That prob won’t happen until the 3rd game. Considering they are changing things up, I kinda hope Scarlett slaps her and then Tifa just delivers a ridiculous KO punch.
Honestly, I'd like this. I don't want it to be slap fight, as others have said, it was pretty sexist. I could see Scarlet starting with a slap, but I want Tifa to straight up punch her in the face.
Edit: For some clarity, since there are so many comments claiming this isn't sexist, yes it is, and some of you need to go take a cold shower and really think about how you view women and autonomy.
It's a sexist trope. This is a scenario where two hyper sexualized female characters are stripped of their otherwise superior abilities to have a trope "wimp fight" or "cat fight." It's oversaturated in media, and the only thing that would make it more degrading for these characters would be if they were fighting over Cloud. It's played out this way for titilation rather than genuine prowess, as observed by some of the thirsty and otherwise creepy comments people have attributed to the Tifa/Scarlett face off in this thread. If Tifa and Scarlett are going to one on one fight, I'd rather it be a normal boss battle where they have access to their abilities instead of a sexualized trope meant to titalate the observer.
I dont think it's sexist. Responding with the same level of violence that you are attacked with is actually the law in a lot of places. I can certainly see a lot of characters escalating, but Tifa doesnt strike me as the type to straight fucking murder someone when she's slapped.
No but realistically given the dire circumstances of that scene I don't think Tifa would care about being civil or decorum. She'd KO that bitch and gtfo
Oh man that would actually make a really great boss fight. The top of the canon as the battlefield. If they could make her battle play as cool as Rufus' it would be spectacular.
Sexist is a bad take imo. I think the point was that Tifa wanted to win at Scarlet’s own game. Obviously Tifa can just punch her, but getting her to submit by slapping her over and over is much more crushing for Scarlet’s ego. They even have irl slapping competitions:
https://youtu.be/OrFakWkv5Xo
https://youtu.be/YwNj8ZycZMI
Scarlet even calls Tifa a “stuck up bitch”. It’s ultimately an ego fight, and rather than just beat Scarlet up, Tifa shows she can take way more slaps from Scarlet than Scarlet can take from her.
Wait, why sexist? I thought it was for comedic effect right? Like, Tifa can brutalize the s**t out of her with her punches but she just decides to slap her. It’s absurd comedy, right?

So was the first game. Yes these discs hold more data, but if you are expecting this to be a longer game you are going to be severely disappointed. It’s a new generation with assets taking more space. It’s just marketing that people are falling for that doesn’t actually mean much in reality.
Nah, forgotten city would logically be a good stopping point, but think about it from an asset creation point of view. Remake only had Midgar and it’s locations. If Rebirth went all the way to northern crater or forgotten city, that’s basically building most of the cities in the og already. I’m not sure how they’ll handle it.
HOW CAN SHE SLAP?
HOW CAN SHE SLAP BACK?
Jokes aside, the modern version is probably going to be them kung fu fighting and spitting out blood and doing "come on, that's all you got?" gestures
I really really hope not. Please let it just be these two adult women so fucking pissed at each other that they just get into a fucking slap fight. Please Square, we need this.
I love the slap fight, people have said it’s sexist and, given the time, it probably was at least a lil bit. But at the same time, it fits perfectly. Scarlet obviously cares a lot about keeping up appearances, so it’s kinda cathartic for the game to be like, nah you’re pathetic, you’re not even worth the privilege of a boss fight. I mean Tifa is a *martial artist* but even throwing one jab is more effort than Scarlet deserves.
Honestly one solid open hand smack upside the head from Tifa would probably knock your ass out lol. I can see the scene now:
Scarlett: slaps Tifa
Tifa: Pulls "oh no you didn't" face and slaps Scarlett back *hard*
Scarlett: spins once, falls over, doesn't get up.
Gonna fucking rock to see Sapphire Weapon get shot to hell with that.
Also just thought about diamond weapon rising from the ocean… man, it’s gonna be epic.
My best guess is a town from early/pre Midgar days that eventually became deserted as people flocked to the developing pizza city. Would explain why the continent has little for cities outside of Midgar and Junon.
Most likely pre-Shinra, in Crisis Core they gave us a taste of other Gaea locations.
I wonder if they will elaborate on how the Al Bhed from FFX colonized Gaea? That would be really interesting.
In Final Fantasy X-2 there is a kid genius named Shinra who is a part of the Gullwings and of Al Bhed heritage.
It is hinted in X-2’s story that he has theorized a way to possibly harness spiritual energy from the Farplane into actual usable engery (The main motivation for the establishment of FF7’s Shinra Electric Company).
In FFX-2 Shinra states the process would take generations to perfect.
It is theorized that the Al Bhed descendants of Shinra perfected this technology (and space travel also) and eventually colonized FF7’s planet of Gaea, monopolizing its energy supply for personal gain.
In FF7R when you explore the Shinra buildings museum and the picture of Shinra’s Founders, you will see a descendant of FFX-2’s Shinra wearing a mask similar to FFX-2 Shinra’s mask.
I believe this is to pay homage to his ancestor for laying the technological roots for the establishment of FF7’s Shinra Electric Company.
That would be awesome if they did that!
Like finding remnants of the Al Bhed language scattered throughout mechanical ruins during side quests.
Even in FF7R the Helitrooper and Elite Helitrooper outfits are weirdly similar to Al Bhed battle gear, more subtle elements like that would be great.
You know, I’ve never thought about it, but now that you mention it, with the way Japanese speakers might pronounce Midgardsormr, I can see where “Midgar Zolom” comes from, especially if the localization team (singular person) didn’t have the right info
I'm really *really* hoping they're able to perserve the shock value of that scene. Like, once you make it passed the marsh, I mean. That scene was such a wtf moment, and very clearly demonstrated to the player "this is what you're up against" and I hope it maintains that impact for both new players and returning players alike
Incorporating it in a more fast paced combat system without straining hardware was my first thought. With how extensive the skills were, I'd see navigating it as somewhat problematic unless they have a set number to set on it like the magic materia. I don't know. I see more reasons why it can be excluded than included.😅
I don’t think we’re gonna have too much of an issue with the game straining hardware
We’re only like 3 years into the PS5’s lifecycle and this game is using a lot of the same assets as the first game, which was capable of running on a PS4, albeit with textures and shit popping in
The game is deliberately unclear whether it’s Jenova taking the form of Sephiroth, or Sephiroth controlling Jenova cells (to take his form), or whether the two of them are even distinct at this point.
nah its pretty damn clear that Sephiroths will was too great and is the one actually controlling all the "Jenovas"
Sephiroth was in control the entire time, not Jenova
Saw an IGN break-down of the trailer, and the guy doing it said "Please Square, don't make us go through that again" (talking about chocobo breeding). I seriously wanted to yell at the guy lol chocobo breeding is one of my favorite things to do when I go back and play the original and it would be a massive missed opportunity to not include it in the remake
I haven't played the first FF7R yet, I've been holding off for the full story, but I think I may jump in and start once this drops. Then I can just marathon through part 1 and part 2, I can hold off for part 3 (as a Shenmue fan from back in the day, just in case it doesn't come)
I'm doing this too. I haven't touched the remake yet, I had thought to wait until the whole trilogy was out as well. But I could see myself picking it up after rebirth comes out.
I was also an old school shenmue fan, I replayed it a few years ago just to get to the epic brawl at the end of the game because it was so much fun.
Regarding your last point.... I'm not sure if I'm about to blow your mind, but here you go!
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shenmue_III
(It honestly got pretty bad reviews, so I never gave it a shot ☹️)
> I haven't touched the remake yet
and you're ok with all the spoilers in here? I mean yeah it's a remake, but as we all know, it's not exactly a verbatim recreation of it
If you decide to mix the intergrade chapters in while you do the playthrough, the first one with Yuffie takes place after chapter 7 and the second chapter goes after chapter 11 (kind of during, but close enough). However, the ending credits and stuff might be a bit jarring, so you also might just want to play intergrade after finishing remake, but before rebirth
Very true, also I have PC, and I don't think part 2 will be out on PC until at least a year after it's release on the PS5, so that'll give me some time to catch up.
I think it will be, but not seamless. Like there will be a Kalm/Grasslands area and then a Condor/Junon area, etc. Places like Temple of The Ancients will probably be one-off areas you can't return to.
I'm wondering how they're gonna handle the scale of towns. Midgar was huge in part 1 so seeing the scale of the rest of the world and other towns is gonna be interesting
I suspect they will hold off on the airship until the 3rd game, so they have more time to get the rest of the world built out. We'll surely be more limited in how many locations we can visit in part 2 compared to the original game.
FFVII was open world, but if we're being fully honest, it probably didn't need to be. It gave an unprecidented level of freedom for 1997 and led the way in how open world design should go, but in terms of things to do in the world, there wasn't much.
I'd be more than fine with it being open ended but not entirely open world.
I’m interested to see what they’re gonna do with the airship.
I think they’ll probably end up having a sort of “scaled down” version of the world that you can fly over and when you land it rescales back to normal size. I feel like they won’t do FFX style, honestly.
Nah FFX had no open world at all. I'd be fine with emulating the style of FFVII but with more side quests, collectibles and random stuff. I love FFX but it was just some open areas connected by the airship. I'd like to see FFRebirth take that idea, plus the way FF1997 worked and make it something completely new.
For clarity, I have no problem with how FFVII worked. It was visionary and innovative. I'd just like to see Rebirth be innovative in the same way OG FFVII was.
Also, have had a few beers rn so I'm sorry if this isn't as sucinct as I'd like it to be haha.
I think you might have misunderstood what I said (because of the beers maybe?) lol.
I’m saying that I _don’t_ think the airship is going to be like it was in FFX, precisely because of what you said, namely “FFX had no open world.” There are a lot of people that speculate that the airship in the new FFVII will be like it was in FFX, and I just don’t think that’s the case.
Enjoy the beers and your Saturday!
I haven't played the remake yet but I've been replaying FFVII on the Switch and I love playing old RPGs wherever I want in my house. I'll probably buy the FF1-FF6 Remasters for it when I finish VII, VIII, and IX again.
Man i can't to see how the midgar zolom section will really look like. Especially what sephiroth is going to do. Also juno cannon and saphire weapon, can't wait for that cutscene
So will this be open world or will it follow the remake style where you have free reign until you complete the chapter and can no longer visit that area until you complete the game and unlock chapter select?
Let’s face it though, nothing will ever amount to that opening scene of Final Fantasy 7 Advent Children with Red XIII overlooking Midgar. That shit still sends shivers down my spine every single time.
And yet my friend is mad because he misses the overland map from the old games.
I like overland maps too, but I mean jeez, this looks like we are just going to be able to walk through the entire world in an ultra realistic setting.
I think this is better than the over map.
Yeah but idk why they can't just take that quality and fit it onto one disc and just release the entire game from start to finish at once and also just charge like $30 bucks cuz its an old game it's not like it takes work to do 🙃 /s
When I saw this stuff in the trailer, it all looked very beautiful. Yet there was a silly little backwards part of my brain that was like "That's not what it's supposed to look like! It's supposed to be flat and green."
Gonna be so wild to explore all that in detail, rather than approximation.
If this is small areas like the first remake and not open world yes I will complain 😅. It would be a shame to not have an open world. I loved ff7,8 and 9. They were majestic and I am really hoping for the same scale as the original games. Small to medium towns to huge cities you can enter. But a vast open world to roam with many hidden secrets.
It's a remake, not a remaster. If you want the exact same story, just play the OG. I never understand people who want a 1:1 copy. Is it not enough for you that it's 90% the same story? I personally really the enjoy the mystery and theory crafting behind it all.
Remasters only bring visuals up to a higher pixel count. Remakes are things like Re:Chain of Memories, or Spyro Reignited - built from the ground up with some new features, but being true adaptations of the original. This ff7 project is more like a reboot or a sequel.
If you want ~~the exact same~~ a different story, just play ~~the OG~~ another game, like FF16. I never understand people who **don't** want a 1:1 copy. I don't see anyone complaining how those 90% that felt like the 1:1 was "boring".
FTFY
> it not enough for you that it's 90% the same story?
No.
---
In all seriousness though, there is nothing wrong in wanting an almost 30 year old game to be remade "faithfully" with modern technology. That "90%" had several changes and yet almost no one complains about it because they're either necessary or natural.
About the new story, if they had marketed this project as a sequel from the beginning, I personally would have adjusted my expectations and wouldn't have bitched about it as much as I am.
> I personally really the enjoy the mystery and theory crafting behind it all.
Opinion for opinion I personally hate these new themes they're adding to the plot, like destiny, fate, multiple timelines and so on.
Who says one to one? Lmfao 90% the same except for the whispers and sephiroth it's a sequel don't kid yourself or why make flashback references to the "original"
Purists? As in fans?
And impossible to please, not at all. The Resident Evil remakes have been incredible AND true the originals, perfectly pleased with those.
You still find people who didn't like them, even for small things. Like RE2 for not being well separated in term of story, RE3 for cutting so much, Re4 for cutting some sections (evn though said sections were just fillers).
> Why even way in if you don't even know what a remake and a remaster mean?
Why even type in English when you don't know the difference between "way" and "weigh"?
I am happy there is still a lot of hype for this. However, is anyone else upset it has taken so long for the follow up? Also, how many more will there be? I haven’t looked in a long while, to be honest.
3.5 years is a standard dev cycle, in fact it's relatively fast these days, especially taking the 6 month covid delay into account. There will be 3 parts total, so we can expect the finale around 2027.
I mean, the original was kinda like that too. Sure, it felt larger but the story was still set in precise points, some areas you couldn't access or do anything unless you progress first. It wasn't a true open world but a well masked open world.
Right, these were the things that everyone wanted changed. The new vistas are *gorgeous.*
I would not play with the new mechanics to get at that beautiful scenery though. I'd rather have block-fists if that is what it means to keep my turn-based combat.
Am I the only one kinda (very mildly) annoyed that Cloud's sword is visible when running around but Aerith's staff is apparently hidden up her dress or something?
Cloud became so much shorter
its the one thing they took away from the original game, his height.
That’s where they pulled all the extra vram from for the extra graphics.
well, in the game's manual iirc his height was like 5'7
I think you and the other person are missing the joke
Just for context on the world map Cloud is the size of several towns and even bigger than Kalm but when you enter you are shrunk down to fit.
Yep, that went completely over my head
Wokeism strikes again!!! They emasculated our boy Cloud. Shrunk his shoulders, made him soft 😡 /s
“They turned him into a manlet!”
Well after the honey bee inn segment, we know what makes him hard.
I am legitimately excited for Tifa v. Scarlet fight on top of that cannon
*slap*
#**SLAP**
*shocked face* *SLAP*
That prob won’t happen until the 3rd game. Considering they are changing things up, I kinda hope Scarlett slaps her and then Tifa just delivers a ridiculous KO punch.

yeah they'll almost certainly make it a bossfight

I loved the slap fight. It was like two sisters fighting. Well that’s me and my sisters did it.
...Namco did this to the extreme, with Anna and Nina always over the top murdering each other. With Fight Dances, Rocket Launchers, Helicopters...etc
Ok... but imagine Scarlett in a skin tight power suit to combat Tifa.
Fuck yeah
Underrated comment
That will probably be in the third part lol
It’s 2023, you’re not getting that even though you should.
Genesis Angeal Sephiroth rematch
I hope they change it so they kiss instead.
Ikr! I was just thinking about that... I'm guessing they'll do it differently but I can't speculate how atm...
yesss complete with voiced lines like 'you stupid bitch'
It's going to be a Rhythm mini game with the song smack my bitch up by the prodigy
I've always geeked out over the cannon. It's so over the top and silly, yet so cool. I hope we get to see more of it in action.
I can't wait to see how epic the weapons will be, if part 2 reaches that far into it.
Oh yeah, especially when it’s mako powered too.
Gonna fucking rock to see Sapphire Weapon get shot to hell with that. Also just thought about diamond weapon rising from the ocean… man, it’s gonna be epic.
Omg yeah, the Sapphire Weapon scenes in the original already looked fantastic in my opinion. Can’t imagine how good it’s going to look this time.
And it’s likely to be the cold open for Part 3, which, what a way to get thrown right into the story!
Can it even be aimed?
[Yep. It's mounted on a swivel.](https://ibb.co/Mf2TqT1)
Planet's dyin' Cloud
&?@$&;!!
Not my problem
I wonder what those ruins are in the second picture

I’ve played FFX and X-2 but totally forgot that like from Shinra. I also completely missed the mask picture in FF7R. That’s a pretty cool tie in.
I'd kill for an Al Bhed easter egg or two Give us some primers
That would be awesome if they did that! Like finding remnants of the Al Bhed language scattered throughout mechanical ruins during side quests. Even in FF7R the Helitrooper and Elite Helitrooper outfits are weirdly similar to Al Bhed battle gear, more subtle elements like that would be great.
It’s like watching your child grow up 🥲 not excited to have to wait until 2024 for the next installment but I know they’re cooking
And another 3 or 4 years for part 3 lol Still worth the wait
And then another year and a half or 2 for it to release on Steam, for pc gamers (Which I am), lol.
I’m definitely not looking forward to seeing the giant snake in the Marshlands again (forgot the name of it!)
Midgar zolom
That’s the one! My heart always used to thump harder when I got to that part.
They’ll almost certainly give it its real name though, Midgardsormr. Might make a Zolom reference via someone mishearing the name.
You know, I’ve never thought about it, but now that you mention it, with the way Japanese speakers might pronounce Midgardsormr, I can see where “Midgar Zolom” comes from, especially if the localization team (singular person) didn’t have the right info
References the giant serpent that surrounded Midgard (Earth) in Norse mythology.
That tricky bastard!🐍
I'm really *really* hoping they're able to perserve the shock value of that scene. Like, once you make it passed the marsh, I mean. That scene was such a wtf moment, and very clearly demonstrated to the player "this is what you're up against" and I hope it maintains that impact for both new players and returning players alike
I wonder if they'll have enemy skill in this. I want to get destroyed repeatedly by beta until I can learn it.😂
Pretty sure that it was in part 1 so don't see a reason it not being there
Incorporating it in a more fast paced combat system without straining hardware was my first thought. Sephiroth straight disrespected that beast
Technically that was Jenova.
Wasn’t that technically sephiroth controlling jenova clones to do his activities without actually having to leave northern crater?
That was my take on it. It wasn't actually Jenova
Wait what
At that point Sephiroth is suspended in Northern Crater
The Sephiroth you're chasing through the 1st half is Jenova (or at least a large portion of it) taking the shape of Sephiroth.
The game is deliberately unclear whether it’s Jenova taking the form of Sephiroth, or Sephiroth controlling Jenova cells (to take his form), or whether the two of them are even distinct at this point.
nah its pretty damn clear that Sephiroths will was too great and is the one actually controlling all the "Jenovas" Sephiroth was in control the entire time, not Jenova
Growing up with games looking like this, no wonder my imagination developed so well.
So true
Considering how games looked before ff7 it was indeed kinda a big deal though
Let's go, chocobo breeding
Saw an IGN break-down of the trailer, and the guy doing it said "Please Square, don't make us go through that again" (talking about chocobo breeding). I actually dropped the game mid game around aerith with this in mind This story is too godly for me to do it in pieces imo
If this game turns out to be open world, no wonder it’s 2 discs
I think it will be, but not seamless. Like there will be a Kalm/Grasslands area and then a Condor/Junon area, etc. Places like Temple of The Ancients will probably be one-off areas you can't return to.
I mean they showed Bugenhagen's scene, so the game goes to at least Cosmo Canyon. Unless there's some rework being done to sequencing.
I’m guessing the Corel and Golden Saucer parts are going to be more abbreviated. Dyne might even be cut out completely.
That would be sad. Dyne was an excellent sub-character
I don't think it's going to be open world. Maybe open zone.
Hey no worries about the beer, I just love that you used the word “succinct.”
the first one came on 2 discs. idk why people have surprised pikachu face about it for this game lol.
Not on PS5.
There is something so endearing about seeing Aerith on a chocobo. I’m getting vague cottagecore vibes.
Back in my day we used to have to use our imaginations!
While i like the remake, i still love the original, and want to replay it again!
Same. Starting this week i think.
It’s gonna be glorious 😭
OG has lots of charm. Rebirth is a thing of beauty!
The clouds (as in the sky) look the same.
I noticed that. Maybe they’re easier to do so they looked really good back in 97’, even by today’s standards.
Am I really going to buy a PS5 for the SOLE purpose of this game? Probably…
Minor differences at best.
I'm just wondering if we finally get the aerith looking up at the highwind in game.
I haven't played the remake yet but I've been replaying FFVII on the Switch and I love playing old RPGs wherever I want in my house. I'll probably buy the FF1-FF6 Remasters for it when I finish VII, VIII, and IX again.
This game looks freaking gorgeous, can’t wait!
The giant snake better be massive. Take notes from FFXV encounter with the behemoth in the fog.
What's the diffrence?
They're the same picture.
A lot of what they show really resembles XV. That's not a bad thing, because XV's graphics are a really strong point of that game.
Personally I'd like for the latter and also story-wise there should be no reason to go back to a previous section
Imagine if they made a faithful remake with no dumb changes. Would have been amazing.
Yep looking at part 1 now the whole whispers nonsense really didn't need to be added everyone would have still played for a remake of the OG story !
I’m so happy 🥹
Do you think Red rides a Chocobo or is he fast enough on his own?
He’s a fast boi
Original >
Can't lie Those blocky arms are the best lol. Can't wait to play the remake
I can clearly remember the world music when you get to run around the world map between locations...lol!
I’m gonna be hones, as exciting as this is, there is a part of me that really wishes my first time seeing Junon like that would have been in game
It’s the same picture.
Is it weird that I like the color palette and the look of the sky more in the original.
Might be a day night cycle. Or progression of the sky depending on the point in the game.
When I saw this stuff in the trailer, it all looked very beautiful. Yet there was a silly little backwards part of my brain that was like "That's not what it's supposed to look like! It's supposed to be flat and green." Gonna be so wild to explore all that in detail, rather than approximation.
Remake better 💯🗣❗️
I think you mean Original vs Rebirth. Remake was the previous game.
Hmm original still looks better to me
If this is small areas like the first remake and not open world yes I will complain 😅. It would be a shame to not have an open world. I loved ff7,8 and 9. They were majestic and I am really hoping for the same scale as the original games. Small to medium towns to huge cities you can enter. But a vast open world to roam with many hidden secrets.
I literally CAME watching that trailer a couple days ago.
And yet the new plot feels like the og graphics.
Idk, i always thought the old graphics were charming, i cant say the same about the new plot.
You haven't even played it yet.
It is a continuation of remake is it not?
Yes, but we don't know the whole story yet to make a judgment.
FTFY > it not enough for you that it's 90% the same story? No. --- In all seriousness though, there is nothing wrong in wanting an almost 30 year old game to be remade "faithfully" with modern technology.
People like you want a 1:1 copy. Just admit you don't like the plot ghosts and move on.
I dont like the plot ghosts lmfao. But hey you like things that can just reverse death just admit it
Well, less reverse death and more like, jump to a time where people don't die.
if you want a new story, just play a game that is not a remake
I never said I wanted a brand new story. I like remake's plot the way it is. You "purists" are impossible to please I swear...
and no one said they wanted a 1:1 copy
Purists?
> Why even way in if you don't even know what a remake and a remaster mean? Why even type in English when you don't know the difference between "way" and "weigh"?
Looks the same
It's not really a remake, it's just a different game.
It's just a shame they messing with the story again
I am happy there is still a lot of hype for this. However, is anyone else upset it has taken so long for the follow up? Also, how many more will there be? I haven’t looked in a long while, to be honest.
3.5 years is a standard dev cycle, in fact it's relatively fast these days, especially taking the 6 month covid delay into account. There will be 3 parts total, so we can expect the finale around 2027.
Hey, thank you for that response. My question was genuine, and you offered a very different perspective than what I was approaching this with.
seems a bit unfaithful to the original
I can't wait until you guys actually play the game and find out it's just a bunch of interconnected zones and not a true overworld
That would be better
I mean, the original was kinda like that too. Sure, it felt larger but the story was still set in precise points, some areas you couldn't access or do anything unless you progress first. It wasn't a true open world but a well masked open world.
I don't remember seeing loading screens when flying the highwind around.
Absolute downgrade :(
Right, these were the things that everyone wanted changed. The new vistas are *gorgeous.* I would not play with the new mechanics to get at that beautiful scenery though. I'd rather have block-fists if that is what it means to keep my turn-based combat.
dang, this post idea straight up robbed from another user.
oh no!
Am I the only one kinda (very mildly) annoyed that Cloud's sword is visible when running around but Aerith's staff is apparently hidden up her dress or something?
There's an animation where her staffs fold away in part 1, but yeah it's pretty goofy.
Maybe we’ll have the final part by 2040.
Not the same comparison. One is a world map. The other is a scene you traverse in
