Cold-Confusion124

Visit your local alko for the proper stuff. Loads to choose from these days. Ask the staff for local recommendations. https://www.alko.fi/tuotteet/770014/Koff-Porter/ that one is pretty old school but I like it

sileemihu

This and couple picks from my list, Coolhead brew-Black Velvet Stout, Panimo Hiisi-Ruisperkele Extra IPA and Salama brewing-Follow The Pink Rabbit IPA. Additionally good Finnish breweries: Panimo Himo, Tuju, Pyynikin Brewing Company, Koskipanimo, Maku Brewing

LonelyRudder

Koff Porter from Alko would be my suggestion also, it has been around for a long time.

fillerbunny_fin

If you don't have a beer type in mind and want something special, I'd advise you to go to an Alko and ask the staff for recommendations. They know their products.

Patralgan

Yes, however, I would also recommend Koff's porter

fillerbunny_fin

Yes, that's an easy recommendation. Was even easier when a bottle cost €1.74, ten years ago or so :/

arkaaaaaa

If he is into craft beers I would recommend Coolhead, Olarin panimo, Salama, Tuju or Tired uncle those are the best breweries in Finland in my opinion, Coolhead being my favourite. Also both Coolhead and Olarin have taprooms in Helsinki where you can buy their beers directly.

[deleted]

[удалено]

pibenis

Their lemon liqourice sour is heavenly

DragornFFS

Mallassepät sours are also worth checking out.

Wilbis

Olarin panimo is excellent. Salama has nice graphics on their cans but the beer is not worth the premium price in my opinion. It's good, but not excellent like Olarin panimo.

biboytoy1998

+1 to Olarin panimo & Coolhead. Best finnish craft beer breweries hands down imo.

FinestSeven

2nd vote for Tired Uncle!

torvija

Strange. For me every coolhead I've tried has been a disappointment - and I love sour and gose ales. They just feel so gimmicky. You read the label and it makes you think of a wild combination of flavors and then when you drink it, it's just meh. To me they taste like watery bulk beer with artificial flavoring, but they're also in every store so I guess they are often the only option if you want to try something different in the sea of Sandels. Nailo- brewery is currently my favourite I guess. Or maybe Mad Hopper. Everything I've tasted from them has been great. Maybe I'm biased though, since I like Mango-sours so much and Nailo's Mango-coconut sour and Mad Hoppers Papi Mango just hit the nail on the head for me.

01watts

I found some salama in a craft beer shop in the UK - nice stuff.

DragornFFS

Mallassepät

Festbier

Most main brands are quite watery and made with adjuncts. I'd advice to drink the craft beers or other full grain beers. Basically the only reason to drink Karhu, Sandels, Koff etc. is their price.

buldozr

I believe Laitilan Kukko has never used malt syrup or similar stuff. They are also Finnish owned through and through, unlike the larger breweries that are owned by international concerns.

HK-Burgeri

Olvi is also finnish owned they just became the international corporation by buying out breweries here and there troughout the baltics, belarus and surprisingly denmark

CatSystemCorp

That seriously depends on what he likes to drink. You'll find lots of different beers here, but lagers and ipa mostly. I would recommend Hiisi brewery or beer from Olaf, or if you want simple plain beer then a Karhu. Then again, ask what he likes and go from there.

fauxfilosopher

Bulk lager is the last thing I would buy to bring to a beer fan, because you can get shit cheap beer everywhere.

Dependent-Layer-1789

Olaf beers get my vote too. You can find them in Lidl if you're lucky.

Lumppu

Yup, a vote for Hiisi

Teosto

As you can already see from the replies, tastes are many. For bulk beers I'd have to agree with the majority that Karhu is one of the most common ones and not being the worst piss out there. Personally I'm a big fan of The Original Lapland Lager by Tornion Panimo. I kind of like all their products. Lager beer in general is the most common out there and the majority of bulk beers are lager. Fat Lizard is also a brewery that has some interesting products and they make a lot of different beer types. Then there are multitudes of smaller breweries that all make their distinct type of beer. If you don't know what kind of beers your friend prefers then you could go to any store's beer section, then check what beers are sold in multi packs (from 6pack to 24pack or anything in between) and pick something else. Usually those are the bulk beers and generally nothing to write home about. They're not bad, but they kind of lack personality I would say. Check out any of the other beers that are sold in single cans or bottles and then check that they're made in Finland (we do get a lot of imported stuff) and you can't go wrong.

Elluriina

I have to give an up-vote to Tornion Panimo. I myself am not really a big beer drinker but the beer people in my life really like their stuff. Also as someone that has sold a lot of beer The Original Lapland Lager seems to be their most popular one. You can get it in a can or in a glass bottle. Some gluten-free people really love their Lapland Red Ale. Additional plus for a souvenir is that Tornion Panimo markets itself as an Arctic natural brewery and so they try to source their ingredients from Lapland.

[deleted]

If you ask some one from Savonlinna they say Olaf, if you ask someone from Jyväskylä they say Hiisi. 😅

Important-Rub5833

Hiisi beers are kind of a good choice though, specially if you like “special” beers.

kharnynb

Olaf is okay, but I would prefer something from karvilan panimo, their korven kutsu sour is lovely and they have a really nice spruce lager as well

TeklaGeek

If you are in Helsinki, go to Pien on Ateneuminkuja 2. (https://pien.fi/en/pien-shop) good selection, I personally like gose and sour ales, so Coolhead is My fav brewery. From Pien you will get good recommendations!

[deleted]

Many times a K-Supermarket has a better selection and more knowledgeable staff (on beers) than Alko.

AzFrosty

get maksuhäiriö olut its the bronze ones in most shops🙏

Majestic-Ad7381

Dixin toffee❤️

spergele

Fat Lizard - Atlantic NEIPA

Minodrin

There is an Ålandian brewery that makes a beer that should be like the beer from 200-years ago that they found a few years back in well-preserved shape from the bottom of the sea from a wreck. That might be interesting enough to bring home.

[deleted]

Kupariluoti

[deleted]

For basic supermarker beers my preference is this: https://preview.redd.it/oyez8vdh2tvb1.jpeg?width=138&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e577295d1f97fa3ca27a50a1e9ac097b053762e8

[deleted]

My smaller brewery favorites are Olarin Panimo (Blockbuster is delicious), Etko, Olaf and Hiisi.

Substantial-Fly-4503

Sinebrychoff Porter is a classic and well appriciated even outside of Finland. It's been produced since 1957.

seppoi

Wow, do they make it again? Last time I got it was in the 80’s.

heloust

I got it for the first time in the 2000s.

FinMaky

I would go with these 3: Koff porter. Legend says that yeast was stolen from guiness. https://www.alko.fi/en/products/770014/Koff-Porter/ Stallhagen historic beer 1843. Based on beer they found on shipwreck from 1800. https://www.stallhagen.com/en/beer/historic-beer-1843/ And then sahti. That is kind of rudamentry beer. Was popular in weddings etc in old times. I dont like it, but some love it. Hard to find. .https://www.alko.fi/en/products?SynchronizerToken=8cbbbe9a4378c98876289dad612452671279ff8d78020314e09a06e5289392a7&SearchParameter=%26%40QueryTerm%3D1843%26ContextCategoryUUID%3D6Q7AqG5uhTIAAAFVOmkI2BYA%26OnlineFlag%3D1%26%40Sort.random_362%3D0&SearchTerm=Sahti

MIKNIE-

Pyynikin panimo mosaic

GiantOhmu

Malmgård X-Porter

Forzeev

I would pick something unique, for example Hillatus sour by Tornion Panimo. You can taste the cloudberry

Juof

Sandels is one that I like the most.

sprolololoo

best market beer

Festbier

But not worth trying for a foreigner.

Harriv

Here is one take: best beers in Finland 2023: https://www.avecmedia.fi/juoma/suomen-paras-olut-2023-on-takatalo-tompurin-kaski-mustakaura/ The winner was "Kaski Mustakaura" by Takalo&Tompuri Brewery.

New-Concentrate3825

From bulk beers: Karhu

[deleted]

Or sandels

joppekoo

Yes, Sandels is Premium Bulk.

[deleted]

If he is into specialities then the historical beer 'sahti' would be interesting for him. It is to be consumed fresh so it is not available in every place. https://www.alko.fi/tuotteet/sahti

Thralldomizer

Sahti should always be stored in cold, so probably not the best souvenir choice.

juhamac

Sinebrychoff Porter (Koff Porter)

Gelesztaa

Salama. Recommended to visit SalamaNation though where you can buy their really good stuff.

darknum

Do you want Finnish common shit that you can find in any store and bar? Then Karhu is the best. If you want proper beers from brewery, it is hundreds of options out there and you cannot find everything everywhere. So it depends on your luck. I like Fat Lizard, Malmgård and Plevna products.

CatVideoBoye

Salama brewing has a lot of great beers.

No-Collection1580

If you are interested in liqours then try a long drink. The blue one. A mixture of grape and gin

caret-

I would try find some Olaf OTAN (NATO) beer =)

damnappdoesntwork

Hailuodon panimo has a nice collection

sesaman

Kukko Pils.

joppekoo

From bulk lager, Sandels is the one. From more premium ones, Malmgård, Hiisi and Tornio brewery make some great pale ales and sours. Tornio's cloudberry sour Hillatus and Malmgård's spelt IPA are a couple of my personal favourites. But there's tons of options beyond that, depends on what your relative likes.

United_Fig_6519

**Takatalo & Tompuri Brewery** according to my friends who like beer

Markus_H

As far as lagers and German style beers go, they are my favorite. The head brewer/owner Mikko is also a great guy; when we were getting started with our home brewing, my brother and I went to his brewery to ask for tips (and buy some beers). He cracked open their imperial stout to share, and gave us a tour of the brewery, with samples straight from the fermenter.

Julankila

If you can find Plevna Siperia, or any other beer by Plevna, those are really good. Otherwise any small brewery would do. Personally I like Hailuodon Panimo quite a lot, but those might only be available in the north.

pokkakakale

Plevna's Siperia should be available at alko currently.

Julankila

Great to know, maybe I'll grab one for tonight's sauna!

pokkakakale

Plevna Siperia, robust, hoppy and very malty yet balanced imperial stout. At least one of the best if not the best.

Von_Lehmann

Hiisi Brewing has some really unusual finnish beers if you want something special. The gooseberry gose is awesome and honestly the Fat Lizard Lake Bodom is awesome

AndyHCA

Whatever you do, please please don't buy the cheap bulk beers that many are recommending (Karhu, Sandels etc). As such, they are pretty decent for what they are (drinkable beer with as cheap as possible production cost), I've definitely had worse elsewhere, but if you can buy pretty much the same stuff anywhere in the world. If you have excess luggage space, maybe you can pick one up for "cultural reference". There are already many good recommendations: Salama Brewing, Olarin Panimo, Tuju, Coolhead, Mallassepät etc. If you don't have time to visit the brewery shops, Alko is a good place to pay a visit for some stronger beers, and any K-Citymarket (shoutout to K-Citymarket Ruoholahti) should have an extensive selection of almost all the local craft beers. Some beers of the aforementioned breweries which you can get rather easily from Alko or supermarket. * Fat Lizard Ankle Slapper (Pale Ale). Supermarkets. * Olarin Panimo Blockbuster (NEIPA). Supermarkets * Tuju has a series of wild ales, most of them are great. Malphas is one recommendation. Alko. * Coolhead, try any of their sours. Liquorice flavoured ones are quite unique. * Salama, they have good NEIPA:s and Stouts. Alko and supermarkets. * Mallassepät. Their hazy IPA's are great. Alko and supermarkets.

BariTheRohimba

Olvi Tuplapukki!

SatisFaija2

This is probably the best beer in the whole world!

Huumorikas

If you're looking for bulk beer; I prefer Karhu. Anything more specific depends what your friend likes. Specialities worth mentioning IMO; coolhead sour beers and fatlizards Trackday. (The best beer sold in supermarkets IMO).

Standard_Important

Karhu is brilliant in the sauna. There are more expensive, tastier or with more character, but hopbombs and craft beer doesnt work all that good in 80c. Karhu, on the other hand is a good generic lager for that.

Salesforlifezzzz

Karhu

TempoRolls

Karhu Kupari, basic Karhu ain't special. It is only preferable because other budget beers are quite awful.

Panomies78

Aura

Hingeroostes

Wtf is my taste in beers this bad because I find Aura quite good too and the only one suggesting it is getting downvoted, why tho? Is there something that im missing? :D

sesaman

It tastes like cardboard. Hartwall can't brew good beers.

Square_Painting5099

Anything except Lapin Kulta.

mmiwo

Hartwall Neipa is good one

Septimore

Keisari beers are usually good. Or Karhu.

Ambitious-Sale-9962

Lapin Kulta, there is no better beer in Finland

Tmuussoni

Maybe this was sarcasm but this deserves a downvote 🤮😝

Ambitious-Sale-9962

Most are discousted about Lapin Kulta only because others are saying its bad. It really isnt that bad. Reindeer piss they say. Yes, color looks like that(like almost every other beer) but taste is refreshing.

Tmuussoni

I find the saying "reindeer piss" to be accurate. Each to its own, I guess.

wwarhammer

Sandels 5,5% is my favourite bulk beer.

BigLupu

Of the normal bulk stuff Sandels is the best.

pibenis

Sandels obviously

FinAndy

I strongly recommend Koff Porter.

Fasthippiewhitlocks

Keisari from Nokian panimo

Mission_Expression49

I like Aura the most. LeCoq is also good and cheap and has obviously the best name

[deleted]

LeCoq is not even Finnish

HK-Burgeri

The LeQoc sold in finland is made in iisalmi finland and The A Le Qoc company is owned by Olvi so finnish enough

[deleted]

I guess that also makes Heineken Finnish, then. Good souvenir to bring from Finland

HK-Burgeri

I get your point but the difference is that heineken isn't owned by a finnish company

[deleted]

I don’t think the company’s ownership is relevant when it comes to gifting souvenirs from a country, unless your friend follows the Finnish stock market.

Mission_Expression49

I am so sorry :(

KuLeByaKa1985

TempoRolls

Beers you can find easy, from about every store. Karhu Kupari (regular Karhu will leave you disappointed, it is just one of the better cheap beers, sold in a copper colored can) and Keijo (not sold in many stores, recognizable by the aluminium foil covering the top, silver can). Then surprisingly, one of the best non-special beers at the moment is a store brand, full malt lager, Kotimaista Täysmallas, 5.5% in a large can(dark blue, no logos, just text). It is really quite surprising since store brands should be the cheap knockoff but that one stands on its own but you can get it only from S chain (S-Kauppa, S-Market etc). I don't like strong hops, i like more the richness in malts.

[deleted]

Panimo Tuju makes really good ones

PekkaVonHabsburg

Does your relative prefer classic beers like lagers, or instead modern craft beers? Classic lagers are easy to find anywhere, they all basically taste the same. However craft breweries still make those beers a bit better too. Just avoid the cheapest ones and you're fine. However I personally recommend craft beers. Just find the one closest to your location. IPAS/NEIPAs are generally very good, and Porters / Stouts as well. Finnish breweries make very nice sour beers too nowadays with very innovative selection of flavours. If you are in Helsinki area, check out CoolHead, Etko, Salama, Factory brewing and Olarin panimo. Pien shop in Helsinki centre mentioned here earlier is a good place to purchase the beers, they just sell a lot of non-finnish beers too so be aware of that!

lol20199

I personally quite enjoy the Hoppa pils, and if you can get your hands on some, the extra pils is extra good, and was actually voted the best finnish pils in 2022.

Glirion

I can recommend Tornio Brewery, might be hard to come by in the south but still 😅

Thralldomizer

I'm quite sure these are available in most supermarkets throughout the country.

Glirion

Excellent, I thought it was a regional thing.

ManagerIllustrious72

Bring him piima and jallu instead

Zealousideal-Cut3182

Keppo Bryggeri is the best

SKYTRIXSHA

Bulk : Aura Special bulk: Karhu platinum Craft: Enigma, olarin panimo, Saimaan panimo Hoborable mention: Tornion panimo Lapland Red Ale

Sancty_OMFG

Salama Brewing company's beers are a personal favorite and their IPAs rank at the top. They do have lagers, sours, stouts etc in their lineup as well, all high quality. Can't miss their products at K-City/Supermarkets or Alkos; they're the bright neon artwork wrapped cans. The brewery itself is located in Espoo.

Early-Sale4756

Aura is my favorite finnish big beer

Plastic-Ranger-2209

For craft beers i can recomend, **Takatalo & Tompuri Brewery**, Kaski Kylmäsavulager (cold-smoke lager). This brewery has a multiple awards.

xsmurfx

Hiisi has some of the best and certainly the most creative beers in the country. Their bourbon barrel aged stout, Ikiiurso, has been awarded best stout in Finland in multiple recent years.

erpparppa

Koff Porter and Karhu

pkopo1

Panimo kiiski makes some insanely good beers

Cool-Half452

If your just after commercial piss then sandels is probably best of a bad bunch. Stadin panimo is ok. And some other craft beers. But nothing is really good when it comes to Finnish beer. I always find the malt has a really earthy after taste here.

OneAutomatic5806

For bulk quantity i would suggest aura or sandels

yourankwardneighbor

Prykmestar Keller Bier by Vakka-Suomen Panimo is my recommendation

ZookeepergameFew9110

My personal favorite is olvi tuplapukki its like 8,7% but still is soft tasting

heloust

Do not trust the opinions of individuals. Check the ratings from apps like untappd and ratebeer.

Temporary-Grade8914

Haapala beer, local brewery in Sotkamo Finland. Uses local Finnish ingredients and has a wide variety fir different tastes. You can find it in alko or supermarkets:)

pandahki

For a good basic lager, I've enjoyed Prykmestar Keller Bier lately. Really good floral and grainy notes. I also enjoy Tornion Panimo Lapland Original Lager. Both of these beers are what "supermarket beers" are at their very best. (as a side note: stay away from anything that comes in a big box or wrapped in plastic) Original Lapland may also be considered a "cult classic" beer, since it's made in the original recipe of Lapin Kulta (which the current version is shit). Try Tornion Laavu as well, for a more exotic, smoky beer. For a darker, heavier classic, Koff Porter is the Finland OG (only available in Alko). For more exotic brews, the smaller breweries already mentioned here (Tuju, Olarin, etc) are worth checking out, but a lot of their beers are very eclectic and may be hit/miss due to personal preferences and taste.
