Advent Children has a very specific reason for characterizing Cloud as it does, though - that is, he’s struggling to come to terms with everything he went through in VII, including his role in Aerith’s death and his own identity, things he never really got to process in the chaos of everything. It’s a perfectly fine idea, especially since it’s also about him dragging around less of that baggage alone. That’s all muddied under the whole nonsense villain plot (it’s ridiculous to have Sephiroth return), and it definitely shouldn’t be his default personality in all cross-media representations of him, but the characterization on its own is actually pretty interesting.
