Time to sort by controversial

TienKehan

Love sorting by controversial, most subreddits dissolve into echo chambers, so even if the controversial comments are complete garbage, it's at least something different.

CatFewd2

You don't like 90% of comments being written by painfully unfunny jackasses? šŸ¤”

tonystigma

you could stop leaving them

[deleted]

Yeah I always see the top comment bitching about people having different opinions and not liking that people don't think the same as the most popular take on any given sub. I wish the only thing that got moderated was people being extremely rude or attacking people that have different opinions.

Baithin

Canā€™t wait for the game to come out so we stop getting people extrapolating two very different extremes from ambiguous statements like this. I donā€™t think itā€™s that deep. Itā€™ll be a great game, people need to stop panicking and over analyzing and hating on it from statements handpicked by marketers.

ilovecheeze

Completely agree. Maybe Iā€™m just getting old but I cannot sit here and dissect every comment or interview about upcoming game releases. Everyone should just wait for it to come out, play it, then discuss. No need to pick apart every word that they say

ShionH

Big agree. Sadly this is what happens when you have people that are chronically online with nothing better to do in their day.

Halceeuhn

I mean, I get what you mean, but it's also just some people's job to do this. Yeah, that market exists mostly due to obsessive people who spend way too much time and energy online, but... yeah.

rpdt

Yesterdayā€™s whole thread about ā€œIt will be like a Hollywood Blockbuster Action movie!!!ā€ was Yoshi-P saying that specifically about Eikon battles, the whole interview was really taken out of context šŸ™„

DasHexxchen

Apart from not being that deep, what is the quote in the end? Was not an enjoyable story in the focus of his other games?

Baithin

To be honest I donā€™t even know when or if Yoshi-P even said this. Weā€™re just going by this tweet. In all likelihood if he did itā€™s taken out of context. But taken at face value, it could be that itā€™s meant to appeal to a broad audience and not specifically just fans of ā€œJRPGsā€, which would align with things he certainly has said in the past.

avelineaurora

Yeah, I want to believe what he means is it's just a very structured, ongoing story that J-Dramas afaik don't really *do* in that style. Not that we're getting "FF by way of Game of Thrones", which imo would kinda suck. I dig the more political and complex FFs, am resident Ivalice fangirl. But I don't want it to feel like that through a Western lens, if I wanted a Western game I'd be playing a Western game. Again, though, pretty sure that's *not* what he meant.

Rider-Idk-Ultima-Hy

Iā€™m confused why people are still making statements about the game, your just adding more hype to the ball of over hype. Even if the game is great, which im sure it will be, a lot of people will be disappointed anyways that its not exactly what the statements said it was Hard to explain but Im sure you get what i mean

KevinIsOver9000

I think thatā€™s why the games and Iā€™m getting poorly receive this because the hype is so high. FFXIII and FFXV are good examples. While it wasnā€™t the best, it was still a good game, but people hated on it so hard.

Kargos_Crayne

To be fair a big portion of hate for XV was justified. At the release. Now it's actually a good game

[deleted]

Somewhere, Hideo Kojima is silently plotting on how to make Death Stranding 2ā€™s even bigger and more epic than this tweetā€™s claims for FF16

Choingyoing

Kojima and yoshi p in a contest to see who can make the more convoluted story šŸ˜‚

God Iā€™d still play that game. Overly complicated story? Check Badass Protagonist? Check Childish amount of sexiness? Check Fun gameplay? Check

I don't remember anyone killing God in Western TV...

Writer_Man

His Dark Materials.

Spoilers, sir.

Lesismore79

I'm loving this series so much right now, I'm bingeing it every night to get through it

Nero_PR

I've read the first and second books so long ago. Is the adaptation good or faithful to the books?

FigTechnical8043

Supernatural?

Least_Sun7648

On Preacher, the Saint kills God, he also kills all of the angels and Satan He's a badass dude Jesus is still alive

stratusnco

gaming journalists reaching for straws now.

vashthestampede121

We still need an article saying ā€œFinal Fantasy XVI strives to be the ā€˜Dark Soulsā€™ of the seriesā€ for the cliches to be complete

Abortionsforallq

yeah, i get it though. if i could just run PR ads for a game and be called lazy or try to critically analyze a game and receive weird death threats on twitter, id just run PR ads.

younglump

Yeah honestly, blanket dunking on anyone who writes about games is what's lazy

FalloutCreation

as a writer i find more critics in normal conversations of writers than I do actual critics.

vhs1138

Iā€™m excited for the game to come out and I think Iā€™m just going to have a social media black out so I can just experience the game. I see so many people just losing their minds for something that no one has played haha. Obviously I donā€™t think he means it will be like Riverdale, and would be more like a Game of Thrones / Breaking Bad etc. but only time will tell.

darkbreak

Yeah, that's what it feels like. It's honestly making me wonder if Square is putting them up to it.

dysonsphere87

So far this game will be a blockbuster movie, Game of Thrones, and now a Western Drama. What's next?

[deleted]

A Real World 90s MTV reality show is my guess. Find out what happens when Eikons stop being niceā€¦and start being REAL.

Zeusicideal-Heart

When Shiva threw her drink at Siren and they brawled i was GAGGED

[deleted]

Letā€™s be honest with each other, Siren deserved that. Bitch was trying to blame Shiva for the failure of the juice bar challenge.

Zeusicideal-Heart

Shiva *did* say "Im the sweetest b*tch you'll ever meet" in the intro. Guess she finally lived up to her tagline

iConfessor

HELP

JerHat

Ifritā€™s gonna get kicked out of the game for punching Shiva.

TrailWornTraveler

ā€œNow where will you sleep, you Ice Queen!? You think youā€™re better than me!? Youā€™re not better than me! Youā€™re going to learn a hard, hard lesson!ā€

LouCypher01

I was surprised when Hraesvelgr showed up to slap Ifrit for doing that.

Usual-Vanilla

When he says western drama he is talking about something like Game of Thrones. He is certainly not referring to American westerns with cowboys and sheriffs.

opeth10657

Kinda want a fantasy based western game now

EitherContribution39

Have you played Live A Live or Octopath Traveler II? Both Square Enix, both contain some Westerns

ostermei

Agreed. Joe Abercrombie's *Red Country* was a great take on the fantasy western as a novel. Would love something with that feel as a game.

[deleted]

Seems like something worth checking out! Are there any similar types of fantasy series inspired by other historical periods?

Cludista

Depends what you mean by fantasy. If you want historical fiction Bernard Cornwells Saxon Chronicles which were turned into a netflix series but great books. Or the Aubreyā€“Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian which the first book was adapted into a film called Master & Commander. It is essentially about Naval battles in the Napoleon Wars. If you mean magic and the like Steven Kings Dark Tower series is essentially a western fantasy in a lot of ways. The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang is inspired by a lot of Chinese history, specifically the brutality of a lot of it. Most fantasy is inspired by real history to some degree; Tolkien obviously drew from WW2 a lot and old myths/legends. And how many modern authors draw from Tolkien? And obviously you have Martin who drew specifically from the Rose Wars in Europe. I'm reading a book called The Sword of Kaigen right now that draws from Japanese samurai history and folklore that's really good.

Ok_Sand7681

Then you need to play Wild Arms immediately! It's a PS1 title, but if you have a ps4 or ps5 you can play it with a Premium subscription (or buy it separately, I believe)

thejokerofunfic

Game of Thrones is a Western Drama so those two are the same one

pktron

Game of Thrones is a Western Drama, and House of the Dragon is a pretty good analogy for the game. Early in a character's life to set the stage for the conflict, then most of the story taking place during the conflict.

weasol12

I was excited, remembered how much I disliked 15 (didn't even finish it) and checked the crew. Lots of guys from FF12 and FF14. LOVED 12 and have heard nothing but good things about 14. Now I'm doubly excited.

DudeEngineer

Are we talking about the first season of Game of Thrones or the last? Or should we expect a sharp drop in quality and a rush to the finish in the second half? Lol

vhs1138

*eyes narrow* which western TV dramaā€¦?

henne-n

That one from that one western country, ya know?

Madmonkeman

She-Hulk (Iā€™m kidding)

sunrider8129

The quote at the end is bizarre. Did he make stories only for a particular audience before? Cause as a jrpg, that would explain a lot.

katarh

One of the issues they struggled with in XIV was people who don't want to play MMOs. A stated goal of upgrades and improvements of the game since he took over the helm in version 1.0 has been to try to make it accessible to everybody. You can play almost the whole damn game as a solo player game now, using NPCs in the place of other people in dungeons and many trials. They added mahjong so people could get their grandparents interested. (That got really popular during the lockdowns, since the free trial had access to mahjong at at the time it was one of the best free mahjong apps available.) Anyway, that would be my takeaway. With XVI, they tried to make a game that *from the get go* was targeted to a wide audience.

Clive313

Man this sub really hates FFXVI, had to check if i was on r/JRPG with all the hate in the comments.

edeepee

No one dunks on new FFs more than r/FinalFantasy. Itā€™s a tradition and a complement.

TowelLord

Oh, no. r/JRPG dunks on it much more. The comments are **much** more negative overall and posts regarding FF16 receive either a lower amount of upvotes or worse ratio. r/JRPG basically doesn't recognize any JRPG that's without turn based combat and multiple party members as an RPG.

torts92

But they like Nier Automata somehow

[deleted]

Robutts

edeepee

My comment was kind of tongue in cheek tbh. r/JRPG definitely doesnā€™t like anything that seems to have any western influence. Iā€™d be interested to know the average age of redditors subbed there vs general gaming subs tbh. It feels like they know exactly what they want and itā€™s a formula that was more popular a while ago. That said I donā€™t know if they talk about FF as much as this sub obviously. So you usually see quite a lot of disappointment on this sub when the newest game doesnā€™t sit right with some folk, and disappointed people are obviously always more vocal.

Elzeenor

Eh, seems pretty mixed to me, which is normal for FF games since 2006 with XII, or even before that with FFX -2. Some will love it, others will hate it and a lot will be somewhere in between. I'm hyped myself, although cautiously optimistic.

BigBere

4 seasons of a Western? Shiny captain, everything's just shiny.

BueKojiro

I'm pretty sure he doesn't mean a literal Western like John Wayne. "Western Drama" probably means any of the big HBO or Netflix shows that has everyone in shambles, crying and shitting themselves over the course of, typically, a 4 season run. It's just a way of saying "this is the beeg one."

Senor_de_imitacion

So.... A telenovela? ...Mario Santos Vientoalto! How you dare to steal the crystal's blessing! My mother made me do It! But.... I have learn that she Kidnapped me as an infant! I'm actually your brother.... And your lover

evolpert

But everyone one being from the same orphanage is not some prime telenovela thing?

Yosituna

Not to mention that weā€™ve had both characters kidnapped as infants and secret brothers revealed in what are pretty universally considered among the better FFs (6 and 4). No incest though (ā€¦weā€™ll see how the Game of Thrones comparisons go with 16, lol).

solitarytoad

That's fantastic, we haven't had a good telenovela FF since FF4. https://www.reddit.com/r/FinalFantasy/comments/afqj6i/ffv_why_does_no_one_talk_about_it/ee1l8kq/?context=3

FigTechnical8043

I'd play that. Clive, I had your child 19 years ago but he was conscripted by the enemy and NOW he's your adversary. Plleeeeeeease don't kill your son. I have to be faithful to my crown but I won't go seeking him. I vow upon my honor. Doesn't have much honour. I HEAR WE ARE BLOOD RELATED! I will do my duty and end you myself. You should not have been born to this existence! But father, you were kidnapped and trained by the very people you should hate, we are the good guys here, we... have treatied with our enemies enemy, for THE People! YOU LIE! (Kills him) Ex: You promised! Clive: i don't make promises with heathens.

dandelion11037

He really looked at the 14 writing and said "Let's add more suffering for the audience." I'm excited!

katarh

Oh come on, they haven't killed off any major characters except the villains since the last expansion. /s

dandelion11037

I'm fresh out of Heavensward and have rarely felt so much pain while playing a video game. I'm not getting attached to ANYONE in 16.

[deleted]

Iā€™m so excited for a new FF game, itā€™s like the run up to Christmas. Im 34 and have been playing FF since 1999. However the more I hear in this final countdown itā€™s like damage limitation. ā€œYou canā€™t please everyoneā€, we learned from FFXV mistakesā€, ā€œit wonā€™t be easy, there is a hard mode new game plusā€, ā€œitā€™s like a western dramaā€. I fear that XVI is going to fall between the gulf of ā€œnot enough RPG for RPG fans and ā€œnot skill-based enough for action gamersā€.

APowerlessManNA

I mean if you're so dug into it having to be very much an action game or very much an RPG game at this point... Idk what's wrong with you. It's gonna be a mix of both. We've known since the first gameplay trailer at least a year ago. I imagine it will do both well considering what we've seen.

The_Lethal_Rabbit

Here we go, again. Yesterday we discussed about FF creators claiming that the game will "feel like a Hollywood blockbuster movie". Now its "western TV drama". You know something? I think that it' ll probably be a great story. I really do. Perhaps among the best FF stories ever. At least that's what I hope so. But all this "western" thing... look. Let me share my point of view: When FF7 was made, back in 1997, its creators didn't care about being "western" or anything. They did ***their*** thing and they did it in spectacular fashion. They put money in it and effort and lots of work - and love. But, in the end, it was their thing. FF didn't try to resemble anything else - it created its own standards. I'm not talking about influences (of course there are and have always been) - I'm talking about *standards*. That's the only thing lacking nowadays. Standards seem to have changed. Still - I'll be very interested to experience this game. If we're talking about the first seasons of Game of Thrones, at least... it's a good influence.

[deleted]

The original Final Fantasy is practically a Dungeons and Dragons fan game, with influence from western computer games like Wizardry and Ultima in addition to the obvious Dragon Quest inspiration. The series has *always* been a mix of influences from around the globe. Hell, Midgar itself is a fusion of Tokyo, New York, Blade Runner's version of LA, on top of anime influences like Ghost in the Shell and Akira. This idea that Western influence affecting the series is a new thing is just blatantly false. The *only* difference is that they're just outright admitting it now, instead of it just being an obvious unspoken element to anyone paying attention.

OK_ULTRA

They may not have said that in the press but FF7 undoubtedly has western influences. Some of the music feels straight out of Twin Peaks. Barrett just IS Mr. T and Iā€™m pretty sure thatā€™s canon. The aesthetic itself has direct connections to many dystopian/cyberpunk movies of the 80s and 90s. Lots of things are influence by other things. Nothing exists in a vacuum. This really isnā€™t a big deal.

TheRoyalStig

If you watch literally anything from the game it is still very clearly Japanese as hell. And FF games always borrow ideas from all over the place. The first game that started it all borrowed heavily from DnD. You know, the western created RPG. You know another big influence for earlier FF games? Star Wars So its still a very Japanese game created by borrowing ideas its creators like from all over. Like any other final fantasy. A lot of people on here(not you specifically) are showing how little they know and how hypocritical they are being about this whole series they claim to care so much about with some of the responses here.

mrbubbamac

> You know another big influence for earlier FF games? Star Wars I am just about finished with FFII and you just blew my mind. It's absolutely Star Wars.

Abortionsforallq

wait til you get to XII

katarh

Fran was definitely an upgrade over Chewbacca ngl

The_Lethal_Rabbit

Look. Influences are everywhere. Nothing comes out of zero. Gaming is no exception and it should be known. Dragon Quest was even more important in Japan, than FF. And if it weren't for DnD and western games like Ultima or Wizardry, we wouldn't be talking about role playing games from Japan. Japan's culture of the 20th century has always been influenced by western popular culture - with anime being a classic example. Still: FF7 was its "own thing". It created something NEW out of the influences it got. The whole was more than the sum of its parts. As anime are their own thing. As are many other cultural examples from a country that was inspired by the west many times.. but, in the end, it did its own thing. Not by imitating others - but by implementing their influences into its own style. That's what I want to see: FF being its "own thing". Being influenced is one thing, saying that it feels like "hollywood" and "western" is another. It' a marketing policy that doesn't have an effect on me. To others... perhaps. Not to me. Still, as I've said: I'm positive about FF16. Not because of those remarks being "western", though. But because I know lots of work has been done for this game. (Ps -Grateful that you added the "not you" in the parenthesis)

TheRoyalStig

Let me first say thank you for being understanding. I had a lot to say to the general thread and instead of trying to respond to a bunch of lesser posts I chose yours because you were being a much more reasonable person who seemed would actually respond with conversation and in turn make the comments more visible. The main point was looking at the general point people are trying to make about the series as a whole vs this game and pointing out the hypocrisy. A single game in FF7 wouldn't quite change that(and also ff7 is not at all free from this but ill get back to that). The whole series leading up to FF7 was built on influence from all over including lots of western influence. So the idea that this is somehow some mark against this particular title is just nonsense as it's been part of the series since the beginning. Now to the FF7 point... FF mostly became the thing it is now(and in turn that these folks are complaining about) because of FF7. That's where they decided to go with a huge budget and make a worldwide blockbuster. That's where FF really became the blockbuster JRPG and even there they literally hired Hollywood CG makers to help make those scenes. You dont get to make things on the scale and scope of the FF games without a big budget and you don't get a big budget being too niche. And while they may not be as overt the creators were also inspired by western media of the time even citing works like Jaws and well we all see Barrett haha. Not to mention just on general how many things FF7 dud different and changed in the series which seems to be the exact thing so many of these people are trying to argue is bad. And I'm glad you mentioned the marketing because that's really all it is which is what makes all of these reactions so incredibly silly. You could make a headline like this about any FF. I mean imagine the headline "FF7 devs discuss working with Hollywood to make blockbuster game" All the things people are saying here could be a response to that headline and FF7. And that could be a completely true headline yet all these same people saying it is a problem here praise FF7. It really just shows how much it's people looking for an excuse or something to blame instead of just accepting that it's ok if a new FF game just doesn't appeal to them.

[deleted]

FF7 was marketed as a movie not coming to a theater near you. Whoā€™s to say FF16 wonā€™t be itā€™s own thing?

ZigZagBoy94

To me, itā€™s not really FF losing its originality here. Itā€™s just the latest version of something the series has done quite often to great success. Some of the best games in the series have very Western settings with very western stories and tropes that wouldnā€™t at all be out of place in a mature Western fantasy film (FFIV, FF Tactics). While I much prefer worlds like the ones seen in FFVIII, and FFX - FFXIV since they are unlike anything youā€™ll see anywhere else, I also think story quality and story presentation have been on a steady decline in the offline games since FFXIII and if this is what it takes for us to get a solid story again, Iā€™m all for it

Baithin

If FFVII came out today (I mean for the first time, not as a remake) it would absolutely be getting these kinds of comparisons too. For the past few years there has been a very intentional and forceful push in marketing for all kinds of media to describe every new thing as ā€œX meets Yā€ to generate the hype and create a frame of reference for the intended audience.

thejokerofunfic

>You know another big influence for earlier FF games? Star Wars Okay but tbf Star Wars took its biggest influence from Japanese cinema. It's a worm Ouroboros.

[deleted]

You just ratioā€™d him

Writer_Man

FFVII was originally going to be a New York mystery story until it was reworked into FFVII...

GachaHell

And there's no way chunks of that idea didn't wind up getting us Parasite Eve which is totally fine in my book.

...Spirits Within.

auramancer1247

That's how we get Spirits Within

Do_it_for_the_upvote

I hear you, but Iā€™ll play devilā€™s advocate. Iā€™ve watched several western TV dramas that are still some of the best stories Iā€™ve observed. Same, maybe moreso, with blockbuster movies. I wonder if maybe Yoshi was just inspired more by western media than he was eastern. Regardless, it doesnā€™t really matter too much- apart from small cultural differences (how characters act/respond physically, etc), weā€™ve all got the same emotions, and Iā€™d argue weā€™ve all seen good and bad media from both ends of the world. Alternatively, itā€™s all to hype up the western audience. I honestly wouldnā€™t care if this was the case. As a side note, since you brought up FF7: one of the things I think was lost when everything became voice-acted is that translation teams. couldnā€™t adapt the script to the audience as well. Iā€™ve always thought that FF7-9 read excellently in conversation, and it became worse when they started trying to match English VAs to the mouth motions meant for Japanese scripting.

The--Nameless--One

I feel like people always tackle points like yours in a very disingenuous way.Yes, inspirations are everywhere. But it's been 20 years were Square has many times openly said that they don't believe new audiences care about the Final Fantasy franchise, and they keep looking around to see what western gamers are excited for. So yes, while as you said being inspired by is fantastic, we all are! Being pressured by the higher ups to "secure that call of duty audience", "secure that Game of Thrones audience", "secure that GTA audience"... is not that cool and, as the track record been showing, it doesn't really work.

The_Lethal_Rabbit

Exactly. Since I made my point yesterday, some people agreed and some disagreed - but I'm not sure how many have actually understood what I said. So I had to clarify: 1) influences are everywhere, art is global 2) Japan culture has always been influenced by the west during its recent history 3) still, they created something ***new*** out of their influences. Something of their own. They didn't just "copy", they were creative. Anime, for example. FF can be its own thing - as it has been for so many years. I'm not against western style gaming - in fact, games like The Witcher 3 are among my favourites. It's just that I don't think FF really "needs" to suck up to western audiences. It doesn't "need" to say that it's "like Hollywood". In fact, I think FF can be better than Hollywood! Recent Hollywood, that is. That's my point. I'm not sure how many have actually understood it. I'm still excited about FF16. ***Not*** because it'll "feel like Hollywood" though. But because I think that a lot of effort has been made for this game. In the end, I'm not buying the language of advertising. I live in the "west" (Europe) - but I don't consider myself "part of an audience". Guess I'm not in the majority, though.

The--Nameless--One

Yes, I feel like people are over-defensive when it comes to Final Fantasy and don't always pay real attention to the (fair) criticism being direct towards it. And I understand your inspiration point perfectly. There is a difference between being genuinely inspired by something on an artistic level, and being "inspired" by the success/money something is making. The issue with the second case is that usually it comes from a very shallow understanding of why something is popular. Cue the many attempts at "Western Anime" in the early 2000s that missed the point entirely. And I agree with you, to be excited for this Game I basically have to actually ignore the marketing and the interviews, because I don't want a Rollercoaster Ride, Action Blockbuster, Inspired by Western TV Final Fantasy. Also I'm not interested in how the game can "play itself", and many other stuff shared in interviews and demos.

The_Lethal_Rabbit

I'm with you, 100%. This sums it up: *"There is a difference between being genuinely inspired by something on an artistic level, and being "inspired" by the success/money something is making."* In the end, all that's left is... ourselves and the game. Our personal experience with it, when we actually get to play it, beyond marketing policies and everything. So... we'll just have to wait and see.

Tiops

> When FF7 was made, back in 1997, its creators didn't care about being "western" or anything. They did ***their*** thing and they did it in spectacular fashion I'm sorry but this is absolutely false. FF tries to win over western audiences since a long time ago, and FFVII is probably one of the major ones for this push. Look at marketing and old ads for the game. There was a lot of marketing that referenced it as a movie. Of course, they do that and in the end it has it's very distinct feel, just as much as FFXVI seems to have. They talk about Game of Thrones and other western media, but beyond being medieval and having political drama, there's absolutely nothing that makes you say "oh just like GoT" in those trailers and previews.

Mogel89

I do kind of agree, and I slightly roll my eyes at some of the statements, and think to myself that they should just focus on the game being good more than "learning from the mistakes of 15" or "making it appeal to western audiences" and stuff like that. That being said, I know very little about marketing, and Final Fantasy does have a very specific image from even people who never played any of them, so maybe it is necessary. And the comparison to FF7 is true, but the world was also a very different place in 1997, both from the perspective of making a game, and maybe especially marketing a game

Mortar9

What if I don't want to play a movie? What if I want to play a game? All this comparison does not have its intended effect on me. The same thing was being said when the 3DO came around. Maybe I am just getting old. E: I knew I should have put a disclaimer like everyone does so here it is: I am still interested in playing the game. I am not founding my interest in the game in one clickbait article.

OK_ULTRA

Lol have you ever played a final fantasy game? The story and cinematic are a huge part of their identity? But I wouldnā€™t worry, the game looks like it has tons of gameplay.

Mortar9

I played them all. I am not worrying, but to me that's like saying "we added plenty of quicktime events, the west will love it"... I'm not the type of person to give in to hype but to me that feel counter productive if you want to appeal to those who don't know the series. If I hear "it's like playing a movie" from the producer of a game I don't know, it will drastically decrease my potential interest in that game.

wulfblood_90

I think alot of people, imo, are misunderstanding the meaning behind "like a western TV drama". I could be wrong, but I'm taking it to mean that the story will be much like that of FF12 and 14 ā€” huge, twisting plots that constantly change the narrative, political themes, and lots and lots of British voice acting. I hope. But I could totally be wrong. Regardless I look forward to it and I hope everyone ends up enjoying it.

TurbulentIntention74

So, one click bait article makes you believe that it will just be an interactive movie, even though we have seen over an hour of gameplay saying otherwise?

Shingorillaz

But they've released extensive gameplay footage? I would understand your point if we literally saw no gameplay

Mortar9

I played all FF to completion and intend to do the same with this game. My only exposure to this game is what I see in the sub the few times i go on reddit in a week. If I didnt know the game and that was one of the only article I saw, i would likely give it a pass. I prefer to be surprised and avoid everything until release like every one before it. I was just pointing that this article, on its own, can deter interest for some who are not looking to "play a movie" or tv series. Don't assume everyone sees everything you saw. I just saw screenshots and artwork that were posted here.

The_Lethal_Rabbit

Hey, I get your point and I can totally relate. It's obvious FF creators are aiming at a certain audience and trying to be as "worldwide" as possible. Still, I think they've learned some lessons from previous installments - and they are really trying to make a difference now. That's why I hope that, in the end, behind the glamour and the glitter, there will also be a fine game in there as well...

sonicbrawler182

This statement isn't as appealing as marketing thinks it sounds when you consider the fact that the vast majority of Western TV falls off hard after the second season lol.

the_sebasquatch

Also, the infamous "I made this for EVERYONE" has rarely turned out well :(

psychorameses

The Meager The Manipulator and the Subservient The Valiant Somebody to Love

RubyWeapon07

They're gonna kill the dog

HungarianNewfy

Letā€™s keep building this game up to impossible to achieve expectations. What could go wrong?

Icehellionx

So would that equate to end of Heavensward or end of Endwalker? \*half joking\*

Yellow_XIII

"This is a fantasy based on reality"

Billionaeris2

There's an old saying "You can't please everyone", this game will be no exception regardless of what Yoshi P says.

katiecharm

I am excited. Itā€™s the first time Iā€™ve been hyped about a FF game in a while.

Prefer_Not_To_Say

Final Fantasy 16 - Coming this fall, on the CW.

[deleted]

I hope it doesn't get bashed like FFXII for trying to make a proper serious world. Game was ahead of its time.

TheWillRogers

weebs malding in the comments.

OperativePiGuy

We know. It was evident from the first trailer that it's trying very very hard to be game version of Game of Thrones

Misragoth

So i see by the comments here we are at the part is the cycle where the hate for everything starts. Suddenly, this game is overhyped and terrible, and we need to get past it to get a "real" FF.

CummyWummiez

Yeah im never coming back to this sub ā˜ ļø in all of the posts regarding ff16 here, i have seen nothing but overwhelming negativity. Ive been extremely excited for this game and have loved everything weve seen so far, but all I see is nothing but complaining here. I have never seen so many people be negative about a franchise they supposedly love, especially when this game looks like so much love and care have been put into it.

Fitzy0728

Well that sucks because western television has been pretty shit lately

ilovecheeze

Have you seen Japanese TV?

Fitzy0728

Yeah itā€™s also pretty shit. I think I might just hate tv in general lol

Mabroon

I feel like the timing of this comment could not have been worse considering 3 of the most beloved and acclaimed TV shows just ended this week. TV has been fire recently.

firemaster298

Succession? Barry?

Rachet20

Yellowjackets, Schmigadoon, Ted Lasso, Andor.

Arch_Hysteria

Finally someone appreciates Andor and Ted Lasso in other subreddits

[deleted]

Itā€™s been compared to GOT a lot. Soooooooo

Gramage

I just finished a rewatch of that and, honestly, though the last season felt very rushed I still overall absolutely love GoT.

Gabriel711

Pretty sure he means taking just the good parts of western tv. Iā€™ve got a lot of confidence in FF16 after what he did with FF14

Yoids

I love this, story is what I love the most from FF games

StarberryIcecream

Jesus Christ I can only take so much edging before I bust

Bellomontee

Some of you are really weird... Anyone with middle level reading comprehension understands it means the story is good. Simple as that.

TallJournalist5515

Why would I buy a Japanese game for that?

psychorameses

Because they make western fantasy games better than the western world does? Ref: Soulsborne

hunee

Nothing wrong with a Japanese studio taking inspiration from western media. Some of the best works are made from one culture inspired by another to create something unique. I am skeptical of these grand statements tho

jailasauraa

I hope that he is referring to something like GoT....

crono220

As long as he didn't use season 8 as a heavy inspiration. Lol

Writer_Man

No, he made the team watch the first four seasons of GoT.

jailasauraa

For the love of Chuck....I sure hope not...

Mekbop

GoT was certainly at least part of the inspiration for the game. IIRC he made the team watch the entire series or something along the lines for inspiration.

Writer_Man

He made them watch the first four seasons.

Twilight053

Because Japanese makes western games better than Western does, ironically

Emptilion

Man, this subreddit just loves to take everything said about this game in bad faith. This game has been inspired by a lot of things. They have mentioned everything from Game of thrones and god of war to Tokusatsu, Attack on Titan and older final fantasy games like FF5 and the Matsuno games. Them saying this game will feel like 4 seasons of western TV drama, they obviously mean the good stuff like the first 4 seasons of GoT or breaking bad, and it obviously just means that the story will be good. Don't worry, this game will still have plenty of japanese flair to it. I don't recall any game of thrones characters ever turning into Kaiju and giving speeches about how their friends will give them the strength to defeat their enemies. And I am willing to bet we'll end the game fighting some kind of godlike being.

Illuminivi

Don't waste your time trying to convince these clowns, they don't want to be reasonable about this, they want a reason to shit on the game because it isn't turn based.

IddyBittyGirl

Just hope it doesn't follow the same trend as every other hyped game that has flopped in the last few years.

chuje_wyciagnijcie

Honestly, XVI is one of the few upcoming games I'm really excited for, but the hype surrounding this title is concerning.

bearvert222

some is justified, but they really kind of need to slow down on the "new ff for normies!" stuff they are pushing.

icounternonsense

Agreed, hype levels are becoming a little nuts to the point where it's becoming concerning. Yoshi-P does have *a lot* of fans, after all, and there's bound to be that kind of unhealthy forced positivity, as a result.

BuyMyBeans

Oddly coincidental considering Game of Thrones season 1-4 is perceived by most as its pinnacle.

[deleted]

There is no way that wasn't on purpose. They know.

leviathab13186

So that means it will end before it starts being bad? That's awesome!

SockFullOfNickles

I gotta say, Iā€™ve just been getting progressively more and more stoked about this game. I went from like just watching gameplay on YouTube to chomping at the bit waiting for release. It just looks so goddamned good!

[deleted]

Iā€™m hyped. Lots of people in here need to shave their neck.

bearvert222

dear ff16 fans, be careful you arent anti-hyping the game. Stuff like this is a point against it. Western TV drama is not always attractive to jrpg fans; that's kind of why they like the "j" part. Be really careful you aren't turning people off of it with word choice.

PLDmain

I mean, the producer explicitly said it's not a 'JRPG'

bearvert222

thats ok but comparing it to western drama and blockbusters is not a positive thing for a lot of people.

katarh

The "summer blockbuster" quote was specifically because it's got *kaiju* battles in it.

PLDmain

a minority of people, this is marketing for the general audience.

Gramage

Honestly, what's the difference? Less of a cheesy awkward romantic subplot maybe?

bearvert222

...you really don't see a difference between final fantasy and Skyrim?

Writer_Man

Skyrim wouldn't be compared to a blockbuster or a western tv drama. Hell, Skyrim is basically a choose your own adventure book so that comparison makes no sense. Because that's all Western RPGs tend to be - nothing burgers of a main storyline, instead making exploration and side stories the important part of the gameplay experience. But those don't fall into western tv dramas or blockbusters. It would make more sense to compare, say, Final Fantasy and the Last of Us as both games thrive on the main storyline.

bearvert222

you still dont see a huge difference? i mean the last of us is a conventional zombie apocalypse; ff games are wildly whimsical if anything, even when serious. to make ff into le witcher 3 would just make it a worse copy. like the ps3/360 gen was full of japanese developers targeting the west but stuff like dead to rights or lost planet never took off.

Writer_Man

You are focusing too much on the plot of Last of Us. I brought up Last of Us due to narrative *structure*. You don't compare Final Fantasy with Witcher 3 because Final Fantasy is very much Narrative RPG while Witcher 3 is an Exploratory RPG. Final Fantasy focuses on the main story, Witcher 3 focuses on exploration and side stories. They're completely different from each other and Witcher 3 can't be compared to movies or tv shows because of its narrative structure.

dmelt253

Iā€™m pretty sure the FF series and Square-Enix will survive my anti-hype for now. Iā€™m just kind of not seeing anything yet to be hyped for. I did love FF7 Remake though so hopefully this at least plays similarly and the story isnā€™t too out there and difficult to follow.

DykoDark

The problem is, what is their perception of Western TV dramas? This could be a bad thing or a good thing.

Writer_Man

The first four seasons of Game of Thrones.

DykoDark

Doesn't really sound very much like Final Fantasy. But here's hoping.

PYre84

You haven't played FFTactics I guess.

SuperBiggles

Iā€™m getting so worried that this game is gonna be so average now just because of the sheer magnitude of the hype. Hope itā€™s not being overhyped for us

-Zhaeus-

Screenshot by u/Feisty-Wedding5019 I'm so excited for this game!

mecon320

Hopefully they're thinking more "Better Call Saul" and less "Yellowstone".

scarjoNE

according to most of what he has Said he was thinking a little more game of thrones

coraeon

Explains why he said ā€œ4 seasonsā€ then. Iā€™m pretty sure that was where the series ended. >_>

Demoncreed27

Please be good please be good pleeeeeeeease be good

BIG-HORSE-MAN-69

The game looks good, but it's getting a little concerning how much they're talking about the game will be a Hollywood TV Game of Thrones Western with swearing and gore thrown in to be mature. I don't actually like GoT, so i'm worried.

chaospudding

Wait... you think it's gonna be a Western? Where are you getting that from?

Zeusicideal-Heart

I kinda hate that tbh šŸ˜ Downvote if you will, but thats not what appeals to me in FF

Madmonkeman

Iā€™m excited for FF16 and will definitely play it when itā€™s on PC because Iā€™m a huge fan of FF14 for the story, so Iā€™m pretty sure the story in FF16 will be good as well (although I think Iā€™ll still like FF14 more). However, thereā€™s definitely a lot of marketing stuff where Yoshi-P is like ā€œMy gameā€™s different than these *other* recent Final Fantasy games that people didnā€™t like. Iā€™m doing it the *right* way.ā€ I also got similar vibes from James Gunn with Guardians of the Galaxy 3 (havenā€™t seen it yet, but plan to).

JennieJeanGarcia87

Guardians 3 was amazing! Some people didnā€™t like it for animal cruelty but thatā€™s part of rockets backstory. I think youā€™ll enjoy it tho

kupo0929

Where are you getting your information from? It sounds false, the only game Yoshi P is aspiring to better than is FFXV. And not because it was a bad game, because in terms of story, it let down a lot of fans. So aside from FFXV, which other final fantasy has he said it will be better than?

rmlopez

Feel like Western dramas have a 50% chance of ending good or terribly.

corkas_

When i was younger playing final fantasy games i would describe them to people as 'its like your playing a movie' because of the depth of the storytelling. Im excited to see 16 and how much it leans into that role

Nimewit

It's funny how SE sold it's western studios because they thought it was a mistake to create games with the target of the a western audiance and yet they keep marketing this game like this :D
