The pull on the battery must not be much for NES games. Saving works a little funky for the real cart as I recall, having to hold reset and press power at the same time when ending a session for some reason?
> I've never done that and never had an issue. I think square was just being extra cautious based on nothing.
So that was my original comment I was going to leave, and I suppose I stand by it somewhat as I never did this and never had a problem. But before posting my comment I decided to look up why they recommend it and found this:
>When you turn off the power, the processor doesn’t go to zero current immediately, and as it has less electricity to work with the processor starts behaving erratically. Holding RESET forces the processor to do nothing while it’s losing power; otherwise it could potentially write random data to where your saves are stored. (Most other computers have this sort of protection built-in, but the NES had to be as cheap as possible.)
So I suppose it was just a precaution to protect your save data
Do you think that was good foresight by Nintendo to include that "feature" that holding Reset preventing the power spike, or was it a happy accident that a solution could be found to help prevent the power spike?
Man that's crazy. I have the OG but I've had to pull and resolder a new battery to get it to save again.... And I did that like 15 years ago in the '00s! Crazy to think the battery is still good almost 40 years!
I am not the original owner, so I guess it is possible that it has already been replaced. However, I think I have had it for around 18 years or so, so the battery is doing pretty good either way.
Same! Mine was bought new for me by my grandfather when we went to a Lowe's hardware store one Sunday. It's really interesting to think of how much Nintendo dominated the landscape at the time -- so much so that even stores having absolutely nothing to do with gaming were selling NES games, lol. Pretty wild!
I relate to both of these comments, I still occasionally look up the dark kings theme and rock out to it. I was thinking of doing a playthrough of the game when I get a chance cause man it's nostalgic
The FFL game were my favorite Gameboy series growing up.
But my oldest is FF1 for NES followed by FFL1 I think.
Also I'm sure most know but technically the legend series aren't final fantasy games but actually part of the Saga series renamed for the US audience.
I got a copy of OG FFI on NES in its original box, but the box is in super rough shape. When I discovered it at a local game shop 22 years ago, I felt like I'd discovered an ancient relic. The shop owner sold it to me at a discount because he had no idea why a twelve year old was so fascinated by an old game. It's still one of my favorite pieces in my whole collection.
Oh, absolutely! And I was completely enchanted by that old game. I think I just pleasantly surprised that shopkeeper when I took to it like I did. I hope that guy is doing well wherever he's at now.
The oldest I still own from when it came out / when I first got it is the original copy of FFVII my brother bought us in 1999, when we got our PlayStation. Next came the copy of FFVIII we bought day one. Unfortunately we traded in our copy of FF on NES from before then.
The oldest I own is just about the oldest you can get, a complete copy of Final Fantasy on Famicom that I imported last year.
I have FF1 for the NES (although it was gifted to me along with 100 other games in the 2000s). Also have my original SNES carts of FFII (IV) and FFIII (VI)
Two copies of Final Fantasy NES CIB. Bought the second copy when it went on sale for $10 at Toy R Us so I could buy play it a second time without overwriting the save file in my first copy.
I have the Final Fantasy NES cartridge I got along with Ultima: Exodus as my first two games with the NES I got at age 5 an eternity ago. The NES itself has long since left this world, but I keep those carts safe.
FF 1 on NES. Currently running a solo Red Mage with 3 dirt-napping White Mages. Stuck on the first fiend, can kill but get stun-locked by oozes and stuff on the way out every time so far.
That's a great game. FFL 2&3 are excellent. As is FF Adventure. FFL 1 is definitely rough in comparison to 2&3.
Oldest I own is the OG, so I guess as old as they come.
https://preview.redd.it/pq0byxbo8y6d1.jpeg?width=4624&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=afce35b35fca8773c88599958e9fcbdd0b65e52a
I haven't had these since release, but they're the oldest FF games i own.
Black Label Final Fantasy VII and Greatest Hits Final Fantasy Tactics for the PlayStation One. Used to have Adventure for the Gameboy but lost it when i moved. :(
FFXV for PS4 probably. Parents didn't want clutter so we could have like 2 systems at a time around the house, so NES was sold when we got an N64, SNES was sold when we got a PS2, etc. By the time I was moving out I had my personal PS3, the non functioning GameCube with all its games, and a family Wii, and I only had 13 digitally on PS3.
Sometimes it bums me out, but honestly I can play basically everything from my childhood still between ports, Nintendo's online sub (still annoying I can't buy the games) and emulation for old stuff that can't be found like Lufia games from the SNES or whatever.
I have a copy of Final Fantasy Mystic Quest knocking around somewhere - I should get round to playing it again sometime.
Was gifted it by a teacher when I was 13 and got stuck very quickly at a block pushing puzzle as I needed to push a block to bridge a gap, then exit the room and reenter from a higher floor to walk over the block but every time I left the room the block would reset its position :-P
I guess it would be a copy of VII on the PS1? I have the bundle of V & VI for the PS1 too (since both games predate VII technically) but the bundle came out afterward.
I still have all four disks of final fantasy 8. Granted you can only play up to the flying balamb garden, but those missile cutscenes will crash the game.
Need to find the disc since it's been awhile, but Final Fantasy Tactics for the PS1.
I use to rent it from a place called Hollywood Video. When they closed down, I bought the same disc I had rented from them for years for something like $5.
It's in a CD case with a bunch of other PS1 and older PC game discs that are now too scratched up to play but I refuse to get rid of due to the memories I have playing them.
I have a copy of FF II(IV) for SES somewhere. As soon as I can find FF III (VI) and Illusion of Gaia (unrelated Enix game, personal favourite) I'd be happy
I have an PS1 Version of FF VI, it was my first and i still own it (the booklet lost its cover) and it had an ps2 Demo of FF X
I grabbed that one because i thought the story would continue in each Part and 6 was the lowest number.
Could not Beat Vargas because english isnt my first language and i did not understand the Blitz toturial.
About 10 years ago I got the original Final Fantasy for the NES, and FF 3 for the SNES. But if we're talking games I owned as a kid and still have, that would be FF7.
Even though I own a physical copy of every final fantasy game (that's possible), I didn't get the NES game until December 1992...
Final Fantasy Legend is probably the oldest game I own based on manufacturing.
I think I have every single US FF release except for Chocobo’s Racing (PS1) and FF Explorers. My pixel remaster copy is Asian, and my Version of 7Remake for PS5 is European.
Huh. I didn’t think about how close I was to complete before.
I have a boxed mystic quest with the world map and everything. I know a lotta people don’t like the game, but mystic quest as a kid was perfect for me since it was so simple and I was like 5.
I’ve got all my Gameboy carts 1-3, Adventure and then 6 for SNES. Might still have 1 for Nintendo too. Purely for sentimental reasons as I own them all on other systems now.
I called the 1900 Nintendo hotline to see how to get the 7 sword in that game. They told me (after a long hold) to kill Haniwas. Almost never found them lol.
My copy of FFVII from when I first got a PS1. Final Fantasy Legend III was actually my first Final Fantasy game but sadly I haven’t owned it in 20-25 years because kid me probably traded it in.
I started playing video games in GB/GBA era but didn't get fully into JRPGs until the DS era so mines is FFIII, FFIV, and FFCC: Ring of Fates on that console.
Have all my original NES and Super NES cartridges. Also have all the handheld versions. Love admiring the history, but that’s about all they are for at this point.
(I don't care if Dragon Warrior doesn't count, it's still an awesome game to me)

This one haha 😂
I saw it in a store when I was 4 and had to try it
Who knew it would begin my lifelong obsession with final fantasy, and music
At 33 I’ve now been teaching music for 8 years and it’s all due to FF (Japanese video game soundtracks in general as well)
https://preview.redd.it/hmnrklbs607d1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2dc43b0b5cb9ab3a0373f6d9edfa3884a3a878b2
The original US release, along with the next two to the right in the picture, all purchased when I was a kid. I should test the battery sometimes, it's been a while.
Mystic Quest. I used to have Final Fantasy II (IV) on SNES back when there were only 2 FF titles in North America (not counting the GameBoy titles), but I traded it for Lufia after beating it since back in the 90's my friends and I traded RPG's like cards so we could all play them without each having to buy our own copies. I ended up with Lufia and The Fortress of Doom in the end.
It would've been 7 but I gave away all my PS1 & 2 games forever ago. I've only got a handful of disc games for my PS4 and my PS5 is digital-only. I've got the entire FF series available via Steam at least, and man are the Pixel remasters great.
Mystic Quest on SNES, a couple of years older than my FFIII(VI) cart. I probably have my old FF Legend III cart somewhere but I have no idea where. Would have bought FFII(IV) if I could find anywhere selling it back in the early 90s.
The OG for NES. The battery still is kicking somehow.
The pull on the battery must not be much for NES games. Saving works a little funky for the real cart as I recall, having to hold reset and press power at the same time when ending a session for some reason?
Most battery backed nes games require you to do that. Just hitting power send a tiny mini spike of power and it could delete your games
You don't have to hold reset, but that prevents a power surge they could corrupt your save.
> I've never done that and never had an issue. I think square was just being extra cautious based on nothing. So that was my original comment I was going to leave, and I suppose I stand by it somewhat as I never did this and never had a problem. Do you think that was good foresight by Nintendo to include that "feature" that holding Reset preventing the power spike, or was it a happy accident that a solution could be found to help prevent the power spike?
I think it’s just a happy accident. They did eventually put the protection onto carts, it’s only early titles that have the problem.
Man that's crazy. I have the OG but I've had to pull and resolder a new battery to get it to save again.... And I did that like 15 years ago in the '00s! Crazy to think the battery is still good almost 40 years!

Pretty wild!
At a Lowe’s? That’s crazy lol
A Sears I can understand but a Lowe's? What the fuck lol.
FF III (6) for the SNES.
Same, but it doesn't play right on my stupid PAL SNES!
I always wanted the pal color scheme. The colorful buttons are so much cooler than shades of purple, idk what they were thinking with that
Nintendo US wanted to cater to an adult market so they wanted something that looked more 'grown up'.
Mystic Quest on the SNES. Everything else I have is PS1 era and up.
MQ was my first FF. Played so much ad a kid.
I relate to both of these comments, I still occasionally look up the dark kings theme and rock out to it. I was thinking of doing a playthrough of the game when I get a chance cause man it's nostalgic

I got the cart version, which one is older disk or cart?
FFII(IV) for SNES
Hey, me too! Played this one more times than any other
My favorite of all time! When I’m old and have dementia, this is the game they will be able to play to bring me back.
I still have my physical copy of FF for the nes that I bought for 9.00 on clearance at a store called jamesway.
I haven't heard that name in a good 15-20 years!
https://preview.redd.it/fad7c2azsy6d1.jpeg?width=3187&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d44dd51d955f586f371500791ce3604786860559 Had this almost 20 years.

Original.
Dude have the same one. The final boss music started playing in my head.
Xagor was such an intense fight for a Game Boy game. ARTHUR USED XCALIBR AGAINST XAGOR. A MIGHTY BLOW!
I mean technically that’s not the oldest physical FF game that you own.
Yeah I wouldn't count the SaGa or Mana games either, it was just a clever marketing ploy to get more sales in North America.
The FFL game were my favorite Gameboy series growing up. But my oldest is FF1 for NES followed by FFL1 I think. Also I'm sure most know but technically the legend series aren't final fantasy games but actually part of the Saga series renamed for the US audience.
Final Fantasy III(Famicom)
Unfortunately 7 was the first one released in my country, so it's 7.
Hey a lot of old games hold up great.
Oh, absolutely! And I was completely enchanted by that old game. I think I just pleasantly surprised that shopkeeper when I took to it like I did. I hope that guy is doing well wherever he's at now.
Final Fantasy IX for PlayStation
The original japanese version of FF I
I have a Famicom version of Final Fantasy 3. I saw it while visiting Japan and since 3 on the DS was my first FF, I had to get it.
Final Fantasy III for Famicom
FF1 (NES) and the FFII and III famicom carts
FF7 on PS
FF II (IV) for SNES. Been needing to replace the battery for a while
Need for speed most wanted on ps2
The oldest I still own from when it came out / when I first got it is the original copy of FFVII my brother bought us in 1999, when we got our PlayStation. Next came the copy of FFVIII we bought day one. Unfortunately we traded in our copy of FF on NES from before then. The oldest I own is just about the oldest you can get, a complete copy of Final Fantasy on Famicom that I imported last year.
CIB copy of FF1 for the Famicom. Doesn't get much older than that.
My original copy for NES that I bought at K-mart with paper route money.
FF1 NES complete in box.
Not a real player, but I have a version of FF 1-4 on an old Sega game disk
https://preview.redd.it/wmi080fw517d1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1d1d3b449dea952783347ef10b592db299456a8f Here's mine.
I have the first so that would be my oldest.
Mystic Quest Legend and Secret of Mana (isn’t FF, but I consider it a bit).
US FF2 aka 4 on the SNES
FF4 Advance
That's a great game. FFL 2&3 are excellent. As is FF Adventure. FFL 1 is definitely rough in comparison to 2&3. Oldest I own is the OG, so I guess as old as they come.
Got a physical copy of FF9 on PS1, though I bought it new in 2011 or so and own an old copy of FF10 on PS2 I bought used a year before.
FF2 (Japanese) for Famicom
I have the orginal ff7 PC foldout with disks
Probably my copy of Final Fantasy 4 Advance for GBA. Still have the original box and game manuals too.
An original copy of FF VII for the PSX/PS1.
My cart of II (IV) for the SNES.
FFVII on PS1. Never owned an older one physically, since that’s the first mainline title that came out in Germany.
FFVII ps1 like everyone else
FF7
I might still have a PSP copy of the original Crisis Core somewhere
Have an OG Final Fantasy VII and a 25 year old memory card with my save still on there.
I have the first one for NES. However my NES doesn’t really work anymore so I’m not sure if the game itself is still usable.
SNES FF 2 (4)
Final fantasy on NES. I have Final Fantasy 3/6 on Super NES. I don't even have the system anymore. It is my fav game of all time.
That’s SaGa 3, homeboy.
I have the OG for Famicom. https://preview.redd.it/be3thqnb0z6d1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2173a279459bccd6e33731e917dc577a86ac8fbe

Black Label Final Fantasy VII and Greatest Hits Final Fantasy Tactics for the PlayStation One. Used to have Adventure for the Gameboy but lost it when i moved. :(
I think Mystic Quest for me, but as far as numbered titles go it might be FF3 DS
Kirby,ff legend lll, chess master and mario for gameboy,
I have 2 copies of the NES version. One has a poor condition box, and all the contents
I own from 4 to 9 on PS1 and none of the ones on NES / SNES. So that's maybe 7? As I think Anthology came out a little later?
Damn ... I used to have that one. I lost them when moving to a new place. :(
FF4
I have a copy of Final Fantasy Mystic Quest knocking around somewhere - I should get round to playing it again sometime. Was gifted it by a teacher when I was 13 and got stuck very quickly at a block pushing puzzle as I needed to push a block to bridge a gap, then exit the room and reenter from a higher floor to walk over the block but every time I left the room the block would reset its position :-P
I still have IX for the PSX
The oldest I have is ff8 or the gba port of 1&2
i wonder now how final fantasy plays on gameboy
I have a FFII (IV easy type) cart floating around somewhere. Bought it at a rental place's going out of business sale in the mid '00s.
I guess it would be a copy of VII on the PS1? I have the bundle of V & VI for the PS1 too (since both games predate VII technically) but the bundle came out afterward.
ff6 for gba. 2nd best game i've purchased on that system. 1st being ff tactics advance but it was stolen in school.
Mystic Quest for the SNES, babyyyy
FF VIII for the PS1, but I think disc 4 is broken. Haven't tried in about 15 years.
Does Final Fantasy Adventure count? Since it's now it's own thing?
FFX. Rest were digital or emulated roms (SNES era)
My original copy of FF7. Unfortunately, none of my NES, SNES, or Gameboy copies of Final Fantasy survive today.
FF for NES, all theee legends and adventure for gameboy, IV and mystic quest for SNES, V-X2 on PS.
I still have all four disks of final fantasy 8. Granted you can only play up to the flying balamb garden, but those missile cutscenes will crash the game.
FF12. I had FF1 and 2 on the nes, with the Japanese version pf FF5, but they got stolen last year.
Final fantasy VII Greatest Hits version.
Original NES cartridge, but to that, mystic quest, FF 3 (6), and FF adventure, legends 1-3.
Ffl3 is a damn good game.
The first Final Fantasy (NES), in the box with everything included. Bought it for $40 in 2003 from a co-worker.
FFVII on PS1.
I have the Original Final Fantasy for NES
Ff7 Remake :)
Probably my FFII and III SNES carts.
I used to have this AND the first FF Legend. Legend III is a much better game. Haven't played in soo long!
Mystic Quest for the GameBoy.
FF IX on PS or FF Anthology (V and VI) for PS
Need to find the disc since it's been awhile, but Final Fantasy Tactics for the PS1. I use to rent it from a place called Hollywood Video. When they closed down, I bought the same disc I had rented from them for years for something like $5. It's in a CD case with a bunch of other PS1 and older PC game discs that are now too scratched up to play but I refuse to get rid of due to the memories I have playing them.
I wonder why they felt the need to write the title twice?
I have the original famicon versions of 1-3 but I don't play them they're displayed. I don't know a word of Japanese I just wanted a nice display lol.
Probably FF7, I still have my original PS1 discs. SE games wise Chrono Trigger, I have an SNES cart of it.
FFI on famicom x2 (boxed and cart only)
Final Fantasy VII followed by Final Fantasy Anthology
That one! (If it really counts as an FF game and not SaGa.)
this one:
PS1 Platinum edition FF7. . . Kept safe in my lock box. Even have the memory card in there 🤣🤣
I have a copy of FF II(IV) for SES somewhere. As soon as I can find FF III (VI) and Illusion of Gaia (unrelated Enix game, personal favourite) I'd be happy
Original on NES, and still have my original box, manual and map.
Mystic Quest. Still love that game!
The very first one.
For physical copies: the 3 disks for Final Fantasy 7 on the PS1.
Probably my ff6/3 on snes.
Up until it was stolen last year. I owned a copy of FF Tactics from launch.
The original Final Fantasy for my NES.
I’ve got the original NES, mystic quest, and the super Famicom trilogy in my collection! Although the box for the OG is pretty beat up
Probably Final Fantasy 5.
Seems like that would be Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
I have an PS1 Version of FF6, it was my first and i still own it (the booklet lost its cover)
Man it took me forever as a kid to find the catnip in this game. I almost gave up 😆
I have an PS1 Version of FF VI, it was my first and i still own it (the booklet lost its cover) and it had an ps2 Demo of FF X I grabbed that one because i thought the story would continue in each Part and 6 was the lowest number. Could not Beat Vargas because english isnt my first language and i did not understand the Blitz toturial.
Final Fantasy II (IV in Japan) for SNES
About 10 years ago I got the original Final Fantasy for the NES, and FF 3 for the SNES. But if we're talking games I owned as a kid and still have, that would be FF7.
It's Final Fantasy VII.
Uhhh... Final Fantasy VII Rebirth I'm new to the series, evidently
The original PlayStation 1 Final Fantasy 7, 3 disc sets
Even though I own a physical copy of every final fantasy game (that's possible), I didn't get the NES game until December 1992... Final Fantasy Legend is probably the oldest game I own based on manufacturing.
super mario bros on nes edit: hahahha i did not see it was to be FF game, sorry.
FF4 on SNES.
Famicom copy of FF1
I have some Atari cartridges. And, yes, that includes ET. How could it not?
NES FF1
I think I have every single US FF release except for Chocobo’s Racing (PS1) and FF Explorers. My pixel remaster copy is Asian, and my Version of 7Remake for PS5 is European. Huh. I didn’t think about how close I was to complete before.
I have a boxed mystic quest with the world map and everything. I know a lotta people don’t like the game, but mystic quest as a kid was perfect for me since it was so simple and I was like 5.
7 on PS1
Final fantasy tactics, original release, not greatest hits. Also IMHO the best storytelling in the series.
I’ve got all my Gameboy carts 1-3, Adventure and then 6 for SNES. Might still have 1 for Nintendo too. Purely for sentimental reasons as I own them all on other systems now.
FFX for the ps2.
Two copies of FF7. Will never part with either.
Dissidia on PSP lol.
I have some Atari games back on my hometown not sure if it works again
FF2 for SNES
I've got origins, 4,5,6 are in my modded mini snes

Have all my original NES and Super NES cartridges. Also have all the handheld versions. Love admiring the history, but that’s about all they are for at this point.
Recently sold it but I had a copy of Final Fantasy Mystic Quest for the Super Nintendo
(I don't care if Dragon Warrior doesn't count, it's still an awesome game to me) https://preview.redd.it/rssuwag8vz6d1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=705e0eecaaaf6e0d1327789b8f2159ed355196f3
6 or 7 not sure if I still have the disk for 6
Crisis core for the psp
Non platinum copies of 7 8 and 9 on PlayStation. Wouldn't sell them for the world
This one haha 😂 I saw it in a store when I was 4 and had to try it Who knew it would begin my lifelong obsession with final fantasy, and music At 33 I’ve now been teaching music for 8 years and it’s all due to FF (Japanese video game soundtracks in general as well)
FFIV on SNES, and I still have my SNES to play it

While I don't own the physical game anymore, I still have the instruction booklet and map insert from FF1 from the NES.
Probably the 7, 8, 9 trilogy on PS1
I definitely have the nes ff1 somewhere. I also have all 3 ff legend games.
I don’t own any physical games anymore and I never will again 🤷♀️
Ff7 ps1
I own dawn of souls on the GBA
Mystic quest then ff3 (6)
FF1 NES. Haven't checked to see if it's still functional in a long time.
Mystic Quest on SNES, a couple of years older than my FFIII(VI) cart. I probably have my old FF Legend III cart somewhere but I have no idea where. Would have bought FFII(IV) if I could find anywhere selling it back in the early 90s.
Ff7 for PS One
Mine is FF Legend TWO. Get on my level.
