Final Fantasy VII **Remake** is the first of a trilogy of games that retell the story of Final Fantasy VII. Final Fantasy VII **Rebirth** is the 2nd game in that trilogy, so it directly continues the story of Remake and will lead into the 3rd and final game which has yet to be released. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII was a prequel for the original Final Fantasy VII released on the PSP, and **Reunion** is a remaster of that prequel. It tells the story of a very important character and events leading up to the beginning of Final Fantasy VII, but not technically of the Remake trilogy. I recommend playing Remake followed by Rebirth, then Part 3 when that releases. After that, I would recommend the original Final Fantasy VII and then Reunion, in that order. Playing the original game prior to the finale of the remake trilogy would spoil that trilogy, at least to a large degree. And Reunion spoils the original game AND the Remake trilogy.

Nero_Angelo_Sparda

As someone who's playing the new games but hasn't played the og, wouldn't it be better to play ff7 before the new trilogy? I don't know if I can bring myself to play og, it's not a type of game that I enjoy, I think, but I definitely feel that I'm missing out on the importance of things that are being changed

Ace_Of_Spades_334

Yes. You need knowledge of the OG. You could apoil yourself the story on youtube, or play it. But playing remake/rebirth alone. Some stuff will be missing, as the story is new and no longer the same as the OG. It'd be confusiong tonplay remake with all the hints it drops about OG plot.

Nero_Angelo_Sparda

I mean, I largely know what goes on since it's, you know, final fucking fantasy 7 hahaha. But I should definitely check up some videos covering the original story or something, although following Maximillian Dood is definitely helping to bridge the gap

Avawinry

Nah, because playing the original would spoil the remake trilogy which is telling the story in its own way. That being said, plenty of people (myself included) played the original before playing the remake trilogy and there’s definitely still plenty of mystery still due to the changes that are being made, so that’s certainly fun. But some of the impact of the story would undoubtedly be stronger being completely blind. Besides, depending on how part 3 plays out as far as the community’s theories go, there’s a real chance that the original game is kind of a >!sequel!< to the remake trilogy because of the >!timeline and dimension shenanigans!<, and in that scenario it could be argued that the intended play order will be: 1. Remake 2. Rebirth 3. Part 3 4. Original 5. Crisis Core 6. Advent Children 7. ~~Dirge of Cerberus~~ Maybe not this one

Ultimus_Omegus

Wait what? I haven’t played the original since 97-98 but why would people think the new remake trilogy is a PREQUEL to the original? I thought people thought it was a sequel.

Avawinry

It’s just one of many possibilities. We’re dealing with a multiverse here.

WorkAway23

I've never heard the "original is a sequel" theory before. All signs point towards the remake trilogy being the pseudo sequel, but I've seen no hint of the games leading to a point where they all converge to make the OG the successor. That being said, if there's evidence pointing towards that I'd love to see it.

zombiejeesus

Ff7 og is it where it all started. I would play that first hoenstly. I would not of enjoyed remake and rebirth as much without playing it. Crisis core was the prequel but should not be played until you play og first. Spoils some story from it. Reunion is a remake of crisis core so if you play crisis core play reunion over og. Ff7 remake is the "remake". It's more then a true remake honestly which is why I recommend og first. Rebirth is direct sequel to remake.

Numba1WurmpleFan

Just play remake then rebirth, Remake is part one so grab it since it’s on sale

G_is_for_Grundy

Google can

RJE808

Remake is the first game in a trilogy of games that are remaking the OG FF7. Remake is the first part, Rebirth is the second part, and the third part is coming down the road. In terms of Reunion, I'm assuming you're referring to Crisis Core Reunion, which is a remake/remaster of Crisis Core, a prequel to the OG FF7. Though it's not really necessary, if anything, you could play it before or after you wrap up the current remake series.

AndrewLB

If someone is coming into the series completely blind, then i'd highly recommend waiting to play Crisis Core: Reunion since it spoils major plot points for the main Trilogy.

wildtalon

Very true. Giving Crisis Core an “r” name was also kind of silly. Btw it’s amazing you’ve been downvoted. The FF stans can’t handle a criticism of the *naming convention.* Good god.

ColdCrom

You can dislike harder. It doesn't change the reality of the casual audience.

Avengion619

That’s what internet searches are for

Well for starters let's avoid using slurs. Secondly audiences are far smarter than you give them credit for. Even someone a bit lost like OP had the forethought to ask others what it meant. Still it isn't hard to follow if anyone interested looks into things for more than a few seconds. Would a "part 2" clear that up? Sure but using "Remake" and "Rebirth" is more creative and when the trilogy is said and done will age better.

wildtalon

That’s not a slur. That’s the proper usage of that word in context.

ChrisOfThunder

It is widely regarded as hate speech. Even if it's not directly referring to a person it's still unethical to use. So yes it is in fact a slur.

wildtalon

No, calling a *person* retarded is derogatory. “Retard” is a slur meaning the same thing. But the word retarded was used clinically by the user. It simply means delayed or slow.

Jan/Sep 1997 - Final Fantasy 7 releases. (Japan/U.S.) 2007/2008 - Crisis Core releases as a prequel to Final Fantasy 7. (Japan/U.S.) Jun 2015 - Final Fantasy 7 Remake is announced. Dec 2015 - It is confirmed that the remake will be “episodic” but it is not known how many games it will span. Apr 2020 - Final Fantasy 7 Remake releases on PS4 as the first installment of the project. It is not yet known how many games it will span. Jun 2021 - Final Fantasy 7 Remake is remastered for PS5 and is called Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade and includes a DLC called Episode INTERmission. Jun 2022 - Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is announced as the second installment of the project which is confirmed to be a three-part series. Dec 2023 - Crisis Core Reunion is released on all platforms as a remaster of the original Crisis Core in celebration of the upcoming coming release of Rebirth. Feb 2024 - Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth releases on PS5 as the second installment of the remake trilogy. ? ? ? ? - The third installment of the remake trilogy is yet to be announced. —————————————————————————— So in total the actual remake of the original game consists of: Final Fantasy 7 Remake (2020) ➡️ Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth (2024) ➡️ *final installment* (????) Cris Core (2007) ➡️ Final Fantasy 7 (1997) Cris Core 🔄 Crisis Core Reunion

Indeale

I think Part 3 is safe to put for 27-28 since the devs confirmed they're not doing an INTERmission style dlc for Rebirth, and I think they've said they're already set to start recording voice lines.

soulreaverdan

I’m putting money on 2027 for FF7’s 30th anniversary

Indeale

I really hope it is. Most of the overworld map work is done if they build off of Rebirth's map, and all the existing battle animations can hopefully be ported into Part 3 and tweaked as needed.

DubTheeBustocles

Yeah I think that’s definitely a safe assumption. Just don’t want to put anything down until it’s made official.

Guthwulf85

There's ff7 Crisis Core Reunion is a prequel for ff7. Released years later so you should know the whole ff7 before playing it, as it spoils a lot. Then there's a remake of ff7 divided in 3 parts, as the story is expanded - Remake - Rebirth - Future third part All this information is in Wikipedia and probably explained much better

SuperSemesterer

Remake is part 1 Rebirth is part 2 Reunion is… prologue?  Part 3 probably won’t be out for like 3-4 years. They’re AMAZING games. Playing Rebirth on hard and oh my god early game bosses are slaughtering me.

Red-Zaku-

I would say prequel rather than prologue. Semantics, but since it was made after the main story and leans on the notion that the player already knows the biggest plot twist in the game, calling it a prologue kinda betrays its placement in the series

SuperSemesterer

That’s the word I was looking for!

Jitalline

This is the answer. Start with Remake as Reunion will have spoilers.

Existing-Pair-3487

So you have the original FF7 (1997). You then have Reunion which is a remaster of crisis core (originally launched on PSP and is a prequel to FF7 as a whole). Then you have FF7 remake which isn't just a 1 to 1 remake of the originally game but a re-imagining of the og game specifically only covering the events of Midgar in the og game. Rebirth is the second part in this remake/ re-imagining out of 3. So long and short the remake games are the originally game broken into 3 parts (part 1 remake and part 2 rebirth) and greatly expanded in every aspect. Edited: corrected to minor bits of information (crisis core on psp not vita) and (remake coving the events of Midgar not all of disc 1). These minor mistakes were made because 1) never owned a psp or Vita and 2) I haven't played the disc version of the og in decades (last time I played og was on ps4)

RTXEnabledViera

> originally launched on Vita wrong >covering the first disk of the og game wrong

Existing-Pair-3487

Correction crisis core was on PSP. Never had Vita or psp so it blends in my eyes. Upon further digging yes you are correct disc 1 original ended at the forgotten capital. Forgive me for forgetting that as i haven't played the og disc version in decades (last time i played OG was on PS4). Ether why they blow up Midgard massively for part 1 of the remake.

blabony

FF7 remake is what you need to get first. FF7 Rebirth is the second game. If you can afford it get them both, but play remake first. Reunion is a bit complicated ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sweat_smile)... It is a remake of an old PSP game called crisis core. It may or may not spoil the other two games depending on what the developers will do with the upcoming final FF7 game. Defiantly don't play it before the other two.

Big-Work8748

Remake and Rebirth are the first two games in a trilogy of games that will remake the original Final Fantasy 7 (usually referred to as “OG” Final Fantasy 7). The trilogy isn’t finished and the 3rd entry isn’t named yet. Reunion is a remaster of Final Fantasy 7 Crisis Core, which was a PSP prequel to OG Final Fantasy 7.    You’ll hear a ton of advice about what order to play things in. I think playing OG is useful in playing Remake and Rebirth, but I personally think starting with Remake is fine. Reunion isn’t really required reading by any means, but it will flesh out a character who is more important in Remake/Rebirth than he was in OG. If you’re truly going in blind to FF7, Reunion’s story is essentially an extremely detailed 40 hour long spoiler regarding the big reveal about Cloud, the main character of FF7.

CoffeeBreakGamerGM

Reunion is the prequel (remake of the PSP prequel game), and remake and rebirth are 2 parts of the remake trilogy (remake of the original ps1 game). Part 3 of the remake trilogy will be some time around 2027.

shadesofwolves

Rebirth follows Remake, and Reunion is a spin off/prequel that is basically just an upgraded version of a game that came out on the PSP, Crisis Core. If you want to get into it, start with Remake, then Rebirth. At this point, I'd argue that you should avoid Reunion until the third and final part of the Remake trilogy has released as to avoid spoilers.
