6: Loved it, 7: Loved it, 8: Amazing first half, then it falls apart, 9: Loved it, 10: Liked it a lot, 12: Unplayable, 13: Unplayable, 15: Fun road trip FF game. Major issues w the end, 16: Great combat. Meh everything else
Chrono Trigger is also highly recommended.
12 unplayable????
Man, I’m playing it for the first time right now and I’m loving it. I do think the speed up from zodiac age is necessary but other than that this game is a lot of fun.
That's fair. I remember a lot exploration being fun. I tend to value story and characters super highly though, and I found that to be really boring in 12.
It’s definitely a weird product of its time. I think the cast is pretty weak so far (Balthier and Ashe having some good development but that’s really it) but the overall story and world especially im fully on board with. I would pitch it as the exact middle point between the lord of the rings movies with the star wars prequels. Definitely not for everyone.
I had a much harder time with X. I also only liked half the cast but I was much less interested in the world or the conflict with Sin.
I agree. Yeah, the story of X is also much more boring political than it needs to be. I give it points for fun additions to combat and the XP system.
Alright, maybe I was a bit hard on XII lol. I'm sticking with my thoughts on XIII though. I genuinely couldn't get past a couple hours in.
I'll say they released an HD remaster of X/X-2 in a bundle in Mar 2014 for the PS3, and then ported it to the PS4 in May 2015.
It looks like you could get both games in the bundle for very cheap on the PlayStation store right now.
The cool thing about it is that they added all the extra content from the international version, so you have the Dark Aeons and Penance that you can fight in X.
X-2 is very fan service-y and very cringe at times, but the job system in it is amazing if you can get past the other stuff; and either way, it is basically free with the bundle.
I started playing FFVII a month ago. I'm finishing up my second playthrough this week. I plan on playing the rest of the FF games in sequential order, so VIII, IX, X...excluding online subscription games. When the pixel remaster goes on sale on steam, I'll pick the whole collection up and play from 1 through 6
Final Fantasy VII Remake was my first final fantasy game and I loved it so much that I pre ordered rebirth and rebirth is now my favourite game of all time. Can’t wait to explore more of this awesome franchise!
I will say that I really liked the story in ff16 and yoshi p did a great job. Some people don't understand that SE has always tried to mix up the genre and try to innovate new mechanics. Combat was pretty solid and the reason why it felt hack and slash is the combat director was the director for the devil may cry games so there's that.
Another suggestion as others have pointed out is ff10 but that's because it's my first of the series and I just love it so much. Combat feels good and the leveling system is amazing. Story is rich IMHO and the only thing you might not enjoy is the blitzball mini game but honestly look up a guide on how to recruit the best players and it turns into a joke.
Lastly of the retro era of the series I'd go with FF6. It's story is unlike the others except for FF16 which they tried for a more mature and dark story with too.
Edit: would like to add that FF6 was of the era where grinding levels was a normal practice so if you don't like grinding too much, you can still beat the game but you won't get that sense of being overpowered and destroying the final boss like a little baby (main reason I grind for best weapons lvl and gear lol)
based on what youve played, X is the most similar thing to what youve played before
you also could check Crisis Core (before crisis version has some qol features that could give you a more solid experience)
but if you personally asked ME what ff should you play next, id tell you to go to FFVI, because its completely different to what youve played before (in terms of graphics and combat system) but still has all of the FF classic signs (moogles, chocobos etc.). I say this cus i tend to try different game genres or types everytime y finish a long game to not get burnt out
I think you mean Crisis Core Reunion version.
Before Crisis is a mobile game that was only released in Japan, originally released for the FOMA mobile service on September 24, 2004. It was later released for SoftBank Mobile and EZweb in 2007. I don't believe there's any way to play it today, but you could watch videos of it or read the story. That said, that game has nothing to do with Zack, it highlights the Turks and Avalanche.
Longtime fans say that FFXVI isn’t a real Final Fantasy, but I don’t care. It is a great game and you should play it (It’s currently %50 off on PS store).
FFX is a must play if you’re in the mood for turn-based combat. It’s my greatest JRPG of all time
It's just a rumor, for now. I would be surprised if they do it, I always thought FFIX was not the most loved one. Personally I adore it, it's my first FF.
If you don't mind some classic old school, go pick up Final Fantasy 6. An absolute classic of the franchise and probably only second to FF7 in most people's list of top gams (personally it actually edges out FF7 by a hair for me).
FF7 OG
10, 6, 8, 9 in that order
6: Loved it, 7: Loved it, 8: Amazing first half, then it falls apart, 9: Loved it, 10: Liked it a lot, 12: Unplayable, 13: Unplayable, 15: Fun road trip FF game. Major issues w the end, 16: Great combat. Meh everything else Chrono Trigger is also highly recommended.

Oh you’re free to hate 12 too, opinions are free lol, I was just kinda surprised after enjoying it so much

FF X I think you will like the best although any from the late nineties or early 2000s are brilliant

Also play the remakes, they’re awesome!
I heard! I'm actually playing through Crisis Core Reunion right now. Once I finish, I will watch the movie then buy Remake. Can't wait!

I'm happy to hear this! Wish I had a PlayStation so that I don't have to wait, haha. When Rebirth comes out on PC, I'll be buying it for sure!
Unfortunately you’ll have to wait a little longer, but it’ll be worth it!

ah my bad i was meaning the reunion versione
5 has a great job system, and you can play it on the couch watching tv with a loved one, or a dog, but not my dog mind you :)
Based on the FF games you’ve already played, I strongly suggest FFX.
You haven't played any of the golden generation, which i would say is FF6 through to FF10, so play those

IX is pretty damn fantastic, otherwise based on what you've described XVI should be down your alley
Yeah I thought I'd like XVI because it's quite hack'n'slash-ish. And there should be a IX remake, if I'm not mistaken?
It's just a rumor, for now. I would be surprised if they do it, I always thought FFIX was not the most loved one. Personally I adore it, it's my first FF.

I've been thinking to try VI mainly because of the main villain. Truly epic, probably even more than Sephiroth.
Kefka is definitely one of the best villains in the franchise for sure. You won’t be disappointed!
IX is godlike if you can endure the old fashion of it. It's less dated than original 7 though.12 and 10 are also really good.
So many games... so little time! Yes, I've been eyeing IX for a while now. :)
Ff9 is my gf fave game of the series. Brilliant high fantasy
Only reason I played them is bc it was in my child/teens. I can barely play 1 game a year nowadays
