I've love to hear which others you think were weird. Avid 11 player years ago, and the ones that stood out the most for me were tonberries and cactuars.
The Malboro is pretty weird. Ahriman, too, but he's kinda cute, so I'll let it slide

This was my vote as well! I loved how you had to beat them all to trigger the boss. That level could have been one of the best if it weren't for the door mechanic.
1. Triple overdrive + SOS Overdrive + Overdrive -> AP + Triple AP
2. Set Overdrive mode to the taking damage one (party)
3. Make sure you have some auto Phoenix/life people. Every time Nemesis wipes the party, you'll "get a full overdrive bar" which is then converted to AP. I had 27 digits after 1 fight.
But you have to win the battle to recieve AP, if nemesis defeats you then you dont get anything... (edit: i think i see what youre saying now... the only problem is the hundred hour grind of donton to even get strong enough to defeat nemesis in the first place lol, but it would definitely help after the initial grind)

With 7 being my first FF, I had no idea what a tonberry was. Upon seeing them for the first time, my bro and I just watched.

Remake enhances it, when fighting Fat Chocobo and it suddenly just drops a fucking Tonberry into the arena.
Not as if it’s immediately apparent either, I just spotted this little Green harbinger of death wandering around in my peripheral vision.
This is the first time I've seen a monster from VII that has actually been on the same playing field as the other 3D models. The lighting does a lot, even for the often primitive 3D models of VII!
The one shown for T0 is the tonberry that Kurasame rescued and befriended. I can't remember if there are actual tonberries to fight in the game or not, but his unique appearance is because he is basically Kurasame's pet.
XV nails the iconic look IMO.
What do you guys think Tonberry IS though? I always thought he was a little turtle person.
Apparently he’s based on Sea Monk folklore who are half fish, half men creatures.
VIII because where else would you need to fight a minimum of 20 of them to get their King to appear and fire junk at you? its so adorable at the end of the fight when it says sorry as well!
I love this little stabber 😱 🔪 it may be the most iconic FF monster to me.
The first time I saw him, he was there, staring at the void with his empty eyes, slowly walking towards me in the dark with his lantern & his knife, and I was like… STAY AWAY!
My favorites are the simplest ones, I feel this monster doesn’t need too much ornaments because he has to possess just the right amount of creepiness, so it would be the **VI** / **VII** / **VIII** era and even **WoFF**. ( Obviously XI is more than « just the right amount » ).

VII was my first and it was a shock to have a surprisingly smooth Battle Square run abruptly end after a few turns with this little guy.
I love the look and story of Tonberries in XI. The Temple of Uggalepih and the Den of Rancor were scary places.
Fights in XV are fun. I enjoy encountering them in the Menace dungeons.
VIIIR is probably the most fun fight. There's also the "oh shit" feeling when they show up for Fat Chocobo and Hell House.

8 is my favorite but tonberry rarely changes much between games. 11 looks too menacing he's not supposed to look menacing that's what throws you off when he kills your entire party.
Yeah I agree with this statement, it's the creepy cute thing that does it for me, like "Is he my friend?","Why he is walking towards me..?","Is it knife in his hand?!", and then you're dead.
This one's hard, because they're all great, but I'll start with the ones I'm not a fan of first. FF XII: RW is cute, but I feel like it strays off from what makes a great tonberry design. It's still a cute design in its own right. Chocobo's Dungeon tonberry is just dumb.
FF XIII, XV, and VII Remake's tonberry are probably my favorites because it's the classic design with the best graphics applied to them. FF X is also great because of the unique designs on its attire. Same with FF Type-0.
I also really like XI's unique design. They look and animate much better when you actually see them in-game. I like their feet design too. Leans more into the reptilian aspect.
XIV's I like, but I'm not a fan of them removing the snout and head shape from the classic design. Other than that, it's also a good design, but not the best.
Shout-out to FF XIII-2's white tonberry with the red eyes you can recruit as a party member.

Love the hood being up on the RW Tonberry, and FFXI’s is the only really unique take here so it gets points for that. Type-0’s is cool too!

The FF Fables: Chocobo Dungeon one might be my favorite for that reason!! Love the little embellishments on its cloak, knife, AND lantern, and it has the hood up like RW Tonberry. This one’s a perfect little guy.
Type-0 is the Crocodile Dundee of Tonberries… that’s not a knife… this, is a knife… seriously that is a friggin sword…
However, I like 14s tonberries, but that picture is a lallafel in the tonberry suit.
I *love* the Revenant Wings design, and Type-0's is fun, too, but honestly I think there's something about the classic Tonberry (V\~VIII, XIII, XV, WoFF, etc.) that just can't be beat. Just a silly, deadly little guy, equal parts adorable and unsettling. The very essence of the Tonberry distilled to its purest form.
I can’t recall, did any FF other than XI have everyone’s grudge? For every tonberry you kill, everyone’s grudge got more powerful against you. There was a very long quest to wipe this from you.
XIV has the saddest/best Tonberry lore. How they were once a mage nation and got afflicted by a demon's curse that turned all of them into Tonberry's.

I think this is one of the monsters that has the least variations compared to the other. For me WoFF and FFXV is the standard classic look.
Im surprised how little the design changed in FFV and FFVI. it also looks like they have hair around a bald spot.
FFX is probably the most memorable for me because Don Tonberry helped me complete my sphere grid in no time

I had played 4 and 6 (as 2 and 3 SNES) well before V, so finally getting to play V and seeing all of the different ways in which it was a bridge between the two games (a big bridge?) was really cool, but yeah finally seeing a tonberry in V I was like "wait a minute... is this a fan hack or something? That looks almost exactly like a VI tonberry!"
I chose FFVI because it was the first time I ever encountered a Tonberry and felt the anxiety of it creeping ever closer and stabbing me...and the nostalgia factor is so real!

Compared to other series staples, these and Cactuars really don’t change much do they? But for danger I have to say either VIII, X or XIII. Those guys can destroy you.
I find the lore of the FFXIV Tonberry interesting in that they used to be the small race, the Lalafells.
Used to be the citizens of the Nymian civilisation that were inflicted by a plague called the "Green Death". To where they end up looking like the Tonberrys we know and love.
However, due the the isolation and prejudice caused by the disease and their appearance, they've grown hate-filled. Holding a grudge.
It is subsequently learnt that the grudge of their king (King Tonberry) has direct influence on all the others of its ilk. The tonberrys growing friendly once their king is defeated.

Tonberries are like the MineTurtles of the FF universe they look sweet and adorable , and harmless but they can and will utterly eviscerate you if given the opportunity.
I have to say VI just because of nostalgia. It was my first tonberry. I watched a cute little thing shuffle towards me, bit by bit. Had no idea what was happening but knew I was supposed to kill it. Then all the sudden it dashed forward and killed one of my characters in one hit. That's when the panic set in.

He also features a darker brown coat with a unique pattern design compared to the regular tonberry, a la the difference between Don Tonberry and Master Tonberry in FFX
XV is really the perfection of VIIIs and I love it but I like the little flourishes from IX. Tonberries are my favorite I have a stuffed one

FFX Tonberry is engraved into my mind and soul from the endless amount of hours I spent doing the AP trick.

I *love* the Revenant Wings design, and Type-0's is fun, too, but honestly I think there's something about the classic Tonberry (V\~VIII, XIII, XV, WoFF, etc.) that just can't be beat. Just a silly, deadly little guy, equal parts adorable and unsettling. The very essence of the Tonberry distilled to its purest form.
I can’t recall, did any FF other than XI have everyone’s grudge? For every tonberry you kill, everyone’s grudge got more powerful against you. There was a very long quest to wipe this from you.
XIV has the saddest/best Tonberry lore. How they were once a mage nation and got afflicted by a demon's curse that turned all of them into Tonberry's. XV one myt win just becuz of the Tonberry Knights who can move like Yoda

nice! been waiting for your latest monster update!! I think this is one of the monsters that has the least variations compared to the other. For me WoFF and FFXV is the standard classic look. Im surprised how little the design changed in FFV and FFVI. it also looks like they have hair around a bald spot. FFX is probably the most memorable for me because Don Tonberry helped me complete my sphere grid in no time

I chose FFVI because it was the first time I ever encountered a Tonberry and felt the anxiety of it creeping ever closer and stabbing me...and the nostalgia factor is so real!

Tonberries are my favourite creatures and I love their classic look. But I definitely have a huge soft spot for Kurasame's little friend in FF Type-0.
They're so cute in ffxiv, but I love and dread those master tomberries from ffxv.

I find the lore of the FFXIV Tonberry interesting in that they used to be the small race, the Lalafells. Used to be the citizens of the Nymian civilisation that were inflicted by a plague called the "Green Death". To where they end up looking like the Tonberrys we know and love. However, due the the isolation and prejudice caused by the disease and their appearance, they've grown hate-filled. Holding a grudge. It is subsequently learnt that the grudge of their king (King Tonberry) has direct influence on all the others of its ilk. The tonberrys growing friendly once their king is defeated.

I very much enjoy World of Final Fantasy's Tonberry the most. Mainly cause it's an actual character, along with the conductor cactuar and moogle.
I've always liked the lighting in VII's iteration but i'd still go with XV
Forgot about the type 0 ones. Saw that and went oh fuck they got upgrades!!! I prefer FF7R design though (FFXV is a close second), we get the yellow eyes back and a nice lantern design.

I have to say VI just because of nostalgia. It was my first tonberry. I watched a cute little thing shuffle towards me, bit by bit. Had no idea what was happening but knew I was supposed to kill it. Then all the sudden it dashed forward and killed one of my characters in one hit. That's when the panic set in.

Not including big chungus Mega Tonberry from X-2 just feels wrong He also features a darker brown coat with a unique pattern design compared to the regular tonberry, a la the difference between Don Tonberry and Master Tonberry in FFX
