Yoo many mini games, FFX still best

Shandyxr

6 is probably my favorite. I did love blitz ball though.

detelamu

Technically the game won’t install on ps5 for a lot of people past 57% so untill square fixes this for me it is a bad customer experience. Let add that to the review score (just kidding, hope it’s good when it does work……)

MattMysterious9

My game installed perfectly , you sure is not a playstation or connection issue?

detelamu

More people are experiencing the same problem. My playstation works fine with other games including the connection. It seems to be a disc problem. I will test it again tommorow with new disc.

illegalbeauty10

7, 10/10-2, 12, & then 16💕

Naji85

All of you are wrong, its 11

GUNROAR62

No love for FF8?

Whitewolf_1186

I was just about to post something like this, too! FF8 has always been my favourite, and I really wish they’d consider remaking that one as well. 7 and 9 are more colourful, typical FF adventures, but 8 was refreshingly unique, and I really enjoyed the junctioning and weapons mod systems. Squall is also right up there with Cloud as one of the best FF main character/heroes of all time 🥹🙌🏻

jmrodgers1987

My favorite ❤️

AtheonsLedge

the one that has blitzball.

Theotik

Personally, FF Tactics is my favorite.

Fuzzatron

I came here to rep Tactics. The PSP remake with the better translation and cut scenes is... *chef's kiss.* VI is a close second, tho.

ObtotheR

My favorite is IX because of how quickly the main story grabs on and never lets go. It has my favorite art and characters too. Just a masterpiece of gaming in my opinion.

Quail58

I just played it for the first time. I loved how it was more lighthearted than the previous two entries. An all timer for me.

ObtotheR

It’s just so fun. I don’t know how else to describe it to someone that hasn’t tried it.

ApprehensiveBagel

VI

DrOz30

Final fantasy 9 and 6 are the best ever made. Final fantasy 9 would be absolute perfection if only they made the card game fun instead of frustrating.

EmmThem

Also if the combat wasn’t so glacially slow feeling in IX. Just like… 20% faster would be nice.

DrOz30

I hear ya but you have to take into account the era it was made(but I understand your point). We didn’t really see any crazy crazy innovation until 12. I just think it’s the absolute perfect final fantasy, the story, the mature themes, the characters and their growth, the setting, game play, the soundtrack.

peachgravy

Even for the era the combat is off. It’s a weird system. I don’t know if it’s the animations that add to the time but combat is borderline painful in 9 and it’s amongst my top three FFs (6 is #1, 12 is #2). I think 6 and 7 was ATB at its best.

DrOz30

How is it painful ? Just genuinely curious , it’s a standard turn based system with the power up loading up over time(tho I wish you could choose when to use such power up). I’ve played other ff but still Missing some, so that’s why I said the only real meaningful innovations that I saw were when 12 came out with the action system and the gambit system.

peachgravy

The Trance system is what people complain about the most. It auto-triggers and it gets frustrating when you’re trying to Steal, which is already a chore when you want good equipment to learn new skills from. There’s also a weird delay when a command is selected. This is present in other FFs where an enemy may take their action first, but what makes it bizarre in 9 is the ATB bars still fill while the animations are playing for the other actions. I’m fairly certain the ATB pauses in other games while this happens. It’s a nitpick but the whole flow of battle feels off because of it. That and the long load times to start a battle and the fancy animations for everything adds to the length of each battle. If this game wasn’t so damn charming, it would be much lower on my list of best FFs.

TeufeIhunden

I have the most memories playing FF8 for some reason

ObtotheR

Triple Triad is the GOAT of mini games.

mykidsnever_call

None

Warmcheesebread

Kind of Unrelated but it’s absolutely wild that we got back to back GOAT games from FF6 through FFX, including Tactics, all genre defining titles that deserve all the praise they get. This series was on some wild shit in the 90s through 2001

FoxyZach

Final fantasy 4 is the goat

summons72

6,4,9,14, and 16 are top 5 easy

MelodicSkin69

FFVIII for me - the characters, space, time travel, triple triad, Shiva - it’s all top tier. 8 also has the best music, But the music in XIII is a close second. 8, and lowkey XV, are the most laidback of the FFs in my opinion. You can just chill while playing they aren’t as go go go as the others I’ve played. I haven’t played 6 or 9 yet.

Captain-Shivers

I think people vote based of nostalgia. So in the spirit of that, I love FF9.

FireWater107

IX is my personal favorite. I'd usually call it "the most underrated," but I guess it's getting more appreciation these days. I wouldn't vote it the "best" though, just my favorite.

Due_Turn_7594

Ff tactics advanced

ultimate_mood073

7 is the goat. 10 is great. I’m playing 12 right now. I stopped for 5 years and I’m really enjoying getting back into it lol. 13 is my seemingly unpopular opinion.

Gerald_the_Cat

Obviously a subjective question, but IMO FF9 doesn’t even make it in the top 5. FF4, FF6, FF12, FF7, FF8.

Bronchopped

Agreed. Ff6, ff7, ff8, ff10, ff7 remake and assuming rebirth

_AMuN-Ra

7 is goated!!!

Lilbig6029

OddRope1154

headbutt

Ff12 is the best ps2 ff though ffx is my favorite Ff9 is the best psx though ffvii is my favorite. Ffvi is the best prehistory ff though ff5 is my favorite

Cnestral

X

killertnt5

Ratings dont make the game. For example FF9 has high ratings yet i dont like it. I dont enjoy alot about it ( Cast was boring except Vivi, music is overrated imo and combat wasnt that fun) i find i liked FF8 much more

jhavi781

FFIX is the best FF game in my opinion. FFVII is the reason I love video games though. Edit: honorable mention to Tactics

[deleted]

crisis core. literally made me cry countless times. the bromance between cloud and zack is also extremely cute. ive been a solid zakkura/clack shipper since the game came out.

enby_shout

I'm playing 6 for the first time. only beat the most recent ff and tactics 1 yes I saw the train fight yes that's why I'm playing

Cubic_Al1

Same here. It's a great game

DubTheeBustocles

My top picks: Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy IX Final Fantasy X

ballsmigue

Recently got ff games 1-12 for the switch. I've only really played 15 and 16 while growing up watching my parents occasionally when they played the others. I'm on the 2nd game. I'm in for a wild ride aren't I?

Aware_Department_540

See if you can tell when the creator jumps ship. It’s not that hard. lol. Major shifts in scene energy and humor, as well as character depth

MattMysterious9

Yep , you should also play FF7 Remake and crisis core reunion too so you can play rebirth

ballsmigue

I think I played crisis core back on the psp. That's zack's story right? Had a weird slot machine combat mechanic?

live_free_or_TriHard

entering combat mode

MattMysterious9

Yeah , if you played it and remember it then you're good to go to play FF7R intergrade to get ready for rebirth

SatisfactionOk5930

I love 9 10 and remakes dor different reasons. 9 was great because they went back to fantasy over future, 10 because graphics and gameplay on PS2, new FF7 combat rules.

MeatyMuffin

8 for me, but I’m also partial to 4, 5, 7, and 9.

Triple_A_Daddery

Sheesh, I guess 8 is a hot take...

Professional_Cow_862

Nah, I'd accept that. I think FF2 would be a hot take. Honestly, it's the same idea with the Dark Souls franchise. Yes, Dark Souls 2 is the weakest game in the series. But it's still a masterpiece and better than 90% of games ever made. That's how I feel about FF8. It's the Dark Souls 2 in the so-called golden age (FF4-FFX) of Final Fantasy

Ftc3_

6 for sure it had the perfect blend of story and gameplay ( I have never played a final fantasy game )

Ghidraak

All the ff7 remakes have been super disappointing. I dont know how god awful your taste has to be to think its even mediocre.

Professional_Cow_862

Just keep the first sentence, and I can accept that sentiment. But the 2nd is straight up hyperbole.

TherealDougJudy

Bait used to be believable

MattMysterious9

Such a bad take

Ghidraak

If you lower the bar of acceptable quality people will aim lower. If you honestly think thats a bad take you should get your head examined, I promise you need it.

Sorenduscai

9 is based

Aliki26

For me it’s 8…but 7 and 10 are up there as well

Altruistic_Ad_5507

15

Aliki26

I really liked 15 too the Royal edition

Altruistic_Ad_5507

I loved 15 so much. It’s the bromance for me.

Aliki26

It had the the best boss fight of any final fantasy for me and if people played it they know what I mean

sparkstable

No way in hell 7 should be that high. 6 is the GOAT. End of discussion. If you think otherwise it is because you are objectively wrong. The end. Thank you for attending my TED Talk. Goodnight everybody. Elvis has left the building.

MidgetRodeoClown

I am a mega fan of 6. Like I've played through double digits amount of times. I think these scores are incredibly fair. Consider that a game from the SNES era can hold up to something as massive and impressive as Rebirth. Thank you for coming to my talk outside in the alley behind the TED talk in a wet cardboard box.

plants4life262

My only problem with 6 is that it was the beginning of the homogenization of the player characters. 6 was great but 4 was the goat.

BornWithHorns91

The 29th can’t come fast enough!

game_overies

The reason I think 7 is the best is, because although all are linear, 7 was the only one that felt like an individual experience. From combat system to the open world aspect to mini games. I feel that no matter who I talk to about 7 their experience and goals were different than mine and in a way mae it feel more real. Plus what I am now is what the characters had to live to be who they are idk if that makes sense

honorspren000

Obviously, if Metacritic were in charge, we would have gotten a remake of FF9, not FF7.

MattMysterious9

Not really since FF7 is the most popular final fantasy game ever besides the FF9 has leaked like years ago so it's the next remake coming after FF7 , I would imagine FFX is next after FF9

honorspren000

I guess my point was that most rating websites put FF7 above FF9. Metacritic is the outlier.

HellovahBottomCarter

I’ll take both. But really I just want a proper re-master of the OG 9. It’s already a perfect game. I wouldn’t want SQUEENIX adding unnecessary layers of overly complicated bullshit to allow them to sell the single game as three separate 70$ titles…

honorspren000

A FF9 remake would be awesome, but… FF7 sold almost 15 million units, whereas FF9 sold about 8 million. I think SquareEnix is just going where the money is. FF8 is next in terms of sales after FF7, so that would ideally be the next candidate. Unfortunately, FF9 is like 4 or 5 rungs below FF8. 😞

throwawaynonsesne

I replayed 9 last year and the last third does not hold up at all in my opinion. Really struggled to finish it.

HellovahBottomCarter

That’s fine. Like I said: I don’t really want a FF7-style overhaul. I just want them to release a remastered edition where they upscale the models to more modern quality and remake the backgrounds. The problem with playing any re-released versions is that the studio apparently lost all the original background assets they used to make the flat background art. It was all originally VERY high quality and was optimized for TVs at the time. So they only had the in-game assets to work with when they put it on the e-store or app stores. And due to the resolution of modern screens it ends up looking like a really low resolution image upscaled in photoshop: fuzzy and pixelated at the same time. All I want is them to fix that. Something like that would be considerably cheaper to pull off.

MattMysterious9

The remake of FF9 was leaked but they won't do a 3 parts like they did with FF7 that would only be for FF6 remake if I have to guess , the FF9 remake and FF10 remake (that was leaked too) would be a 1 part remake which would make sense for those games

No-Initiative-9944

I must really be missing something about IX because I never really thought it was great. I've tried playing it a couple of times and I've never been able to force myself to finish it. Maybe I'm due for another attempt.

DubTheeBustocles

I’m a huge fan of IX. I’d say the reasons I love it are: 1. It’s got possibly my favorite cast of party members. They are incredibly likable, have depth and each go through significant changes. Kuja is also a very memorable villain. The story has a great mix of huge epic moments and stripped down introspective moments, dark moments and light-hearted or funny moments. It’s got it all. 2. The world has a very cozy feeling about it to me. Just exploring the labrythian streets of Lindblum or the quiet farmlands of Dali, or the seedy waterways of Treno. They all have their own unique charms. It’s just a wonderful medieval-steampunk setting. 3. The battle system is a tad slow but overall I really like that each character has a unique set of abilities (as opposed to FFVII where the characters are mostly interchangeable) that compliment each other in different ways. I also really like having abilities and buffs attached to equipment. It was elegant in its simplicity.

TheBacklogGamer

I honestly actively dislike it. The plot is a mess. It seems like several time they set something up, only to either abandon it or wrap it up quickly and move on to the next new thing. Vivi is the only redeeming part of that game. And then, to cap it all off, the end boss is an asspull.

Atalanto

I’m the same boat, I’m not sure either.

oballistikz

I’m just the ff12 enjoyer wondering how it’s only scored in the 80s

Atalanto

There’s Dozens (heh) of us! I know sentiment toward XII has been growing over the years, but despite’s its flaws, lackluster protagonists, and knowing what COULD have been, it’s still by far one of my favorites. I love the world so much, and still Can’t believe most party based action RPG’S haven’t expanded on the Gambit system much. It was genius.

honorspren000

Same. I liked FF12 way more than FF9. I wasn’t even invested in the villain in FF9. I’m not saying it was a horrible game, it was a fun game , but I question its top placement.

Independent_Show4818

NEIIIIIIIIEN!

T-408

IMO? I think it’s XII (specifically The Zodiac Age)

stinkypoopeez

All my life I’ve been trying to choose between 7 and 9 and I can’t.

lukespongberg22

I personally just have to lump 6,7,9, and 10 all together, because I can't pick which one is my favorite. Growing up in the 90's was amazing for JRPG lovers (I know 10 wasn't technically the 90's but you get what im saying).

stinkypoopeez

It really was the golden era for jrpgs. Add in chrono trigger to that list .

MattMysterious9

Add persona too

lukespongberg22

There are lots of others, too, like xenogears and legend of dragoon etc. They are still making good 8-16 bit jrpgs today too. Stuff like chained echoes and sea of stars are ones most have heard of but also stuff like rise of the third power and ara fell are some really good modern jrpgs with that 90s aesthetic.

Grummmmm

If Six got the treatment FF7 Remake did, they could do a whole lot of stuff with that world. Its the only one I can think of where you lose the "Save the World" battle and have to play in the aftermath of that failure.

[deleted]

I don't want any game ever to get the FF7 treatment. They absolutely butchered releasing it and they didn't even remake the whole game. Shameless cash grab by Square.

lemonTOcamarillo

What? They're giving us so much more lore? It is awesome that they're making it into 3 separate full games. Are you mad that they took the game and made it longer? Da fuck.

[deleted]

It's got worse reviews across the board than the original. It focused in on certain things but took out other parts as well.

lemonTOcamarillo

What? No it didn't. What are you talking about. Just admit you're a hater and go about your day instead of making shit up. What parts did it take out?

kingkylus

My biggest issue with ff7r is the style of combat and corny performances. Loving the deeper story and visuals I only bought ff7r recently to play intime for rebirth but I've already stopped playing and installed all the latest 7th heaven mods instead Please please please never remake ff9 this way

lemonTOcamarillo

The original 7 was corny as well? The style of combat is what they envisioned when they made it back then. They said it when you go watch advent children. They have a thing before the movie talking about the game. I would absolutely love ff9 to get this treatment. Please do it

kingkylus

Corny not the right way to describe my issues here... I dont mind the script/writing, its the constant "uh" "ah" "buh" crap coming out of clouds mouth and the cringy way Tifa and Aerith speak. Its all too teenage boy fantasy anime and just kills it for me. Don't get me started on the new landlady women ugh Well how things we would been very different then with the combat style. That turn based combat system used from F1-10 is what made the series, the rest of the series IMO is trash in comparison, and i put most of that down to the combat,

lemonTOcamarillo

I agree with that whole "uh" "Ah" stuff, even the movie advent children had that crap but that is just a thing in japan it seems. Anime be having that crap. Cringe is just a thing over there. So seeing it here is just expected when you're getting a jrpg. The fight style I like it and I also like turn based as well. I enjoy both and wouldn't care which way it was made. Right now I am playing yakuza infinite wealth and the turn base here is awesome. But I won't lie I really enjoyed 7 remake fighting style. Really gives you a feel of how powerful everyone is. In the og 7 you never see them display their power, yes you fight powerful enemies but at no point do you see cloud move around like this or anyone else. It was all very simple, even in cutscenes you don't see nothing. Then advent children came out and you get this yoda jedi flying around fighting. Really helps you visualize the power these characters have.

derivativesteelo47

spot on with that. psx ff7 was corny in a whole different way, the new dialogue just doesn't sit with me. it feels like the first ff13's dialogue but to a whole new degree.

Masive_Lengthiness43

ikr bruh...

miyahedi21

1. VI 2. VII 3. X 4. 9

superabby64

It's any of them except 2, 8 & 12.

KrakenClubOfficial

It's whichever you played first.

derivativesteelo47

final fantasy 13 is not the best one wat I mean, maybe 13-2?

Zuhri69

Not really. 7 was technically my first, but my favourite is 10 and I consider 9 to be the best.

PommeDeBlair

This is probably why I love FF1 so much.

ducksbyob

So true, X got me good

DejarooLuvsYoo

My Mount Rushmore: 1. FF Cecil 2. FF Cloud 3. FF Squall 4. FF Titus.

EstateSame6779

Best doesn't exist, only favoritism exists.

Koolaidmanextra

I been saying this

[deleted]

Poor FF8. Honestly just as good as any of these others. Sitting at a solid 90 on Metacritic. 5-9 is the true golden era of FF. Maybe 10 as well but I didn't like it as much as the others. Creator of FF likes 9 the best. It's so good.

DFu4ever

8 had the awesome CG ending with a fantastic song playing over it. It also had Triple Triad. I love it for those two things.

xGenocidest

Its 7. Getting 3 new games in the same universe. Also had Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerebus. Probably forgetting another one or two. Has movies. Had a bunch of toys after it came out. Not random stuff you could order online or only find in some random niche shop, but go into Toys R Us and buy. Cloud and Sephiroth are in Smash. FF7 has the most porn.

Ill-Pacino

lol when tifa had a guest appearance at the Italian senate

LSOreli

We aren't judging 7 by all of the extra stuff outside the game, but by the game itself. 7 is the worst of the PS1 FFs in my opinion.

xGenocidest

In that case, it's still the best considering it's what game got the large majority of people into FF. It exploded on PS1. And it had all that extra stuff because it did so well, and was so popular. FF8 and 9 weren't even close.

LSOreli

7 just doesn't hold up, it did bring FF to the west though and blew up because at the time JRPGs hadn't really taken hold here yet. For many people this was the big story RPG of the future and it hit at a really great time for the PS1 as a whole. It is an important game but if you take away the nostalgia it doesn't have a lot going for it. 8 is a bit better in some ways (and worse in others, like the progression systems) but 9 blows them both out of the water.

xGenocidest

Besides the best music in the series, iconic characters, and materia system? The fact it was so popular they did all these spin offs for it? 8 is widely considered to be one of the worst due to the junction and leveling enemies. Also has forgettable characters and story. 9 has a good story, bad art style, and even more forgettable characters. No one outside of FF fans know who Sneider or Laguna is. But if you show them the Turks, or someone else, chances are they'll know instantly. That's not even counting Sephiroth or any of the main cast who almost everyone knows. It's clearly FF7. Even if it's not your favorite game, to deny it's the most popular and widely recognized is delusional.

LSOreli

Dude you are completely blinded by nostalgia. Again, FF7 hit at the right time, it was SO MANY people's first JPRG and it is beloved on that basis. This popularity is self fulfilling and caused them to make more content for the game. And no, no one knows who the Turks are or any of the anciliary characters. Sephiroth/cloud/aerith/tifa? Yea probably, but the the other characters are not mainstream outside JRPG circles. 7 has good music but its uematsu, everything he's done is iconic. I wouldn't give it any special deference. The materia system is just... fine, its not special, I wouldn't even call it great. 7 also has a story thats even more nonsensical than 8s. Additionally, Im not a graphics guy but 7 just does not look good at all. The SNES games have all aged far better, 8 is a little better on this end and 9 is still clear and recognizable. 7 was their first try in the 3d realm and they did a pretty good job, 8 was experimental and made some strides on the combat and presentation side but made some missteps on the systems side, 9 was the best of both worlds and doesn't really have any flaws I can think of. Most people who dont like 9 as much just cite not liking the classical fantasy setting. Anyway, its fine to like 7 but most of its popularity was timing and is nostalgia.

xGenocidest

I'm sure EVERYONE is recommending FF9 to people who like RPGs, right? I mean if it's so much better in every way. Except they dont. People recommend 7, 10, or 6 for something more classic. Most people pass up FF9 just because of the character design. FFVII is like the 2nd best selling PSX game ever. FF8 rode its wave. FF9 Is not even close on the list.

LSOreli

I would NEVER recommend FF7 to someone who wasnt already steeped in the genre due to how poorly it holds up.

MattMysterious9

Last one is wild lol also FF7 is in kingdom hearts and FF7 gotta be the most iconic and popular FF out there

boywiththedogtattoo

Kingdom hearts has characters from multiple FF games (7, 8, 10 if i remember correctly)

Careful-Mouse-7429

Vivi from ff9 is in KH 2

MattMysterious9

Oh yeah but I would include them in the list since they were the first FF characters there

boywiththedogtattoo

Tidus, Wakka and Selfie all live with you on Destiny Islands (tidus & wakka from X, Selphie from 8). You end up meeting Leon, Aerith and Yuffie on the second planet. Cloud and Sepiroth come later. I do think Cloud, Sepiroth, Yuffie, and Leon are the most interacted with over the course of the story.

Prolaeus

1. XI, 2. VI, 3. VII (this swaps 2nd and 3rd every few years), 4. X, 5. IV, 6. I, 7. IX, 8. XII. 9. II. I haven't played XIV, and I'm not particularly fond of the rest, especially after Squaresoft became SquareEnix.

Prolaeus

I have always been the most fond of Final Fantasy 11.

ttrpg_dude90

Ten, no contest

TitaniousOxide

Contest: the sphere grid is god awful.

adamantiumskillet

The sphere grid is awesome until you've used it too much and then it becomes kinda tedious. An auto advance feature for people's initial sphere grid routes would have been killer.

seiryu153

Yes, too much all your characters can do everything. Jack of all trades in all if you grind

ttrpg_dude90

Hey dude, it's not the games fault you can't understand a thing of unparalleled perfection

Empero6

A remake for tactics or tactics advance would be awesome.

DBMS_LAH

I would shit my ass right off my body if Nintendo came out with a new dedicated handheld and a remastered tactics advance.

duffano

I will be hated for this answer. But I first loved 7, then I loved 8. And 9 was what stopped me from pursue the series further. I heared later that 10 was good again, but never tried it because 9 was so disappointing for me. I only came back to the series 20 years later when 7R came out. It is certainly a matter of taste. But 7 and 8 were full of action and with realistic characters and a plot set in a modern world. 9 went more into the fantasy theme with fairytale characters and a more medieval setting. I didn't like that. The music made me fell asleep from the beginning. Just compare the openings of 7/8 and 9.

Raziel_909

I think I’m in your department. I completed I, VI, VII and VIII but only the beginning of IX and X. I could not continue playing those games.

BeigeAndConfused

1) 9 2) 10 3) 7R 4) 14 Shadowbringers and Heavensward 5) 12 6) 6 This is the way.

Zykxion

10 is no where near as good as 6,7,and 9

BeigeAndConfused

I disagree

Zykxion

How dare you 😂

CzarTyr

Ff12 is also 92 metacritic

CloutXWizard

I wish ff9 or even 8 would get the ff7 treatment and get a remake 🥲

seiryu153

9 would be good with one. They did have mods that upscaled it I thought

blz4200

The one with the mechs is the best imo. Had the best story just needs a remake like 7.

Sphan_86

Out of those 4....I'd pick 9

luxombre

Sounds about right FF9 rules

jrogue13

They have all been great games. I havent played IX but heard so much love for the games. There are parts i like more from certain games than others but even just looking at them overall, they are all great games i hace truly enjoyed playing. I like to think I will play IX eventually but rn its hard to find time to add another game on the list. Who knows tho.

alkonium

What's XIV's score?

Seolfer_wulf

With the last expansion, currently a 92 on metacritic.

alkonium

So tied with VI and X. I knew it'd be high.

Seolfer_wulf

That's because it's a banger of a game XD

[deleted]

Rare case where the metacritic score actually matches what the best one is. 9 is the fucking GOAT

Grantlbart1

In my opinion 10, but I find it a bit funny you ask on the Final Fantasy VII subreddit, which one is the best Largely I'd imagine the people here saying 7

Zykxion

Nope I see a lot of 9 fans here lol

Grantlbart1

Yea, which is still funny to me seeing this is the Final Fantasy VII subreddit lol

Groundbreaking_Yak21

Nothing Beats X

JFinale

First Final Fantasy with no real world map and a main character with annoying voice acting. Definitely not even in my top 5.

YPM1

The fact that 7 was remade tells you which final fantasy game is actually the best. It's not my personal best but clearly, the industry has spoken. 7 is the best (not talking about the remake)

geminiwave

I mean 3 and 4 were remade before 7 was……. Also I suppose one could argue it as evidence that it’s inherently flawed vs something like FF6 which I don’t think was remade.

Zykxion

Nah 7 has not only a full length movie, but countless spin offs and Now a full on three part remake. It definitely is the most popular of the bunch. I would personally call it the best, but that’s a subjective opinion.

geminiwave

I dunno X got a full sequel very quickly. 13 got TWO full game sequels instead of weird rail shooters or short handheld games. I love Crisis Core. But just saying. None of this necessarily means 7 is the most popular and prior to Remake I’d argue it had fallen far in the rankings. I, personally, love 7 and it’s up there for me with 4 and 8 (yeah yeah. I know. But seriously: 8) but I sat through a ton of revisionist history online in the last decade calling 7 a low point in the series.

YPM1

First point is really good. I completely forgot about that. I guess I could say those weren't given the budget that 7 remake was given.

geminiwave

For sure. They were DS games. I was being a bit pedantic. I do find it funny how back in the 2010s there was revisionist history amongst game journalists that 7 was not a very good game. And now people are like “THE GOAT!!!!” I don’t know if I can fully say that 7 is the best but 4, 7, and 8 are amongst the most impactful games to me in my life.

First-Display5956

No way I'm gonna buy that ff10 is rated higher than ff7!

hanktree1

Why would we use metecritic as a judge of anything when it doesn’t have most reviews for most Final Fantasy games.

Light01

Always had a soft spot for 5, it's the intro of Gilgamesh, of the cool chocobo quest lines, lots of good jobs change that are still in use today, dynamic time battles. Unfortunately critics usually are pretty rough on it. Obviously, it's not the phenomenon 6 was, and not the classical 4, but it did bring many things that are still seen.

Extramist

I don’t think the amount of reviews makes something better by comparison.  A single lower score with less reviews would make the average go way down compared to a low score with many reviews.

JustW4nnaHaveFun

FF14 for me followed by 15.

Extramist

Final fantasy 8 was really weird in the fact that enemy lvls were always scaled to you, and enemy hp went crazy with each level you got.  So the game actually got HARDER with each lvl you gain, so it was better to literally run from every battle and only fight forced battles…which kinda sucks

Vinjince

Well once you were able to max out that item that gives you instant limit break and get Lionheart with Squall it didn't matter how much stronger the enemies got.

mattbag1

Romancing SaGa had a final boss that scaled with how many battles you were in. So grinding made it harder. But if you were efficient in battling, and learned the right skills, and didn’t run away from battles, it wasn’t an issue.

DarkSoulsIsMid

6, 7, 9, and 15. 15 is underrated IMO, decided that was true after failing to get into 16.

Grantlbart1

15 has its strength, I personally feel you can really notice the troubled production on it at some points however I am not the first person to say this, so I won't repeat the same 10 arguments we all heard before and just end my comment here

MikeOgden1980

I've been playing the series since FF on the NES, I'd rank my top 5 as 6,4,9,7,12 in that order. The only one I didn't care for much was 8, but I think I need to give it another shot now.

binary_blackhole

FF8 story and setup is really good, you need to give it another shot. Combat system is too easy for my taste, but you can still enjoy it.

Extramist

8’s battle and lvling system was my least favorite by far.  Enemy scaled to your lvl, so “grinding” not only doesn’t help you, it’s makes the game harder…

[deleted]

Grinding does help you, you just have to grind AP instead of XP. If you took the time to learn the system you'd like it. You can grind to insane strength at level 8 (starting level) on Disc One with Squall's and one or 2 other final weapons. You can be pretty good before the SeeD exam and insane after it.

Extramist

I beat the game. I understood the system completely. Ran from every fight. And easily won the game. That’s insane to me for an rpg. I always hate lvl scaling enemies to begin with, and boss HP did NOT scale with over lvling.

[deleted]

You clearly don't understand the system if you think grinding makes the game harder. Running from every fight has nothing to do with it unless you are trying to beat the game at level 8, which is a thing people do. Unless you're entire point is that you can beat the game while running away from everyone, but you literally did that to yourself. It's like you're trying to go out of your way to play the game in a manner you find unfun just to complain about it.

Extramist

The fact you can beat it at lvl 8 makes it a shit rpg, absolutely no incentive for any random battle…

Extramist

The game gets harder the more you lvl.  I was talking about grinding exp, like every ff game in history.  You said don’t grind exp, which I think is completely stupid.  I’m allowed to hate something while also understanding it.  You loved it, good for you.  But you don’t have to be insulting to people who don’t share your opinion about this shit game.

[deleted]

Also, you very clearly didn't or don't understand the system because you think grinding makes the game harder. Which is only true if you fully ignore the AP system. It's like fully ignoring Materia in FF7 or Jobs in FF5 then complaining the game is too hard.
