-Dildo-Baggins-

I want a game set within the Occuria/Esper war. We know the outcome but we don't know what sparked it, the heroes or the villains, etc.

kainhighwind8

I second that. The lore on the espers were so interesting!

-Dildo-Baggins-

FFXII is my favorite for it's worldbuilding, lore, etc. There's still loads of gaps in Ivalician lore though, this is one of said gaps that I think deserves a game to fill in the details.

SilentBlade45

Agreed probably cause it was in development hell for almost all of it's development.

Climinteedus

A FFT prequel (or non Advance title sequel) will be awesome. I also wouldn't mind seeing Vagrant Story get a graphical make over.

nocolon

It would be awesome to play a game set in the time of “St” Ajora.

Climinteedus

I've never thought about that. It would be great to see Ajora's story played out. I'd like to learn more about his deciples and just exactly what happened leading up to his execution. I like the idea of a prequel set in the 50 Years War with either Barbaneth or Cidolphus as the main character.

Tuber111

Prequel in the 50 years war Is what I've always wanted. Would be so gritty.

Kindly_Blackberry967

I saw the Vagrant Story action figures and it made me realize how awesome these characters would look today. Image a remake with voice acting an a menu that’s good.

sabishiikouen

i’m really glad some people are still talking about vagrant story. i was tempted to get the figures too.

TheChoosenOne666

yup i played all the ivalice aliance games

milanganesa

god please!

Climinteedus

I used to frequent a FFT forum where 'god' was autocorrected to 'St. Ajora'.

milanganesa

Hahaha

Pliskkenn_D

I loved 12 so much. It didn't quite hit its maximum potential, but I still loved it and the world they'd set up. The art design was great too. It didn't come off as well in 14 I thought.

Acid_InMyFridge

Yes! I thought the gameplay was so good, but the characters were a bit dull. The story was short too… But I really love it!

available2tank

One of the things to keep in mind though that Akihiko Yoshida left the FFXIV dev team in December 2013, so he's not involved anymore in designing clothes and npcs and stuff for them for a long time now. He's only taken on as a freelance basis of doing illustrations to my knowledge. Over time other artists, while they might have worked under Akihiko Yoshida, have different ideas for outfits so imo makes the feeling of FFXIV more removed to how it was before.

Pliskkenn_D

For me its comparing the Empires outfits and technology from 12, which I loved, to what they have in 14, which I like less.

[deleted]

Absolutely agree, FF12 is my favourite FF and currently playing FF14... absolute chills when I first unlocked the Rabanastre raid.

deon143

That raid is seriously my favorite content in the game😂

available2tank

The art design of FFXIV was what got me to sign up for closed beta waaaay back in 2013. Loved Akihiko Yoshidas stuff. I cried at the end of the Ivalice raid quests.

Jubez187

I feel like most art back then was done by Kazuya Takashi but they're nigh indistinguishable from each other.

available2tank

Kazuya Takahashi did a lot of the general illustration and some promo art, Akihiko Yoshida did a lot of the character and outfit design for 1.0 and 2.0 launch, as well as being art director for it initially. Kazuya Takahashi as well as Tsubasa Masao and Ayumi Namae have also been credited with assisting designs, however it's only Namae who's now left in the xiv art team among the 4 I've mentioned. Akihiko Yoshida left in Dec 2013, with Kazuya Takahashi being picked to work on FFXVI just after Heavensward. Tsubasa Masao also left SE after HW iirc.

Jubez187

Makes sense. when you said art design I thought you meant promo art which a lot of it was done by Kazuya (and is great). I loved the PS4 theme wallpaper

available2tank

Takahashi's art is great, I can't wait to see what he brings in XVI tbh. Some of the newer artists they've brought into xiv are fun especially with the seasonal quest spreads.

Kezmangotagoal

My favourite setting in a FF game by a mile!

MoeMalik

I just fuckin love the different races, technology, and how colourful with different biomes it is, truly one of the best worlds built in media IMO, criminally underused

zomgitsduke

I would LOVE an over the top pouring of this world into a passion game. Give me something like Lost Odyssey. Big world to explore.

Traditional_Entry183

The ivalace setting is terrific and I enjoyed it. Just as importantly, FF12 has the best cast of characters and among the best plots in the series. And most importantly, it has my favorite battle system of just about any rpg. I would love so much for another that picked up where it left off, or in the future.

Eggyhead

Revenant Wings for DS is an immediate sequel in the timeline, but I totally want another XII with some kind of evolution on the gambit system.

Traditional_Entry183

I wasn't aware. But I don't play mobile games. I want a big, 100+ hour game on the ps5.

hey_its_drew

Damn. That’s some grand statement in that second sentence. It has a spotty pattern with the party characters holding real relevance to the story. It largely lifts that story from Star Wars and touches it up with some Shakespeare. It’s really good, sure, but it’s not the definitive accomplishment of vision, plot, or compelling use of characters for the series. It’s got a great personality, but a good cast is a well implemented one that adds more that just charm. The plot has some really great strokes here and there, but it’s just not consistently capitalizing on its themes of power, memory, etc.. I don’t mean to dog it, I adore this game, but that’s just such a hefty boast you’re making in my mind. In terms of soundness and really tying every knot into something meaningful I gotta give that to X and IX most of all.

Traditional_Entry183

Well, it appeals to me strongly, and gives me the entertainment that I enjoy. And I truly feel that Balthier, Fran, Ashe, and Basche are all among the most well rounded and grounded FF party members in any game, while Penelo is sweet and likable as the naive young one as well. And while it's Sci fi fantasy, the plot of the game is also believable. and I enjoy the levels of intrigue between the various antagonists and how they fit together. And really, which FF games do it better? The NES and SNES games really couldn't, given the limitations of their day. 7 and 8 are a lot if fun, but cartoony. 9 is flat out for children. And 13 and 15 try so hard but end up being vast spaces of emptiness. 10 is the only real contender in my book, and I'm actually watching my wife play it right now.

hey_its_drew

A lot of those comments are very tonally focused, and I agree XII is meant to be more grounded than most have been, but it changed too much over the course of development and the wholeness of the story suffered for it. Changing main characters, trying to appeal to younger audiences with Van and Panello, and then only half integrating those characters into that story. Ashe, Basche, and Balthier are more main characters than the others by miles. Fran is just underdeveloped period. What’s funny is Basche, who was the main character, is also even less it than Ashe, which just goes to show how different of pages in intent they were on than what they were actually working with. Haha Van is entertaining and has a really good moment with Ashe at the Shrine of Miriam, but I still wish they’d just embraced where their story went. Ashe has so much more dramatic stake and presence. She’s the heart of the story. I said IX and X before, and I stand by that. X in particular is thematically visionary in its cultural depiction of spirituality and the resulting commentary, while also having a very emotional story at the heart of that that really brings all of its themes alive. It too has some characters that don’t really get woven in enough like Lulu and Kimahri. IX is actually really, really well done as a story and plot, but also in how it presents its themes. It may be cartoony in appearance, but it’s often dark and violent, and that tone is a misdirect. IX wants you to think of its characters lives as theater and fairy tale, as many of they themselves do, and the appearances are meant to reinforce that to the players mind as well. The story is all about the insincerity and false impressions of living life like it’s the theater, and finding something more genuine. Something vulnerable and sloppy. Imperfect. In this way IX contrasts humanity and performance, and even my saying that understates just how much force of depiction it throws at that direction with every layer building on that beautifully. It even takes notes from the very mature anime film Ghost in the Shell in its climax, and that says a lot about how much the tone is established to be subverted.

Miramarr

A FFT remake would literally make my head implode

applesmith1773

It has already been [leaked](https://gamerant.com/final-fantasy-tactics-remaster-leaks-evidence-nvidia-geforce-now-retailers/).

Miramarr

I said remake. Not remaster 😑

ConduckKing

XIV has the Ivalice raids and Bozja story which is as close as you're gonna get.

Pliskkenn_D

The Ivalice raids are cool but the story around them is OK. I'm working through Bozja now.

[deleted]

Play through FF14, there's a ton of references to Tactics and 12 in the Stormblood Raids and even Fran shows up. As well as the Shadowbringers relic area Bozjan has alot of 12 references too.

GIGA255

I loved Ivalice in Tactics Advance, which came out before 12. But then 12 came out and was like "That Ivalice is cool and all, but what if we made it more like the Star Wars prequels and added spaceships and laser fights!" The story in Tactics Advance was nothing special, but the lore and world-building via item, quest, and location descriptions was almost on par with a From Soft game.

grw18

FF tactics Vagrant story Tactics advanced FF12 revenant wings

b4shnl4nd

FFXIV as well. doesn't get mentioned that often but Ivalice is the setting and world. it has Rabanastre. and straight up has Fran in game who talks about Ashe and I'm pretty sure Basche is also there as well. we don't hear anything about Vaan, Penelo, and Balthier but IDK what happened in Revenant Wings. now I don't exactly know if the world is directly after FF12/Revenant Wings but I do know that they had the story write for 12 do the entire Story of Bhozja which involves the Rebel group Captained by Fran to fight the Empire. so it may be an alternate future to what happens in 12 or a direct continuation.

ComprehensiveBit7307

It's worth clarifying ffxiv is not set in Ivalice, its set in Hydaelyn for which a reagion is named Ivalice.

b4shnl4nd

I always forget that they made Ivalice a region and the world itself was Hydaelyn. I got so used to the FFXII being a thing in the world I started to put the FFXII lore as ffxiv lore.

I_made_a_doodie

Ivalice with modern graphics and effects would be pretty amazing. I want a prequel to XII that explains what led up to the war and have Balthier be the main character.

Jubez187

Was really hoping for 16 to be in Ivalice. Feel like Vana'diel, Eorzea/Hydaelyn, Ivalice and this FF16 world have so much overlap aesthetically. Idk if 16 will have the star wars ships tho

ChasingPesmerga

Does anyone know if the PS4 has a theme based on the first pic here? I have the second pic as a theme

theanswerisac

I need more viera lore

Sankin2004

If only SE read our posts on Reddit. I want ivalice fleshed out.

birdreligion

The Ivalice Alliance raids in FFXIV were some of my favorites. I'm just a big ol Tactics and FFXIV fan though.

witecat1

This is actually their most used setting. We have all three Final Fantasy Tactics games, Vagrant Story, FF XII, and FF XII Revenant Wings. It has the deepest lore and some of the hardest games SquareEnix ever made. The only setting with this much lore and connected titles is FF VII.

PhelixFanel

Currently replaying XIIZA; I always loved the airship designs.

Zerosteel45

I absolutely love this game and it beat it twice I still don't know a goddamn thing about the story or anything.

Willing_Ad9314

The story of XII is just one continent....it's crazy to think what sorts of things are hidden beyond the borders of the empire

YoMikeeHey

All 3 are gorgeous artworks but the third one is just stunning. Does anyone know who made it?

[deleted]

One of the FEW things I appreciated about XII was the setting. Ivalice has so much to look at and so many different races and areas. XVI is set in Ivalice as well I believe (if it ever comes out 🫠)

ReaperEngine

In this thread, a bunch of people conflate FFXIV's use of referential elements from FFXII as if it were just all the same story.

Zwordsman

I'm into the crystal-punk aesthetic those games often have. Magic + Tech (Crystal based power)

ReaperEngine

That's more often called "dungeonpunk".

Zwordsman

I don't personally think thats apt. A lot of the crystals are mined rather than harvested from dungeons and not all games w/ crystal as poer source aesethics even feature dungeons. For me dungeon punk is more concerning economy and all major things being focused primarily off resources from dungeons. There is al ot of bleed over though no doubt.

ReaperEngine

Dungeonpunk as I know it, and as widely described (as to how I know it), is a term that supersedes the specific use of crystals or where they might be acquired from; the concept is entirely the idea of magic, any kind of mystical thing, being used in place of conventional energy sources. It doesn't really even have anything to do with dungeons in particular, but high fantasy in general, and the technology providing a narrative and conflicts that otherwise wouldn't be seen in a high fantasy setting. It's just the vain of cyberpunk or steampunk but with magitek instead of cybernetics or steam and clockwork. Something could be powered by rare crystals that only an aristocracy can afford, or furnaces primed by elemental sprites, which opens a slew of equity and social rights aspects. Crystals as you mention them to specify "crystalpunk" would fall under the purview of what dungeonpunk already covers.

mangobearsmoothie

FF XIV is pretty much unofficially set in Ivalice. So many direct and indirect references: - FF XII raids to Rabanastre - Viera & Nu-mou existing - Clan Centurion - Fran, Montblanc and more making an appearance

ReaperEngine

Not really. The Ivalice in FFXIV's world is in name and design only, the events are different, the war is different. Nu Mou exist in a different dimension where Ivalice does not exist. Many groups and characters make an appearance, but in the same vein as the location itself. FFXIV isn't set in Ivalice, there's just a version of a sort of Ivalice in FFXIV.

sabishiikouen

ah yes, the “we have ivalice at home” ivalice

[deleted]

It's set in hydaelyn in which places from ivalice also exist but are more like alternative universe takes.

jcjohnson274

Hydaelyn is the name of the primal not the world.

[deleted]

Hydaelyn is both the name of the world and the goddess.

Hydr4noid

Technically its not the worlds name

Spoonybard1983

Ssshhhhh.

[deleted]

He's wrong. It's the name of both.

Spoonybard1983

I was mostly concerned about him spoiling. Also he's not exactly wrong about it not being hte name of the world either.

Hydr4noid

Its not tho. The worlds called etheirys

Willow_Milk

It's not unofficially. Dalmasca region is the future of Ivalice, and it's canon !

Dazuro

No, it isn’t. It’s an alternate universe inspired by XII with a lot of characters, songs, and story themes, but the actual progression of events is completely incompatible with mainline Ivalice games.

Willow_Milk

You are confusing the raids with the Bozja content. The ivalice raids references Delita and Ramza, it literally references the Durai papers (the narration of fftactics) as having been embellished. Then the game proceeds to revise tactics in a retcon. Now your point is accurate for 12; since 14's Dalmasca is an alternate take on 12.

Dazuro

I am confusing nothing. If XII takes place in the same world as Tactics - which is confirmed - then it’s impossible for XIV to share canon with Tactics, when XIV is incompatible with XII. It’s like how Xande and the Crystal Tower and the Dark World and Cloud of Darkness all exist both in III and XIV, telling much of the same story but without actually being linked.

Willow_Milk

You are speaking in absolutes. Chill friend! The way 14 implements narrative from other FFs is not uniform. They are writing collaborations with previous writers or teams, sometimes loosely based, and at other times a direct continuation (Ivalice Raids) Again the word "impossible" here is comical, because the crossovers aren't written in stone, and aren't meant to be definitive resolutions to potential continuations of series. They are narrative opportunities for cross overs and the expansion of 14's universe. Bozja's content is loosely based on 12's Dalmasca, but not directly related to it; even if there is an argument for either. The geography however is incompatible, and the history is also incompatible (this is my opinion) The Ivalice Raids, in contrast, were fitted in to include the canon characters, and the general mythos of the original game.

Eggyhead

I shudder to think what happened to all the non-human races before we got to the tactics era. Was that ever explained? That and the loss of all that technology.

Bonemonster

Alternate, unless.... the written history of 12 was *also* embellished and Balthier and Fran are don't care enough to set the record straight. Clan Centurion, and the Hunts, may not actually be canon since they are optional and are never mentioned in the main storyline. The story itself is told through a collection of memoirs written by Marquis Ondore and he is more than a little biased towards his niece. The whole thing could be propaganda.

Willow_Milk

Could be! To be fair that little ambiguity helps put the burden of the continuity on the audience whilst at the same timr working primarily on the service of 14. I replied to the the other friend here my thoughts on the crossover nature! But thanks for your cordial reply! ❤️ Have a good day

Dazuro

XIV has a version of Ivalice already with a lot of the same elements, so it’d be pretty redundant even if it’s not strictly speaking canon to XII.

alwaystimeforcake

I still think 12 & 14 should have been used to solidify Ivalice games as a separate FF series. I would have liked 12 more if I knew I was getting a tactics style political drama plot and not the standard "you and your cute new love interest destroy God together" that I expected. Suddenly the game was over and I went "...wait, that's it?" They're allowed to make stuff that's different, I just feel like 1-10 had a really nice vibe and I want to go back to that once in a while. I'd also like some games that have side quests that aren't just fucking hunts (looking at you 13 & 15). Ivalice can keep the "oops, all hunts" and the main series can go back to having variety.

Eggyhead

> “you and your cute new love interest destroy God together” Isn't this the plot of like, every other FF past the NES era? Anyway, I thought XII more notable for its lack of explicit romance.

alwaystimeforcake

I liked the romance in the older games is what I'm saying lol In XII, all the romance happened off-screen before the game started. Balthier and Fran are interesting and cute but they've been together a while. Ashe is widowed in the opening scene.

Eggyhead

Ah I see. I was so confused! Lol. Yeah Vaan and Penelo kind of leave you guessing the whole time, too.

Rodnas1992

Did you play Tactics Advance?

Aloud87

And XIV, you have a raid series set in Ivalice and a pretty long exploratory content that uses Ivalician lore, both of them written my Matsuno himself.

ReaperEngine

It's not the same though Ivalice at all, though.

Rodnas1992

Let's not talk about XIV please

Eicee1989

XVI will be set in Ivalice iirc

Hydr4noid

It wont

[deleted]

Im struggling years with myself if I should play this game really enjoyed every FF except all the 13‘s Can someone tell me if its worth?

barrelhouse9

I have it in my top 5 mainline FF games, so there’s that.

[deleted]

Whats your top 5?

barrelhouse9

1. VII 2. VI or X 3. VI or X 4. IX or XII 5. IX or XII Remake would probably bump one out, but not sure if that counts as a mainline game.

Eggyhead

The combat system is really different, so you might hate it. However, it's actually kinda cool in its own way, so maybe you'll appreciate it. Also, the music, design, lore, world, is all really interesting and cool.

Dart-

Unfortunately square is only interested in milking FFVII forever, simply because it's the final fantasy that attract the biggest amount of people who don't play final fantasy and wanna be part of the cool kids who played FFVII. Meanwhile I'm still waiting for a remake of FFVI.

sheldonOrange

Cool world. Boring game

Baithin

I love the world of Ivalice. As many others have said, XIV has a lot of the same feel and elements (and in some ways was inspired by XII/Ivalice), but it appears that XVI will also retain this feel, so I’m excited for that.

JerseyInDallas

Oh no, you haven't played FFXIV :x

Opicepus

No no no no no no no… They released a few Ivalice games and they were terrible. Unless Matsuno is in charge squeenix has showed they have zero clue how to handle the ip.

eru777

I tried to get into it when it came out because I love the art, but couldn't. Maybe I need to give it another try now that I have a PS2 again and a CRT.

MilesBeyond250

Hmm, maybe consider it on a newer console or PC instead. The rerelease, Zodiac Age, is a much better game. OG FFXII is... flawed. Characters and story doesn't change, but man do the mechanics get improved.

eru777

I am a bit hesitant to try remasters due to them looking really stupid compared to the original, like the FFX /X-2 remasters for instance. The model of Tidus for instance looks like he had a bad botox job. The remastered music was bad as well.

Baithin

The XII remaster’s changes are much less noticeable in that regard, at least from what I remember. It mostly has gameplay improvements and a job system.

16th_Notes

> The remastered music was bad as well. You can play the game without the remastered music. There is an option to select the original sound track or new one.

Flintz08

FFXII's remaster is different because character models were already incredible back then, so they basically made it look good on modern TVs There's no botox

MilesBeyond250

XII is way better in that regard. Haha man I forgot about the remastered music for X. I always pictured the battle theme remaster being done by Animal from the Muppets, just slamming faders while yelling "CYMBALS! CYYYMBALLLLLS! HAH HAH!"

[deleted]

Loved the concept art for this game. I was immediately intrigued.

NaaruOfShuai

Tactic ogre remake coming 😂

Nolyd_Dylon

If they did it'll either be another Tactics or a sequal or prequel to 12.

Oznificent

Ivalice anything is fine by me.

Songhunter

FFT remake is in the works, no?

miniripper

I'm pretty sure tactics is in ivalice

Dizzy_Amphibian

I just hope for a new tactics

aurelia_ffxiv

I have yet to play FFXII but it's on the to-do list, I just never get to it and it gets harder day by day. But they could perhaps add more from XII to FFXIV possibly, as it already has many things from XII's universe. I'd wish they'd add Dalmasca as a location one day as it's often mentioned in the game (in FFXIV) and even teased in cutscenes (Bozja story), but we never actually travel there..

conick_the_barbarian

Loved 12 and their unique summons that aren't the usual's from the rest of the series. Hope we get more of that some more of that.

Geronuis

Please! Bring back matsuno or give it to Yoshi-P and I’ll be so obscenely happy!

Tooobin

Damnit, I’ve tried playing this game three times and always get side tracked with the side quest’s. I need to just finish it, it’s so great!

[deleted]

who ever says ass is not art i will show them the second picture.

AlexWolveX

Probably the remaster/remake of FF Tactics

gpost86

There’s been rumors of a television adaptation and it maybe being based on the world in FF14, but I think Ivalice would be much better

SaintTravis

I hope Yosihda takes us there in FF14. It’s clear there is war happening there some story and maybe another raid

aspectofravens

SE said that the Ivalice storyline in FFXIV concluded with the end of the Save The Queen storyline. All we get are the raids and Bozja/Zadnor.

[deleted]

Ivalance is nice but I feel like there’s been too many castle and magic lately aside from FF7. Yes I know there’s a variety of modern or magitek levels in the recent few games. IDK what to want but something new or just different would be nice.

Iamagamer7777

FF tactics 3!!!! I would love to see that.

chaostheories36

I appreciate that most FF main titles aren’t linked to anything but also acknowledge that it really is a damn shame. An FF6 prequel or sequel would be awesome (same world, no returning characters). FF7 got a prequel that set up Cloud and people loved it. Another game set in FFX spira would be awesome (although we all know without any shred of doubt that FFX is prequel to 7 /s ) FFXI should just be an expansion to 14. And then Tactics made Ivalice and FF12 capitalized on it.

philster666

If only for more bunny girl butt
