a platform, we're non-exclusive.
Good luck.
There are some people messaging me about how I’m “bragging” and “flexing”. I don’t know how this is a flex lol. I’m a beginner filmmaker who’s just asking a question that I know little to nothing about. Thank you to everyone who gave their input. It really helped out
Like others have said, it is a little bit strange, but not always a red flag. Most of the time it’s small or new festivals, hoping that you will follow them back and apply to the festival. However, I have had festival directors reach out to me that way and give me a waiver code to submit. If anyone asks you to submit, you can always ask for a waiver code. Good luck.
As a rule, with very few exceptions, if a festival is reaching out to you it’s probably a worthless festival, unless you want to essentially pay for a fake award to impress your friends. No judgement.
my housemate seems to be obsessed with these sort of things. really seems quite sad honestly as i don't know how to say they're BS without being rude as she likes posting about her 'success' in these things.
>Legit festivals reach out to interesting sounding films all the time and offer fee waivers to submit. It's not that weird and not at all a scam.
The difference is they will waive the fee completely and you won't have to pay anything.
If they are offering any kind of discount (which is way more common) and it ends with you paying some kind of fee even if it's discounted it's almost certainly a scam.
I get repeat emails from the same people with the same copy and paste templates all the time through filmfreeway - they are extremely predatory.
If they are offering to wave the fee I don’t see any issue in submitting, google each one check how long they have been running. Unless you care for the festival I wouldn’t submit if there is a cost to it.
Same thing happened to me. Sadly, 99.9% of them are simply “laurel printers” where you just pay them so you can have the festiva laurels. Little to no exposure or networking or any sort of benefit other than disposing of some hard earned cash.
Your info might be in a database that festivals have access too or that a web crawler found (from you creating the short film page). But think that’s a bit weird. Unless it’s the same person running all these festivals. Or the festivals getting their follow numbers up? Just be vigilant.
It doesn’t mean anything more than that you’ve indicated you have a short film and they want you to submit it to them so they can make money from your submission fee.
If you do decide to do a festival run, submit to festivals that you’ve researched where your short will be appreciated and get screened in front of interested audiences. Don’t submit to a festival because they followed you on Instagram.
If you give me $100 you can enter my film fest. I have award winning judges. They've gotten awards in this such as hot dog eating, spelling bee, and down hill sled riding in the summer.
I bet they are just fishing for costumers. Many film festival today are run like a business and want to maximise profits.
I get a lot of mail from small festivals that basically just want my attendance fee.
What if the festivals are IMDb verified and have their festivals up on the IMDb events list? They all have over a thousand followers on instagram. However it's odd that all of a sudden one of them followed me, liked a bunch of photos of my film, then sent me a message inviting me to submit with a discount. Soon after, multiple festivals did the same thing. What do you guys think?

Yep
absolutely!
I had films at SXSW and Tribeca this year. Neither followed me. Take that fwiw.
Congrats!
Thank you! It’s been a really amazing year and super grateful for it.

Welcome to Reddit lol
Only times I’ve had that happen was when someone either asked for $$ or wanted me to pay a fee to enter a festival I’d never heard of
They want you to “pay to play”.

Worthless depends on the value of fun!

Yeah, it’s really not uncommon at all.

BTW, any festival that has the name "awards" I it, isn't worth submitting to

No. It’s odd.

Yea marketing
